Australia v Pakistan | 2nd Test | Melbourne | Dec 26-30, 2016 | Day 3

Why are you underestimating Sher Khan batting... Australia bowling is good as any other bowling line up in the world, its sohail khan who is making the batting easier.

Yeap, he did well against NZ too.

I think we need to keep things in perspective here.

After lunch we can try and reach 500 but then we should look for a declaration.

If Pakistan want to draw this, then they can bat for another session or so, but a win means declare at 500 no matter how good the batsmen are playing.

Australian bowling is going through a really lean patch. This is the worst I have ever seen them. Lost 2 to SA and can't get Pakistani tailenders out. Yet somehow with this bowling they managed to win the last 2 Tests.

I would say out abysmal batting in the first innings of gabba got them the first win.

88 off the last 10 overs!

They should bat for another 30 mins and aim for 500.

No sense declaring if you are scoring at 7-8 RPO. Another 10-15 overs like this and they they could
be in with a chance of making Aus follow on. Yasir will enjoy this pitch.

Too bad rain is ruining this test match but incredible batting by Pakistan. Considering the conditions and the quality of bowlers Azhar has faced in this match, I think this is more impressive than his 302* vs WI.

Amazing job by Amir and Sohail as well scoring these crucial runs and doing it quick.

Small Sample Size but Great Stats for Azhar in Aus

Matches - 2
Innings - 3
Runs - 272
Ave - 136
100's - 1
50's - 1

Plus he's on the brink of a double hundred. Yet people thought Salman Butt would've done better! :)))

WTH happened here?!

I wake up from my sleep, decide to have a peek into my phone to see the score and go back to slumber again. I see Azhar has batted magnificently.

But bloody hell, Sohail is murdering Lyon out there.:)))

This is utter carnage.:))

People are assuming it wont rain again for 3 days but i am assuming we can count at least one session out of remaining 3 days lost to rain if not more.

Playing so well and then getting a moral victory (drawn match) is kind of useless.

Oh there is no debate about that this is a much better innings.

It was junaid, not sure where he is hiding right now...

Lyon got annihilated by sher khan.

the bowling did brilliantly against SA

The batting let them down

In the first 2 Tests that Australia lost, SA scored 242, 540/8 and 326. That is an average of 370 per innings (ignoring the declaration) I wouldn't call that "brilliantly".

Pakistan realistically now looking to bat first.
I wanna see how the aussies go: on so many tours of the past our team would be flogged like a dead cat and going off the ground completely shattered. The openers would come out all guns blazing, determined to take out all their anger on McGrath etc. we know how that story would end.
Well the shoe is on the other foot now.

Oh am I allowed to say how flat this pitch is or can we only say that when Indian batsmen do well here?

asides from 540 those are good efforts

what are you expecting? rolling opposition out for 200 every time?

in 2014 india were scoring quite a lot too but still ended up winless

Wow PakPassion has sprung alive after the hammering of the Aussies. So many people posting nice to see.

Lol Azhar Ali surpassing anything so called Pakistans GOAT Salman Butt has ever done in Australia. :))) :))) Junaids, you and MMHS thought he could outperform Azhar in these conditions how wrong were you both.

Are you sure about MMHS? :(

What sohail's half century.. Learn to respect t opposition..

In t mean time.. Lyon, bird and starc has made centuries..

With starc being t top scorer 117*

Our one tail Ender scored 50 and the opposition's 3 tail enders scored centuries

Haha...ghar ke starc, Lyon aur bird

Pakistan just went from having one of the worst tails in the world to one of the best in a space of few weeks.

Wonder what hair dresser treatment Mickey gave the boys after the NZ tour.:ma

He just made sure they did their homework every night :afridi

Azhar Ali Stats since 2014

Matches - 25

50's - 9
HS - 302*

Not expecting anything, only made an observation that recent Australian bowling (this and the previous series) is the weakest I have seen from Australia in Australia in Tests. If you compare their bowling to NZ bowling in their recent series against Pakistan (where Pakistan averaged 188 per innings over 4 innings), the comparison is quite unfavorable.

MMHS

Azhar Ali now averages 136.00 in Australia.

But sadly he isn't the GOAT yet as he doesn't have 500 runs there. :butt

Our tail went from having no punch to going at a run a ball. This is quite the surprise.

Syed1 was commentating so much in previous matches. Too bad he missed this entertainment. :D

I say Keep batting !

Keep smashing the Aussies and keep on demoralising them further.

Bat for 40 mins and get close or around 500 then declare.

After that Aussies will be really on the backfoot.

Man this is epic, I would say to hell with declaration, gin gin k badla lo aussies se last 3 white washes k atyachar ka, #NoMercy

If you have four frontline bowlers who can together plausibly average around 100-120,
perchance there is less need for that one 'proper allrounder' who does not yet exist?

Can Sohail get a hundred at MCG?

Poor fellow - comes from a remote corner of the country without much backing & robbed of a potential fantastic career, which even cost him few years in FC as well. I can recall, he had a tremendous debut in 2007 when he was officially 23, but he should have been into his 5th years of FC career by then.

He played few ODIs against us in 2008 or so - one of the players told me that Sohail was hitting the bat harder than most he had faced & that guy faced Lee & Shoaib, albeit at their late age. Since Arthur has joined, in just about 6/7 months the improvement I see in his cricket at this late age suggests he could have been a fantastic cricketer had he been a PAK regular from 2008-09 on wards.

The joke is on us. Sohail will be huffing and puffing before he has even bowled a ball now!

He was tiring at first but after he has just score his runs in boundaries and i think his morale will be high after this.

the conditions are different planets comparable to each other as well

and Pak batsmen are more adjusted now

he would have been shoaib akhtar if given pproper chances...iknow his story..he left home and has been to karachi for the love of cricket has been beaten by his father several times even he didnt talk to him for qite some time,,bro this is pakistan utter waste of talent..

Great batting by Pak. Give Azhar a few mins after lunch to get four more runs to complete his double ton. Then all we need to do is take twenty wickets. At the start of play wanted six Aussie wickets or more down by close of play. Still want that.

Oh Yeah I remember he ripped through the Sri Lankans but that was a good
performance cause it was in SL.
SL seem to struggle against lefties. First Junaid and now Starc. And who can forget mighty Rahat destroying SL. :rahat

Earlier on he was pretty quick also .

I do not understand why they do not play him in OD , he just has to bowl 10 overs . Also , he can easily slog , can be even used as a pinch hitter at 4 - 5 , just to throw something new at opposition

His position in Test team was never, never a question. MMHS was one of very few, who thought that Azhar's best position is actually opening, rather than No. 3 :( and had this pro not joined PAK set-up, still he would have been playing at 3 & MoHa would have trolled PAK cricket as opener in Kangaroo land.

However, Sulman's case is a bit different - any given day he is a far better opening choice in AUS than Sami & actually can bat at 5/6 there if required & still will easily out perform Misbah/YK. PAK doesn't have a lefti from 2 to 7, therefore it's not a bad idea to play him at 6 (if Sami is persisted with, which is fair enough for a young career), which will help managing the 2nd ball better than Sarfy.

However, as I posted in another thread - Salman is the worst PAK batsman over 25 innings in anywhere outside AUS/NZ (& PAK) with an average around 23, where PAK won't tour in 3+ years; therefore his boat has sailed past. I'll invest on Amin & if he can stand on his feet, Haris for future as a lefti in middle order is essential.
