From the squad on duty for the Commonwealth Bank Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Ashton Agar, the Western Australia left-arm spinner, and his fellow left-armer Stephen O’Keefe, have been drafted in, while fast bowler Chadd Sayers and batsman Nic Maddinson have been omitted.

Commenting on the squad Interim National Selector Trevor Hohns said: “We have chosen a 13-man squad, including three spinners and an all-rounder to give ourselves maximum options once we see the pitch and determine what our final eleven will be.

“Both Ashton Agar and Stephen O’Keefe have performed well in first-class cricket this summer and both have bowled well at the SCG this season too, so they deserve their selections here. And having them in Sydney along with Nathan Lyon means that we can have the three spinners working together in the lead-up to the Test.

“Chadd Sayers is unfortunate to miss out having been around the team for the past three Tests but with the expectation that the surface will offer assistance to spinners we think the balance of this squad is more appropriate for the conditions we expect to encounter.

“Nic Maddinson has been omitted after having a taste of Test cricket, something that will definitely benefit him, and we now want him to go back to domestic cricket and dominate to demand a return to the line-up, something we are confident he will do.

Ashton Agar said: “After hitting the winning runs for the (Perth) Scorchers on Thursday night and then getting the call from Trevor Hohns on Friday morning, it hasn’t been a bad 24 hours!

“I’m excited to be back in the squad and I’m looking forward to joining up with the group. I have happy recent memories of bowling at the SCG this season (he took 10 wickets for Western Australia against New South Wales in a Sheffield Shield match at the venue in November) but I know it will be up to the selectors to decide whether or not I make the final eleven.”

Steve O’Keefe said: “It’s great to be in the squad again, especially after the frustration of the tour to Sri Lanka earlier in the year, but I’m not getting ahead of myself. It’s up to me to impress at practice over the next few days, hopefully earn a spot in the final eleven and then bowl well if given the opportunity.”

The NSP is made up of Trevor Hohns (Chairman), Greg Chappell, Darren Lehmann and Mark Waugh.

Looks like Nic Maddinson played his last test today.

Watch us collapse to Ashton Agar or O' Keefe if they play.

Especially O'Keefe because he has two prime variations. The one that doesn't turn and the one that doesn't turn the other way.

Seems like the aussies want to prepare the two spinners ahead of the India tour. Giving a feel, around the team. Im sure it will be the same XI for the SCG. After what happened today.

Maxwell has no chance. Agar's selection proves that.

And Voges is over.

So you reckon Agar has been selected keeping his batting prowess in mind? Maxwell is one of the best players of spin bowling in Aus and even Ponting is vouching for him.

Also I think Aus need the experience of Voges in the middle. Would be sad if he isn't given another chance.

Maxwell is a completely unreliable player and Agar was selected with some batting in mind.

Maxwell has also spent the last few months burning bridges and even doing it publicly while not scoring runs.

And he didn't do well in India or the UAE when batting.

Warne backs Agar over O'Keefe for SCG Test

Australian cricket great Shane Warne says Test selectors should look beyond the "safety option" of Steve O'Keefe as a second spin option at the SCG.

O'Keefe and fellow left-arm spinner Ashton Agar were both included in Australia's 13-man squad for Tuesday's third Test against Pakistan, with batsman Nic Maddinson and seamer Chadd Sayers making way.

The pair are set to fight it out to line up alongside offspinner Nathan Lyon, who shrugged off his recent criticsim of his bowling with a crucial three-wicket spell to help Australia claim an unlikely victory in the Boxing Day Test.

With the hosts wrapping up a 2-0 series win with their last-gasp triumph in Melbourne, the dead-rubber in Sydney shapes as an audition for the spinners ahead of February's tour of India.

O'Keefe, who showed promise during Australia's tour of Sri Lanka before injuring his hamstring, is well-placed to earn selection at his home ground.

But Warne, Australia's greatest spinner with 708 Test wickets, says Agar's ability to unleash serious turn and flight should place him at the top of the queue.

"I think he is the best spinner worth a try," Warne said on Friday in the Nine Network commentary box.

"I think O'Keefe is more of a white ball specialist. I don't think he's a red ball player. I know he bowls very economically and he's a good cricketer but I think he's a lot better suited to white-ball cricket.

"I would like to see us develop somebody in the Test match arena like an Agar and persist with someone like him. I think O'Keefe is just a safety option."

O'Keefe's first-class record of 218 wickets at 23.64 suggests Warne's assessment of the 32-year-old was somewhat harsh.

Either way, Australia coach Darren Lehmann's belief that Agar has the potential to be a genuine allrounder may be enough to tip the balance in his favour.

The 23-year-old famously scored 98 on his Test debut against England at Trent Bridge in the 2013 Ashes and has a first-class batting average of 26.41 compared to O'Keefe's 11.00.

"He's made Shield hundreds and obviously batted well in that Test match at No.11," Lehmann said on Friday.

"He's certainly got the talent to be a batting allrounder or a spinning allrounder, either way."

Basically Warne is full of it and has barely seen O'Keefe bowl or even bothered to look at his cricinfo page.

Warne is a great cricket mind but ignore everything he says about domestic players because he doesn't watch domestic cricket at all beyond the Big Bash.

Perhaps Warne mixed up O'Keefe's FC bowling average of 23.5 with his List A bowling average of 56...

Lehmann backs Agar’s all-rounder claims for recall

Coach Darren Lehmann views Ashton Agar as a “genuine all-rounder” putting him in line to be part of Australia’s spin tandem in Tuesday’s final Test against Pakistan in Sydney.

Agar, 23, is on track to play his first Test since his unheralded debut in the 2013 Ashes series in England, where he scored 98 in his first Test at Trent Bridge batting at No. 11. But the West Australian left-hander is now being assessed as a “genuine” all-rounder, impressing selectors Greg Chappell and Mark Waugh and has a first-class batting average of 26.

Agar was added to a 13-man Australia squad on Friday along with fellow spinner Steven O’Keefe with one of them likely to partner Nathan Lyon on a spin-friendly SCG pitch for the “dead” third Test.

Lehmann said after Friday’s innings and 18-run second Test series-clinching win over Pakistan in Melbourne that if Australia went into the final Test with two spinners the team would also need an all-rounder.

Selectors have also included Zimbabwe-born all-rounder Hilton Cartwright in the Sydney squad, but Lehmann highlighted Agar’s all-round qualities.

“He’s made Shield hundreds and batted well for us in that (Ashes) Test match at No. 11,” Lehmann told reporters. “He’s certainly got the talent to be a batting all-rounder or a spinning all-rounder, either way.”

“We wanted a left-armer to go away from all their right-handers as well to give us options. He also got 10 wickets in a Sheffield Shield game in Sydney. He’s improved, we get feedback from (WA coach) Justin Langer and the guys have been watching him, they’ve been impressed with him,” Lehmann added. “If you play two spinners you normally need an allrounder, so that’s what we’re looking at.”

Agar says he sees himself as an all-rounder to fit the mould Australia are seeking. “I guess I’ve been selected in this squad as a spinner, but I think I’m capable with bat and ball,” Agar told reporters yesterday.

On potentially batting at No. 7, Agar added: “I think I would be able to if I was given that opportunity. You just have to make good decisions, and that’s what I’m learning more each time I’m batting in first-class cricket, is the best players consistently make good decisions.”

Lehmann said O’Keefe had to stay fit after the 32-year-old’s recent run of injuries. O’Keefe injured his hamstring in the first Test against Sri Lanka and was set to replace Lyon in the third day-night Test against South Africa in Adelaide last month before succumbing to a calf injury.

“He wouldn’t want too many more injuries, he’d want to make sure he’s playing cricket,” Lehmann said. “That’s the greatest thing we have now, we’ve got young players coming through who are fit and well.

“Steven did a really good job for us in Sri Lanka before he got injured, did a good job last year in Sydney as well. He knows he’s got to be fit and ready to play each and every game.”

Lehmann praised Lyon’s bowling in the second innings of the Melbourne Test where he snared the crucial wickets of Younis Khan, captain Misbah-ul-Haq and in-form No. 6 Asad Shafiq to crack the game wide open.

“I thought Nathan Lyon was outstanding, he bowled consistent line and length, which was up and down in the previous few Test matches,” Lehmann said. “Three or four balls an over have been there, but today (Friday) was a lot better. He got through the middle order and so I’m pleased for him.”

Aussies play 2 spinners at Sydney

Hilton Cartwright in at 6 as a batsman and part-time third seamer. Nic Maddinson out.

Steve O'Keefe replaces Jackson Bird.

Curator has been told to prepare a dry, dusty track as a rehearsal for the India tour.

Good. Now please, just win the toss and get 400-450 on the board and leave the rest to Yasir Shah.

Pakistan's foolishness in not picking Hammad Azam or Aamer Yamin exposed again.

Australia have two spinners but 2.5 quicks with Cartwright in.

Pakistan can only accommodate Mohammad Nawaz as a second spinner by dropping down to just 2 quicks. In Australia. Insanity! Did they not foresee that Sydney might be a turner as per tradition?

In my opinion they should drop Misbah and Sohail Khan and replace them with Azhar Mahmood and Mohammad Nawaz. At least Mahmood could bowl a few overs as third seamer. And he's younger than Misbah!

The more I think about, the selection of Azhar Mahmood is evolving from semi-joke material to the only responsible option.

You just can't go into a Test at Sydney with no third quick or no second spinner. Both options are tantamount to cricketing suicide.

Inzamam as a captain was also poor , as a selector is also same. Who on earth will play same squad in UAE , NZ and then Australia. Despite loosing. Just pathetic.

Pakistan should be kicking themselves for not drawing the second test. It was cricketing suicide. The third test is there for the taking.

Aus needs hard-nosed bloke like Border or Waugh to take over the coaching position.. Don't see them flourishing under Lehmann..

I would like to see Asghar in the eleven but management will play the fake all rounder Nawaz who is good for nothing

That's exactly what Pakistan did in the last test...

Yasir is clearly out of form, he's losing his action along with that his accuracy and potency.

Yasir has been a joke in Australia.

Azhar Ali has been outbowling him

Different pitch and hopefully, different luck.

Different pitch though.

Pitch in Sydney is going to take plenty of turn and Aus is playing this as a rehearsal for Indian tour. Given how Aus plays on turning tracks, I think Pakistan has a good chance to win this test if Yasir bowls even reasonably well.

When was the last time Aus played with 2 spinners in Aus? Anyone ??
