Argentina defeat France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Belgium awful start.

Missed penalty for Canada.

Canada by far the best team so far.

Belgium is favorites, but people shouldn't underestimate Canadas team, they got some talent and play fast paced game, that being said Belgium are clear favorites but like you said we never know :D :)

Canada is on fire at the moment. They may regret missing the penalty. It was a poor penalty.

What’s going on with Belgium so far!

They look terrible!

It was a really poor penalty, I explained Canada plays a fast pace game and we are seeing it. Davies had a chance to create history :( not meant to be as of yet.

That first half was all Canada, but that is what seperates the big teams have the rest, Belgium had one chance and they made it count, Canada had 4-5 really good chances and could not make it count, regardless a really good game we have so far.

Really enjoyed that half, Canada punished for squandering their opportunities and a great clinical finish from Belgium with their one chance! Lots more to come in the second 45 I’m sure.

World Cup 2022: Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu hails 'historic victory' over Germany

It just had to be them, didn't it?

Football has a funny way of bringing up narratives, and two Japan players - who play their club football in Germany - conspired to score the goals that defeated the Europeans 2-1 at the World Cup.

After Saudi Arabia's seismic victory over Argentina on Tuesday, this was another huge shock in Qatar.

It left Germany's players silently slipping away from Khalifa International Stadium at full-time, and the Japan squad celebrating in front of their ecstatic following.

"It is a dream come true," winning goalscorer Takuma Asano told BBC Radio 5 Live. "We knew we could do it, we had a dream like this.

"We watched the Saudi game and thought we can do it - then we just did it today."

Skipper and former Southampton defender Maya Yoshida said: "Big win, massive win. But it is still tough to go through. It is absolutely amazing though, we have to be humble and very careful.

"We present Asia and many supporters from Asia supporting us today. This is the beauty of football."

Japan fans were in fine voice before, during and after the game.

On the metro to the stadium, Japan supporter Take told BBC Sport that his side would win 2-1. There wasn't any real conviction in his statement, but how right he was.

Samurai Blue supporters were bouncing at the Sport City stop outside the ground, and it continued inside with the pocket of fans near an 'Ultra Nippon' flag chanting, singing and banging their drum throughout the game.

Germany fans were vastly outnumbered and deafeningly outsung, their only real cheer coming when Ilkay Gundogan scored from the penalty spot for a 1-0 half-time lead.

Japan failed to have a shot on target in the opening period, but scored with two of their three efforts in the second period to complete a superb turnaround.

Japan failed to have a shot on target in the opening period, but scored with two of their three efforts in the second period to complete a superb turnaround.

"It felt like a home game," one supporter from near Nagoya told BBC Sport afterwards. "We showed our true fighting spirit."

Japan boss Hajime Moriyasu, who gave an animated post-match team talk with his players in a huddle on the pitch, also hailed the battling abilities of his players.

"We are reaching the global standard," he said. "We are showing our capability from Asian football. They have a wonderful goalkeeper however, our players were very intelligent.

"When we conceded a goal, we continued. You have to be persistent, then you can go. Our team fought really hard. We need to be tough until the very last minute and then we can grab this moment.

"Maybe we could show that Japanese players have been building up to their true abilities."

Former England striker Chris Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live: "What a strange World Cup. What a strange game.

"Japan weren't in it in the first half - Germany were controlling it. Then all of a sudden Japan show they can play. Then Asano with a brilliant finish, he lifts the ball into the roof of the net past Manuel Neuer.

"Japan held out and this group is really interesting. Japan have made their mark now and the Germans have work to do. This group now is wide open."

Former Germany manager and striker Jurgen Klinsmann told BBC Sport: "For Germany, this is very, very upsetting. And obviously, you are in a group with Spain, which makes it even trickier. So there is a risk not to get out of the group. And I just think it wasn't necessary to get to that point.

"They were basically cruising but Germany were never capable of getting into a higher gear, from a tempo point of view, a passing point of view, it was too slow, it was too lethargic and it caught them in the second half and Japan moved their level of aggression and bite and feistiness, they found a way back into the game and deserved the win. "

Five of Japan's starting XI play in Germany, as well as Ritsu Doan of Freiburg and Bochum's Asano, who both came off the bench to score their goals.

There may be an awkward exchange if their country progress to the last 16 and send the four-time champions home at the first hurdle for the second consecutive World Cup.

It was supposed to be different for Germany this time.

Dumped out of the group stage at the World Cup in 2018, stunned by another Asian opposition in South Korea on that occasion, this was a shot at redemption for Hansi Flick and his men.

But Japan soaked up the pressure and had just 26% of possession, to hand Germany their first defeat in 26 games after scoring the opening goal in World Cup matches, stretching back to 1994.

Moriyasu added: "I believe it is a historic moment and a victory to say the least. If I'm thinking about the development of Japanese football, we are building up and players are going abroad.

"We believe those leagues have contributed to the ability of our Japanese players, so we are very grateful and respectful to that. But no matter the opponent, we go for the win.

"Many German people and so many brilliant players and trainers have contributed and helped us in Japanese football. Today Japan won. However, Japan wants to continue learning from Germany and the world to play. That's our future idea."

With a heavyweight clash up next against Spain and rounding off against Costa Rica, Germany have just a 37% chance of reaching the next round, according to statisticians Opta.

The result also meant Germany lost a game after leading at half-time in the World Cup for the first time since June 1978.

A downbeat Flick said: "Of course know with this defeat and zero points we are under pressure. There is no question about that.

"We can only blame ourselves. We have to make sure we can come out of this and be courageous and decisive."

That was an awful performance from Belgium.

So lucky to win that match.

Canada were by far the better team.

sweep_shot is Mexico still a league above Canada?

Canada is having a purple patch. That's all.

Mexico rarely miss any World Cup. This is Canada's first World Cup in over 30 years.

Mexico have a far more stable system and more talent than Canada. They are simply better.

Amazing game by Canada. Yes, they missed some golden chances, but they put up a great fight. Belgium did not play great, but I admired, the fact they still looked calm and composed and Courtois made some big saves as well.

Belgium will look better for their next match, as for Canada, they will have to find a way to convert their chances, we still await Canada first ever goal at a Fifa world cup.

I wont bring in Uruguay 1950 to comparison for today.

As a matter of fact, Mexico has never been eliminated from group stage since 1994 World Cup. They made it past group stage every single time since 1994. Even Argentina were eliminated in group stage once.

I meant past round of 16*, relax with the insults already

What exactly did Canada achieve? You are saying Canada is at same level as Mexico.

This is Canada's second World Cup in history and first since 1986. Mexico come to World Cup every time (they missed very few in their history).

My post was about the bottom-tiered teams in this World Cup. Mexico is definitely not bottom-tired. They are mid-tiered.

Canada is a bottom-tiered team regardless of how they did in qualification. Only a complete noob would say they are at same level as Mexico.

Namibia beat Sri Lanka in cricket qualifer. Does that mean they are better than Sri Lanka? No! You can't judge a team based on one qualifier. Look at performances of a few years at least.

This is amazing from Japanese fans.

Always loved Japanese work ethics.

European teams should learn from Japan. This is how you behave in a foreign country.

Well played but scoreboard says they scored no goal. It is the result that counts.

Canada should at least draw one game but wouldn't be surprising if they lose all.

Such a fun tournament to watch so far. Shocks from Saudi and Japan, surprisingly good performances from USA and Canada, and utter entertaining dominance from England, France and Spain.

Loving it.

Not particularly looking forward to today's game though Brazil and Portugal should be interesting and Uruguay -South Korea could be a classic

2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar: Matchday & Tournament Thread

Canada were so good and so, so, impressive but yet ended up on the losing side! Still, though, they would´ve secured a draw if they hadn´t wasted that penalty. Sports is all about taking your chances, of course. They showed a stat on the screen during the match that Canada had made a record of creating the most chances in a match in the ongoing tournament, however, they were just not good enough to provide that finishing touch to all the chances that they created. What a pity!

The German commentator was saying again and again that Belgium didn´t deserve the win - it´s very rare for a commentator to be saying this, mind you - and I think that he has my agreement.

Well played, Canada!

Stat attack: Switzerland v Cameroon

Switzerland v Cameroon (10:00 GMT)

This is the first international fixture between Switzerland and Cameroon.

Cameroon have qualified for their eighth World Cup, the most by an African team. They have also played more matches at the World Cup than any other African nation (23), while only Nigeria (23) have scored more goals at the tournament among African sides than Cameroon (18).

Switzerland have qualified for their 12th World Cup, finishing top of their group ahead of Euro 2020 winners Italy. It's their fifth in a row, setting their longest run of consecutive appearances in the tournament.

Cameroon have lost each of their past seven games at the World Cup. Only Mexico have ever lost more games in a row in the competition's history (9 between 1930 & 1958).

Switzerland are unbeaten in their opening game in each of their five appearances at the World Cup (W2 D3), since losing 5-0 against Germany in 1966.

HALF-TIME

Switzerland 0-0 Cameroon

A goalless but entertaining half draws to an end. Still can't believe we haven't seen at least one goal. There've been enough good chances to provide one.

HALF-TIME

Switzerland 0-0 Cameroon

There have been quite a few goalless games this World Cup. Surprising.

Don't think I have seen so many goalless games in a World Cup event before. Last World Cup only had one I think.

GOAL - Switzerland 1-0 Cameroon

Breel Embolo

The player born in Cameroon scores for Switzerland.

One of the easiest goals that the Monaco forward will ever score as well. Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler work some space in midfield to find Xherdan Shaqiri out on the right.

The former Liverpool winger lifts his head and cuts the ball back to Embolo, who is ready and waiting to sweep the ball in from six yards out.

FULL-TIME
Switzerland 1-0 Cameroon

==

Switzerland's Breel Embolo scored the only goal against Cameroon - the country of his birth - in a hard-fought World Cup Group G opener.

Embolo refused to celebrate when he finished off a slick Swiss attack shortly after half-time.

The Indomitable Lions were unfortunate to lose after an enterprising display at the Al Janoub Stadium in Qatar.

Victory was vital for Switzerland, as both sides still have to face Brazil in the group.

Embolo moved to Switzerland from Cameroon with his family as a six-year-old and pledged his allegiance to the European nation after being granted citizenship in 2014.

At the age of just 18, he set up the Embolo Foundation to support refugee children in Switzerland and disadvantaged children in the country of his birth.

He said before the game it would be "a very special" occasion to play against Cameroon and when he scored, he respectfully raised his arms and closed his eyes.

His strike ensured victory for a side with high expectations - boss Murat Yakin has declared his squad "the best Switzerland side ever" and said he expects them to achieve their best return at a World Cup.

Yet they struggled in the first half in the face of a vibrant Cameroon start and ought to have gone behind, with Eric Choupo-Moting, Bryan Mbeumo and Martin Hongla all missing presentable opportunities.

The goal rocked Cameroon and the Swiss had chances to extend their lead, only for Andre Onana to save superbly from Ruben Vargas, while Embolo and substitute Haris Seferovic were denied by last-ditch defending.

The Indomitable Lions have now lost eight successive games at the World Cup finals but Rigobert Song's side impressed at times here.

Their next game against Serbia will be pivotal if they are to stand any chance of becoming the first Cameroon team to progress beyond the group stage since 1990.

For Switzerland, the win gives them breathing space before their match against group favourites Brazil on Monday.

HALF-TIME
HT: Uruguay 0-0 South Korea

And that's the whistle.

South Korea missed a glorious chance through Hwang Ui-jo before Uruguay hit the post late on in the first half. Goalless at the interval.

FULL-TIME
Uruguay 0-0 South Korea

Uruguay twice hit the woodwork - with a Diego Godin header at the end of the first half and through Federcio Valverde's 25-yard piledriver at the end of the second.

South Korea don't have a shot on target and escape with a point.

That's four out of 14 games in this World Cup that have been goalless so far.

Nothing could separate Uruguay and South Korea in their World Cup opener in Group H despite plenty of attacking quality on show in Qatar.

In front of a vibrant crowd at the Education City Stadium, the South Koreans frustrated Uruguay but did not create many clear-cut opportunities.

Their best fell to Hwang Ui-jo, who fired over the bar in the first half, before Uruguay captain Diego Godin headed a corner against the post.

Hwang stood with his head in hands afterwards, while team-mates fell to their knees in disbelief, all in front of a group of South Korean fans behind the goal, who were in fine voice throughout.

South Korea had controlled most of the first half but Uruguay began to dominate as the game wore on and they almost won it in the final minute of normal time when Federico Valverde's long-range effort crashed off the post.

There was one last chance for Tottenham striker Son Heung-min - South Korea's star man - but he dragged his shot wide, much to the relief of the Uruguayan supporters.

The draw leaves Group H wide open, with many seeing it as a three-way battle for qualification to the knockout stages between Uruguay, South Korea and Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal.

Uruguay were a little unlucky today perhaps. Hit the pole twice, and that doesn't happen every day. South Korea too missed one golden opportunity in the second half.

Cristiano Ronaldo has now scored in FIVE World Cups.

Great match, Portugal wins 3-2.

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score at five Fifa World Cups as Portugal began their campaign with a thrilling victory over Ghana.

Ronaldo was playing for the first time since his controversial television interview last week and his subsequent release by Manchester United following the comments.

And the 37-year-old scored the opening goal from the penalty spot, hammering in after being tripped in the box by Ghana's Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu.

Captain Ronaldo had a couple of chances early on but a low shot was smothered by Lawrence Ati-Zigi and he also headed wide at the far post.

The forward had a goal disallowed for a push on Alexander Djiku while at the other end, Ghana did not have a single shot in the opening period.

The Africans improved in the second period as Mohammed Kudus drilled narrowly wide of the far post and got their reward when Andre Ayew equalised from close range.

But Portugal responded with two goals in two minutes to seal the points - Joao Felix converting a delightfully clipped finish and substitute Rafael Leao coolly stroking in just seconds after coming on.

Osman Bukhari headed in a late consolation for Ghana, but victory means Portugal top Group H after Uruguay and South Korea played out a goalless draw earlier on Thursday.

HALF-TIME
Brazil 0-0 Serbia

Disappointing so far.

There has been moments of promise, that this might kick into life. But too often it has fizzled to nothing.

Serbia making life very difficult for Brazil.

Half time.

Brazil and Serbia: 0-0.

Serbia has done well. A draw would be a great result for them.

Serbia looking solid and well organised so far.

Brazil need more from Neymar who has been poor.

Amazing from Richarlison.

What a goal that second one was.

Absolutely brilliant.

Superb second half from Brazil.

When at their best no team can stop them at this World Cup.

Mental strength is the question 2014 scars run deep.

I still say Spain and France are strong favourites.

Its a shame to see Mohammed Salah not playing this world cup, Unfortunate that Senegal and Egypt were drawn together, There would've been a great Egyptian fanbase if Egypt was there instead of Cameroon.

But anyways, Best to move on, because at the same time Italy and Colombia didn't qualify too...

After each team has played their first match:

Three Best Teams in no particular order (and only taking into account the single match they played, nothing else):

- France - They look proper deadly on the attack, even with a 36 year old Giroud. You need at least 2 - 3 players to defend against Mbappe.

- Spain - Didn't watch their match, but their young players are insanely talented and skilled, its ridiculous.

- Saudi Arabia - A lifetime result, brilliant performance, their defense and their spider man goalkeeper is brilliant also. They are not done yet. And if they finish first, while France finishes first, they can definitely make an dark horse run to the quarter finals, maybe even semi finals!

As an Argentina fan, I still do believe Argentina is going to win this world cup... But at the very same time, Im very worried as they are possibly on the verge on catastrophe, on Messi's last ever world cup!

Neymar appeared to be in tears on the bench at the end of Brazil's opening World Cup win over Serbia after being substituted with a sprained ankle.

Brazil's team doctor confirmed the forward suffered the injury and that it will be reassessed on Friday.

"We are confident Neymar will continue playing in the World Cup," Brazil head coach Tite insisted.

The 30-year-old was replaced in the 80th minute of Thursday's 2-0 win after a heavy tackle from Nikola Milenkovic.

The Football Association has submitted a report to Fifa seeking clarity over perceived penalty inconsistencies at the World Cup.

After beating Iran 6-2, manager Gareth Southgate said he was "worried" about the impact of England appearing in a pre-tournament referee briefing.

Harry Maguire was denied an early penalty on Monday but Iran were awarded one from a similar incident.

"We put a report in. We haven't heard anything back as yet," said Southgate.

Fifa referees' committee chairman Pierluigi Collina spoke during the briefing, which was also open to the media.

The Italian used a clip of midfielder Kalvin Phillips blocking to create space for Maguire to score from a corner and said such a goal would be disallowed at the World Cup.

Maguire appeared to be pulled back from a corner against Iran, who were later given a spot-kick themselves following a shirt-pull by England defender John Stones. Argentina were also awarded a similar penalty against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

"There was obviously a penalty given the next afternoon, so whether that was a consequence of our game being reviewed by the referees or not, it's hard to say," Southgate added.

Apparently Asian qualifying is so poor hence South Korea always qualify and Australia always rob an Arab side but African qualifying is so tough. They need to start playing inter-continental playoffs to make it fairer.

Even Nigeria came up against Ghana
