Australia tour of South Africa (2023)

I hope Nortje is ok though, he suffered a back spasm today so he only bowled 5 overs. Hope he is ok for the WC

Disappointing show by SA in their own backyard. The we’re thrashed today. They should have won the 1st odi.

POTCHEFSTROOM: Proteas fast bowler Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the third Betway One-Day International (ODI) against Australia, scheduled for Tuesday, 12 September at the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom.

The 29-year-old left the field after bowling five overs during the second ODI in Bloemfontein on Saturday due to lower back spasms.

He returned to bat during the chase but still requires further assessment and will undergo scans in Johannesburg on Monday. An update will follow in due course.

Mitch Marsh: We gonna bowl first. Hopefully, we get off to a nice start. Hazlewood, and Stoinis are in and Sangha comes in for his debut. Zampa is not playing. Been a long time since we won an ODI series in South Africa, so really excited. We want to assess conditions and make sure we execute our plans.

Temba Bavuma: We weren't too sure what to do. Wicket looks drier than it normally is. We got 4 changes. Reeza comes in for RVD. Sisanda Magala comes in and also Keshav Maharaj is in. Last game we had 4 guys who got into the 40s, the intent is there it is just about putting in the performances.

South Africa (Playing XI): Quinton de Kock(w), Temba Bavuma(c), Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Sisanda Magala, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi

Australia (Playing XI): David Warner, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh(c), Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey(w), Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, Tanveer Sangha, Josh Hazlewood

Australia has also decided to go down the England route. They are smashing bowlers more than England does. It's going to be a great clash of playing styles at the World Cup. England and Australia with their 400 runs target from the outset. India/Pakistan/NZ who like to take the game deep and hit at the end.

Australia very much in the commanding position after 18 overs at 155/2. South Africa need to pick up a couple of wickets soon.

SA 338/6 (50 overs)

Australia 157/3 (19 overs) CRR: 8.26 REQ: 5.87

Australia need 182 runs from 31 overs

South Africa Dominates, Secures 111-Run Victory Over Australia

South Africa put up a commanding score of 338/6 in their 50 overs, led by remarkable performances from Quinton de Kock and a century by Aiden Markram. In response, Australia was bowled out for 227 in just 34.3 overs, resulting in South Africa winning by a significant margin of 111 runs.

Early on, Australia's chase seemed promising with Warner and Head's aggressive start. However, South Africa's spin duo, Shamsi and Maharaj, turned the game around, applying pressure and taking crucial wickets. Shamsi's charged-up bowling saw the departure of the in-form Labuschagne, and the rest of Australia's lineup soon crumbled.

Aiden Markram was named Player of the Match, who expressed how pleased he was with his performance. Temba Bavuma, South Africa's captain, was pleased with the performance after his team crumbled in the last match and emphasized the team's continued aim to improve. On the other side, Australian captain Mitchell Marsh acknowledged their areas for improvement and commended South Africa's performance.

South Africa's victory keeps the series alive at 2-1 in Australia's favor.

I'm glad they managed to win despite Nortje's injury. It keeps the series alive and well

Aiden Markram’s superb unbeaten century helped the Proteas secure a big 111-run victory over Australia in the third match of the Betway One-Day International (ODI) Series played at the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom on Tuesday.

The right-hander plundered four sixes and nine fours as he reached 102 with the final delivery of the South Africa innings – helping them post 338 for six after losing the toss and being asked to bat first.

In what was the hosts’ best performance of the tour so far, there was a significant 146-run opening partnership between Quinton de Kock (82 off 77 balls, 10 fours, 2 sixes) and Temba Bavuma (57 off 62 balls, 6 fours) that set the tone.

Reeza Hendricks (39) and Marco Jansen (32) also collected some handy runs, before four wickets by Gerald Coetzee (4/50) helped blow away the Australians for just 227 in 34.3 overs.

Although the fast bowler was the most successful, the hard yards were done by outstanding spin duo Tabraiz Shamsi (2/29) and Keshav Maharaj (2/37).

It means the five-match series is still alive and the South Africans now have a first win of the 2023/24 campaign after losing the first five games – they lost the three-match KFC T20 International Series by a 3-0 margin.

And they were full value for the win here thanks to a much-improved showing in the North West.

Powered by the De Kock-Bavuma stand, the Proteas flew out of the blocks by reaching 146 in the 23rd over, before both fell within the space of seven deliveries.

However, Hendricks and Markram then rebuilt with a stand of 76 that took the total to 226 when the former was run-out courtesy of a Marnus Labuschagne direct hit.

The pair were amongst three quick wickets to fall, alongside Heinrich Klaasen (0) and David Miller (8), but Marco Jansen delivered four fours and a six in a 16-ball cameo that upped the tempo, and Markram then ended strongly to help set 339.

The tourists started well thanks to David Warner (78 off 56 balls, 10 fours, 3 six), Travis Head (38) and Mitchell Marsh (29), at one stage scoring more than eight to the over and reaching 140 for one in the 15th over.

But the introduction of the slower bowlers dramatically altered the course of the game, with Shamsi taking out captain Marsh as well as Player of the Match from the previous two games, Labuschagne (15).

Coetzee began to benefit from the pressure at the same time, making merry with a career-best return.

Meanwhile, Maharaj collected two important wickets of Marcus Stoinis (10) and Sean Abbott (2) during a fine spell of spin.

In the end, the visiting team crumbled and were all out with more than 15 overs to spare.

Proteas fast bowler Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the remaining two matches of the Betway One-Day International (ODI) series against Australia due to a lower back injury.

The 29-year-old underwent scans and consulted with a specialist this week, and will start bowling again this weekend under the supervision of the Proteas medical team. A further update will be provided in due course.

No replacement has been named.

ODI captain Temba Bavuma is unavailable for selection for the fourth ODI at SuperSport Park, Centurion on Friday.

Bavuma has a right adductor strain and as a precautionary measure, he has been ruled out of the match.

Aiden Markram will captain the side in Bavuma’s absence.

What a crazy innings from Klaasen and Miller
Can South Africa get 400?

Zampa conceded 113 from his ten overs, seriously wild hitting from Klaasen

Klaasen is in the form of his life, I saw the game that was brutal hitting, and Miller was pretty good as well.

All these professional teams like Eng, Aus, NZ, RSA, who don't get carried away by stardom will likely do well at the WC as compared to some subcontinent teams who go over the moon after every win or good performance.

Markram, Klaasen, Miller is a dangerous middle order. Hopefully travis head doesnt have a fractured hand, as that would mean Marnus would find his way in the world cup playing XI

Australia need some miracle here if they want to chase this huge target.
Certainly, Tim david is the one who can change the game.

Heatbreak for carey, out on 99. Deserved a hard fought century against the run of play. Missed the klaasen and miller show earlier, will certainly watch the highlights later

South Africa vs Australia: 4th ODI - A Turning Tide at Centurion

In the vibrant landscape of Centurion, the 4th ODI between South Africa and Australia unfolded with electrifying action. From massive partnerships to individual brilliance, the game had everything a cricket aficionado could ask for.

South Africa's Batting Brilliance:
Setting the tone, the Proteas blazed their way to a commanding 416/5. The heart of this mountainous total was Heinrich Klaasen, whose aggression truly shone. Targeting the spinners, building steady partnerships, and accelerating towards the end, he was the linchpin of the innings. With him, partnerships swelled, first with Rassie Van Der Dussen, taking the score projection from 320 to a more formidable 380, and then alongside Miller, setting a mammoth target of 416.

Australia's Response:
In response, Australia, although spirited, was never in any position to threaten South Africa. The only solace in their innings of 252 in 34.5 overs was Alex Carey, who played a fighting knock. With 9 boundaries and 4 maximums, he was inches away from a well-deserved century, being dismissed at 99.

Key Stats and Figures:

South Africa's Batting:
Heinrich Klaasen: 174 from just 83 deliveries. He hit 13 sixes and 13 fours

Australia's Batting:
Alex Carey: 99 runs off 77 balls. SR: 128.57.

Bowling Insights:
South African pacers led the charge with Ngidi's figures standing out at 8-1-51-4. Rabada, ever the threat, chipped in with a 7-0-37-1 spell.

Afterthoughts:
With that, South Africa have leveled the series at 2-2. As the teams gear up for the final showdown on Sunday, fans worldwide will be glued to their screens, hoping for another high scoring classic.

South africa loses their captain Bavuma in the 2nd over due to a run out. very unfortunate for Bavuma as he was in top form.

De Kock's last home innings in ODIs for South Africa comes to an end. He is gone after scoring 27 runs off 39 balls.

After 15 overs South Africa is 65/2 with Van der Dussen and Markram in the middle.

Van der Dussen is gone for 48 ball 30. South Africa are 82 for 3 after 19 overs.

Haha imagine RIZWAN and Imam in our batting lineup.

And then Klaasen, Miller, Gill, KL, Iyer, etc.

What pathetic so called batters we have in these two players.

Klaasen is out :(
I was hoping to see some more fireworks from him
South Africa 111/4 after 25.1 overs

Wow, that 98M six from miller was a beaut. Hits Zampa out of the Wonderers. What will he do to Shadab haha

A huge series win for South Africa ahead of the World Cup. Before the series not many giving them great chance of winning the series against the mighty Australian team especially when the visitors were 2-0 up in the series.

A career-best five-for by Marco Jansen helped the Proteas demolish Australia by 122 runs in the Betway One-Day International (ODI) series-decider at DP World Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday.

The 23-year-old also carted a crucial 23-ball 47 to go with his five for 39 as South Africa completed one of their finest comebacks against their old rivals to take the series 3-2 in what was their final match before heading for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup next week.

Jansen’s effort with the bat was much needed after they struggled early on and had to be rescued by half-centuries from Aiden Markram (93 off 87 balls, 9 fours, 3 sixes) and David Miller (63 off 65 balls, 4 fours, 3 sixes) as well as a breezy unbeaten 38 off 19 by Andile Phehlukwayo which helped them amass 315 for nine.

The visitors made a strong start to the reply despite Jansen claiming the first two wickets, but he hit back to reduce them from 124 for two to 136 for five on their way to a collapsing for 193 in 34.1 overs. Keshav Maharaj also claimed four wickets, finely capping his own injury return story after he was a major doubt for the global event in India.

It was the perfect send-off from Rob Walter’s team, who did not enjoy the best first half of the tour after losing the KFC International T20 (T20I) series 3-0 and then falling 2-0 down in the ODIs.

But they have been incredible ever since with almost everyone playing key roles at some stage or the other. The result also ensured Australia had for the first time in their history lost three ODIs by over 100 runs.

They lost the toss and were put in to bat first by the tourists, a decision that looked to be spot on early one when slipped to 104 for four in the 19th over.

The fit-again Temba Bavuma was run out for nought, Quinton de Kock in his final home ODI before retiring from the format made 27, Rassie van der Dussen hit 30 and the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen was dismissed by the most successful bowler on the day Adam Zampa (3/70) for six.

That put the South Africans under pressure and Markram and Miller had to dig deep to rebuild during a partnership of 109 for the fifth wicket.

Jansen then picked up the baton by clubbing three sixes and four fours in a blistering performance, although his dismissal together with that of Miller two overs earlier looked to have stifled the Proteas in their quest to at least reach 300.

However, Phehlukwayo answered that call and smashed four sixes and two fours, three of his maximums coming in the final over in which he took 24 to lift the hosts to 315 for nine.

In reply, David Warner (10) and Josh Inglis (0) were removed early. Captain Mitchell Marsh (71 off 56 balls, 6 fours, 6 sixes) responded strongly with Marnus Labuschagne (44) alongside him as the pair put on 90 together.

But the away side then lost eight for 69 as Jansen continued to run riot on his way to a maiden career five-wicket haul in all List A cricket. Together with spinner Maharaj, they sent the Australians tumbling to 193 all out with more than 15 overs to spare, sealing another big and important win for the home side
