Thank you. Good to see PTI not back down for once, though the country is still burning and IK is still out of the country.

What happens if she manages to get out of the country? Will the government be able to control the mobs then?

Anti-Army artificial liberal and right wing religious extremists fail to understand Pakistan and Pakistan's history.

Army of Pakistan understand and determine to make Pakistan economy better, because they understand the biggest threat to Pakistan is poor economy, which could not have been done as long as family dynastic politics was ruling Pakistan.

Before election the goal was simple and clear, get rid of these family of corrupt politician and mafia from Karachi, which was done gradually and systematically. So, Army goal was to have election and instead of creating chaos they decided to pay these small minority of mobs.

I believe this time Pakisani Army nor Government will allow the mobs to dictate, they will eventually disperse after few days.

Ideally I would want Asia bibi to remain in Pakistan but at this juncture, she should be allow to leave the country with compensation. Mobs will go out on street again but how long will they continue?

IK leaving for China was planned in advance. The so called practising Muslims are disrupting traffic with their ridiculous protests. Most of them uneducated lot don't even understand the message of the Qur'an. These people see blasphemy everywhere and are just waiting for such a thing to happen.

Thank you. Good to see PTI not back down for once, though the country is still burning and IK is still out of the country.

He is out of the country because your Noora friends bankrupted the country- he hasnt gone to London to meet his sons like the duffer used to and he didnt go to Switzerland to pick up commissions from Businessman according to WSJ.

These uneducated Jahlis are a stain on Pakistan society. This may offend a few but it needs to be told.

They will always keep Pakistan backwards as possible if they had it their way.

They only understand the language of force. That’s why complete freedom of expression doesn’t always work until you build up strong institutions and make education a top priory otherwise you create a vacuum for these extreme elements to flourish.

Then the army should be given green light to start firing on them.

If they protested peacefully no qualms but they are not doing that. It’s all about intimidation against the state - our way or the high way.

If they were so popular they would win elections but they know they can’t so hence the thuggish behaviour.

Imran should not back down an inch otherwise you only give them more incentive next time.

I mentioned in other place as well. Their leaders should be bought. They all have a price. And in the next few months they should be arrested one by one on any pretext to cut off the snake's head. And finally such powerful organisations should be brought under government itself.

Thankfully the court has decided that the charges of blasphemy were false. Imagine the scenario that the court accepted that it was true and the defendant hanged on baseless allegation by Muslim accusers.

According to Muslim logic at some point the Christian Lady would be in Hell and the Muslim accusers in Paradise.

Sad to see country being held hostage by a misguided few.

Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor on Friday advised religio-political parties protesting against the Supreme Court judgement on Asia Bibi's appeal to seek a legal solution to their grievances.

Speaking to PTVNews, the DG ISPR said that Asia Bibi was acquitted by the courts and added that the army had nothing to with her case.

"Unfortunately, the army is dragged into every matter," he said when asked about anti-military statements issued by protesters. "This is a legal matter and it is sad that negative statements are being issued against the army."

"We are tolerating a lot," he added.

Protesting and destroying public/government properties is only Halal for PTI.

Looks like IK getting a taste of his own medicine - these use to be his exact tactics during Mush era. Funny how quickly things change.

OMG the "liberal" whining on social media is 10x hilarious and pathetic than Mullahs.

Pakistani Army Zinda bad. In Sha Allah, Pakistan will come out stronger out of this mess.

Asia Bibi is a Pakistani and her well being is state's utmost responsibility.

IK knows that the main supporters of this 'fitna' are the people who want Pakistan to become Iraq/Venezuela.

Hi

Like I said previously, there's a reason me, [MENTION=131701]Mamoon[/MENTION] and [MENTION=135038]Major[/MENTION] believed it straightaway. I left the country for my Master's barely a month ago, and the other two are still there.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday set a hearing date for a review petition filed against the top court’s verdict acquitting Asia Bibi of blasphemy charges and setting her free.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and comprising Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Mazhar Alam Miankhel will decide on January 29 whether or not to allow the appeal.

Complainant Qari Muhammad Saalam had filed a review petition in the Supreme Court Lahore registry through his counsel Ghulam Mustafa Chaudhry, after the apex court acquitted Asia Bibi – a peasant Christian woman on death row since she was convicted on blasphemy charges in 2010.

The petitioner had argued that Bibi confessed to her crimes during investigation, and that a delay in lodging the First Information Request does not imply that the defendant is not guilty of the crime.

The petitioner had also sought to put her name on the Exit Control List till a final decision on the review petition was made.

On January 29, "the court will determine if our appeal against her acquittal is admitted", Ghulam Mustafa Chaudhry, the lawyer who filed the petition seeking an appeal, told AFP.

"Usually the court decides on the same day if the appeal is admitted or not," he added.

Supreme Court acquits Asia Bibi after blasphemy charges not proven

Asia Bibi's conviction was overturned by Pakistan’s highest court on October 31 in a landmark decision, but she had remained in prison as the government negotiated with protesters from religious groups — led by the Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) — who blockaded major cities and demanded her immediate execution.

On November 2, the government had agreed in a deal with the protesters to follow due process to impose a travel ban on Bibi, and not to challenge the review appeal in the Supreme Court.

The capital administration has made stringent security arrangements, including the deployment of paramilitary troops in Islamabad's sensitive areas, as the Supreme Court is set to hear a petition seeking review of its October 31, 2018 verdict of acquitting Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman who was sentenced to death in a blasphemy case.

In a letter written to the capital chief commissioner's office, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, the Islamabad district magistrate sought the deployment of Pakistan Rangers personnel in the city "to avoid any untoward incident" during the hearing of a "sensitive case" on January 29.

The magistrate suggested that the Rangers authorities be approached with the request to deploy quick response forces (QRFs) of the paramilitary force in aid of the civil administration to bolster the capital's security.

The review petition filed by Qari Muhammad Salaam pleads the apex court to maintain the capital punishment awarded by the trial court to Aasia Bibi.

Qari Salaam is a prayer leader of a mosque who lives in a village in Nankana Sahib tehsil and had lodged the FIR about the alleged blasphemy incident.

The bench which will take up the review petition will be headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and also comprise Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel.

On Oct 31 last year, a five-judge SC bench had reversed the judgements of the Lahore High Court (LHC) and the trial court thus setting aside the conviction and death sentence awarded to Aasia Bibi, who had been accused of committing blasphemy during an argument with a Muslim woman in Sheikhupura in June 2009.

TLP threatens protests
Meanwhile, the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), which had led three-day-long mass protests against Bibi's acquittal in November, rejected the SC bench formed to hear the review petition and threatened a protest movement if Bibi is given "judicial relief".

Most of the top TLP leadership, including its chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi, is presently imprisoned in the wake of a massive crackdown launched by law enforcement agencies against the religiopolitical group.

In a video message, TLP's central acting emir Shafiq Amini claimed that the government had promised them that a larger bench including Sharia court judges would be formed to hear the review petition against Bibi's acquittal. He demanded that a larger bench be formed after dissolving the current bench.

Asking TLP workers to "be prepared", Amini said, "No one should expect a compromise from our end".

The TLP had called off its protests last year after reaching an agreement with the government, the foremost condition of which was the placement of Bibi's name on the Exit Control List. The government, however, had only agreed to "initiate the legal process" to place her name on the list, while also agreeing that it would not oppose any review petitions being filed against the SC judgement.

After her release from Multan’s women prison on November 7, Aasia Bibi was flown to Islamabad onboard a special aircraft. She was then taken to an undisclosed place amid tight security. Authorities have remained tight-lipped about her movement and whereabouts for security reasons.

Be prepared for another round of protests and damages no matter what the verdict..

Why can't the trouble makers be beaten to a pulp? What authority do they have to create havoc if they don't like a certain Supreme Court verdict?

Why the hell is this still going on? Let her leave the country and restart her life in peace. Should be escorted to somewhere like Canada or Italy where there are not many Pakistanis.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday — amid tight security in the capital — dismissed a petition seeking review of the top court's October 31, 2018 verdict of acquitting Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman who spent eight years on death row in a blasphemy case.

The petitioner was not able to point out any mistake in the SC verdict acquitting Aasia Bibi, said the CJP.

After her release from Multan’s women prison on November 7 last year, Aasia Bibi was flown to Islamabad onboard a special aircraft. She was then taken to an undisclosed place amid tight security. Authorities have remained tight-lipped about her movement and whereabouts for security reasons.

As the hearing started at 1pm, petitioner Qari Muhammad Salaam's lawyer Ghulam Ikram presented his arguments before a three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and comprising Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel. The lawyer had demanded that a larger bench be made for the review petition, saying it should include Islamic scholars and ulama.

"How is this a matter of religion?" asked the CJP. "Has the verdict not been given on merit?"

"The verdict was given on the basis of testimonies; does Islam say that one should be punished even if they are found not guilty?

"Prove to us what [you believe] is wrong with the verdict," said Chief Justice Khosa.

When the lawyer pointed to the verdict mentioning "burden of proof" being on the petitioner, the judge asked: "Do you disagree with this rule?"

"The verdict did not take into account some views [of the witnesses' testimonies]," argued the lawyer. "If a testimony isn't further examined [by the lawyers], it is understood to be true."

"You should talk on the merits [of the verdict]," the top judge remarked.

"The beauty of a Muslim community is that non-muslims are taken care of," said the CJP, addressing the lawyer. "First talk about the merit and tell us where the flaw is.

"First tell us where the testimony was read incorrectly [by the court]. What Islam says about it will be discussed later.

"Islam says that a testimony should be true even if it incriminates a person's own loved ones. If we have not read the testimony correctly, we will rectify it immediately," said the chief justice.

The allegations against Aasia Bibi were made in June 2009 when she was labouring in a field and a row broke out with some Muslim women she was working with.

She was asked to fetch water, but the Muslim women objected, saying that as a non-Muslim she was unfit to touch the water bowl. A few days later the women went to a local cleric and put forward the blasphemy allegations.

Speaking on the incident that sparked the allegations, the top judge said: "You are saying that Aasia said this [alleged blasphemous words] while addressing 25 people. Was she addressing a jalsa [rally]?"

"In front of the investigation officer, the women said that no dispute had occurred between them," Chief Justice noted. "This case did not have as many honest witnesses as it should have had."

"The investigation officer says that the female witnesses changed their statements. The testimonies of the investigation officer and the witnesses are different.

"The falsa farm's owner did not appear in court to record his testimony. According to the law, if a testimony is not recorded under Section 342 of the CrPC [recording a statement by the accused], then it does not have any value.

"The farm's owner only came forward after the police started the investigation, 20 days after [it started]. His testimony holds no legal value.

"The delay of an hour is enough to create suspicion."

The lawyer maintained that the petitioners did not add Aasia [to the case] due to any dishonesty.

Reiterating what Chief Justice Khosa had asked multiple times during the hearing, Justice Isa asked: "Tell us what the flaw in the verdict is."

"We will not hear the case again," remarked the CJP. "We are hearing [the petition] for the satisfaction of those who gave fatwas [on the verdict] without reading it."

Tight security
A day earlier on Monday, the capital administration made stringent security arrangements, including the deployment of paramilitary troops in Islamabad's sensitive areas.

"Keeping in mind the evidence produced by the prosecution against the alleged blasphemy committed by the appellant, the prosecution has categorically failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt," the then chief justice Mian Saqib Nisar had written in the detailed judgment.

Editorial: A grave injustice avoided

Justice Khosa, in his note, had said: "Blasphemy is a serious offence but the insult of the appellant’s religion and religious sensibilities by the complainant party and then mixing truth with falsehood in the name of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) was also not short of being blasphemous."

Aasia Bibi's lawyer, Saiful Malook, who had received death threats and fled the country after his client's acquittal, returned to Islamabad to attend Tuesday's hearing.

The petitioners “have no case against my client, I am sure of that”, Malook told The Associated Press on Monday. He said he has asked authorities to provide him with personal security.

Well done Pakistan SC.

But why do they want to satisfy the Fatwa brigade?

"We will not hear the case again," remarked the CJP. "We are hearing [the petition] for the satisfaction of those who gave fatwas [on the verdict] without reading it."

The Brelvis(politically) were generally never known as nutty but in their desperation to get noticed their politics is on par with Fazlu etc.

Congrates!! Pakistan for giving justice to a minority, sadly, many more need it.

Pakistan government should compensate her for the loss of 8 years of her life and to make sure that no minority should experience this ever again.

What about the mullah who falsely accused her of blasphemy? The CJP today said that the imam who accused Asia Bibi of uttering inappropriate words lied in court and gave conflicting testimonies.

This rabid mullah should be sentenced to life imprisonment.

How I wish every people in Pakistan thought like the wonderful Pakistani posters in this thread. Their country would have been so much better.

Same with my country. I'm fed up of the jaahil, third class people in my country who belong in the same mold. And believe me, they outnumber such Pakistani people by a long margin.

What about the mullah who falsely accused her of blasphemy? The CJP today said that the imam who accused Asia Bibi of uttering inappropriate words lied in court and gave conflicting testimonies.

This rabid mullah should be sentenced to life imprisonment.

Agree 100%. To hold a position of religious authority and then lie in court is disgraceful. It should not be taken lightly considering the wave of violence and unrest that can be unleashed in illiterate communities by irresponsible words.

At the least try him for perjury.

It’s all well and good that she’s finally acquitted and can live freely. Hopefully she has a safe and happy life now.

However shouldn’t there be some action taken against the fact that a decade of her life was taken away from her and that her young children practically grew up as orphans? Who will account for that?

It's sweet justice that Aasia Bibi is acquitted and released while foul mouthed Khadim Hussian Rizvi is behind bars.

Allah al-haq hai

People who accused her would be burning of jealousy that she has went on to become a hero and moved to a much better country whereas they continue to live in a miserable Pakistani village

Education is the key and not blindly following anyone who has a long beard.

And both are the responsibility of the government of Pakistan.

Hopefully qualified scholars are given the mic to speak to general public.

He must be tried along with other religious leaders who wanted to inflame the situation. We want a tolerant and progressive Pakistan.

Isn’t that happening now?
Where is Shariff and what is happening to Zardari?

There are reports Canada has accepted her asylum. Expected to arrive soon.

So there was no chance she could lead a normal life in Pakistan?

Yea no chance. Similar to what many innocent Sikhs accused of treason were forced to do in 80s. There was no other way but to seek asylum despite their innocence

Imran continues to show what a weak leader he is. Atif Mian and now this - he has no spine and cannot withstand any pressure or opposition.

There is no conviction in his policies (or words) and he bolts under the first sight of pressure.

You were very quick to talk then but I can't hear anything. IK has not only nailed Rizvi, he has restored the writ of the state without violence. This is his biggest achievement.

Why is she still being treated like a criminal?

Pakistani authorities have moved Asia Bibi, a Christian woman recently acquitted of blasphemy charges, to a new “secure area” and are barring her from leaving the country, a close friend and rights campaigner has claimed.

Bibi, who spent eight years on death row, was transferred from a location near the capital to a house in the southern port city of Karachi, her friend Aman Ullah told the Associated Press. She and her husband are locked in a single room in a house where the door opens only “at food times”, he added.

Canada has offered her asylum and she wants to join her daughters there. Pakistani authorities have said she is free to travel, but Bibi, 54, says she is being prevented from going.

Sending her to Canada doesn’t guarantee safety and freedom imo. That country has enough crazies

Hopefully, a western country takes her. The state has already snatched 8 years of her life. Who will give back her 8 years?

And, why has that Mullah who wrongfully accused her blasphemy let off scot-free.

Why cant we give her protection?

This is a big failure.

I doubt she wants protection. She wants to live in abroad so even if she is safe, she will say she doesn't feel safe. It's best she does leaves if it helps here to feel safe and for Pakistan to move on.

Pakistan is not safe. If you can live abroad, why not an innocent Christian woman who is the number one enemy of Pakistanis.

Mumtaz Qadri was paraded as a hero for what he did.

You think she would be safe in Pakistan? Maybe after a few years, but not right now.

By a few people. Most in Pakistan see him as nothing more than a murderer but you know this.

It doesn't matter what I feel, it's how she feels. If she wants to leave and can do so ,I hope she makes a good life in another country. People seek asylum from many nations around the world inc thousands from USA to other nations.
