Ashes 2025/26: Australia vs England | 4th Test | Melbourne | December 26-30 | Match Discussion

Flat pitch - England lost
Bouncy pitch - England lost
Pink ball pitch - England lost
Green mamba - ????

What is the kind of pitch England likes so that Australia can design pitches suiting their wish. Aussies are relentless mocking the arrogant pre-series speech now.

Australia, and the Southern Hemisphere in general, has become a very tough place to bat in recent times.

Top 3 venues for seam movement are all in Australia
I remember last year when Ind toured, people were expecting SCG to be flat which usually is true but it turned out to be the most difficult pitch of the entire tour.

I think they are deliberately preparing these pitches as they know that Bazballers are amazing on Flat beds.

This Ashes is a perfect example of how all teams prepare(or tamper) their home pitches for victory.

The likes of MCG and SCG used to be flat tracks with true bounce but seeing how Bazballers play on flat pitches they modified their pitches.

Let us put this way. SCG never behaved like this ever in my memory. Even in 1999 tour which was supposedly slightly spicier Laxman made 167 in 200 balls or so. He butchered 150k Brett Lee for 52 runs in 5 overs.

Steve smith is totally done. He is trying to dance his way into form. This is not exactly a great series. Nothing to do with quality of bowling. He is almost at the end of the rope. HE may score again. But Aussies can see his end is near.

OFF TOPIC:
IF Temu is so awful, I wonder what would be the quality of an Indian version?

BACK to the topic:
Grass is not always the only factor in this test and NEVER it always is. The fans just do not have any sense of how atmosphere plays the role. OR, they just IGNORE it to ASSERT a point. I am not gonna go in detail when all the info about it is there on everyone's fingertip. Was it overcast conditions that resulted the fall of 20 wickets or just the presence of grass ONLY - or BOTH?

It is the exact reason one can't compare 2 batsmen in my opinion unless they are playing together at the same time - they always play under different conditions which effects the batting (or bowling which is a different matter). But hey, as long as statistics is creating a drama, we tend to enjoy this sensation.

Was bright & sunny after lunch btw ...

Boland's reception today more or less equaled the top biggest roaring moments at the G

* Warne's 700th wicket (2006)
* Mitchell Johnsons 2013 dominating spell and sledging
* Dennis Lille's spell against Richards in 1981

Those are the moments that had highest crowd involvement.

England are so poor that they can't even chase 150 runs target here, although Bazball madness brags about chasing 400

My favorite moment of the day yesterday was when Scott Boland hit a boundary on the last ball of the day to a roaring response from the nearly 95K fans in attendance.

It would be something if he manages to hang around and play one of those scratchy/annoying nightwatchman innings where the edges are constantly going for runs. He will be getting plenty of help from the crowd, that's for sure.

Very tough to see England playing so bad in this Ashes. They have a very good team. But does not perform. Aus are an average team, but perform way above what their talent suggests.

Pathetic bowling from England. A 130k trundler should never open bowling in Aus. Players like Head usually eat such pie checkers for breakfast, lunch and dinner any day.

Aussies are 98-6 at lunch. Looks like England have brought themselves back into the game. It's a tough pitch though and don't know if they've got the right batting mentality to win.

Aussies are effectively at 140/6.

I think they have enough runs on the board. It is a very low-scoring pitch.

Anyway, they would probably want to set a target of 200 or more (just to be safe).

No matter who wins here, one thing is for sure - the pitches used in this series have been pathetic.

Australia has enough demand to sell out all 5 days of the match and make a heck of a lot of money in the process, and yet they are producing pitches with 10cm of grass with the ball deviating all over the place. I’m sorry but this isn’t good enough. 20 wicket days are farcical and whoever is responsible for such horror pitches should be sacked.

Very poor pitch here.

Hope Eng wins at least this test. Lottery pitch was the best hope and it's a small target relatively. Pitch is poor so it got to be one player going big.

Series is dead and it's a lottery pitch but Eng won't get a better chance to win finally a test in Aus.

First 20 overs will be the best time to bat due to heavy roller.

He is a trundler. Even Jhye Richardson was bowling in early 130's.

Only Starc is hitting 140's. Boland is mid 130's. But the dude is a machine and has height to take advantage of.
Richardson used to bowl 140+ dont know why he is so much down on pace

Australian cricket yesterday recorded its highest ever attendance for a single day.

A total of 162,408 fans attended Day 1 of the NRMA Insurance Boxing Day Test at the MCG and the KFC BBL|15 matches at the Sydney Cricket Ground and Optus Stadium.

Yesterday’s attendance shattered the record set 12 months ago when 152,375 fans came through the gates on Boxing Day 2024.

All three matches set attendance records, showcasing the strength and popularity of Australia's national sport.

In Melbourne, a crowd of 94,199 watched 20 wickets fall in the fourth NRMA Insurance Ashes Test.

This was a record attendance for a day of cricket in Australia, surpassing the previous record of 93,013 for the ODI World Cup final in 2015.

The day’s second match saw the Melbourne Stars defeat the Sydney Sixers by seven wickets in front of 25,589 fans, the largest ever crowd at the SCG’s annual Boxing Day fixture.

The national single day attendance record was then sealed at Optus Stadium, as the Perth Scorchers welcomed 42,620 fans – their largest Boxing Day Bash crowd, eclipsing the previous record set in BBL|13 – to watch them host reigning champions Hobart Hurricanes.

The Boxing Day attendance record comes after total and single day records were set across the opening three NRMA Insurance Ashes Tests and with the Big Bash achieving major increases in attendances and broadcast audiences across Foxtel and Seven.

Todd Greenberg, Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer, said:

“Boxing Day 2025 has been a landmark day for Australian Cricket, with records tumbling across all three venues to play host to Test and BBL matches.

“To set a new single day attendance record of 162,408 is a proud moment for Australian Cricket and reflects our sport’s popularity and strength nationwide.

"The Boxing Day Test is bigger than cricket. It is one of the nation's great events and those who were at the MCG yesterday will cherish the experience forever.

“Similarly, attending Big Bash games is a summer ritual for many Australian families and the buzz around the competition is as loud as it’s ever been. We’re seeing incredible performances, record run chases and a continued a trend of nail-biting finishes every night.

“The unmissable on-field action has driven record crowds to every Test match, with all formats experiencing attendance and audience growth this summer.

“We thank all those who watched or attended a match on an incredible day for cricket and look forward to seeing packed venues around the country for the remainder of the summer.”

Australia has shot themselves with this pitch. ON a decent wicket England would have committed harakiri anyway. WHy prepare extreme pitches and lighten your batting strength.

I was surprised Australia gave Boland only 1 over during 2nd session. Maybe he will bowl more in 3rd session. Let's see.

Why is keeper standing up to pacers? :inti

I think it is a blunder because it forces bowlers to bowl slowly.

Get as many as possible in 20 overs. I think Eng has got this one now.
