What's new

Australia [416 & 217/9d] beat New Zealand [166 & 171] by 296 runs in the 1st Test, lead series 1-0

Another poor dismissal.

Latham and Raval both looked scared out there.

Raval nervously leaving and then was so late on that ball because he was caught in the mind of leaving and left a straight ball.

2 gifts.

Both balls weren't wicket taking balls whatsoever.

Have to do far better than that.

Raval needs to be dropped, he hasn't been scoring runs. Don't care if there's no one else, he was struggling in first class cricket.

Both out to nothing balls, like Pakistan's top order.
Did you see him nervously leave the first 2 balls, it felt like he was going to get out leaving a straight ball - he pretty much did lol, he was so late on the straight ball.

Wait, Aus only have two pacers? No part time medium pacers.

Fortunately we had CdG to take up the third pacer role. Aus will have to bowl Wade and use Marnus and Warner who are spinners.

Australia showing why you need a pace bowling all-rounder.

They might get lucky under lights. But they are down to a two man pace attack now - even the Kiwis had a fourth quick and got 22 overs out of De Grandhomme in the absence of Ferguson.

I’m well aware of what’s wrong with Mitchell Marsh. But the flexibility that an all-rounder offers shouldn’t be underestimated.

Even if all you have is Pandiya or Faheem, outside Asia you need to pick them.

Need to survive this day with minimal damage and make merry tomorrow.

Man if only our ****** openers hadn't gifted their wickets away, at least they could have sheltered Kane and Taylor from the new ball.

Raval is an awful opener, why do kiwis persist with him!

15/2

He was solid before, this year he's been woeful even in domestic level. They're giving him a chance to find form, but we're basically play with 10 atm.

Have they started building new things in Perth? The city looks beautiful, don't remember it being this developed before.

Brilliant fightback from New Zealand batsmen - love their courage.

Great catch, can't say much about Kane there. He already had a life and didn't make use of it.

He's drifting further and further away from the likes of Smith and Kohli each time he plays.

There's a difference from a national great and an all time great.

Omg Labuschagne only one appealing for that :)))

Started screaming out loud and celebrating and said '100%'

Snicko showed nothing :)))

Smith's catch of Kane Williamson

It's going to be up to Taylor, Watling and co to save this Test.

Abysmal effort from the top order.

We suck.

Innings defeat likely.

Full strength Australia is a monster side in home conditions. You managed to bowl them out for 416 with 1 man down. Just look at what the team that toured before you did in their pink ball test.

Pakistan have out batted us so far lol..

I'm more frustrated with the way the players got out. They're playing like they're afraid of Aus..

The Kane hype is annoying, everyone hyped him up and talks like we have a Kohli or Smith when we don't have a player a fraction as good as them. He's a lot closer to Root than he is those two.

Are we in for another BJ Watling special? He rescued them against England. With older ball he can dig deep.

It's day 2 only. I don't think there is any chance for NZ to save this test unless someone plays an ATG knock. This is Australia's game now.

All wicket keepers enjoy in Australia vs Australia. Pant, Rizwan, Dekock. I exxpect Waling to score big here.

Raval and Nicholls are just filling up numbers for NZ. High time Nicholls should start performing as well. Don't think he did anything after that hundred vs Pakistan, atleast should contribute with 50s-60s.

Even Sarfaraz enjoyed batting against Australia and Bairstow as a wicketkeeper batted well in Australia.

Australia are well and truly in control of the first day-night Test against New Zealand in Perth after reducing the visitors to 109/5 by stumps for a lead of 307 on the second day.

The day began, however, with all eyes on Marnus Labuschagne, who was on 110 overnight. He had Travis Head for company, and the two began building their partnership, putting on 76 for the fifth wicket. Labuschagne has recently shown a penchant for big scores, but he wasn’t allowed to go too deep into the 100s here, with Neil Wagner getting one through him and clattering the stumps from around the wicket.

Thereafter, it was a case of the Australian batsmen putting on mini-partnerships. Head and Tim Paine, the captain, added 24 for the sixth wicket before Head fell to temptation and flashed outside off against Tim Southee. Paine hung around with Pat Cummins for company, putting on 38 before Cummins became Jeet Raval’s first wicket in Tests, bowled around the legs.

Then, with an adventurous Starc at the other end, Paine added what was a frustrating 45-run stand for New Zealand, but once Starc holed out, the innings didn’t take long to conclude.

Unfortunately for New Zealand, things only got worse from there. They were reduced to 2/1 within the first two overs after Tom Latham returned a catch to Starc, and Jeet Raval was confounded by a Josh Hazlewood inswinger. However, with Hazlewood limping off with an injury, Williamson and Taylor managed to revive the innings.

They put on a much-needed 76 for the third wicket, but as they approached the final stages of the day, New Zealand were once again put under the pump by Starc. He first had Williamson edging one, and Steve Smith took a blinder at slips. Then, Starc had the new man Henry Nicholls caught down leg, before adding the scalp of the nightwatchman Neil Wagner soon after.

New Zealand have a long day ahead.

India is the only true home monster. Aussies are beatable at home. south africa did it even when smith and warner played albeit against a weaker bowling attack at the time.

n.z are hopeless. Can't stand conditions specific players. I am sick of seeing them. Hope india deliver a phainta in n.z.
Unless the toss really made a difference there is absolutely no excuse for this shambolic performance so far by n.z

Same you can say about Australia winning in 2009 in South Africa with weaker attack despite having Kallis,Smith,Amla,Devillers, truth is Australia and South Africa conditions are familiar.

true. It's harder for Asian teams to beat australia in australia than it is for SENA countries and vice versa for SENa countries to win in india especially and pakistan. N.Z are just Australians bunnies though. Perennial choking bunnies. absolutely pathetic and useless. Should always be scheduled for a 2 test series specifically vs australia.

Yes i understand n.z beat pakistan in u.a.e recently but that was more of an aberration than the norm. N.z generally are terrible in Asia. It was just the perfect moment for them to take advantage of a weakened leader less Pakistani side. All the stars were aligned for them to snatch a win. No more misbah and younis etc. Bowling attack misfiring and pondering early retirement.

Kiwi cricketers are very loyal bunch , I can expect other nations to go on strike , good on their board as well.
Wonder if efficiency wise Kiwis are the most efficient of the lot around the world, even their output in Math olympiad is amazing.

Nah, most of them make a good living. Raval only plays Tests cricket (we don't play much) and isn't assured international cricket (not a lock for the team).

Australia well ahead here. Expect them to not enforce the follow on just to give their bowlers some rest .

We should avoid the follow on if we bat sensibly.

It will be easier to bat in the first 2 sessions, under lights its hard to see the ball and the pink ball (especially new) moves around quite a bit.

What phase of the match they collapsed? Was the ball swinging?

Raval (not good enough for this level), Latham gifted their wickets and Nicols was unlucky getting a nick down legside.

Kane was out twice in his 30 odd. He was the only one who got genuinely dismissed by the bowlers, twice. You could say Wagner was unlucky chopping onto a wide ball, but he's a tailender.

Australia will want rest anyway. Enough time to get a result. Can see Warner doing damage if he gets time to bat during the light period.

Aus are a bowler down, Wade is their third choice pacer.

if we don't avoid the follow on, it will be embarrassing.

Mate, I think you're being overly critical of your side. It's their first of six innings on this tour, and Perth is probably going to be their biggest challenge of the series. I only see them getting better after this game.

I really don't understand the downgrading of Williamson. As captain alone, he is miles better than Joe Root the batsman and captain. Kane is averaging 70 this year, which is second only to Steve Smith in the Fab 4. Oh and there's also the small matter of KW carrying NZ to the WC final earlier this year.

It's hard not to when people talk about him in the same breath as Kohli and Smith who are scoring big tons for fun while Kane is struggling for 100s. It's the over hyping and overrating, I would be more harsh on others if they were in Kane's position. All you hear is how good is technique is or how great he is when he does not score anywhere near as much as Kohli or Smith and tends to fail against good teams.

He is a very good batsman. Sure he has weakness just like everyone else. His bread and butter shot is tapping the ball down to third man. Sometimes he gets bowled inside edging. other times he edges one.
It is a case of his favorite shot is letting him down. Happens to all top cricketers. He just has to revisit this and make adjustments like all great players had to do over the years. Still a class player.

Mark Waugh is the most biased and worst commentator in the world.

And that wasn't out. Terrible decision.

NZ made a mistake going with Lockie over Matt Henry for this game.

If only they had managed even a 270 score in first inns they may have been able to bat 3.5-4 sessions to draw against a 2 man pace attack

But too much ground conceded

Every spell that Starc bowls now making Aussie selectors look like giant fools for picking Siddle in 3 Ashes tests

This Test is lost, the batsmen should see it as a net and try get some practice in these conditions.

Going to Aus with zero practice games to acclimitize to condition was a really dumb idea.
