STEVE Smith insists he won’t be deciding Australia’s Ashes selection conundrums, rubbishing the notion as “absolute garbage”.

Smith has recently come under fire for making so-called captain’s calls regarding his XI.

Critics suggest the fresh-faced skipper wields too much influence, pointing to Nic Maddinson’s Test debut last year plus NSW’s recent decision to play Daniel Hughes ahead of Ed Cowan.

“All this rubbish about me picking my mates is absolute garbage. I certainly don’t agree with that,” Smith told reporters in Sydney on Friday.

“People can say what they like. I’ll read it. It doesn’t bother me and I just get on with it.

“I’m not a selector but I certainly speak to the selectors a lot and express my views.”

Trevor Hohns’ selection panel has made it clear they face two difficult dilemmas ahead of the five-Test series against England that starts in Brisbane on November 23.

Wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, whose combative approach and tactical nous is highly rated by Smith, is under immense pressure to retain his spot because of a lack of runs.
The No. 6 spot in the batting order also remains up for grabs, with Smith noting “nobody really stood up” in the day-night Sheffield Shield opener.

There is also rising speculation regarding opener Matthew Renshaw’s place in the team.

“I’m not sure ... hopefully he spends some good time in the middle and gets himself a big score,” Smith said, when asked if Renshaw was under pressure.

The Shield round that starts on Saturday will be players’ last chance to impress before selectors meet to pencil in their XI for the Gabba.

In September Aussie cricket great Rodney Hogg slammed Smith for “picking his mates”.

“They’re picking their mates,” Hogg said of Australia’s chaotic selection mess on SEN’s The Run Home. “Smith shouldn’t be a selector.

“(Ashton) Agar’s been pushed through and Cartwright’s still there. We saw (Nic) Maddinson get selected (he’s) a mate, he’s one of Steve Smith’s mates. You can’t pick bloody mates!

“We’ve got to get fair dinkum. We’re really off the ball a bit here ... I think the captain’s getting his own way.”

Hogg said a serious review of Australia’s selection panel and their decision making process was needed if the Aussies are to improve on their horror form slump.

“All the way down, there’s got to be question marks,” he said. “All the way across Cricket Australia.”

Surprise surprise Victorians whinging about selection.

Cartwright has the second highest first class average in Australian cricket yet that drongo Hogg thinks he is getting picked based on being mates with a guy he probably barely even met before he made his international debut.

Victoria haven't produced a test standard batsman in a long, long while. All these calls for Maxwell being in the side are ridiculous.

I'd argue Handscomb is/will be test standard but got to laugh at the idea that guys like Maxwell, Finch and White are superstars denied by biased selectors.

Smith dropped Cowan for a 29 year old with so so few games. Disgraceful, and the NSW bias is obvious. Finch, Maxwell deserve to be in the team, two of the best test players of the last decade kept out by the selectors

Finch just plonks his foot down in the same spot for every ball- can't do that on test pitches.

I'm not sure I've ever seen Maxwell score runs, I assume he must be a star in the IPL but his continuing presence near Australian teams is very confusing.

Not quite sure why Ashton Agar gets such a free ride though. He's rubbish. Pick a leggie if you want it to spin away.

That's an example of someone who only watches NSW. Finch's technique is top class in FC games, he does not play like that.

And what about Cowan?

Finch's first class average is 36. Nuff said. And before you point to last year- he scored a single ton.

What about Cowan? He's still good enough to be making shield runs I agree.

Daniel Hughes deserved to get selected. The player with a dubious selection in that match was Maddinson.

But when you're 35 and at your peak you were a tried and tested mediocre test cricketer you're out of luck when your Sheffield Shield team basically fields the test team.

This is the team that NSW is fielding

1. Warner
2. Maddinson
3. Smith*
4. Patterson
5. Hughes
6. Henriques
7. Nevill+
8. Starc
9. Cummins
10. Hazlewood
11. Lyon

Its tough but if he wanted to be guaranteed selection every week Cowan should have stayed at Tassie.

I read Cowan was (one of?) the highest run scorer in your fc comp last season, so don't understand how it was possible to drop him really!

Cowan was the top scorer last year in FC. It was strange that he was dropped. I can understand when people are dropped from International cricket after a certain age but that should not happen in FC. Players should play in FC till they are good enough..Not sure what the idea was. You cannot deny a player in top form from playing cricket and 35 isn't very old either. International cricketers play longer than that.

The justification given was the return of test players Warner & Smith to the top order and the desire to examine young players.

I completely agree that on performance Cowan should play for NSW, even if he'll never play for Oz again- it is decisions like this that have seen the Shield grow weaker under Sutherland and performance manager Pat Howard over the last 5 years.

The Shield focus has shifted from "win at all costs" ruthless mentality to, "Talent ID practice games with 2 chances for the kiddies".
