What's new

Arsenal FC | 2019/20 season

Wenger left a year or two late, we should have taken our chance with Pep and Klopp then. Even now availability of head coaches that meet the philosophy of Arsenal are unavailable.

I don’t want Mourinho anywhere near Arsenal. He is a proven manager but in the past 2-3 years whilst managing Chelsea and MUFC; he’s looked out of ideas and has looked very one dimensional. Arsenal have a good bunch of youngsters coming through Willock, Saliba, Jules, Balagoun, Nketiah, Saka, Nelson and Martinelli. Mourinho has no good history in managing and developing youngsters. Only youngster I see benefiting in Saliba under Mourinho.

Realistically, Arsenal will keep Emery a game or two; if Arsenal lose badly again... Especially v Leicester; we’ll probably see Ljunberg managing the side till the end of the season.

But let’s get one thing real; Arsenal have lost their DNA, they have declined as a footballing team, bad crop of senior players at Arsenal and Emirates Stadium is a theatre, not a football stadium. I back Xhaka fully what he did.

Short term solutions: Ljunberg, Arteta, Guus Hiddink or Benitez.
Long term: Nagelsmann or Rodgers.

Completely agree I mentioned it some days back to Wenger should left some years back and Guardiola or Klopp were the ideal managers to get Arsenal back to the top.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery admits he "does not know" if former captain Granit Xhaka will play for the club again.

Xhaka, 27, was stripped of the club captaincy earlier this week after being involved in an angry confrontation with home fans during the Gunners' 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on 27 October.

The Swiss midfielder has not played since and will not play in Saturday's Premier League game at Leicester City.

"He said to me that he's not feeling good enough to play," said Emery.

"I spoke with him on Tuesday about how he's feeling and how he is in his mind. He's working well, he's training well.

"I need to be focused with the players we have, and then after the international break I am going to speak again with him."

The Switzerland captain was booed as he walked off the pitch after being substituted against Palace, prompting him to cup his ear, take his shirt off and head straight down the tunnel to the dressing room.

Emery later said Xhaka should apologise to the club's supporters, saying the midfielder "knows he was wrong".

However, Xhaka did not go that far, although he did say he got "carried away" and reacted "disrespectfully" to fans following repeated threats to his wife and daughter.

Pushed on whether Xhaka may never play for Arsenal again, Emery added: "As a coach I have a responsibility for the team. We need a player like Granit Xhaka.

"But also, I don't know if he's going to play again. I don't know if he is available in his mind to continue helping us and continuing defending the Arsenal shirt.

"Then, if I decide he is in the group with us, if he is ready and 100% in his mind with the decision to help us and to play with his quality helping us. We need that quality and that player.

"We're now a little weaker without him in that position because we have one less player."

Asked if a move for Xhaka in January had been mentioned, Emery said he had "asked that question" but also added: "I'm not thinking about that because we're in November and we're going to play a lot of matches in November and December.

"We cannot change him in that two months. The club is speaking with him and we're going to decide how he is and how I'm thinking we use him."

Granit Xhaka admits it was ‘painful’ to be booed off by Arsenal fans and has criticised supporters for their ‘incomprehensible’ reaction towards him.

The Switzerland international was stripped off the Arsenal captaincy earlier this week after he reacted angrily to fans who booed him off as he was substituted during the second half of the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace last month. Xhaka has not played for Arsenal since that game, while he is now being linked with a move away from the club in the January transfer window.

‘When my shirt number lit up on the board of the fourth official and then broke jealous jubilation of their own fans, that hit me very much and stirred up,’ Xhaka told Swiss newspaper Blick.

‘It was very painful and frustrating. Xhaka gestured to Arsenal fans after getting booed off against Crystal Palace (NBC) ‘For me, this reaction is still incomprehensible, especially in this vehemence and how extremely hostile I was here.

‘Since I can remember, the fans are an integral part of my sport. ‘And I have a lot of respect from the beginning for the commitment and hardships fans take to help us players.

‘Justifiable criticism of them makes you grow as an athlete. ‘And the power and energy that they put into the game makes every athlete love football even more. I feel like part of a big football family. ‘But when you get scolded by this very footballing family in times when you are already being attacked massively, it hurts a lot.

‘By that I do not mean that I can not stand criticism. If I and the team do not play well, we have to listen to it and work on it. ‘But if you offend and insult your own captain, bring restlessness and bad mood into the team you actually support. ‘That makes no sense to me and weakens the cohesion.’

Alexandre Lacazette has called for Arsenal to stop slacking after they fell eight points behind the Premier League top four amid poor form.

The Gunners were beaten 2-0 by top-four rivals Leicester on Saturday following back-to-back home draws to Wolves and Crystal Palace, and before they lost 1-0 to promoted side Sheffield United, falling to sixth.

It has not been much better for Arsenal in other competitions too, crashing out of the Carabao Cup with defeat to Liverpool and being held by Vitoria in the Europa League last week, although they are still top of Group F.

"Obviously we're not at the top of our game at the moment," Lacazette, who has scored twice across nine appearances this term, told the club's website.

"But we remain leaders in the Europa League, we're still in the running in the championship. I think now we just need to work on keeping things calm and moving forward with that.

"We're working together every day on a constant basis to pick up the slack."

Arsenal's poor record has put pressure on head coach Uani Emery, who received the public backing of the Arsenal hierarchy earlier this week, but was warned that results must improve.

Lacazette insists that the Spaniard still has the full support of the squad.

"The group definitely supports the coach and I'm sure the club does as well," he added.

"We're a very tight group and we're doing everything we can to improve."

The defending is one thing that has certainly got worse and the money they spent in the summer has not improved them at all. Nicolas Pepe is struggling to get in a team which paid £72m - a club record - to sign him.

Dani Ceballos started the season well. He is a talented player, but does his talent fits into this system?

The guys in front are expected to be better but the attacking side of things has lost its way. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette don't know what they are trying to do or what the style is.

They want to get on the ball and make things happen, but they do not have any runners since Aaron Ramsey left the club to join Juventus.

Arsenal have lost their identity and the finger can be pointed at Emery for that.

What is Arsenal's style? It's a complete disaster of a style and formation. He does not know his best starting line-up or his best formation. This is why he's under the pressure he is under, but I don't think he will get sacked.

He is asking for time, but will he get the 18 months that takes him to the end of next season? There are plenty of Arsenal fans wanting Emery to go now, but reports suggest the club's hierarchy are going to stick with the Spaniard for the time being.

However, if things don't turn around quickly, it may go down the line of Emery losing his job.

I was actually very happy because every defeat means the greasy-haired clown is one step closer to the exit door, but alas, the Emirates Stadium bully had to step up to offer him a lifeline.

21 shots on goal by a team that is (was) 19th in the table.

🤡🤡🤡

Southampton bottled it. They missed 3 sitters in the last 10 mins or so.

Lucky point for Arsenal, that might keep Emery for another game. Like Mamoon, I was hoping we'd lose today.

Still want Emery to Stay yeah?

Seems like Levy knows Emery might be out any time and sacked Poch while recruiting Mou diligently.

He cannot organize a defense, he cannot organize a midfield and his attack is completely disjointed. He doesn’t have the personality that can motivate the players who seem fed up of him as well.

However, the board thinks things will get better and he must be given time. Give him more time and things will only get worse. He is bloody clueless.

It's very sad. I was eagerly awaiting for us to rope in Mourinho.

I have now switched my attention to Gerrard. I think he'll be a good replacement.

Since Arsene’s time, gunners had been my 2nd team; but they are really stressing that now. I do believe Arsenal has the weakest defence in EPL & the Coach has no clue. Have to say Kroenke has too much patience.

It’s time the players took some responsibility too. When Laca scored the equaliser, he looked disappointed.

I want Arteta or Rodgers in the summer. Allegri doesn’t interest me and I don’t see why Gerrard would sabotage his chance of replacing Klopp one day.

It would be a perfect stop-gap for Gerrard. Klopp isn't going to stay on at Liverpool, once his contracts ends in 2022.

Enough is enough now. Arsenal are playing home games against low tier sides as if they are the away team 5-6 years ago.

As **** as we are
Its Arsenal one of the biggest club in the world. Will never be a stop gate to manage another PL club

Arsenal is not a stop-gap. A top manager would back himself to turn things around for Arsenal and make them title contenders in 3-4 seasons. If Gerrard comes and does that, it would make it very complicated for him to eventually replace Klopp.

A stop-gap for him would be managing a club like West Ham, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace etc. The only way Gerrard agrees to manage Arsenal is if he believes that Klopp will stay for another 10 years and there is no point in waiting for that long, especially when there is no guarantee that Liverpool will approach him eventually.

I disagree because that's how low I think of Arsenal. We are not a big club anymore, when you consider that we have been playing Europa team for 3-4 seasons in a row and I feel the damage has already been done to turn it around this season.

You have to understand in the current era of football, long serving managers like SAF and Wenger are a thing of the past. I doubt Klopp will renew his contract, which I believe will expire in 2022.

So therefore it's a great opportunity for Gerrard to showcase his qualities as a manager until he lands what I imagine is his dream managerial role at Liverpool.

Arsenal is still a big club but a big club in shambles. The history of the club, the immense worldwide support, the heritage, the stadium, the great players have that donned the shirt etc., none of that can be whitewashed after 12 years of mediocrity.

The right manager won’t need more than 2-3 years to put the team on the right track. Things change quickly in football.

As far long-serving managers are concerned, you won’t see managers spend 20+ years at a club, but there is no reason why everyone will move on after 4-5 years.

Klopp has a special bond with Liverpool, and he doesn’t seem like the type of person (for example Pep and Mourinho) who is obsessed with winning in multiple countries. I would be quite surprised if he doesn’t extend his contract.

Another potentially long-serving manager in Lampard. He will definitely be at Chelsea for at least a decade.

Gerrard is a very, very long shot. Same with Pochettino. Their association with Liverpool and Spurs means it would take some serious convincing on Arsenal’s part.

Arteta seems to be the best realistic option in my opinion. Unproven yes, but his appointment will generate a lot of excitement. He loves the club and he will be eager to prove himself especially with Pep not leaving City for another 2 years at least.

Moreover, City doesn’t seem to be the type of club that would stand in his way. They didn’t last year either before he got snubbed for the clown.

Ljungberg/Bould as interim with Arteta taking over in the summer is the way forward.

Rumours circulating that Nuno Santos who is the coach of Wolves is the favourite to take over. His agent has links to Raul Sanllehi.

Personally would find his appointment underwhelming due to his style of play.

But I will support whoever takes over.

At the same time I would not be shocked if it is a smokescreen for another manager.

Nuno is scheduled to have a press conference tommorow for Wolves Europa League game.

Nuno Santos.

See this is where Arsenal are failing, by failing to captivate the imagination of their fans/support. This is why nothing seems to progress because the fans are not inspired to feel positive, just creates a further negative tension. They need a big, big name manager who promises to bring in big name players.

Nuno would be a good choice for Arsenal. Wenger towards the end and Emery have bought some rubbish players. David Luiz in and Pepe who have both been below average is a failure for Emery. However I think another manager would have made better use of them, Emery seems clueless tactically, doesn't seem to have done his homework on the opposition and isn't a motivator or doesn't have enough to motivate his players.

Nuno has PL experience, good signings and has taken a Wolves team into Europe not long after being promoted. This is a great achievement and Nuno would make Arsenal much more competitive.

Im not sure why Eddie Howe doesn't get mentioned, a top class English manager who is tactically brilliant too.

Most Gooners want Allegri as their next manager should Emery be given his marching orders. According to most reports he has to win the next two matches to have any chance of keeping his job. Brendan Rodgers would be a great replacement if he was available. Don't see him leaving Leicester even for a much bigger club with his job no way near complete with the Foxes. Perhaps Arsenal can make a cheeky bid for Diego Simeone if they can afford him in an industry where money always talks. As a LFC nutter I wouldn't mind him being our next manager if and when Klopp calls it a day.

What Eddie Howe has done with Bournemouth is nothing short of remarkable. He has turned a league two side into a Premier League regular. I think before he became the manager they didn’t play in the top division for a single season. I personally wouldn’t mind to see Arsenal take a shot with him.

However, realistically speaking, he has to manage a bigger clubs than Bournemouth like Villa, Everton or Newcastle or take Bournemouth to Europe before clubs like Arsenal and Man United take note of him.

If Raul is interested in Nuno because he has links with Jorge Mendes, then what stopped him from approaching Mourinho with conviction who he was sitting at home and using his media boys to link him with Arsenal?

Nuno is a very good manager and certainly an improvement on Emery. However, for me he doesn’t have the profile and the personality of a manager that can turn you into Premier League winners and make you a force in the Champions League. I really don’t see him as someone who can take on the likes of Pep, Klopp and even Lampard even after several transfer windows.

It is also important to note that his Wolves success is centered around several Jorge Mendes’ signings who won’t help Arsenal close the gap with City and Liverpool.

I believe that Arsenal should either go with someone unproven and exciting like Arteta, or go all out of for a big name like Allegri who would attract the interest of some quality players and has the stature to enhance the profile of the club. Raul missed out on Mourinho and Allegri is the next best available alternative.

The “middle of the road” managers like Emery and Nuno won’t transform the club.

[MENTION=131701]Mamoon[/MENTION], I think Nuno links are a smokescreen. I don't see him leaving Wolves midway through the season and we would have to pay Wolves a lot of compensation as well. Also there is no reliable outlet reporting it for me.

I agree with your take on who our next manager should be. An elite manager or a potential great manager.

Nuno Espirito Santo is a potential replacement if Arsenal sack Unai Emery

Arsenal have identified Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo as a potential replacement for Unai Emery if the Gunners decide to sack the Spaniard.

Head coach Emery is under pressure after a winless run of six matches across all competitions.

Arsenal have only won four of 13 Premier League games this season.

BBC Sport understands that if Emery is sacked and Nuno is allowed to speak to Arsenal, then the Portuguese would be a strong contender to take over.

Emery says he is only focused on "today and tomorrow" as he prepares for his side's Europa League match at home to Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.

"My job is to prepare for the match, to show the best performance in front of our supporters," he said.

His side go into Thursday's game top of Group F, four points clear of both their German opponents and Standard Liege.

On Sunday, a number of Arsenal fan groups called for "urgent action" over the "state of things" at the club.

"My focus is only today and tomorrow, to do all the things that we have worked on here at the training ground," Emery added.

"We know our supporters were disappointed by the draw against Southampton, but we have the perfect chance to reconnect with our supporters.

"Our wish is that every supporter tomorrow helps the team, we need them."

Arsenal are also eight points adrift of the top four and 19 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Fergie left Aberdeen for Utd and Wenger did not win anything with Monaco before joining Arsenal. They were both up and coming managers with potential but no experience of the PL. Both were given time and ended up as ATG PL managers. Howe is a similar talent in management and wont need big money signings to make the team play good intelligent football.

Arsenal need a 3/4 year building plan having too many average players in the squad. So whoever is bought in will need time.

Too many rumors. I think the talks are ongoing but I do agree that it seems unlikely. He is a good manager and it will be strange if he leaves mid-season. He will get plenty of good offers from various clubs in the future. His Wolves stint has raised his profile.

The only link is that he is Jorge Mendes client. Doubt there is much to this.

The pressure on Arsenal manager Unai Emery intensified as Daichi Kamada's brilliant double earned Eintracht Frankfurt victory at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners boss came into this Europa League match having failed to lead his team to victory in their previous six outings, and this latest defeat means this is their longest winless run since February 1992.

At full-time the Spaniard appeared to make a gesture to the sparse home support as they jeered him, with some holding 'Emery Out' posters having watched their side surrender control against a team who were a clear second best in the first period.

However, Arsenal will seal qualification for the last 32 if they avoid a heavy defeat at Standard Liege in their final Group F game.

It looked like the Gunners had turned the corner after they dominated the opening period. Eintracht spent most of it trying to keep Arsenal's attack at bay until Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made the breakthrough with a strike just before half-time.

The Bundesliga side only managed one shot on goal in the first half, but were transformed after the break and equalised when Kamada curled in a fierce effort from the edge of the box.

The 23-year-old Japan international then put his side in front with another sweet strike from the edge of the area.

The contest also marked the return of Granit Xhaka to the Arsenal XI. The Swiss midfielder had missed the Gunners' past five matches after his infamous substitution in the 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace at the end of October, when he angrily gestured to supporters.

The 27-year-old appeared to pick up a knock to the knee in the first half but following treatment played the full 90 minutes.

The 48-year-old, given the task of moulding a new Arsenal after succeeding Arsene Wenger in 2018, is now odds-on with some bookmakers to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job.

The Europa League had offered some respite from the difficulties of the top flight - where his side have only won four of their 13 games and are eight points adrift of the top four - but the same problems reared their head on a forgettable night at Emirates Stadium.

With Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo identified as a potential replacement, how many more disappointments will Arsenal's hierarchy tolerate before they finally decide to twist?

It was all smiles on the home bench in the first half, and the only issue Emery had to contend with was being told he had to change his jacket because it clashed with Eintracht's colours.

Even the 31st-minute departure of the injured David Luiz, who was playing in midfield, did not upset the Gunners' rhythm as the attack of Aubameyang, Joe Willock, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka continually troubled the opposition backline.

Martinelli had a shot blocked and header cleared off the line while Aubameyang nodded wide before he swept home the Brazilian's low cross just before half-time.

It was the former Borussia Dortmund striker's 10th in 13 appearances against the Bundesliga club and his 31st goal in 44 home appearances for the Gunners.

However, it was a very different story for the home side in the second half.

Two substitutions by Eintracht coach Adi Hutter revitalised their attack, but his players were aided by some poor Arsenal defending.

The lively Kamada was allowed to advance towards the edge of the area by Sokratis before launching a brilliant strike past keeper Emiliano Martínez, and was then given even more space to line up his second, which found the same corner.

That was the 18th goal conceded by Arsenal in nine games.

The home attack, so potent in the first half, failed to find a response in the closing minutes as Eintracht defeated English opposition away from home for the first time since beating Burnley 2-1 in the Fairs Cup in April 1967.

Xhaka return overshadowed by defeat
Granit Xhaka
Granit Xhaka joined Arsenal from Basel in 2016
Perhaps Xhaka will have been relieved that the attention was shifted from him onto his manager.

He produced a competent display in front of his backline, although perhaps could have done more in helping defender Sokratis close down Kamada for his first goal.

The injury to his knee in the first half did not appear to have affected his overall performance and he even raised a cheer from the home support when he tricked his way past an Eintracht defender to set up Calum Chambers, who fired over the bar.

The only stain was the late yellow card he picked up for dissent when he threw down the ball in frustration thinking he won a tackle cleanly.

With the injury to Luiz it could be that Xhaka retains his place for next Sunday's trip to Norwich.

Eintracht end English jinx - stats
Arsenal have not won any of their past seven matches in all competitions (D5 L2) - they never went on as poor a run across 1,235 games under Wenger, last waiting this long for a win in February 1992 under George Graham (eight games).
Arsenal have led in five games during their current seven-match winless run, drawing four and losing one of those five games.
Arsenal were unbeaten in their previous 46 matches in all competitions when leading at half-time before tonight (W40 D6) since losing 2-1 at Watford in October 2017.
Saka has assisted five goals in his nine starts for Arsenal in all competitions, three of which have come against Eintracht.

Arsenal's winless run continued with Freddie Ljungberg's first Premier League game as boss ending in a draw against struggling Norwich.

The Gunners, with Ljungberg at the helm on an interim basis after Unai Emery was sacked on Friday, have not won for eight games.

The result leaves Arsenal eighth in the Premier League, seven points off a place in the top four, while Norwich remain 19th, three points from safety.

While Arsenal started brightly, familiar defensive failings resurfaced as Teemu Pukki ended his eight-game goal drought with a shot that deflected off Shkodran Mustafi.

The hosts' lead only lasted eight minutes though, with Christoph Zimmermann penalised for handball and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang levelling for the visitors with a retaken penalty, after four Norwich players had encroached when his original effort was saved by Tim Krul.

More calamitous defending allowed Todd Cantwell to re-establish Norwich's lead, with the midfielder slicing through the Gunners defence and placing an effort into the bottom corner on the stroke of half-time.

However, Aubameyang again drew the visitors level, turning in a loose ball from a corner to ensure Arsenal gained a share of the points.

Follow all the Premier League action
New boss same leaky defence
Arsenal have a number of issues that they will need to resolve before they can hope to compete for a Premier League title again, and the most pressing remains in defence.

The Gunners arrived in Norfolk having kept just two clean sheets in the league all season and left with the joint worst defensive record of any club in the top half of the table.

An absence of leadership or quality in central defensive areas appears a fundamental flaw and not one easily addressed in the short term by Ljungberg.

Arsenal have bought defenders in recent years, but none fit the mould of a Tony Adams, Sol Campbell or Martin Keown, who were known for being commanding and who seemed to enjoy nullifying their direct opponents.

For both Norwich goals, Arsenal's current central defenders played a passive role. With the opener, David Luiz was not tight enough to prevent Pukki from turning once he had reached Kenny McLean's ball forward.

The Brazilian and his defensive partner Mustafi compounded matters by standing off and inviting the Finland forward to shoot.

For Norwich's second, Cantwell was allowed to run towards the Arsenal goal and Mustafi remained stationary as the England Under-21 international placed his effort into the far right corner from the left of the area.

On a trying afternoon for Luiz and Mustafi, Pukki was unfortunate not to add to his tally after turning the German inside out.

The duo were also thankful to goalkeeper Bernd Leno for pushing McLean's effort on to the post after he had run through the centre of the Arsenal defence unchecked.

Unfortunate Norwich
While Norwich may remain in the bottom three, they can consider themselves unfortunate not to have claimed back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since April 2016.

They matched the Gunners for shots on target and arguably had better chances overall in a performance full of energy, grit and determination.

Pukki's willing running provided an outlet from which to launch attacks, while Ibrahim Amadou showed plenty of industry in midfield and Max Aarons was solid at right-back.

Daniel Farke's side also appear to have been buoyed by the renewal of their first-choice central defensive partnership - Christoph Zimmermann and Ben Godfrey.

The solidity of that pairing was noticeable when the Canaries captain returned from injury at Everton eight days ago, and while the German conceded a penalty here he was otherwise excellent.

The 26-year-old read the game in exemplary fashion throughout and completed more clearances (eight) than any other player.

It’s now fitness our defenders lack.
It’s the absence of of grey material between their ears that’s being missed.

I think Gary Neville is right, the defenders are un-coachable

Let's see who they bring in next.

Big call whoever it is.

Dont know if its the manager or the players but they are in bad shape at the moment.

Another loss.

As I said before, time for Arsenal fans to accept their team is full of overhyped players..rather than blame management....

Reports that Allegeri is not available until June. Makes sense also, the current Arsenal set up is a real mess. You realise now that the board may have sacked Emery a bit too early, needed him to see out the season. At the moment they can possibly do with giving a bored old man at home a 6 month contract. But Allegeri needs to be secured in the meanwhile

Personally I recon the board should approach Wenger to see off 6 months. We are currently in relegation form and devoid of confidence

Arsenal situation gets worse by the day - Another test this evening!

Arsenal came from behind to end their nine-match winless streak as Freddie Ljungberg enjoyed his first victory as interim manager at the expense of his former club West Ham.

Eighteen-year-old Gabriel Martinelli marked his full Premier League debut by side-footing an equaliser which cancelled out Angelo Ogbonna's deflected first-half opener at London Stadium.

Within nine minutes, Nicolas Pepe had curled a magnificent second into the top corner and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired in a third.

The salvo turned the game on its head and piled the pressure on West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini, whose side have taken four points from their past nine league games and conceded three times in three successive home games.

The Hammers remain a point above the relegation zone in 16th and face a trip to third-bottom Southampton on Saturday. Arsenal move up two places to ninth.

Arsenal recover from dismal start
Arsenal's victory was all the more remarkable because until Martinelli added to the seven goals he has scored in cup competitions this season, the visitors had been utterly woeful.

Club officials had spoken before kick-off about the improved atmosphere triggered by Ljungberg's appointment as Unai Emery's replacement but it appeared this game would end in frustration, just as the previous two had done under the Swede.

The visitors were bereft of confidence and mild boos from the travelling support accompanied the end of a first half in which their side failed to have a shot on target and went behind when Ogbonna's header bounced in off Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

True, they did not have much luck. Hector Bellerin was injured in the warm-up and when Kieran Tierney was helped off in obvious pain with a shoulder injury sustained in a seemingly innocuous tangle with Michail Antonio, Ljungberg had lost both his first-choice full-backs in the space of half an hour.

Nevertheless, it was pitiful stuff and when Aubameyang surged down the right wing and sent over a cross that flew over everyone and straight out for a throw-in on the other side of the pitch, it was symptomatic of a club apparently heading nowhere fast.

'Nerveless' Martinelli rewards Ljungberg's faith
It was 1977 when Arsenal last went 10 matches without a win. With an away Europa League game against Standard Liege followed by a home encounter with Manchester City to come, at the interval it was not beyond the realms of possibility that the 12-game barren sequence from 1974 was going to be threatened.

With Alexandre Lacazette and David Luiz on the bench, it was two of Arsenal's most inexperienced players who sparked the change in fortune.

Ljungberg had obviously seen enough of Martinelli in two substitute appearances to trust the Brazilian with his first league start. The reward was a nerveless finish when his side needed it most. Sead Kolasinac provided the cross but there was still a lot to do for the Brazilian, who steered a first-time effort into the corner.

Emery paid a club record £72m for Pepe in August. With one league goal all season, the Frenchman has not really lived up to his billing but his goal here, a curling shot into the right-hand corner of David Martin's net, was perfect in its execution.

Aubameyang made certain of a win few would have anticipated 10 minutes earlier when his clinical finish took his tally for the season to 13. It disguised the fact he had been a virtual spectator for the first hour.

At the final whistle, Ljungberg ran to applaud the visiting fans, knowing he had given his own chances of replacing Emery a significant boost.

Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe, Hector Bellerin, Granit Xhaka & Rob Holding will miss tomorrow’s Europa League clash with Standard Liege due to injury

Arsenal came back from two-goals down to draw 2-2 at Standard Liege and progress to the last 32 of the Europa League as group winners.
The Gunners were all but through before kick-off, with the hosts needing to win 5-0 to prevent the visitors from going through to the knockout rounds - a result that looked even more unlikely after a first half Arsenal edged.

However, Samuel Bastien put the hosts ahead just after the restart when his shot deflected off Sokratis and beyond the wrong-footed Emiliano Martinez.

The goal boosted the hosts but visibly knocked the fragile confidence of the Arsenal players, who became even more nervy when Standard Liege got a second as Selim Amallah's strike from inside the area flew into the far corner via a slight deflection off Konstantinos Mavropanos.

It set things up for a tense final 20 minutes as the hosts pursued an unlikely result but Alexandre Lacazette settled the Gunners' nerves when he converted a bullet of a header.

Bukayo Saka then equalised with 10 minutes to go, curling a neat finish into the corner to secure the draw Arsenal needed to top Group F.

Gunners fight back but still work to do

It was perhaps a bit too much to expect Monday's morale-boosting win at West Ham to mark an immediate upturn in Arsenal's performances, particularly after a torrid run of nine games without victory.

As was the case in London, the Gunners were below par for over an hour of this encounter and paid the price for poor defending - an area of concern for much of this season - when no players took responsibility to close down Standard Liege's players, allowing the goalscorers to get off shots that were easily preventable.

But it took going behind to spark Arsenal into life and, after weathering pressure from the hosts, a devastating three-minute spell killed off Standard Liege's hopes of an upset.

There were glimpses of what Arsenal are capable of but the fact it took falling behind for that show is something Freddie Ljungberg or a new manager will need to address quickly to prompt a more consistent run of form.

Saka shines again

One of the few bright spots in a miserable season for Arsenal has been the emergence of Saka.

The 18-year-old has looked lively and showed plenty of endeavour in his 13 appearances so far for the Gunners but this was arguably his best performance to date.

He finished the game with an assist and goal and could have had more but was denied by two excellent saves by Arnaud Bodart in the first half.

Saka has now assisted six goals for Arsenal in all competitions this season - two more than any other player - underlining his growing importance to the Gunners.

Man of the match - Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)

Lacazette's long run continues - the stats

Arsenal avoided defeat in an away match having been two goals behind for the first time since April 2018, away at CSKA Moscow in the Europa League.

Standard Liege remain winless in all six matches against Arsenal (D1 L5), going two goals ahead in each of their last two home games against them and winning neither.

Arsenal have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 13 games in all competitions, equalling their worst run under Arsene Wenger (also 13 in a row between October and December 2004).

Alexandre Lacazette has scored 15 goals in his last 20 Europa League starts, a run stretching back to February 2017 when he played for Lyon.

What next?

Arsenal return to Premier League action this weekend as they host Manchester City on Sunday, 15 December (16:30 GMT).

Freddie Ljungberg will remain on the backroom staff at Arsenal, new head coach Mikel Arteta has confirmed.

Ljungberg, who played for Arsenal between 1998 and 2007, was caretaker boss before Arteta's arrival but they only won once in his six games in charge.

The Swede had been assistant to Unai Emery, who was sacked in November.

Spaniard Arteta takes charge of the first game of his managerial career at Bournemouth on 26 December.

He is also a former Arsenal midfielder, although joined the club four years after Ljungberg's exit.

"I spoke to Freddie after the [Everton] game," he said. "I told him my idea and the people I wanted to bring to form my coaching staff, their roles and responsibilities of each of them.

"I wanted to know what he was feeling, I wanted to know what he had in mind, what his expectations were. We talked and we made a decision that the best thing was for him to stay with us.

"I think he knows the players, he knows the situation, he knows the history of where we're coming from and also his knowledge of the game is going to really help us to be better."

Arteta has not named his coaching team yet but former Everton and Manchester United assistant boss Steve Round will be involved.

Granit Xhaka has agreed terms with Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin, according to the Arsenal midfielder's agent.

Sky Germany reported last week that Hertha head coach Jurgen Klinsmann was eager to sign Xhaka in January, and Sky Sports News understands talks between the two clubs are continuing.

It is understood Arsenal are looking to recoup as much of the £35m they paid Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016, but Xhaka's agent José Noguera is hopeful a move can be concluded.

Noguera said: "Look, I say it frankly and honestly: we agree with Hertha BSC and would like to go to Berlin. We told Arsenal's club boss Raul Sanllehi and sports director Edu - as well as the new trainer Mikel Arteta. "

He added: "Arsenal was informed about all the steps, the player and Hertha are clear. It is only about the transfer fee of the clubs."

Xhaka started new head coach Arteta's first game in charge, a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth on Boxing Day.

Arteta, who was previously assistant manager at Manchester City, even recommended his former club sign Xhaka before he moved to Arsenal.

However, the Swiss international looks set for a move away from the Emirates after a controversial few months which included being stripped as club captain for gesturing towards and swearing at fans while being booed off against Crystal Palace.

Hertha currently sit 12th in the Bundesliga, just four points off the relegation play-off place.

Arteta hails Arsenal's 'spot-on' attitude
Arteta said the attitude of his Arsenal players was "spot on" after they fought back to salvage a draw at Bournemouth on his managerial debut.

Arteta hailed the attitude of his Arsenal players after his managerial debut
He said: "I'm very pleased with some of the things I've seen in terms of attitude, character, the passion we showed, and the fight and the spirit the team showed.

"[It was] spot on, probably better than I expected over 90 minutes.

"A lot of things that happened in the game we prepared, I think they understood them and they tried to take them on board and we liked the final product at the end.

"I was worried what would have happened if we conceded a goal, and we did, and I was very pleased with the character they showed, how they came in at half-time, their faces, their reactions, how much they wanted it.

"Because normally when they are in this process and you concede a goal, belief goes down and a lot of things that have happened in the past can come back.

"And it didn't happen, it happened completely the opposite side and that's a real positive to take on board.

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta says he is keen to avoid cliques in the team as he continues to shape his squad, on and off the pitch.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has skippered the side since Granit Xhaka was stripped of the captaincy in November following his outburst against supporters during the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.

Hector Bellerin, Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil also remain from the original five-man leadership group under Unai Emery, who held a blind ballot among his squad to decide who would captain them.

But as he prepares his side for their FA Cup third-round tie against Leeds at the Emirates on Monday night, Arteta - a former Arsenal skipper himself - is keen to engender a sense of togetherness among his players.

"The leadership many times is related to how this team lives together," he said.

"The moment you start to see different groups, they have leaders in these groups, but they are not shared in the best common interests of the group and this is what I wanted to avoid.

"We have some leaders, some are more leaders on the pitch and some more outside the pitch. Some have influence to players that is very necessary. We want to bring all together.

"The more stability we can generate with our captain and the players we have in the squad, I think the more clarity we will have to transmit to the fans what we are trying to do.

"There are many factors, some we cannot control, but at the moment everything is OK and not the time for me to change things in place because I haven't seen real things to make the decisions.

"I have been at clubs that have four or five captains. It is more a leadership group than captains. At the end it is one guy wearing the armband and after the team picks the leaders.

"The moment they pick the leaders is when someone talks if they listen or they are looking at the roof. That is when you see."

Arsenal have to take the FA Cup "very seriously" and become "addicted" to winning, says head coach Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners host Leeds United in the third round on Monday in a match to be broadcast live on BBC One and the BBC Sport website (19:56 GMT kick-off).

Ex-captain Arteta returned to Arsenal last month, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal to succeed Unai Emery.

"We have to be challenging for the cups and we'll try to do that again this season," said Arteta.

Arsenal have won the FA Cup a record 13 times, three of which have come in the past six years. Former midfielder Arteta started their 2014 final victory and was also a winner in 2015, though he missed the showpiece at Wembley.

"It is a competition that is very attached to this football club in recent years and we have to take it very seriously," said the 37-year-old Spaniard.

"I think winning brings togetherness, and when you have beautiful experiences together and you win trophies, those experiences stay within that group.

"After you win, you don't want to stop winning. You become addicted to that - and that is what we have to try and implement at this club."

The Premier League side will be without defender Calum Chambers, who has been ruled out for at least six months with a ruptured cruciate ligament.

Forward Gabriel Martinelli and full-back Hector Bellerin have been nursing hamstring problems and will both be assessed before Monday's game at Emirates Stadium.

Leeds, who are top of the Championship, are without forward Eddie Nketiah, who was on loan from Arsenal but who has now been recalled.

Head coach Marcelo Bielsa says defender Robbie Gotts and goalkeeper Illan Meslier will make their debuts, with defenders Gaetano Berardi and Barry Douglas also starting.

"Of course it is a big challenge for us. It is enough to see the players and the prestige and level they have," said Argentine Bielsa.

"When people think that we are the favourite in one match, we don't consider things like that - and neither do we with the opposite, which is in this case.

"Every time we compete, we trust in our resources and respect our opponent's resources.

"We will always do this with the wish to impose our style, and we will try to do this on Monday."

On the challenge posed by their Championship opponents, Arteta added: "I know how tough it will be to play against them.

"[Bielsa] makes them fight, challenge, run, compete and never give up in any game or any circumstances."

Mikel Arteta is hopeful Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will sign a contract extension at Arsenal but says no talks are currently ongoing with the Gabon international.

The 30-year-old striker has 18 months left on his current deal and newspaper reports from Spain have claimed Real Madrid will make a player-plus-cash offer for Aubameyang worth up to £70m.

However, Aubameyang rubbished those reports in Arsenal's matchday programme prior to their 1-0 win over Leeds United in the FA Cup on Monday night, insisting he loves playing for the Gunners.

"I was very pleased to read those comments," Arteta said. "He knows exactly what I think about him and obviously he is a massive player for us.

"But at the moment we are in the middle of the season and we have not discussed anything further on that."

Arsenal's managing director Vinai Venkatesham said in May the club would look to sell anyone entering the final two years of their contract should they not wish to renew their deals, in a bid to avoid a repeat of what happened with Aaron Ramsey, who left to join Juventus on a free transfer last summer.

However, the club appear to have softened their stance on that - at least in regard to their leading scorer - and Arteta was clear keeping Aubameyang is a major priority for him.

Arteta explained: "My intention is to keep Auba because I know that if we keep Auba with us, we are going to be stronger and closer to winning football matches."

Asked if he is confident Aubameyang will re-sign, Arteta replied: "I don't know. We have not discussed that but I am confident that he is very happy here because that is what he said."

Arteta does not foresee Arsenal spending big money in January after committing close to £150m in transfer fees in the summer.

But an injury to Calum Chambers, who faces nine months out after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee against Chelsea, means Arsenal are looking for defensive reinforcements.

The Gunners have inquired about Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng.

Asked about signings, Arteta said: "I am not expecting big things [in the market]. I am expecting big things from the players I have at the moment and the players that are recovering from injury.

"[But] if we can find something to help us at the moment to get through the season in a more balanced way in certain areas and it is helpful, then we will look at the options.

"We always have to be looking [to strengthen]. We have some bad injuries to players who are going to be out for a long time and we have to see if we can find options there."

Arteta also confirmed the club are considering offers from a number of clubs to take Emile Smith-Rowe, Tyreece John-Jules and Eddie Nketiah out on loan for the rest of the season.

"We are assessing the situation with three of them," Arteta confirmed.

"We are evaluating all the offers that they have from different clubs, what would suit them more and whether it is the right time for them to make that step.

"In the next few days we will tell you exactly what will happen."

Mikel Arteta apologised for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's red card tackle on Max Meyer, calling it "nasty" but insisted it was an out of character challenge.

Arsenal were reduced to 10 men in the second half of their 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace when VAR intervened to send off Aubameyang for a dangerous tackle after referee Paul Tierney had originally booked the player.

Max Meyer's foot gave way under him, twisting his ankle at a horrific angle from the force of the Arsenal's striker tackle and the Palace man was immediately substituted with manager Roy Hodgson believing he's suffered ankle ligament damage.

Arteta had no complaints with the decision to upgrade the punishment from a yellow to a red card.

He said: "I've just seen it and it looked nasty to be fair - knowing Auba there is no intention to make that tackle - hopefully the player hasn't been injured. Sorry for that."

Arsenal looked in full control of the match in the first half after Aubameyang's opener but allowed Palace to equalise courtesy of a deflected Jordan Ayew strike.

"I think the first 35 minutes were exactly what I want our Arsenal team to play like," Arteta said.

"We were at it, we were very dominant, we controlled the game, we were in the right positions and we were so good in transition.

"After that we had a spell when we started to give free-kicks away, it's more stop-start, but I was really pleased with the first half. The first 10 minutes of the second half, credit to them because they pushed, put balls in the box and threw men up front. We had more difficulties.

"We conceded a goal where we switched off completely and it's unacceptable, I am upset with that, but after that we reacted very well after conceding goal and after Auba's red card, we were the team that I expected because everyone was at it again."

Lucas Torreira was substituted at half-time in the draw having been seen struggling with a muscle problem for various parts of the first half.

Arteta said: "It's a muscle injury. We'll have to assess it with the doctors tomorrow. We will know more the day after."

Crystal Palace manager Hodgson concurred with Arteta that Aubameyang's challenge was worthy of a red card but thought it was an accidental bad challenge.

"He's not happy," Hodgson said when asked about how Meyer felt about the challenge.

"I knew it was a bad challenge but I'd like to emphasise Aubameyang hasn't deliberately tried injuring the player. It's the type of challenges forwards can make when chasing back. There's no doubt it's a red card and a bad challenge. I'm just surprised we had to wait so long for the decision.

"The position of ankle isn't pleasant - I'll be very surprised if there's no ligament damage. He was very upbeat in the sense he'll be OK and he'll get over it but we must wait until Monday when the doctors report back."

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta says his players have to step up and score goals in the absence of suspended captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gabon international will serve a three-game ban after he was sent off in the 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on Saturday for a high challenge on Max Meyer, following a VAR review.

Aubameyang, who scored his 14th goal of the Premier League season to give Arsenal the lead at Selhurst Park, will now miss the league games against Sheffield United, Chelsea and the FA Cup trip to Bournemouth.

Asked whether the onus was now on other players to come to the fore, Arteta replied: "They now have to make a step forward now he is not able to contribute to the team with goals.

"Someone else has to do it and I want to see that reaction too."

Alexandre Lacazette, who has started alongside Aubameyang in all four of Arteta's league games, is the other leading forward at the club, while Arteta will also look towards Nicolas Pepe, Gabriel Martinelli and Reiss Nelson.

"Losing probably the most important player is never nice," Arteta said.

"We have other players that can play in that position. We will try to find a way and be as competitive as possible."

But Arteta appears in no rush to introduce academy graduate Eddie Nketiah into first-team contention after he was recalled from his loan spell to Leeds earlier this month.

"I think we have to think long term with Eddie," said the Spaniard of the 20-year-old.

"We have to respect his evolution, his development and we don't have to make decisions just based on two or three games."

https://www.skysports.com/football/...players-must-step-forward-in-strikers-absence

Forward Eddie Nketiah will stay at Arsenal for the rest of the season rather than go back out on loan.

The 20-year-old was linked with a loan move to Championship side Bristol City after being recalled from a loan spell at Leeds United earlier this month.

Nketiah only started two league games for Leeds, although he did score five goals in his spell at Elland Road.

Arsenal are without top goalscorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the next three matches through suspension.

The Gabon striker, who has scored 14 Premier League goals this season, was shown a straight red card in the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace, with the Gunners failing in their attempt to have his three-game ban overturned.

Alexandre Lacazette has scored six times for the Gunners in 2019-20, record signing Nicolas Pepe has only grabbed five goals, although there have also been eight goals in all competitions from 18-year-old striker Gabriel Martinelli.

Nketiah came through the Arsenal academy and has scored three senior goals for them - two in a 2-1 League Cup fourth-round win over Norwich in October 2017 and one in a 3-1 victory over Burnley in May in their final league game of 2018-19.

Arsenal are 10th in the Premier League, in the fourth round of the FA Cup and the last 32 of the Europa League.

Flamengo defender Pablo Mari arrived in London ahead of an anticipated move to Arsenal.

Mari is expected to join the Gunners on loan with an option to buy – which is reportedly set at £7.5million – after arriving at Heathrow Airport with Arsenal technical director Edu on Saturday.

The 26-year-old is set to become Mikel Arteta's first signing since taking over as head coach in December.

Mari joined Manchester City in 2016 but never played for the first team, leaving for Flamengo last July after loan stints at Girona, NAC Breda and Deportivo La Coruna.

The 26-year-old was a key figure under Jorge Jesus, who led the Rio de Janeiro giants to the Campeonato Brasileiro and Copa Libertadores titles.

He also featured when Flamengo lost the Club World Cup final against Liverpool 1-0 after extra time.

Arsenal have been keen to bolster their defensive options following injuries to Calum Chambers, Kieran Tierney and Sead Kolasinac.

Arsenal remain in talks with Flamengo over the signing of defender Pablo Mari.

Mari has returned to Brazil having arrived in England on Saturday for talks with Arsenal, but Sky Sports News have been told this was always the plan and the Gunners are still hopeful they can conclude a deal.

Arsenal are looking to sign the Spaniard on loan until the end of the season with an option to buy.

The 26-year-old would become Mikel Arteta's first signing since taking over as Arsenal head coach in December.

Mari signed a contract with Manchester City in 2016, but never played for them.

He went out on loan for three successive seasons to Girona, NAC and Deportivo La Coruna, before joining Flamengo on a permanent deal last summer.

Mari's Flamengo side won Brazil's Serie A, with the defender featuring in 22 of the 38 games, scoring twice as Flamengo finished 16 points clear of Santos and Palmeiras.

Arsenal have completed the signing of defender Cédric Soares on loan from Southampton until the end of the season

Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette have both backed Mikel Arteta's tactical changes at Arsenal despite having only won three games since he took over.

Arteta took over from interim head coach Freddie Ljungberg in December and Arsenal are tenth in the Premier League after his first seven games in charge.

While the results have not improved significantly, Ozil and Lacazette feel the team has united under Arteta's tactical philosophy.

Ozil, talking at Arsenal's Dubai warm-weather training camp, said: "As a team, we are much happier and everyone wants to give everything for this club.

"Especially tactically we improve a lot and I hope in the future we will be more successful."

Lacazette, who has not scored since Arteta took charge, echoed Ozil's view on the coach and team morale.

"We are more together now. The way we think as well on the pitch and outside the pitch. Tactically we are better and we're going to see a big improvement in the next few weeks."

Hector Bellerin agreed about the changes being made by the former Arsenal captain since taking charge and the end of last year.

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta praises the Premier League's winter break, giving him valuable time with his team to train and get away.

"It's very early doors in time. [Mikel] has a new philosophy and the way he has implemented it in the last few games that we've played, there's been a big change," he told the club's website.

"I think sometimes we need to be a bit more efficient in front of goal [but] that's also something that comes with confidence, when you see that you're playing better and controlling games better, the goals are something that's going to come. I'm sure you're going to see that very quickly.

"For us, the promise is that we're trying to get better every single day. When a different coach comes, there are different things that you're being asked to do.

Best wishes, hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Hope Mikel makes a speedy recovery!
