Asad Shafiq, a failure in pressure situations?

A great innings, but he remains to be a one great innings per series type of player.

I would insist again that he is not a choker; he is just inconsistent, and struggles to consistently score both soft and hard runs.

Shafiq really needs a series where he doesn't get out for single digit scores 2-3 times and gets 2 hundreds and a fifty etc.

Such an ignorant attitude is going to take you places. You clearly failed to read that he fails 'mostly'. With mostly being the key word. Try to read properly next time.

Ironic that you're trying to point something out when the initial post you quoted was in response to someone saying that Shafiq always fails under pressure.

It is also inconspicuous to say that he fails mostly under pressure because while he isn't oblivious to pressure, he tends to perform around 50% of the time. He is, as other posters have mentioned, an inconsistent player too often scoring several big innings in a row irrespective of the match situation and then some low scores in a row too; so no Shafiq does not fail mostly under pressure.

He was out on 8 with Nz having no reviews left.

All eyes on him now.

#AsadShafiq really wants to beat #Sobers average at #6.. protecting his average by not taking any risks #PakvNZ #NZvPak He Learned from best

I don't agree with his demotion. Its a reaction to his ducks but shouldn't have ignored his hundred at 3 after promotion.

For Pakistan to have any chance in this match we need atleast a Fifty from Shafiq.

He is a protected species....So he must be protected at all cost by Misbah and saved from more failures at 3.

Big Loser in this case is Babar..Asad was given 6 years at #6, kept in a blanket...given every chance to grow and mature as a batsman to one day move out of # 6 and be 3 or 4 but same chance of growing as a player was not offered to Umar nor Babar.

lol #6 is not some easy position you paint out

you face reversing old ball and then the new ball as well and have to bat many of your innings with the tail. you are living in some fantasy world if you think that a nervous youngster would have done well with the lower order after the wreckage the top order saw

also umar akmal failed thats why he was dropped. and he never gave any indidcation for a recall. kept failing in ODIs and domestic FC where he scored 1 century in like 4 years despite playing whole seasons. Dont lie abt akmal's failure. Only person to blame there is he, himself

I was mocked by a lot when I called out Shafiq way earlier than some could.

Shafiq is THE golden boy of Pak cricket. Was given countless chances in ODIs despite failing.

Then, in Tests, he's been given a free ride nonstop in the hopes that one day he'll be a settled batsman, who can bat for us specially in tough conditions and replace Misbah/YK.

But, all these 6 years, and the result we have is someone meek who is continuously failing against the moving ball, swing, seam, incoming delivery, short ball.

And, the pressure gets to him on easy pitches too!

WHAT THE HELL!?

His demotion to number 6 has put him in further pressure.

Looks nervous.

Even after those ducks i would have given him confidence and would have sticked with him at number 3.

You should have turned your tv on after lunch session lol at least we will have something to defend to.:P

Shafiq is becoming a serious problem now. He is adding too many failures to the list. Didn't expect him to play such a poor shot under such circumstances. This innings was for offering.
I didn't see much movement today. Could have easily scored some runs.

Poor stuff. Exposing the tail and then getting out himself. That's why I laugh when people suggest Misbah and YK should retire because after they are all gone all you are left is the likes of Shafiq who still bats like he is playing his debut match. It's been 6 years since his debut yet he doesn't give the impression of a senior and an experience player which he no doubt is.

Yes I see the others are doing so well.....

He has more under pressure knocks than Azhar outside Asia thats for sure.

Cape Town, Lords, Oval and countless in UAE and SL ofcourse

Azhar outside Asia is just Edgbaston so far

but yes i agree he has been poor since start of west indies series.

Azhar isn't spared from my criticism, said the same about him in other threads. However, Azhar has done just a bit more than Shafiq specially at 3.

But both haven't done good enough in swing/seam conditions.

In the 1st test vs England he scored in a pressure situation and vs South Africa in 2013 he scored a century.

Look how you wait for him to fail. He has played some good knocks overseas but I'll admit he's been inconsistent away from home for the most part

Also people here are acting as if Shafiq personally made the decision to bat at #6 again.

Since his move up the order he scored:
109
67
5
58*
0
0

With the duck it is an aaverage of 47.8

But the ducks are an anomaly and up until that match he had averaged 80 with the bat since his move up the order

So whose to blame here?

One bad match (after which he still had a decent record), he is demoted (if what PPers say is true and it wasnt the tactical decision to give Babar a preferred position and play Asad at a position where he is one of the best of all time?)

The team management is to blame here

My biggest issue with him is his mental frailty. I dont think there has been any other young batsman in our recent history who has such total and unwavering support of the captain, yet Asad bats like someone who isnt sure of his place in the next match.

If I had made an investment in a business, with the same story of shafiq's career, then I'd be broke by now and tearing my hair out.

Invested 6 years into the business and just when you know it is time to make a huge profit, instead you're still making losses.

Shehzad says hi

also his position WAS chopped and changed on a whim eventhough he had a century and a couple of fifties (1 unbeaten one) in five innings he had played since his move up the order. One failure and you just lose your mind?

I agree. Shafiq should have continued batting at three. It was criminal from the management to drop him only after a couple of failures. Babar is still too raw for Test cricket and has no business batting at three instead of Asad Shafiq. I expected Mickey Arthur to be much better than this but seems like he is similar to the ones we've had before.

I think Shafiq is just going through a rough patch right now, and I fully back him to make a comeback soon. I think some of his critics are just being overly harsh on him as I have seen some people who already want him dropped from the team. That is not the right way to go. I do feel very bad for him as in situations like these, you need to be given confidence but instead everyone is out for him already.

Our fans are usually too quick to jump on a bandwagon.

Having said, I think Shafiq needs to put more work into his batting in the nets. We have seen him getting out many times to the swinging deliveries and I think he should have made adjustments by now which is also disappointing in a way.

Today was a perfect opportunity for Shafiq to score big but alas.

and some always wanted him dropped when he was doing very very well. Some posters no longer with us (but will return soon enough) were claiming Haris sohail would have scored twice as many centuries as Asad if given same opportunity. Ofcourse that would mean breaking record of Sobers, Border etc by a country mile.

This is just eid+christmas combined for them. sad thing is everyone else is failing too and pak is losing so its not just an isolated issue

Nothing we can specifically do about people driven by their agendas.

Asad's shot in that situation only confirms why he'll never be an ODI batsman.. almost like Fawad Alam, he will never be the one to get quick runs when required even in that situation

I am generally in agreement with you regarding the hastiness of putting Shafiq back down the order but do you consider #6 a tougher position to bat than #3 on a green pitch?

No. But in midst of a collapse (which was always a likelihood here) there's equally a lot of pressure at #6 and at that moment both positions are equally difficult and number 6 comes with added pressure as your 4-5 wickets down.

I do think that on super flat wickets a #3 gets to cash in more than a #6 though as there are declarations and the like

Bring in Usman Salahuddin. He has been very consistent in domestic for so long now

Pretty much this. The huge investment isn't paying off, specially when he's really required. We can't expect Misbah to bail us out every time.

Shafiq s consistency has been an issue and in swing/seam conditions he's even more nervy.

It's absurd to think that the most pampered golden boy whose position was changed once in 6 years is the reason he's failing.

No, he's been inconsistent before too. And this change of position doesn't justify anything.

It's true, he has always been inconsistent, but him being promoted to no. 3 further exposed his inconsistencies and unlike batting at no. 6, he will always be greeted with fresh and high energy bowlers, hence less chances of him getting that odd hundred.

I called it out long time back.

I was bashed by a lot of people here, but that usually happens when you stick your neck out.

Shehzad, Nawaz, Shafiq. All turned out to be average cricketers.

With Shafiq the question is not even about pressure anymore.

Is he a failure on anything non flat?

As I said before, you are looking at it wrongly. He is not a failure under pressure; he is simply not consistent, regardless of the level of pressure.

He neither scores enough soft runs nor does he score enough hard runs.

A player is a failure under pressure when he scores consistently without pressure but goes missing when he's under the pump.

Shafiq has never scored consistently, but he has played some good pressure and some good no-pressure knocks in between.

Asad needs to be benched !!! I am done cheer leading for him if he's gonna lay 5 eggs every six months or so :livid:

Needs to play a bit of English League cricket or a county stint to get back into contention....Should be dropped ASAP

Yes, the inconsistency does give that impression, specially if it's more of 80% inconsistent and the rest is "yes, he did play a knock".

I am not happy with the demise of Asad Shafiq.

In Canadian term this is like I invest in RRSP in all my working years to be used in retirement years, only to find out after retirement that all my RRSP investment have been wiped out. :livid:

He is nothing but a Pakistani Hashan Tillakaratne. He will score some runs here and there at #6 but will never carry the burden of his team's batting.

He is not consistent enough outside Asia(WI, Eng, SA and NZ), he has scored a hundred in Eng and SA but his average is only 28.

Really disappointing from Shafiq

It was time for him to step up and take over from Younis and Misbah. Sadly, that has not happened.

For the 86th time he has shown why he has not been a success in ODI cricket. Asad doesn't like the pressure to score as he finds it hard to get the ball away.

There was no pressure to score really, Pakistan had given up the chase after Sarfraz got out...

Perhaps he was under pressure to not make another duck, though.

As usual, it's the ball on his pads which he tries to clip away which gets him into trouble. Normally it's LBW or bowled, this time it was a leading edge.

He is just a 40-45 average player but can't afford to drop him after having invested so many years on him. If you drop him now, with Misbah and YK on their last legs and Sami and Babar starting out, it will completely unsettle the team. First find replacements for Misbah and YK, until then the 40-45 runs Asad can give are good enough.

Some batsmen just aren't mentally tough enough to survive or score runs in tougher situations. The fact that he doesn't find singles often enough only makes it worse for him.

To the contrary. You can't afford to sink more into him if he is not worth it.

6 years of investment and still failing, not forget he is already 30 or something.

Worthless investment and an embarrassing one.

This isn't a pressure situation the match is practically lost. He's scored 40 runs in a chase where we are 220!runs behind. I hope he keeps playing and does a miracle but I really doubt it.

Azhar and Yk knocks were under pressure.

Things have eased out now as its a matter of time before Aus wins it. But Shafiq would do good if he can stay not out here.

Actually,

I'm starting to rate this knock. Yes, it has somewhat become a 'dead rubber', but let's not take all the credit away from Asad.

I would really respect this knock if he can get a 100 here. :shafiq But so far a job well done, too.

If he survives till last even though Pak loses this has to be regarded as a very good knock. But if its all out sooner then just a decent knock and he has to show up in other games too.

But its hard really to expect much with the Pakistani tail as they mostly go for a slog.

This innings will again be counted a useless innings unless a miracle happens and we end up winning this game some how which seems very unlikely

Good knock today but the biggest problem with him his far too passive and dozey. Needs to come out of his 'comfort bubble' and show some umph. Even playing with the tail it seems he can't be bothered to put the added energy.

Good but ultimately useless innings. The story of most of Shafiq's knocks.

81* of 125 balls..That is a good counter attacking inning but the destination is still too far.

good knock but cant really say its a pressure situation because no one expected us to do anything or be able to chase this. Its a great fighting knock though. Its earned some respectability for Pakistan

As I said before, it's not about pressure. He has played many pressure knocks and today was another one, it's just that he's inconsistent.

Most of his hundreds have actually been pressure knocks.

Very good knock. But somebody mentioned that he was dropped by Smith. His 100 in South Africa is still his best 100.

Real pressure will come now, a real even if slight chance of victory,if he gives his wicket away tommiriw it will be a soft knock, good but soft/presurreless

tomorrow will decide if his 100 was for himself or Pakistan. If Pakistan bowled out within an hour then this 100 will be consider selfish and only for himself. If Pakistan still bowled out but survived more than an hour then this 100 will be consider stuff of legend.

Poor logic. For all we know, Yasir and Rahat are gonna get out on consecutive deliveries

Asad will be facing the 1st ball tomorrow. He should try to shield Yasir and Rahat especially Rahat. Thats one of the responsibilities of batsman at #6. If he can do it for 1 hour at least then I am sold on this inning of his as one of the best ever by a #6.

Yea

We need to go for the win and it wouldn't happen if anyone sets out to shield his partner

Dunno why but I have a bad feeling it will be over within 2-3 overs
