Asad Shafiq breaks Sir Gary Sobers' record of most hundreds by a #6 batsman [Update Post #162]

He can be a good number 3 for the ODIs but only two out of Azhar, Sami, and Shafiq can be in the playing eleven.

Missing: Shafiq haters who wanted him dropped for Fawad/Rizwan/Sharjeel/Akmal just because he failed to bully the West Indies at home. If found, please disregard anything they tell you from now on because they clearly have zero idea what they are talking about.

Doesn't mean anything

And he isn't even a 6 batsman

Chicken ran from 3 back to 6

He should be 4/5

Golden boy is protected

Ran back from 3 to 6 to be protected. Not an achievement by any means and what makes it worse is that majority of these centuries have been in losing causes.

Did he ask management that he wants to bat at 3? did he ask management that he does not want to bat at 3?

To those naive kids who are saying he "ran from 3 to 6"

Why is no.3 batsmen soo glorified? Because that guy plays the brand new ball. If anyone watched the game today properly then he would had noticed that shafiq had to face the second new ball and he survived it

Yes he's protected at coming at 100/5rather than 80/2

So PP is back to loving Shafiq again :))

I just hope he gets the job done, I would love to see Smith's dropped catches cost Aus a Test and to go 1-6 in his last 7 tests.

Yes, I'm still bitter about those phaintys we've received from them in the last year or so :sanga

He gave a press conference last night saying he prefers to bat at 3. Personally I thInk he should bat at number 6: he will always have an influential role in setting up the match

Pathetic.

Shafiq now has a century in Australia, England and South Africa. He really should be averaging much higher than what he is now. Quality batsman.

Yes with his technique he should be , but he lacks consistency especially failing to make the 20s and 30s when not hitting those big scores which is costing the team a lot... recently been through very lean patch of scores.

Are you suggesting Shafiq > Sobers? :13:

When he scores he looks brilliant and the best Pakistan batsmen however he is inconsistent. More consistency is expected when one has played 50+ test matches. He should be targeting to average between 45-50 rather than early 40s

Whatsoever the case, the fact is that number 3 in the Pakistani team is held by a newbie test player and the so called senior player is hiding at the number 6 spot after failing at number 3. Giving credit where due is nice but recency bias should not cloud your judgement.

Except everything you just said is rubbish. There are multiple interviews from team members (and shafiq) over the last two days that Mickey has asked him to go back to six in order to play Azam upfront. Such ignorance in this day and age of Google and Twitter is inexcusable

Oh, definitely, it is the "actual" reason for his shift to number 6. I guess i should believe in this drivel because you are saying so.

I agree but Is that Asad's decision to go back at 6? Does asad have authority to decided where he wants to bat?

No you should stop being lazy and go to the Australian grandstand website and the cricket Australia website and listen to the interviews. If you want to indulge in amateur theories I can recommend a few shows on ptv with bitter ex players and ex employees who inhabit the same reality that you are in.

If he is doing the job at 6 and we have a player who can bat at 3, i dont know why we have to go by tradition and promote the senior from number 6 to number 3.

Also when he batted at 3, at that point why our number 6 batsman did not score any runs?
I think we should appreciate whoever scores runs and does not matter which position they score.

He was demoted for a better word for not being able to perform at the number 3 which was supposed to be his natural progression from number 6. You don't play in number 6 position in cricket for whole of your cricketing life as a batsman.

Look, i am basing my opinion on this: http://www.pakpassion.net/ppforum/s...go-back-to-his-old-position-quot-Waqar-Younis

I am not the only one. Read the comments of rest of these posters. Most of them believe he has been demoted. I am not saying that you are wrong but what is put out externally does not always mirror what is going inside the team.

exactly, that means our number 3 batsman is not capable to play at 3 because Asad is hiding at 3. I think people now try to blame asad for babar's failure.

I am sure babar is capable enough to come back strong.

natural progression from number 6 to would be number 5??? How come he would go to 3? Then what about misbah and YK's progression?

Some folks are just deluding themselves to think that number 6 is some easy position

It's not. You are either coming in while there is carnage around you as we often see due to our collapses. Otherwise the innings is set and you have to come and score at a quick rate.

Also you end up facing both the new ball and the old ball so have to contend with that

Then there is the added pressure of playing with the tail.

lets be honest. For a team like Pakistan which is prone to collapses and whose tailenders more often than not are walking wickets, number 6 is a thankless position

By some wierd twist of fate, Garry Sobers was actually at this test match

What could have been the odds!

Forgive my snark - it was not required.
I agree with you he was demoted because he did at number 3 what he has done in his career so far: a few high scores and then single digit scores: so it was not very convincing. What I am litigating here is that it does not seem to be his decision to bat at number 6.

Honestly I've been waiting for him to surpass this record. Playing at No.6 for so long and to finally get some type of achievement is amazing. Not to forget the memorable hundreds he's got.

Broke a World record, allround game, centuries in SA, England and now a century at the fast and bouncy Gabba.

I think with the probable retirements of YK and Misbah, he should be our new #4 on a permanent basis as he is surely our best test batsman.

Number 4 and 5 are already occupied. 3 was the vacant spot. Progression has to do with him jumping up from 6 to any of the number above.

Its alright. No problem.

Yes, i agree that it might not be his decision but either way he is playing at number 6 now which is a damn shame if you ask me. After so much investment Pakistan cricket has put into him and after having a fairly long career he hasn't progressed and is still inconsistent and has not improved. He has potential and always had that but it has remained unfulfilled so far which is frustrating for someone who has been seeing Pakistan cricket since a long time.

great effort by Shafiq but at this stage of his test career he should be batting at 3 or 4.

IF Shafiq can bring Pakistan to victory, it will do wonders for his confidence.

If he can somehow pull this off, I reckon he'll be in the top 5 Test batsmen in the coming year.

They are the same bachay who like sixes and akmal jnr..ignore em

Shafiq becomes the 15th Pakistan player to score 10 test hundreds.

4 of the 15 are playing in this test.

why with him? he started his career at 6? This is a double standard. number 3 spot was vacant because Azhar Ali moved up, team management needs to find some else at 3. They tried Asad which did not work because they tried him only for 2 matches.

Just for your information: This is from the Cricinfo. Azhar's interview

"He's a special player. I've always rated him as a very fine player, because batting at No. 6 is never easy," Azhar said. "But as a team plan, he started batting [up the order], but again the team manager thinks that this is our best combination. As team players we always are willing to play wherever our team needs. He's a brilliant player who can bat at any number. Hopefully he gets his number soon.

"He bats at number six really well. He could be probably better than any of us [there]. That's probably the reason he got back at number six. Sometimes you have to make decisions according to the situation, according to the team plan. That's why I went to open the batting, because of the requirement of the team. It's a team game, so we're all happy with what the team demands of us."

All those saying that asad was failure at number 3 have short memory or don't want to acknowledged this brilliant batsman. First time when he was promoted to number 4 in oval (he was supposed to come at 3 but due to nightwatchman he came at 4)he scored century. In the next 2 matches his runs at number 3 were 67,5,68 and 57. He had a pair in third test against west indies and that was his only failure at 3. And he has saved Pakistan so many times from his rearguard actions either by preventing a total collapse or by scoring fast to set up a target.
Also those saying his centuries resulted in defeats please know that out of 9 centuries before this one, 4 were in wins, 3 in defeats and 2 were draw. I hope people don't let their hate blind them.

Asad Shafiq is in elite list of player to have score over 2500 runs in Test at batting #6

The bad news for pakistan is that we are stuck with Rahat Ali , australia wont leave grass on pitch so according to micky arthur imran khan becomes unselectable and according to arthur Sohail Khan can't play a test match.

These things should have been discussed with Inzamam ul haq before the series , you do not come in the middle of a test match and say that these guys in the squad are not good enough to be in the squad. In case one of the fast bowler is unfit then arthur is forced to play a bowler he does not even want in the squad?

Happy Birthday to Asad Shafiq - turns 31 yrs old today...

What does the future hold for him? Test place looks good but LOI formats are beyond him it seems

Happy birthday to a very good test batsmen. Needs to step up with the imminent retirement of Misbah and Younis.
