Well done Argentina, think they probably deserved it in the end.

Benzena kante griezmann missed in shootouts the experience poor Lloris also exposed

I am not even Argentine, but I was no nervous watching the penalty shootout.

I have been a Messi fan since 2005 and this is the greatest moment for me as his fan. He has nothing left to prove anymore. If he is to retire now, his career will be complete.

Greizmann and Giroud should have been therre to take the penalties, but I guess it is what it is.

man the argentina keeper, that 119 minute stop he made, that was just awesome. He put a bloackade on france.

All the penalties and kicks taken on him today, he dived at the right direction. Missed only one which was in the final penaltiess...

Always wanted Argentina to win it but lost my love for them.

Delighted for them. I feel sorry for the cows

All the boomers were waiting for Messi to fail, but he turned up in the final just like he has turned up during the entirety of the world cup.

You have people who stan Salah taking shots at Messi lol.

and to think messi retired......

Greatest world cup final!

A team that lost to saudi Arabia. A team that lost the lead twice, a team that got a hattrick hit on them...

They came out as the winnenress

Indeed.

They are the #1 team in the world now. They have won COPA, Finalissima, and now World Cup.

Watching Argentina during this tournament, it felt as if they had God on their side.

That’s right, at times the team came under pressure so had to ride out some difficult moments, but they showed incredible resilience and spirit as well as great quality to get over the line in the end.

2 brilliant teams who played out a fantastic match.

What a final.

One of the greatest games of football I have ever seen.

Messi was under immense pressure coming into the tournament. He knew that it was his last chance to win the world cup, but he stepped up in every game and played a captain's tournament. Honestly, if he is to announce his retirement from football altogether, it would be a perfect ending. Of course, I am hoping that he still plays for a few more years.

Commiserations to Kylian Mbappe, you played your part in making this the best final of alltime.

I think this is the best football game I have ever seen considering the context.

Nice to see Islamophobe Macron taste defeat. It would have killed me to see him happy, had France won.

Congratulations to Messi and Argentina and commiserations to Mbappe and France.

What a final, surely the greatest of all time.

Argentina Just like Spain (2010), they lost their 1st Match of the world cup and still went onto win it.

Yeah but honestly the French team is wayy more diverse than many other European ones.

If it wasn’t for Messi i would had defn supported them as well.

Yeah, France are a very likeable team, but just a shame about their leader.

Very graceful from argentina team as they stood in a row for france

Best football game I have seen. Nail biter till the end

The perfect World Cup final tbh

Couldn’t have asked for a better match. Mbappe was immense

France team have a lot of Muslims, so Macron will probably be holding them responsible for the defeat.

Only Dembele I believe was the only Muslim in the XI today but he did screw up big time. He was awful and comfortably worst player on the pitch.

It was literally Mbappe v Argentina today. His team, finishers let him down in normal play and penelties too.

The chance in the last minute of ET2 should have been finished

Best football match I've personally ever witnessed.

When Mbappe levelled it for France in the 81st minute, I thought Argentina had bottled it up.

At penalties, you had to fancy Messi's side. Martinez is perhaps the greatest penalty shot stopper ever.

I'm so happy for Messi. He deserved it for the way he played throughout the tournament.

He's the only play in history to achieve 2 x Golden Balls. There's only GOAT because he's in a league of his own.

France have underachieved for a team of their caliber. Yes they won 2018 WC but they need to win another major tournament, perhaps Euro 2024 to establish themselves as one of the GOAT teams.

Mbappe was a one man army today, his teammates let him down.

They need to bring in Zidane. I think Deschamps' brand of football isn't the greatest.

... We had nail-biting Quarter-Finals, but the Semi-Finals, on the other hand, weren´t that tense. Here´s hoping for a cracker of a Final, and may the best team win. I´m undecided on whom to support, therefore I´m simply going to really hope for a Final for ages to remember.....

When I wrote that "I'm simply going to hope for a Final for ages to remember", I did NOT mean THAT! No way! That was a serious over-reaction to what I had wished for. I apologise to all the heart patients out there. I didn't mean that! :D :))

From being the most dull Final that I was ever witnessing, until the 80th minute or so, to being the GREATEST football inal that I've ever watched, it was a surreal turn. Unbelievable, out of this world, out of this planet, out of this universe! Simply not possible! One of the best things that the human mind has come up with is this game called football, also known as soccer in some countries.

A loss to Saudi Arabia, two wins in knock-out matches in Penalty Shoot-outs after conceding a 2-0 lead, not even a film writer could've written a better script than this for Messi`s last World Cup. This is just another example of the fact that dreams come true, it´s just about not giving up on them regardless of how many setbacks that you face - and Messi did have two huge setbacks in 2014 and 2018 respectively, but the dream, ultimately, has come true. Congratulations to him, his team, his country Argentina, and the millions of fans that he has around the world, not to mention his local fans in Qatar who made every match of his a home game.

But, but, but, spare a thought for Mbappe! Not even films have a greater example than this of a one-man battle, not even books would have a bigger example than this of one man going down fighting. I wonder and ask myself whether we´ll ever have a bigger instance than this of such a tense, nerve-wrecking, and spectacular face-off between two great players. I used to rate Zidane´s performance against Brazil in 2006 as the best that I had ever seen by a player in a football match, well, Mbappe has gone past that by miles. The best performance by a football player in a match that I´ve ever seen, given the match situation, given the occasion, given how down and out, dead and buried, his team was, prior to him waking up from a slumber.

Mbappe is my father´s favourite player right now, and the honour is truly richly deserved by him. We all salute him, an absolute unstoppable force in football! What a player, what a talent! He gives the ball a serious thump that it almost makes the sound of a gunshot! Looking forward now, more eagerly, to seeing him in the next Euro in 2024 and other tournaments in the future.

Belated Congratulations to my all time favourites Argentina. Finally my wait since 86' is over. Fully deserved it and completely dominated France until they got a lucky break with penalties. Messi is the undisputed GOAT now. Vamos Los Albicelestes ❤🇦🇷

Didier Deschamps has extended his contract as France head coach until June 2026 and is expected to remain in charge for a fourth World Cup.

He led France to World Cup victory in 2018 and to the 2022 final in Qatar, which they lost to Argentina.

Since the 54-year-old former Chelsea midfielder took charge in 2012, France have also reached the 2014 World Cup quarter-finals and 2016 Euros final.

Deschamps has won 89, drawn 28 and lost 22 of his 139 matches in charge.

The France Football Federation said assistant coach Guy Stephan, goalkeeping coach Franck Raviot and physical trainer Cyril Moine will also remain with the national team.

Deschamps, who also won the World Cup as a player in 1998, helped France win the Nations League in 2021.

His most recent contract - signed in December 2019 - took him up to the end of the 2022 World Cup.

He will now oversee France's qualification campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany before focus turns to qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 2026.
