England find themselves on the highest of white-ball pedestals. From a few rungs down below, Australia can only begrudgingly applaud, knowing all too well the peaks of dominating limited-overs formats. If last year was proof that Australia do take their T20I game seriously too, this past week was the clearest indicator of how far beyond England are in these two formats than all of their peers. They now hold both the 50 and the 20-over World titles, with the latter won at the hallowed MCG, much to the chagrin of the hosts.

But there's a quick opportunity for a fresh start. The current cricket calendar doesn't allow the victors of a major tournament to indulge in too much revelry, and neither can there be wallowing in disappointment for those that didn't go far. Australia will be glad about the latter as they get stuck into action right away. There's an ODI World Cup coming in less than a year's time, building up well for which comes with the added motivation of being able to put a stop to England's recent white-ball supremacy.

When: Australia vs England, 1st ODI, 01:50 PM Local Time

Where: Adelaide Oval

What to expect: There's rain forecast in Adelaide for the upcoming weekend but Thursday is expected to be a perfectly sunny day for some ODI cricket.

Team news:

Australia:

With Aaron Finch announcing his ODI retirement, Travis Head has the chance to put his hand up to be David Warner's regular opening partner in the 50-over format, with an eye on next year's World Cup in India.

Probable XI: David Warner, Travis Head, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Stoinis, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

England:

While 11 members of the T20 World Cup winning squad have stayed back in Australia for the ODI series, some of the attention will be on the players who have been handed a chance to make their ODI comebacks. The likes of James Vince, Sam Billings and Olly Stone - who last played an ODI in 2018 - will aim to impress early to become regulars in this format.

Probable XI: Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Dawid Malan, James Vince, Jos Buttler, Sam Billings, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Chris Jordan/Olly Stone

Did you know:

- Jason Roy is 46 away from 4000 ODI runs

- Adam Zampa has the most ODI wickets for Australia in 2022 with 19 dismissals

What they said:

"Eoin Morgan single handedly turned it around, and it's been a process over eight years when you look at the depth in terms of white-ball cricket that England possesses. It's pretty scary actually. So even with the injuries that happened in this World Cup, and the guys who missed out on the squad, the strength and depth is amazing to see. It started with Morgs, but it's kept on going and Jos has taken that on as probably the best white-ball batter in the world and as skipper now, it's the next step of his journey." - Sam Billings

"I actually feel like I've trained really, really well in the last couple of months. I know it hasn't flowed into the games as yet, but that's the beauty of it - I know it's just around the corner. And I remember going back to that day (against Pakistan in January 2017) with Davey (Warner) at the other end, he went at a million miles an hour and took the pressure off me. So I think as a batting partnership, we'll bounce off each other really well." -Travis Head

Squads:

Australia Squad: David Warner, Travis Head, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Marcus Stoinis, Cameron Green, Alex Carey(w), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins(c), Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar

England Squad: Jason Roy, Philip Salt, Dawid Malan, James Vince, Jos Buttler(w/c), Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Sam Billings, Chris Jordan, Olly Stone, Luke Wood

Sheesh, already? No time to celebrate for the English boys

Wonder how Austarlia vs England match would have gone.

Same result. Australia are the same as Pakistan rn. Strong bowling and shaky batting. If England won toss it would be the same thing.

England themselves was shaky until the semi-final. Two toss wins made their life easier. Australia vs England preliminary encounter would have been interesting at the MCG. Tall Australian bowlers would have been a handful there

Yeah, toss mattered at the final for sure. But I’ve come to terms with it. If you look at World Cup history, most of the teams that became champions had a bit of luck leaning their way that helped.

Starc would’ve been mad interesting in that pitch

Also why is England wearing the same kit we had pre WC? :))

Same design, same colors. They always wear so many different colors. Light blue, dark blue, red

Wish we stuck to that pre WC color scheme. Sea blue.

Malan back in form 78* at the moment

ENG 172/6 (32.5) CRR: 5.24
Australia opt to bowl

England collapsing on a flat pitch not knowing what to set

Not a flat pitch. There was enough seam movement and bounce first up. Also 2 kookaburra were great for batting when the quality was vlbad. Now both are swinging. Batting upfront is really tough.

This is a par performance by England so far.

Sounds like a snoozefest. ODIs are dead beyond World Cups and Champions Trophy for which they should be reserved. They need to bring back the old format of them being used as tuneups for Test Series. Not randomly thrown in

England definitely still in t20 mode the way they threw away their wickets this game

Not a huge surprise really. All that’s been played around the world (at every level) for the last 2-3 months has been T20 cricket. And equally the diet of T20 cricket nowadays is constant.

ODIs have a bit of a problem here. They lack of both the instant gratification of the T20 and the restriction-free strategic intensity of Test cricket. 50 overs seems a bit too long nowadays to be playing in pyjamas. I wonder if 40 would be better.

Dawid Malan playing well. He might get a nice one day hundred for himself here.

I’ve noticed this year that there don’t seem to be many white ball players left who one could imagine concentrating for the full 50 overs and making the effort to build a significant innings.

England should bring back Joe Root for ODIs to bat alongside Malan I’m thinking.

Yes, this is strange timing for a series and it’s visibly being played at quite a lax pace. I think some of the players would rather be chilling at home.

Solid 100 vs a good attack.

Still feels weird watching an ODI after so long

That 4.95 KFC deal looks good. Is KFC really that big in Australia lol it’s advertised in every ground quite a bit.

Fairly absurd they can't be home for two weeks and celebrate.

That's a ton for the Accumulator. Solid Dawid.

Quite the recovery this. From 63/4 to 247/7 and going.

Malan can open with Bairstow, and Root at 3. If they can get stokes back to ODIs. They will be favourites for the WC.

look at the save from Agar at 44.6 ball. babar couldn't even reach near the ball let alone try to catch it during the T20 Final.

287/9, good closing cameo from D Willey.

Malan brilliant for 134 of his own.

Competitive total hopefully.

England just about managed to get a tad above par. They could have got a fair bit more without Dawson's run out. Australia could have restricted England for a lot less if they had a better bowler than Agar.

ENG 287/9 (50)
AUS 4/0 (0.4) CRR: 6 REQ: 5.76
Australia need 284 runs

Any width outside off stump and Travis Head will destroy sramers as Pakistan found out earlier this year. Lines have to be tight to offstump.

Not enough runs on the board for England to defend without Wood and Archer.

England's reign as double white-ball champions began in defeat as Australia eased to a six-wicket win in the opening one-day international in Adelaide.

Dawid Malan fired a tremendous 134 from 128 deliveries to help a much-changed England post 287-9 from their 50 overs, having slumped to 66-4 after being put into bat by the hosts.

Australia made a blistering start to their reply, with top-scorer David Warner (86) and Travis Head (69) putting on a 147-run opening-wicket partnership inside the first 20 overs of their innings.

David Willey (2-51) was the pick of the English bowlers and removed Warner and Marnus Labuschagne in successive overs, although an unbeaten 80 from Steve Smith saw Australia comfortably chase down their victory target of 288 with 19 balls to spare.

What's next?

The ODI series continues in Sydney on Saturday, before the third and final match takes place in Melbourne on Tuesday

Amazing

Forgot this was on again. There is so much LO cricket now.

Good to see Stone playing again.

I'm not worried - no Bairstow, no Hales, no Rashid, no Mark Wood.

Watching the highlights - crowd worryingly sparse for an AUS vs ENG match.

Can't remember the last ODI i saw. When was the last ODI Pakistan played? Pakistan has played very few ODI's since the 2019 ODI WC. The ICC has prioritized T-20's over ODI's, there has to be a good balance between all the formats.

ODI's test your skills different vs T-20s.

lol. Sure it's popular but a definite second to McDonalds.

KFC HAS been associated with cricket sponsorship in a big way for seemingly decades here though. I remember even in the WI heyday it was KFC ads at the cricket and on TV.

Thursday on a work/school night when everyone is hanging in just a few more weeks until the long summer holidays. So was never going to be a big crowd in a poorly timed series.

Plus ODI is an odd format now.

Impressive win by Australia. For England, Jason Roy looked horrible and Olly Stone could not sustain speed for more than 3 overs.

Malan was extremely impressive though, on a wicket that offered quite a bit early on for the bowlers, he survived and cashed in to get England to par.

Australia have a number of spin options behind them for subcontinent conditions.

Zampa
Agar
Maxwell
Smith/Head

They can try with Green as third pacer and play two spinners in subcontinent.

Warner
Head
Smith
Any specialist ODI bat( no need for Stoinis)
Carey(wkt)
Green
Maxwell
Cummins
Starc
Zampa
Agar

Nah, pitch had nothing for anyone at any point. Cummins and Starc just bowled really really well.

Interesting. Yes I’ve seen plenty of KFC advertising every time I tune in to an Aussie game. Even during the BBL the crowd was wearing the chicken buckets as hats :))

Australia were always chasing this with Englands bowling attacks missing some fast bowlers interesting to see the strength of different teams batting wise Pakistan needs to find a few power hitters in ODIs to challenge the best teams at the World Cup.
