Australia vs India | 4th Test | Sydney | Jan 3-7, 2019 | Day 1 Thread

As I said, India will be targeting 450 here.

India would want to score 550 if they can bat that long. India simply want to score as many runs as possible here. Game is drifting totally away from Aus. Last hope to keep it alive will be first 10-15 overs tomorrow.

My views are neutral. I am not sure why you guys want to make Starc, Hazlewood, and Cummins second coming of Malcolm Marshall, Courtly Amrose, and Courtney Walsh.

You didn't answer the question.

Is Lungi better than Starc, Hazlewood, and Cummins?

I guess if we score around 440-450 , the best Aus can hope for is to draw the Test .
Marnus inclusion at cost of Mitch who bowled well at MCG looks very silly now .

India aren't getting 550 here, we needed ashwin for that.

Great batting by Pujara and Mayank today . India need to get past 400 to get this match into their kitty . Well played

One more session of batting and then it will be very hard to beat India

Honest assessment - India have found a gem in Vihari. This is how we want Babar to play for us. IA he will live up to the expectations.

Phew! Good day for India in the end.Vihari has been a nice addition to this Indian team and crucial partnership between him and Pujara.

Really amazing how a guy averaging 28 in shield this season even gets picked in an international team.

Once Shaw and Gill are added to this squad this will become a gun unit. Shaw, Agarwal, Pujara, Kohli, Gill, Vihari, Pant, Bumrah, Shami, Ishant/Pandya, Jadeja/Ashwin/

Bro India is 303/4 :(

True, Looking hard for Aus here. Only hope is first 10-15 overs in morning now. Vihari is not letting go any hit me ball and he has added runs too quickly.

If we muck this up like Sydney 2004, I swear...

Good day for India ... Won the toss and made a score of 303/4 ... They should aim to bat as long as possible ... Another 100 runs at least will be good ...

Selectors have picked wrong batting unit and management has played wrong batting order.

Pujara deserves a double century

I think I deserve a triple century in international cricket, doesnt mean I will get one :ashwin its not about derserving or undeserving, if he bats well, he will get it, if he makes a mistake, he will lose his opportunity.

I don't know who is better, I do remember Lungi inflicting fear into Indian batsman more than Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins.

Nice dodge, Anyone can take wickets on green pitches, it's when you play on the not so helpful ones that proves your worth. Also only a Bangladeshi will ever choose ngidi over starc, hazlewood and Cummins.

Lol yea, didn't you guys get smashed by that trundler Stuart Binny. Your cobra dancers got absolutely belted in your last series in South Africa, it literally looked like South Africa vs Jalandhar canteen XI :vk2 Not to mention how the records were made in the test series in West Indies. If anyone who gets inflicted by fear in fast and bouncy bowling conditions, it has to be none other than :cobra

Batting talents are just oozing for India, BD should take some as a rent from them.

Many Indians were claiming the head of Pujara not a long time ago. But he has been a saviour in this series for India

Mayank
Vihari
Pujara :3cheers:

Kohli missed out :(

Rahul is useless, will be dropped in favor of Shaw. Rahane as usual is in-consistent. 450 should be good enough to out bat aussies

Not really. Our batsmen are 30% worse than from a decade ago. We can't have an opening partnership of over 50, and our keeper batting at #7 doesn't seem to get past 30. Rahane has been shaky for 2 years now, and we have to pick Rohit Sharma of all people to shore things up.

Our bowling has improved by leaps and bounds, however.

Pujara has a great chance of eclipsing Tendulkar's 241*.

That was my dream to pick 20 wkts regularly overseas, i am alive to see to it :D

Didn't know Vihari could be this fluent. Looked very good and should be a regular number 5/6.

Except when Rohit Sharma has to be accommodated at the cozy position of #6 and Vihari has to be the sacrificial lamb at the top of the order. ::J

Meanwhile, our other ODI opener - Dhawan - if and when he plays tests, he opens every single time.

Rohit opens only for India in LoI though, he doesn't open for MI never did for Mumbai, Dhawan on the other hand is an opener plays there for every team he plays for.

Dude, you are way too pessimistic.

Openers - Agarwal is a good find. He has done well against a gun bowling attack. Shaw + Agarwal have the potential to be a solid opening duo. We need to find a good backup though, in order to not rely on Vijay and Dhawan. Was hoping KL Rahul will step up here, but we might need to look elsewhere for the time being. I still feel if Rahul can go back to Ranji, he can fix his deficiencies.

Middle order - Rahane is pretty inconsistent. Gill would probably be a part of the Indian team next winter if he has a good start to 2019-20 Ranji season. If we can find another backup for the middle order, again we will have a solid middle order.

WK - Give some time for our keeper. The lad has not even played 10 tests. He did pretty well in the last match by curbing his natural instincts. Lets see if he can play proper cricket in the next few series. Hopefully Samson can become a backup rather than relying on the likes of Patel.

We will never go back to the days of Sehwag, Gambhir, Dravid, Sachin, Laxman, Ganguly (though and Ganguly and Gambhir didnt play much together). That was one of the greatest batting lineups in the history. 3 ATGs + India Great + 1 Clutch Opener.

But, we can come near. Its not all doom and gloom.

Absolutely. As a fellow Bangalorean, i've supported him a lot. But he just can't justify a spot at the moment. Shaw comes back to partner Mayank. Rahul needs to score runs on A tours heavily to stake his claim. Really disappointed in him to be honest. I do think Rahane needs to be dropped as well.

Don't think we will batting that long. Reach 500 and declare i think.

Too early to think of a declaration. First order of business is to not lose, and thereby win the series for the very first time in Australia. India has already won series in England and WI 47 years ago, the last remaining bastion is Australia. Due to the large gaps in playing SA and Pakistan, wins there do not carry the same significance.

On second thought, you're right. Just bat and bat and bat as long as possible.

Well we won in Pakistan in 2004.

No declaration needed in this test. Scoring rate is decent. We should bat on as long as we can.

Either we will be all out for 440 or declared at 500. Aussies can still win if they score fast in 1st innings and trigger a collapse next up on us.

Well we won in Pakistan in 2004.

My point was that if we had played Pakistan in Pakistan during the mid-60s to mid-70s interregnum we would probably have won given the relative strengths of the teams during that period. That is the reason we had to wait for 50 years to win in Pakistan. We have no similar excuse for not winning in Australia till now, so a series win now will be special.

The team that beat WI and England at their home may also have won against SA.

Congrats India on 1st series win in Australia, they should get 400+ here. Flat wicket or not the Aussies batting is feeble and wont get close to what ever 1st inns total India puts up.Aussies cant wait to get warner, smith and bancroft back soon enough.

India have played excellent cricket all series and havent chocked in crucial situations like they did in SA and Eng. With there batsmen tending to score well in Australia this was always a series they should have fancied their chances in.

If they are not dismissed, India would definitely bat till tea. 60 overs are more than enough for Pujara to add another hundred here.

Indian fans made it a thing when I pointed out this team was poor. I've been watching Australian summer the last ~15 years and it was shocking how bad the batting was. I would have dropped it at that, but they've come at me and tried to play up the series win and accomplishment.

If your time period is 15 years, the current Indian batting is pretty poor too. Compare the current Indian team to the one that scored 705/7d Sydney 2004.

The strengths of teams vary with time. India can only beat what is in front of them.

Vihari will live up to the expectations if he is persisted with in the no 5 or no 6 position.
I wonder what Kohli/Shatri were smoking when they decided to make him opener in Melbourne.

Good to see mayank and vihari giving the team what it lacks - stability.
And that too in a space of 3-4 tests put together.

They are already playing as if they are 10-15 tests old.
I believe that is the result of their hard work and the first-class system in India.

Good for them.
Now, if only we can find another good opener - for any backup like what happened to shaw.

Rahane - I think is on reserve oil now, that is almost over.
I hope gill or someone form the first class system could be chipped in after the world cup.

The team would then be all set.

It won India the match. He blunted the new ball and allowed Pujara and Kohli to cash in.

Strategic move for short term.

It was a good move.

India is accused here for winning the toss and winning the series! Certain claim that modern day test cricket is won based on toss doesn't seem to hold good for certain team elsewhere (any new excuse?) Also teams are not winning with any kind of toss result coming to India!

Strategic move for short term.

It was a good move.

I guess it gave him immense confidence and made him feel like he is integral part of this team! You should not always look at the negatives (affecting his average perhaps???) that's not the way you play for your team!

He will be such an asset for the team if he continues! He can play that 2nd spinner role overseas & 3rd/4th spinner role at home. More importantly we can sparingly use Pandya in tests (only if he is very much required - absolute greentops), else we can safely play him & 3rd seamer! (He can be a superior version of Jayant Yadav!)

Needed to play someone there better than Rahul/Vijay

Ashwin has been very poor with bat lately.More chance with Jadeja

Its not just about the runs, Vihari in the last game as an opener did not score much more than rahul has yet his knock was very important for India in the first innings, Ashwin doesn't throw his wicket away trying to play t20, as we found out in the first test that is a very important skill to possess.

Our spinners hold the key to this match . I expect our 1st inning total to be in 440-450 range .

India need to bat Australia out of this game. If they have wickets in hand, they need to bat at least thru an hour tomorrow and score close to 650. This pitch will become very good for batting 3rd and 4th day so they should be in no hurry to declare. Also it's on Australia to go for a result.

I have high hopes ok medium hopes with Pant. If he continues with his usual 35-38 or more with Pujara/Vihari, India should put up a good total. Declaring before 500 is no bueno.

I salute your high expectations.

Two quick wickets tomorrow could well see India bowled out for 330 given the way the tail has been failing.

I expect India will end their innings around 400-410.
Anything above 300 is a bonus now.

And they should also remember their loose batting in the 2nd innings of the last match which briefly gave hopes to Aus.

And as for bowling I expect, yadav to take more wickets than jadeja.
And bumrah and shami will do the attacking roles.
Also, vihari could be useful on this pitch.

Been wanting thins since 1991 when Boon, Marsh, Border and Taylor ran us into the ground. Can't forget the chubby guy with beer belly in baggy green sweeping us out of the game.
If Pujara can stick in there it can be achieved, the pitch looks very flat.
