In a press conference held at ACB Headquarters in Kabul, ACB Chairman Azizullah Fazli announced that All-rounder Rashid Khan has been appointed as team Afghanistan’s new captain across all three formats of the game replacing Gulbadin Naib while former skipper Asghar Afghan will serve as the Vice-captain.

Addressing the press conference which also featured CEO Lutfullah Stanikzai and Rashid Khan, Mr. Fazli said, “Me and other board members met H.E President Ashraf Ghani yesterday at the presidential palace. The president assured of the government’s full support to ACB and instructed the board to take required steps for the betterment of Cricket.”

Fazli added that the decision to appoint Rashid Khan as Captain across all three formats was taken after consulting Chief Selector Andy Moles and other board members. He thanked Rashid for accepting the major responsibility and expressed hope that he will be a successful leader.

ACB’s newly appointed CEO, Lutfullah Stanikzai also addressed the media and remarked that there are many expectations from Rashid who is a global cricket star and has the ability to take the team forward.

Rashid Khan called his new role as the National Captain as a major responsibility on his shoulders and expressed hope that using his experience, he will be able to be successful in his new role for the National Team.

He further said: “There are no issues in the team, we all play as one team and play only for the country. Whatever I am today, is because of this country and this team.”

Khan called Asghar Afghan’s experience valuable for the team and said that he will strive to make best use of his experience during his tenure as Captain.

How old is Rashid Khan again ?

Afghan Board is becoming another typical inept, political desi cricket board.

Lets leave his age out of this - pointless discussing it!

Just think he is being given too much importance as he is supposed to be their best player. Whether he has leadership abilities is another issue.

So nice of Afghanistan to appoint a 'young' captain will serve them for next 8-10 years :yk

On topic, Rashid Khan appears arrogant and hot headed. Qualities you do not want in a captain. Anyways their team is too big of a minnow to even matter.

Nabi should be the captain.

He has been in the team for a long time, he performs and he looks composed all the time.

I think this was the popular decision but not necessarily the right one.

Rashid can be a little hot-headed at times but it is a new era in Afghanistan.

8-10 years, nah. He is just 20, he has got atleast 15-17 years of international cricket remaining. :smith

They are following India. Rashid Khan to do toss and for everything else ashgar.

While he doesn't look 20-21 like he claims, he can't be more than 26-27 so still younger than you :afridi

As per some news reports he is 32. Someone found out his Pakistan ID card and that was the age.

I think Rashid Latif once claimed that he spotted Mujeeb as a teen in a cricket camp in Afghanistan back in 2010.

Reminder: Mujeeb claims to be born in 2001.

Don't see an happy ending with this. Rashid does come across as arrogant and being by far the best player in the team I can see issues ahead. The Afghan team could actually fall apart in the next few years.

dang, you know what - he actually does look around 30.

Many Afghan cricket players are still carrying Pakistani ID cards and passports. This was disclosed and discussed in a meeting of public accounts sub-committee of Pakistan upper house of parliament(Senate) which took place a couple of days ago. Members are demanding the government should cancel their Pakistan ID cards.

Afghanistan has quite a few emotional players in its squad. By "emotional" I don't mean screaming/crying but more the idea of quickly getting down on themselves when things go wrong. This shows whenever a bit of pressure is applied. Making Rashid Khan captain is risky considering his personality on the field.

A team like that needs someone similar to Misbah.

Aftab Alam was sent back home as he misbehaved with a female guest in their hotel, I seriously don’t know what’s wrong with some of these Afghan players. Rashid Khan doesn’t look captain material, he will destroy Afghan cricket more. He is no longer even their best spinner, it’s Mujeeb. I wonder why he performed so poorly ?

Best suitable captain for Afghanistan has always been Nabi and Afghanistan performed well under him.

Young choice as skipper.....allegedly.

Afghan cricket = chaos.

That's what I thought. He is too hot headed to be a captain.

Not a bad decision from AFG cricket board. Gulbadin was a horrible captain. He cost them the game against Pakistan.

I personally think Nabi would be their best captain. Rashid doesn't look like he will be a great captain. Let's see what happens.

If that's true then he should be in jail, guess they're to keep it hush hush to save face.

What is point of making Asghar Afghan vice captain? He should have been the captain.

Its like PCB makes Babar Azam captain and Sarfaraz vice captain post WC.

Better than the last muscle flexing kaptaan. But Rashid Khan seems to be a few seasons wonder, and a bit overrated for ODIs at present.IMHO.

Good decision! Why not pick a captain who is only 20 and has the super power of not aging. ACB is proving to be better than Pakistan and Westindies!

It appears to be true and whats funny, there is more to it. You can Google him dropping by in India vs Pakistan match with his friends.

lool the guy is so entitled, he legit just showed up to the game with his friends without tickets and forced themselves into the corporate boxes :)) He might've gotten away with that it in Kabul but not England.

We all saw Rashid’s captaincy during WC qualifiers. Afghan is the best leader they have though not a long term option.

Just waiting to see Rashid's reaction when some of his players say this to him: "Neither do I play for Rashid Khan nor for the cricket board (ACB) but for Afghanistan"

One of worst personality player honored to represent a country. The guy is too arrogant and think too highly of himself. He will be another Afghan cricket board CEO like character and will be a laughing stock to other teams by making stupid remarks.
Once upon a time cricket used to be Gentlemens' game.

He's an excellent player but does he have any leadership abilities.

I recall Afghanistan lost a run of games in the World Cup qualifiers when he was temporary captain.

He's either the youngest or oldest captain Afghanistan have ever had.

Leg-spinner Rashid Khan has revealed that he’s benefitted from Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan’s advice of not making too many changes to his bowling and keeping a calm mindset during pressure situations. Hence, the No-1 ranked T20I bowler in the world and Afghanistan’s all-formats captain, Rashid, has stuck to what the all-time greats had to say and readied himself for the ups and downs.

“I asked Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne, superstars of Test cricket, what should my mindset be in a Test match. They both told me that I shouldn’t change myself, and be cool and calm in every situation. [They said that I should] just focus on bowling in the right line and length, rather than bring down my speed. They said that the quicker you bowl, it deceives the batsmen,” Rashid said.

“I never brought any difference in my bowling in any format. I try to do what I am capable of,” he said. “I don’t want to bring any changes to my bowling. If I bring a bit of change, I think it will affect my bowling.

“I always had one thing in mind in the Test match, that there will be a time when I won’t get a wicket for 25 overs. There will be a time when I get three wickets in one over. Rather than putting extra pressure on myself, I should be mentally ready for this sort of thing.”

Rashid spoke to the media after the tri-series final between Afghanistan and Bangladesh was washed out and the trophy was shared. The 20-year-old captain however, did bring to everyone’s attention that it’s about time Afghanistan were exposed to a tougher, more fierce competition. Prior to the T20I tri-series which featured Zimbabwe as the third side, Afghanistan played a one-ff Test against Bangladesh, which as per Rashid, is not enough.

“We should have longer series against Bangladesh, like have the main focus on 50 overs and Test matches,” Rashid said. “Cricket boards should think about it. There should be a three-match Test series. There’s more room to learn and have different experiences. More 50 overs and Tests would be better for both nations.”

Rashid also stressed on the need to play series against stronger teams such as Australia and England. Afghanistan have a two Test and three ODI series lined up against Australia over the next three years and an ODI bilateral series against New Zealand sometime before the 2023 50-over World Cup. Rashid said that if Afghanistan are to continue their upward growth, the need to play more games against the top-cricket playing nations.

“We have played only twice against Australia, New Zealand and England in the last five years [all in World Cups]. If we played more against them, we could have known their strengths and weaknesses. It should be looked into,” Rashid added. “The best example is Bangladesh. They played a lot against South Africa and ended up having the best result against them in the World Cup. If we want to be a good side, we should play more against the top sides. Not one match in four years. These teams have four fast bowlers who bowl 140-plus. We play against Scotland and Ireland, and they hardly have a 140-plus bowler.”

As for missing the World Test Championship, Rashid is keen for Afghanistan to put up good performances in the longer format and hope that someday they will be part of the tournament.

“We are quite sad not to be part of the World Test Championship, but I think all we can do right now is play good Test cricket, to prove that decision wrong. But at the same time, you can’t put a side in the championship who have played only three Tests,” he said.

Asghar Afghan, who was removed as Afghanistan captain ahead of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019, is back as the team's skipper across formats.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board on Wednesday, 11 December, said in a short statement on social media, "As per the decision by ACB top management, senior player Asghar Afghan is reappointed as team Afghanistan's captain across formats."

This is the latest in a series of leadership changes in the team, with Afghan taking over from Rashid Khan this time.

Despite leading the side to their first Test win, against Ireland, Afghan had been removed as captain less than two months before the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019. The board had in April decided to go with split captaincy, putting Rahmat Shah in charge of Tests, while naming Gulbadin Naib for ODIs and Rashid for T20Is.

The move had prompted criticism from within the team, with Rashid and senior member Mohammad Nabi among those vocal in their support of Afghan, and bemoaning the instability just before the 50-over tournament in England.

As it happened, Afghanistan struggled on the big stage, finishing last and without a win. The results prompted the board to re-evaluate the split captaincy system, after which 20-year-old Rashid was handed the reins of all formats. As part of that announcement in July, Afghan was named his deputy.

Rashid has enjoyed some success as skipper, leading the team to a memorable Test win against Bangladesh, and sealing T20I series victory against West Indies. However, his personal form has been up and down.

Afghan, who was first named as captain in 2015, has led in 104 international matches across formats, winning 69 of them.
