Australia (474 & 234) hands India (369 & 155) an 184-run defeat in the 4th Test to take a 2-1 lead in the 5-match series

Rohit is not even taking the new ball instead bowling with Reddy. LAMO
he is dumb but reason for that is cause bumrah sat outside for 10 mins. So you have to wait for time to lapse before you can bowl again. Hence they delayed it till he was eligible to bowl again.

Carey is very underrated wicketkeeper and some delusion posters think rizwan can replace Carey in australia test eleven .

rohit's ultra stupid captaincy exposed. first ball strike with new ball Akash. Instead of using Akash he used SIraj for 7 overs.

Rizwan averages 46 with 66 Strike Rate in Australia. He has a better overall record than Carey as a Test batter. Moreover he is better in Asian conditions too.

You're literally coping right now.

40 odd impactful runs >>> 60 runs statpadding knock .
:kp

Some uneven bounce already.

I believe konstas has already played a match winning knock on debut.

The most audacious debut innings you'll ever see

Another 50 runs partnership coming up and that will kill the game for india.

I don't think this is 311/6 wicket. More like 250/8 first day wicket. Poor bowling rotation allowed Australia to get away.

Sam Konstas rattled Bumrah and Siraj. He was the difference

Dude. 60 runs is not rattled. Caught INdia off guard. India has come back from far far worse positions in Australia. Not using Deep as a new ball bowler. Not introducing Sundar for 50 overs. Using reddy just for 2 overs for 60 overs presented Australia with tired bowlers in 40 deegree heat. THey capitalized on it.

Jadeja was also introduced very late. Series of bad moves like now we are used to seeing now.

One big advantage is pitch is so slow compared to other pitches. Batsmen had loads of time to play shot. If our batsmen failed here by not seeing off new ball then they will have no one but to blame themselves.

That's the definition of rattled. India were caught off guard because of quick punches by Konstas at the start. Remove his quick fire runs and it might've been a different story

I am talking about opening the bowling with Deep. Siraj has been miserable with new ball entire series. THings could have been different.

India still in this game.

Aus should try to bat deep tomorrow and get Bumrah to bowl as many overs as possible.

Smith, Konstas help Australia take honours on Boxing Day in Melbourne

A stunning debut from a teenager on debut and some strong displays from the hosts' top-order saw Australia dominate the majority of the opening day of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

A dashing display from teenage debutant Sam Konstas and a return to form from veteran batter Steve Smith has helped Australia take the honours over India on an enthralling opening day to the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne on Thursday.

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah threatened tried to inspire his team with three valuable wickets - including the prized scalp of Travis Head for a duck - but Australia's top-order were in good touch as the hosts reached 311/6 at stumps with Smith unbeaten on 68 and skipper Pat Cummins at the crease on eight.

The efforts of Konstas highlighted the exciting opening day to the fourth Test, with the 19-year-old one of four Australian batters to score a half-century on Boxing Day as Smith, Marnus Labuschagne (72) and Usman Khawaja (57) all found scoring easy to come by after Cummins won the toss and elected to bat first on a hot and humid day in Melbourne.

Konstas overcame a nervy start to give the home side the perfect base, with his mid-pitch exchange with Virat Kohli in between overs drawing murmurs from a massive MCG crowd in excess of 87,000, with the Australian debutant displaying all his teenage flair to blast India's potent fast bowlers to all parts of the ground.

There were ramp shots, scoops, audacious pulls and plenty off edges and plays and misses from Konstas early in his innings, but the 19-year-old grew in confidence with every passing minute at the crease.

He brought up his 50 in just 52 deliveries, before finishing his 65-ball innings - that included six fours and two massive sixes - when trapped LBW by India spinner Ravindra Jadeja (1/54) as Australia went to lunch at 112/1 and in control.

Bumrah continued to be a threat and had Khawaja mis-time a pull shot during the middle session and was caught at mid-wicket by KL Rahul, as both sides fought hard for the momentum as they try and edge towards a place at next year's ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord's.

Labuschagne and Smith went to tea at 176/2 and looked set to build a big partnership, but Bumrah's timely intervention saw three wickets fall in quick succession as Australia were quickly reduced to 246/5 and the Indian crowd finally found their voice.

Akash Deep (1/59) was rewarded for his persistancy and got in on the act to dismiss Alex Carey (31) courtesy of the second new-ball just as the cool change swept into Melbourne, giving India some hope heading into the second day on Friday.

India made one change to their side, with Shubman Gill left out of the XI in a massive surprise and skipper Rohit Sharma named to bat at No.3 in his place. The captain did indicate prior to the toss that he will most likely open the batting.

All-rounder Washington Sundar was the player to come into the XI and slated to bat at No.7.

Would you have taken this scoreline at the start of play?

I think India have done ok here
No. I don't accept it tbh.

Kohli rohit siraj are still playing. So we are essentially playing withh 9 players when we have better replacements. But considering the constraints I guess yea but ideally 250 /7 or something.

Good day overall for both team I would say.

Day 1: Stumps
AUS 311/6 (86) CRR: 3.62
One team has already scored a match winning score and 4 wickets still left.

Another 90 runs and india will be in Deep trouble. Australia 80 ,draw-5, india 15% chance

But this indian team is always surprised us in Australian conditions so let's hope for the another new year surprised.

:kp

India has done so many miracles in Australia over the last 24 years especially last 2 tours. But under Rohit I just don't get that miracle vibe. Infact I find the opposite vibe. Even from winning position Rohit can lose a match. We saw how he allowed Tim southee hacking his way in the recent test match.

Fearless Konstas reveals plans that helped him quell India's quicks

The debutant discussed the tactics he used as he registered a quickfire half-century against India during the Boxing Day Test.

Teenage debutant Sam Konstas has admitted he played with no fear when taking apart India's potent pace attack in a superb display of attacking batting on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

Konstas overcame a nervy start against Jasprit Bumrah and Co to score an impressive half-century on debut on the biggest day of Australia's cricket calendar on Thursday that helped put his side in a strong position at 311/6 at stumps in the crucial fourth ICC World Test Championship contest.

It was a brash approach that Konstas used against India's bevy of quality quicks and one that paid off in spades as he smashed six fours and two massive sixes when producing shots that have rarely been seen during the opening hour on the first day of a Test match.

And while Konstas admitted many of his audacious scoops, ramps and front-foot pull shots were pre-mediated, the confident 19-year-old revealed the thought of failing on Test debut had never entered his mind as he strode to the crease in front of 87,000 fans at the MCG.

"I always like to go out first and assert my dominance in a way and try to earn the crease,” Konstas said after play.

"I told (Usman Khawaja) it was straight away I'm facing first ball and he's so good to bat with, very calm and relaxed and just time to trust my instincts and back my game.

"The boys and (skipper) Pat Cummins have been really good to me, just saying, be myself and I'm here for a reason because I'm scoring runs, so I felt that was the right moment today to do it and yeah, it paid off.

"I think it probably will look silly if I do get out, but I worked pretty hard on that (ramp) shot and I feel like it's probably a safe shot for me really.

"But I think that's the beauty about being young, it may be a bit naive but I'm just trying to put pressure back on the bowlers, that's the best way I think and I did today and it was good to get a few runs."

Konstas suggested he won't change his approach in the future and expects many of the next generation of Test stars will follow his lead.

"I reckon maybe 20 or 30 years ago people were probably saying defend a lot and just bat all day," Konstas said.

"But I think new generation, there are new shots and it's exciting for me obviously as I like doing that and putting pressure back on the bowlers and hopefully it pays off in the next innings."

While Konstas' tactics may have surprised a few teams, India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar said his side was expecting this approach from the young right-hander as they saw him in full flow during a contest against the Prime Minister's XI at the start of the month when he scored a superb century in Canberra.

"We saw him when we played the PM XI game prior to that as well, he got a hundred against us then as well. We knew what we were up against," he said.

"It was refreshing to see someone come and play good cricket, whether that’s in our team or the opposition. It’s not something that surprised us, we did expect (it), and we obviously saw a lot of videos and we watched him practice as well.

"So we had an understanding that those are his strengths, they may be different from someone else’s. It’s always pleasing to the eye when it works."

Rohit and Kohli’s return to form a matter of 25-30 deliveries, says Nayar

India’s assistant coach opens up on the low returns of the two experienced campaigners in the ongoing series against Australia.

A matter of concern for India in their push for retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia has been the recent form of senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

While the Indian skipper has amassed a mere 152 runs from his last 13 Test innings, Kohli’s hundred in Perth is only his second fifty-plus score in his last 15 Test innings.

Indian assistant coach Abhishek Nayar though thinks that the duo’s return to their best is a matter of regaining confidence and composure in the initial phase of their innings.

“I always believe it’s about having that confidence and getting off to a good start. If they get that, their game looks different. I believe both Rohit and Virat are the kind of players that if they face 25-30 deliveries, you’ll see them back in their usual form,” he said at the end of the first day’s play in Melbourne.

Nayar doubled down on Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s comments ahead of the fourth Test, where he backed Virat Kohli to find his way back in form.

“Modern day greats will figure their path,” Rohit had said when inquired about Kohli’s string of dismissals nicking the ball outside off stump.

“As Rohit said, generally when you’re having a discussion with an experienced player, it’s around their focus and game plan. Every player has their weakness. They will get dismissed one way or another. The thought is behind making sure what kind of zone they need to make those runs,” Nayar added.

A change in India’s lineup for the Boxing-Day Test saw the exclusion of Shubman Gill as Rohit confirmed his own return to the top of the batting order.

India’s assistant coach explained the reason behind Gill being dropped was also to bolster their bowling attack.

“We felt in these conditions, looking at the pitch, having Washi (Washington Sundar) in the bowling attack will give us variations, especially towards the end once the ball gets old.

“That was an area we wanted to get better at. We felt that Washi could give us that solidity with Jaddu. Especially the way Travis Head and Alex Carey were getting the runs lower down the order.”

After opting to bat first, Australia pounded early runs at the MCG, courtesy of half-centuries from both the openers. Making his debut, Sam Konstas fired an impressive 60, that featured him taking the attack to India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.

While Nayar showered praise on the youngster for his debut outing, he commended the Indian bowlers for making a comeback in the latter half of the day, having managed six wickets by stumps.

“A lot of credit to the way Sam played. The intent he showed in the first few overs sort of put us on the backfoot. But I felt it took a lot of character from our bowlers to stick in there,” Nayar said.

“It wasn't the easiest conditions to bowl, we felt. They were good to bat on. At times like that, it’s important to stick to your guns. I felt we came back really strong post-Lunch. Bowling those maidens, putting the pressure.

“At times like that, you are taken by surprise when someone plays a knock like that. But I felt we responded really well and through the day kept at it, and reaped the rewards towards the end. Overall, you look at the day, we were happy with where we ended.”

I think he’s just trying to see them through this series as Warner already retired

He’s been a great player for them but yes, looks like his time is up

Yes, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was to announce before the last test in the series.

It was a scratchy innings which lacked fluency.

Having said that, Misbah would’ve been proud of this innings as well all know what his batting was like in Australia.

I'd really like to see a Kohli-Rohit 300 run partnership tomorrow. It's the least he could do if he's going to shoulder-barge someone and not look like a goose.
Kuch bhi lol. 30 runs max between the 2

Bumrah once again saves India from humiliation. This could've been easily 380/3 instead of 311/6 for Australia.

Advantage Australia. They look set to score around 375-390. Enough to win the Test. I don't trust Indian batting at all. Too many walking wickets and has beens.

Kohli and Rohit will be happy to score 30 runs between them. I can already see how these 2 will be dismissed. Kohli will chase wide deliveries and will deftly nick it to keeper. Rohit plays a pull to be caught at square leg or gets cleaned up with an incoming delivery. Too slow of reflexes.

India are one wicket from being ahead of the game.

First session tomorrow will have a big impact on the result.

India are already behind the game.

300 is already a mammoth score for fragile and frail Indian batting lineup. India will eek out 250 if they get lucky.

We will see in 2nd innings or in next test.

But stop hyping a player just based on one innings lol

Washington Sundar played his first test against australia in australia and he smashed Cummins for a six and four in consecutive delivery to put india brink of famous win at gabba . Yad to h na ??

Tbh, I am watching BGT series with genuine interest for the first time, this once

Disappointing captaincy by rohit. Bumrah is bailing Ind out repeatedly. Aus was 240-2 with head still to come. Could have easily been 350-3 with head still there. Time for the ind batting to stand up especially the 2 spineless leeches rohit and kohli

Head's wicket saved India atleast 100 runs. That has somewhat offset the damaged done by Konstas. But problem is Smith is in ungetouttable mood. He plays like prime DHoni in ODI. Survives brilliantly.

Just wonder what would've been score had head survived. Also the pace of run following would have been like Bazball plus.

This is somewhat a road wicket with less pace compared to first 3 tests.. He would have enjoyed it thoroughly had he hung around. But lord of the G in modern era is Smith. He is still ther. He averages 82 here with 4 centuries on this ground. This is going to be his 5th.

Australian cricket yesterday recorded its highest ever attendance for a single day.

A total of 152,375 fans attended Day 1 of the NRMA Insurance Boxing Day Test at the MCG and the KFC BBL|14 matches at the Sydney Cricket Ground and Optus Stadium.

This is a 26% increase on the record set 12 months ago when 120,662 fans came through the gates on Boxing Day 2023.

In Melbourne, a crowd of 87,242 watched Australia score 6-311 after electing to bat first in the fourth NRMA Insurance Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test. This was a record attendance for a day of Test cricket against India in Australia.

The day’s second match saw the Sydney Sixers defeat the Melbourne Stars by eight wickets in front of 23,212 fans, the largest ever crowd at the SCG’s annual Boxing Day fixture.

The national single day attendance record was then sealed at Optus Stadium, as the Perth Scorchers welcomed 41,921 fans – their second largest ever crowd for a home and away match – to watch them defeat reigning champions Brisbane Heat by 33 runs.

The Boxing Day attendance record comes after total and single day records were set for Test matches against India in Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane and with the Big Bash achieving significant increases in attendances and broadcast audiences across Foxtel and Seven.

Nick Hockley, Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer, said:
“Boxing Day 2024 has been a landmark day for Australian Cricket, with records tumbling across all three venues to play host to Test and BBL matches.

“To set a new single day attendance record of 152,375 is a proud moment for Australian Cricket and reflects our sport’s popularity and strength nationwide.

“Those at the MCG will never forget Sam Konstas’ incredible Test debut, while two thrilling BBL matches have continued a trend of nail-biting finishes every night.

“The unmissable on-field action has driven record crowds to every Test match, with all formats experiencing attendance and audience growth this summer.

“We thank all those who watched or attended a match on an incredible day for cricket and look forward to seeing packed venues around the country for the remainder of the summer.”

Aus needs to.wrap up this match for good. That's the only way hokli and Rhoti will.get dropped... If these 2 are playing the next series for India it bodes bad for the future....

Wonderful Aakash Deep bowling wayyy outside the offstump making it hard to score. Wides needs to be introduced for tests for Indian Lance Kluseners like Aakash Deep.
