When Yarmolenko got that equaliser my heart dropped ...but thankfully all had ended well and we will spend another year in the Prem...

We were so much better post lockdown as a team and also Smith really stepped up ...rather than stubbornly sticking to his 4-3-3 he played his opponents ...excellent in game changes ...it’s easy to forget sometimes that he is also developing ...

This has been a busy week so far but mainly with back room staff...

A new director of football Johan Lange from Copenhagen ...who did an excellent job there developing a team philosophy and known for buying low and selling big on players ...

A new assistant coach Craig Shakespeare ...and JT is staying ...Shakespeare is a Villa fan and worked under both Pearson and Ranieri...he’s helped win a Premier League and played with Smith at Walsall ...

A new head of recruitment Rob Mackenzie ...who is one of the original data guys...found Mahrez, Alderweireld and Son among others ...

Really developing a solid backroom team ...

End of Season Ratings

GK
Heaton 7.5
An excellent signing...some brilliant saves...kept us in a lot of games...wish his distribution was better but overall can’t wait for him to be back in the team...

Nyland 4
Looked terrible in the league...always looked capable of errors and got lucky with Hawkeye ...reason his score isn’t lower is cos he was outstanding in the league cup ...a good shot stopper but every other part of his game is suspect...

Reina 6
Made a few high profile errors which led to him losing his place but his role in us staying up can’t be overstated ...brought an assurance to our backline ...felt so much safer with him in goal...a quality loan signing...

LB
Targett 6
Defensively he’s suspect...far too often he doesn’t close crosses...but his passing has been excellent and he’s worked well with Jack going forward ...and delivered some lovely crosses...only behind Alexander-Arnold and Robertson for chances created by full backs this season ...

Taylor 4
He’s been what he is...awful going forward and an average sometimes below average defender...looked decent post lockdown Liverpool aside but needs to be replaced in the summer...

RB
Guilbert 6
Like Targett a bit suspect defensively...erratic...liked his passion, bombing forward and slide tackles...good to have a right back who overlaps ...if he can improve his positional sense he’d be an asset...only Wan Bissaka and Pereira have made more tackles this season ...

Elmo 6
He does have a lovely cross on him ...when he leaves he will be seen as a good servant to the club ...always looks unflustered...that said has his defensive limitations...a complete lack of pace which also limits us in attack...but his contributions this season like last shouldn’t be overlooked ...

CB
Mings 5.5
A mixed season ...started well with Engels ...and finished well with Konsa ...but questionable in between ...what’s been noticeable post lockdown is his concentration has improved ...and he isn’t taking risks with the ball...hes been error prone this season but has also delivered some solid defensive displays at times...just need more consistency from him...

Konsa 6
Really like what I’ve seen from him this season ...good on the ball...can spot a pass...quick and has been solid defensively for the most part... him having a go at Mings was great as was the Watford moment...perfect replacement for Axel...

Engels 5
A weird season...he’s looked decent with Mings at times but his lack of pace kills him...invariably beaten by the ball over the top...spurs and Leicester come to mind...that said he’s good on the ball...wins his fair share of headers...a back 4 suits him better ...don’t know what the deal is with him at the moment though injury wise...

Hause 5
A beast in the air all season but on the ball he has been awful ...there was a mad stat which showed he’s been the best at winning aerial duels and recovering loose balls this season ...thing is he’s been lacking in other areas ...a defence for him is he’s often played on his less preferred side ...there are worse 4th choice centre backs around ...

CM
Drinkwater 1
A terrible loan signing in the end...He’s a smart footballer but completely lacked match fitness throughout and got exposed...Was good for 15mins each game then fell apart...

Lansbury 4
Difficult to give a rating really...Played 191 minutes all season...Highlight for him was his disallowed goal against Palace...I can barely remember anything else from him this season. Will he finally be moved on?

Hourihane 6
He’s a tough guy to score...5 assists and 3 goals isn’t a bad return...He’s got some useful qualities...Vocal on the pitch, passes the ball well...Pre-lockdown though he had far too many games where he was anonymous...Doesn’t move enough, does little defensive work...Post lockdown he certainly seems to be working harder and had an important role in keeping us up...I was set on us replacing him but he’s shown he can be a decent squad player...

Luiz 8
Just 22 and what a player he’s developing into...Pre-lockdown I was in the pro camp. Good on the ball, showed potential in the first half of the season. As someone young, in a new country with a new language who didn’t have a pre-season with us there was always going to be an adjustment period...Post lockdown his positional sense has improved, he wasn’t caught on the ball...and still retains the flair with his little flicks...He’s been such an asset defensively and was our best player post lockdown...Keeping him needs to be a priority...

Nakamba 5
I have mixed thoughts on him...He can tackle but far too often he’s having to mop up after his own mistakes on the ball...He’s looked good coming on the last few games though defensively...He does break up play well but so often this season he’s looked so poor on the ball...That said there have been games where he’s looked brilliant...Tackles, breaks up play and passed well. I think he’s worth persisting with as a squad player and hopefully will be better next season...

McGinn 5
His injury was a big blow and he hasn’t really been himself since the restart. He started the season well and then got worse as the season went along.
That said we missed him as soon as he was gone...hope he gets his fitness up ...and his shooting boots back ...

L/RAM

Jota 3
Looked excellent against Everton but abysmal ever since. Lacks the pace and physicality for this league...it’s not a positive sign where wing has been our problem area all season and Jota has barely been given a look in ...

El Ghazi 4.5
Just a frustrating player...he’s got ability...decent players miss sitters...in the case of Gabriel Jesus a few a game...Anwar has unfortunately missed quite a few for us...his lack of defensive work at times ...these have all contributed to how his season has been perceived...but he hasn’t been all bad...some decent goals and assists ...and he has delivered decent crosses this season ...a bit like he was in the Championship ...really inconsistent...a bench option but shouldn’t start for us ...

Trez 5
This was tough to score...He’s such a terrible footballer but has delivered some of the best moments of our season...His goals have been indispensable...He works very hard defensively but other than moments this season he’s looked awful...He lacks pace...His dribbles never beat a man and he doesn’t create either....He’s been heavily linked with Galatasaray. I do think that’s his level...El Ghazi overall is a better footballer.

Jack 9
What can be said that hasn’t already been said...Our best player this season. We would have been lost without him...2nd top chance creator in the league behind De Bruyne. Saved us on the final day, and throughout the season...Now we have to convince him to stay...Pushing the boat out on another winger and striker will hopefully do the trick...With more quality around the pitch those stats will improve even more.

FW

Kodjia 1
Might be a bit unfair to grade him. Looked awful in every substitute appearance he had. Some good memories though. Will always look at him fondly.

Samatta 3
Looked promising in his first few games and then went to ****...has looked awful post lockdown...doesn’t hold the ball up, can’t head a ball which was supposed to be his asset...moves badly...no positives really...

Wesley 5
I rate him more than most on here...his 5 goals aren’t looking so bad considering how little the rest of our strikers have shown...like Luiz he’s raw...and has had to play all the time rather than be blooded in ...his work off the ball was good ...won aerial duels...linked up play well at times...and like all our players was poor at times...was starting to find form when sadly he got injured ...he’s got a future here as second choice striker...

Davis 5
He’s looked a lot better than Samatta...actually holds up the ball ...has a nice turn of pace and is physical ...he just needs a goal ...that miss against Arsenal could have been costly ...

Ideal first XI next season ...

GK - Heaton
RB - Cash
LB - Targett
RCB - Konsa
LCB - Mings
DM - Luiz
CM - Jack
CM - McGinn
LW - Rashica
RW - Buendia
CF - Watkins

So signing Cash, Rashica, Buendia and Watkins for the first team ...

2nd XI

GK - Nyland
RB - Guilbert
LB - Henry
RCB - Engels
LCB - Hause
DM - Nakamba
CM - Hourihane
CM - ??
LW - El Ghazi
RW - Trez
CF - Wes

So imo 6 signings would be great...

First Team
Rashica who according to Kosovo’s top journo might well be signed up next week for £22.5m.
A right winger...someone like Buendia would be great. Could be had for around £25m.
A new right back. I like the Matty Cash links. £12m
I really like Watkins. He’ll be a good prem striker hopefully for us. £25m

Second Team
A left back to challenge Targett would be great. Someone like Rico Henry or Jamal Lewis. £10m
Another centre mid in the box to box mould. Not sure about who. £15m
Maybe a keeper depending on Heaton’s fitness.

So I can see a spend of £110m.

Also some outs are possible.
Kalinic
Nyland (if we sign another keeper)
Elmo
Taylor
Bree
Lansbury
Jota
Hogan

They would be good signings for some championship clubs. If we could make say £20-30m off all of them I’d be happy. So an £80m net spend.

Very lucky to stay up last season, especially with that ghost goal at Sheffield...

I'm a big admirer of Grealish and if Villa can hold onto him and reinforce in the summer it will be very interesting to see how they get on next season.

BREAKING: Jack Grealish called into the England squad by manager Gareth Southgate as Marcus Rashford and Harry Winks drop out

Will be interesting to see how he responds without being the best player in the ENG squad

Aston Villa: Callum Wilson and Matty Cash targeted

Aston Villa are hoping to sign Bournemouth's England striker Callum Wilson after opening talks on a deal worth about £20m.

Boss Dean Smith wants to add to Villa's attack after they stayed up on the final day of last season.

Wilson, 28, scored seven goals in 35 Premier League games as Bournemouth were relegated to the Championship.

Villa are also close to signing Nottingham Forest's English right-back Matty Cash, 23, for about £16m.

Cash was one of the standout performers in a Forest side that narrowly missed out on the Championship play-offs last season.

The academy graduate has made 141 appearances for the club since making his debut in 2016.

Bournemouth have already sold prime assets, such as defender Nathan Ake to Manchester City and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to Sheffield United, since their relegation to the second tier.

Wilson has won four England caps, the last of which came in the 6-0 win against Bulgaria in Sofia in October 2019, and has scored one goal.

He has also been linked with Newcastle, West Ham and Tottenham but Villa, who have also been touted as a potential destination for Brentford's Ollie Watkins, are ready to make a firm move.

Dean Smith and co will be hopeful of avoiding a relegation scrap this time around but reinforcements are required

Guardian writers’ predicted position: 15th (NB: this is not necessarily Paul Doyle’s prediction but the average of our writers’ tips)

Last season’s position: 17th

On 2 May 1981 a former Trappist monk hijacked a plane over Heathrow and threatened to blow it up unless the Pope revealed the third secret of Fatima. Down below, in Highbury, Aston Villa lost to Arsenal but were crowned champions of England because Middlesbrough beat Ipswich. This is planet Earth.

Villa lifted the European Cup the following year but they have yet to regain the title and – here comes the bold prediction – they’re not going to win it this season. But with two billionaire owners intent on restoring past glories, they plan to get much closer than last term, or at least avoid another near-relegation experience.

“If we remain in the league then we have certainly got the power to compete with some of the other big clubs,” said Dean Smith during last season’s great escape. But his squad has yet to change despite his wish to recruit early. Villa’s fate will hinge on what happens ibefore the closure of the transfer window and how quickly arrivals adapt.

Behind the scenes they have been busy. They have a new sporting director, luring Johan Lange from FC Copenhagen to replace Jesús García Pitarch, who carried the can for last season’s struggles. Smith also got an extra, experienced assistant manager in Craig Shakespeare, the former Leicester manager (and a boyhood Villa fan who attended the above-mentioned match at Highbury). But no new players yet.

The spine of the side needs to be reinforced. A new goalkeeper is a priority, with Tom Heaton not scheduled to return from knee ligament damage until October at the earliest. Ørjan Nyland did well in last season’s Carabao Cup but the fact he lost his place for the run-in to Pepe Reina, whose loan has expired, suggests Smith is not convinced the Norwegian is solid enough to be No 1. After all the hard work Villa did to mend their defence, they need a keeper they can totally trust.

They also need a reliable goalscorer. Last year’s major recruit, Wesley, was starting to look sharp just before he, too, suffered a knee ligament injury. Nobody knows how soon he will get back to his best nor whether his best will be good enough. Ali Samatta, rushed in to replace Wesley, started brightly but lost his way, serving neither as a fulcrum nor a finisher. Keinan Davis showed he could hold up the ball well but putting it in the net is a skill he has yet to master. Indiana Vassilev makes cute runs but, at 19, is not ready to carry an attack.

Villa also need speed. A shortage of it restricted Smith’s options last season. When the team defended deep, they were not fast enough to strike regularly on the counterattack. If they poured forward, they left themselves vulnerable to counters and their own panicking. The formula that worked best, and went a long way towards helping them survive, was to keep compact and make maximum use of set pieces.

Which brings us to the qualities Villa do have. They have class in central midfield thanks to the fit-again John McGinn and, in particular, the artful Douglas Luiz, who, after a slow start last season, developed into an instigator of attacks and vigilant protector of defence.

Villa’s defensive improvement also owed much to the strides made by Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa, with the latter growing into a dependable partner for the England man, leaving Bjorn Engels with plenty to prove to get back into the side.

Villa’s full-backs are useful but it would be no surprise if Smith invested in upgrades to tighten up the left and improve the supply to forwards from the right, especially as the right-sided wingers offered little consistency, although by the end Trézéguet suggested he was closer than Anwar El Ghazi to being a Premier League force.

Other than Conor Hourihane’s set pieces, the chief supplier to Villa’s forward line last season was, as ever, Jack Grealish, even though he was uncharacteristically patchy after lockdown. If he stays he will again be instrumental in most of their attacks. If he gets a move to a Champions League-chasing club then Villa will have to buy even more players and take the opportunity to develop them into a team whose attack is less reliant on one wandering marvel.

The manager
On the touchline: Every boyhood Villa fan dreams of running the team from the dugout but Smith still reckons the view is better from the stands, which is why he took advantage of the absence of crowds to watch home games from just behind the dugout. He also altered his dress code, preferring leisurewear to the black suit and white shirt combo he wore before lockdown.

On Zoom: Even when deep in the relegation swamp and with some fans calling for his head, Smith remained affable and lucid, losing neither his cool nor his belief that his team would survive.

The key
Douglas Luiz arrived just before the start of last season and took time to get to grips with the Premier League but once he did so he ran Villa’s midfield and was critical to their survival. He protected the defence and instigated attacks, helping to provide a platform on which others, including Grealish, could flourish.

The owners
Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris, both billionaires, teamed up to buy Villa in 2018, having previously collaborated in the purchase of a professional video gaming team, FlyQuest. Edens also co-owns the Millwaukee Bucks NBA team while Sawiris’s other businesses include the world’s biggest supplier of nitrogen fertiliser. Smith is understood to prefer a prolific striker.

Young blood
Vassilev joined Villa after impressing at the 2017 World Cup and finally made his Premier League breakthrough with four appearances off the bench. A versatile forward who can play wide or centrally, he has been praised by Smith for the intelligence of his runs and was rewarded with a new contract in May.

New blood
No signings yet.

Kit story
Villa changed colours regularly in their infancy – sadly the chocolate and baby blue stripes introduced in 1886 did not stick – but settled on claret and blue for the maiden football league season in 1888 and those have been their colours since.

Notes from an empty stadium
“All aboard! Hahahahahaha!” There you have the opening words to Ozzy Osbourne’s Crazy Train, which is still blared around Villa Park before kick-off even with no one in attendance, which, come to think of it, is probably only right. That’s about it as far as atmosphere goes, apart from the banners displayed from fan groups, from Dubai to Perry Barr.

Euros vision
When Heaton suffered a serious knee injury on New Year’s Day that looked to be the end of his hopes of appearing at a major tournament. But the postponement of Euro 2020 gave the goalkeeper extra time to recover and, if he gets back to his best with Villa, he can aspire to playing for England next summer at the age of 35.

Ollie Watkins: Aston Villa agree fee for Brentford striker

Aston Villa are closing in on a club-record deal for Brentford striker Ollie Watkins after agreeing a fee of £28m which could rise to £33m with add-ons.

Villa moved swiftly for the 24-year-old forward after failing in a bid to sign Callum Wilson from Bournemouth.

The England striker preferred to make a £20m move to Newcastle United.

Watkins was a key player for The Bees last season, scoring 26 goals as they missed out on promotion against Fulham in the Championship play-off final.

Villa manager Dean Smith has been determined to improve his striking options after his side only secured Premier League safety on the final day of last season.

Watkins will be reunited with Smith, who signed the forward when he was Brentford manager, paying an undisclosed fee to Exeter City in July 2017.

Smith's side scored 41 top-flight goals last season, but only six came from forwards - including five from Brazilian striker Wesley.

Aston Villa have completed the signing of striker Ollie Watkins from Brentford for a club record fee of £28m, which could rise to £33m with add-ons.

Watkins was the Championship's joint-top scorer last season with 26 goals.

The 24-year-old is Villa's second signing of the transfer window following the £16m arrival of defender Matty Cash from Nottingham Forest.

"Ollie has developed into one of the most sought-after strikers in the country," said Villa boss Dean Smith.

"We are looking forward to seeing him show his great qualities in an Aston Villa shirt.

"He is a hugely determined character who has both the ability and personality to succeed at the highest level."

Watkins will be reunited with Smith, who signed the forward from Exeter when he was Brentford manager.

The fee for him is a record for a Championship player. Although Manchester City paid Bournemouth £40m for Nathan Ake last month and Tottenham spent £30m on Newcastle's Moussa Sissoko in August 2016, neither had played in the Championship before moving back to the Premier League.

"I am so excited to join Aston Villa and to reunite with Dean Smith as my head coach," said Watkins.

"I want to do something special here and score some goals."

Smith had been determined to improve his striking options after his side only secured Premier League safety on the final day of last season.

The club missed out on signing Callum Wilson from Bournemouth this week as the England striker moved to Newcastle for £20m.

Villa's previous record signing, Brazilian striker Wesley, scored five goals in 21 games in the league after his £22m moved to Villa last summer before suffering a serious knee ligament injury in January. He is still regaining his fitness.

Villa ended the season with Mbwana Samatta and Keinan Davis as their main options up front. Samatta only scored twice after joining in January, including a goal at Wembley as Villa lost the Carabao Cup final 2-1 to Manchester City. Davis has never scored a Premier League goal.

Smith's side scored 41 top-flight goals last season, but only six came from forwards - including five from Wesley.

Aston Villa have agreed a £17m deal with Lyon to sign former Chelsea forward Bertrand Traore.

Emiliano Martinez: Aston Villa sign Arsenal goalkeeper for £17m

Aston Villa have signed goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from fellow Premier League side Arsenal for £17m.

The 28-year-old Argentine, who made 23 appearances last season and played in the Gunners' FA Cup final win over Chelsea, has signed a four-year deal.

Villa manager Dean Smith said Martinez will be a "key player for our club for the long term".

"It is rare to be able to buy a top-class goalkeeper who hasn't yet reached their peak age," he added.

"We know how highly Arsenal rated him and we watched his outstanding performances last season in a trophy-winning, top side."

Martinez leaves Arsenal 10 years after joining as a youth team player in 2010.

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta decided Bernd Leno would be his first choice this season and the German started Arsenal's Premier League opener on Saturday - a 3-0 victory at Fulham.

He is Villa's third recruit of the summer after striker Ollie Watkins signed from Brentford for a club record fee and right-back Matty Cash arrived from Nottingham Forest.

Aston Villa is delighted to announce the signing of Bertrand Traore from Lyon for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance.

The 25-year-old Burkina Faso international has a strong pedigree with top-level playing experience at Ajax and Chelsea before his move to Lyon three seasons ago, where he has played over 100 games competing for the Ligue 1 title and in the Champions League.

Dean Smith said: “We’re delighted that Bertrand has chosen to come to Villa. He’s a player with immense talent who will really enhance our attacking options.”

Should have broken the bank to get the 2 Bournemouth strikers and they along with Grealish would ensured enough goals. They are short of another decent centre half, Mings is awful but he is the best they have.

The Bournemouth fella is very physical and his main strength being scoring during set pieces, we have similar players but the biggest hole has been the ability to score / take our chances in open play, this is why I feel they went for Watkins at a record fee; the players I imagine had an input to and preferred him which forced us to withdraw the bid for Wilson

Those 2 would have given Villa 30 goals, enough to keep them up.

Villa have the money but dont spend properly, buying avg players.

Another relegation battle imo.

First game of the season for Villa tonight, let's see how they shape up for the season.

As an Arsenal fan I can say Martinez is a fantastic GK and will save them a lot of points, but the overall defensive unit was a very poor one last season, and they were too reliant on Grealish. However, the signing of Ollie Watkins from Brentford could prove to be a fantastic one for them, if he hits the ground running this season he'll take them away from a relegation battle.

Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings has signed a contract extension keeping him at the club until 2024.

Good start to the season for Villa.

1 - 0 versus Sheff Utd.

Looking at all our signings he is the only one who I felt without hesitation would do well for us and in his first game shows his class lol hopefully can continue for the rest of the season

Aston Villa are interested in Chelsea duo Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, but Premier League rules mean they can only pursue a loan deal for one of them.

Great start by the Villians! Looking very solid and full of energy.

Oh up next at home the champions are arriving :klopp

7.15pm Villa v LFC

Can Villa secure a draw or a shock win? Last season Villa played very well, only for Mane to score a vital winning goal.

WTH is this Ollie Watkins? :))

Hat-trick in the first half against the champions!

Dude's having a party.

Aston Villa believe 25-year-old England midfielder Jack Grealish, who has been linked with Manchester City, is worth at least £100m. (Telegraph)

SMITH: CORONAVIRUS RULES ‘CONFUSING’

Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith says the Government's coronavirus rules are confusing following a breach in protocols by Jack Grealish and Ross Barkley.

Barkley, who is on loan from Chelsea, celebrated his 27th birthday with a meal attended by the Villa captain Grealish at a restaurant in Mayfair at the weekend.

With London in Tier 2, the team-mates breached rules preventing individuals from separate households who are not in a support bubble from meeting in 'any indoor setting, whether at home or in a public space'.

England footballer Jack Grealish has been banned from driving for nine months and fined £82,499 after crashing his Range Rover during March’s COVID-19 lockdown.

The 25-year-old Aston Villa captain was sentenced at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, after previously admitting two counts of careless driving.

So post-Brexit with limitations on freedom of movement has also led to major changes in signing players ...

A few observations which explain our aggressive academy recruitment in the summer ...Prem clubs can no longer sign non-British U18 players ...

Some sides are getting around this by using links with overseas clubs...so Man City for example have Girona where the owners own shares...so could park 16 year olds there until they turn 18...that said even when these players are 18 they still might not be awarded permits based on the points system which I’ll come to...so likelihood is EFL clubs will have their academies raided that bit more from now on...

There are in addition extra limits placed on academy signings ...Prem clubs will only be able to sign a maximum of six U21 players a season irregardless of nationality...so that’s a maximum 3 per window...

The FA did want to increase the homegrown number from 8 to 12 but that was shot down...

The points based system for transfers in general has changed somewhat...the requirement is to attain 15 points...

Any regular International from a side in the top 50 will be able to be signed without any issue...with varying standards depending on where the nation is ranked...eg 30% of games for a top 10 nation, 70% for a top 50...

If that threshold isn’t met then it comes down to other criteria...the main one of which is the League you play in...

Players who play in Ligue 1, La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga will be fine provided they play regularly...so playing 90% of domestic minutes in Serie A will get you a permit...

This is why for instance no Prem club can sign Hulk who said he wanted to move to a Prem club...not a current international nor is he playing in a top league...

Performances of the selling side also impact how points are accrued...

So signing a non-International from say Austria, Belgium or Denmark will be a lot more difficult than before...and in many cases just not possible...they won’t have international points, league points nor UEFA competition points...it limits the pool...

So one example that comes to mind is say Dani Olmo, Spanish, non-International who Leipzig signed from Dinamo Zagreb...Prem clubs wouldn’t be able to complete that deal ...

A Brazilian with an Italian passport can’t be signed anymore unless they are Internationals...so no signings like Martinelli for instance...

And say if you do have a link with a club like Girona where you want to camp your 16 year olds...they would need to become regulars for the club or become internationals...it’s a lot harder than before...you can’t say have a Belgian feeder club and then just sign the player...he won’t accrue enough points...

I can certainly think of clubs that will be disadvantaged by this ...Wolves for instance come to mind...Podence, Neto wouldn’t have met the threshold for example...

Our academy is largely British so I imagine we will continue down that road...maybe Scotland will get raided more and we will also see more signings like Chrisene from EFL clubs...

I can also see these new criteria hitting us less hard than other clubs who are focused on recruitment abroad ...especially non-Internationals abroad...

This will certainly make for an annoying patch on FM21 as most wonderkids will be off limits ...

We’re nearly a third of the way through the season and we have the makings of a very good side...we have the youngest first XI in the league too...i was having a think about next summer and obviously it’s early days but I don’t think it will be that busy a summer for us ...these are early observations...obviously these views could very different come the summer...

GK - Martinez has been a fantastic signing...quickly becoming my favourite keeper since Bosnich...I genuinely feel we may have solved what has been a problem position for years...
I think we’ll move Heaton on...he didn’t come here to be a no2...and maybe we will finally find a buyer for Kalinic...Sinisalo is having a good loan...and Steer is an able no2...
INS - None
OUTS - Heaton, Kalinic

LB - Targett has been much improved this season...that said its noticeable that he isn’t one of the players mentioned in terms of a bumper new contract...what’s important in any window is not simply to focus on depth but on improving the first XI...wouldn’t surprise me if we try and upgrade here ...let Taylor go and leave Targett to fight a new signing for a starting place ...
INS - New first team player
OUTS - Taylor

RB - Cash has been a quality signing...I think most will agree Fred will be let go...will be interesting though to see if Elmo is?...will he get an extension?...a lot I reckon depends on just how highly the club rate Kesler who played with the first team in friendlies and trained with them...
INS - Kesler
OUTS - Elmo, Guilbert

CB - I think we will sign a centre back...a young one in the Fofana mould ...who is young enough to not be annoyed about not starting ...but good enough to get in ...Mings and Konsa are an excellent partnership and for all the criticism aimed at Mings he is still part of a defence that has had six clean sheets this season...I hope there is truth to the Simakan links ...Hause has looked solid as a backup choice...we’ll let Engels go...it seems Hause is ahead in the pecking order...
INS - Prospect
OUTS - Engels

DM - Who knows if we keep him...Dean is speaking about him having a big future at the club...so for now I’m going to go with we keep Doug...as for whether we need depth it’s difficult to judge ...Nakamba has only played the one game and looked good ...would be ideal if we didn’t have to strengthen here ...

CM - McGinn blows hot and cold...wouldn’t mind us going for Anguissa if Fulham went down ...an excellent ball winner and really good at progressing Brighton’s attacks when in transition ...he’d be ideal ...Ramsey and Carney around too and depth looks decent...
INS - Competition for McGinn
OUTS - Hourihane, Lansbury

CAM - I think we’ll sign Barkley ...and have Jack available as an option...that said I’d love for us to go for Lookman who’s looked good at both 10 and on the wing...or we could do worse than sign a prospect like Olise...or maybe Ramsey pushes on...I’d love an academy product to excel...
INS - Barkley

W - A lot depends on how Traore progresses ...we’re not going to have a right wing as good as our left but it would be nice to have one that is competent ...Trez has shown quality at times ...Traore is looking much improved...and Anwar although some might disagree is a perfectly able backup for Jack...it’s one position on the pitch where a player has to accept they will rarely play ...a bit like why it’s tough for Spurs to get a good backup for Kane...I hope by the end of this season Traore proves to be better than Trez...if not then one of the wingers will need to give way...

FW - I think Watkins looks like an excellent striker...whether we sign someone or not will heavily depend on Wes’s progress...he could prove to be a decent second choice...or maybe we will cut our losses and look for an upgrade ...

If all our signings work out this season which is a big if then next summer can naturally be quieter ...the less signings we make the better players we can buy ...

So in short...
Barkley
New LB
New CB
New CM

Maybe a little ambitious but ideal choices Nuno Mendes, Simakan and Anguissa ...could fit them and Barkley into £100-120m...but if not them then players of their ilk...

Very impressed with Villa tonight against Man Utd.

Really troubled United's defence throughout the match.

Dean Smith: Aston Villa manager charged by FA after red card

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has been charged by the Football Association after he was sent off during Wednesday's defeat by Manchester City.

Smith, 49, allegedly used abusive and/or insulting language towards a match official after City's opening goal in the 2-0 Premier League defeat.

City midfielder Rodri ran back from an offside position to tackle Tyrone Mings and pass to goalscorer Bernardo Silva.

After the match Smith described the decision as "farcical" and "pathetic".

The Aston Villa manager has until Tuesday, 26 January to respond to the FA charge.

Asked about the incident at full-time, Smith said: "I thought they would go over to the VAR screen. I saw the incident and saw it was kicking off, so I asked the fourth officials did they get juggling balls for Christmas?"

By the letter of the law, City's goal was legitimate because Mings was deemed to have deliberately played the ball. Subsequently, Rodri was not considered to have gained an advantage.
