Several members of Australia's under-19 World Cup cricket squad face sanctions for comments on social media that have been branded casual racism.

Cricket Australia's head of integrity and security Sean Carroll has spoken with those players who recently posted broken-English responses to an Instagram post from teammate Jake Fraser-McGurk.

Oliver Davies, Liam Scott, Lachlan Hearne, Sam Fanning and Tanveer Sangha were among those who posted remarks Carroll admits "could be interpreted as ridiculing non-native English language speakers".

Carroll made it clear the conduct was unacceptable while probing the matter and speaking with every player involved.

CA, recognising that some of the players are minors and that most do not have their parents with them in South Africa, will fully address the matter when the squad returns home.

"We are extremely disappointed that some of the Australian under-19 squad members have used inappropriate language in posts on social media, which we reported to the ICC as soon as it came to our attention," Carroll said in a statement.

"I have spoken to the players this morning and expressed in no uncertain terms that such language has no place in society and falls well short of the standards we expect as Australian cricketers.

"The players have apologised for the language and have taken down the posts."

The social-media gaffe follows a bizarre setback for Fraser-McGurk, who was sent home from the World Cup after a monkey scratched his face.

Australia lost their quarter-final against India early on Wednesday (AEDT) but have two more matches to play to determine their ranking at the next under-19 World Cup.

Ridiculous to sanction the players, people are getting far too sensitive to everything.

It’s just some kids having fun. Flipping hell.

Where do they mention any non-native speakers or any nationality for that matter?

If you do this in a work place you will be fired immediately. Making fun of someone’s accent and is racism. It demeans people

Casual racism is serious issue.

But these are kids. They don't know better.

This is not even offensive lmao. The SJWs are hellbent on making everything offensive these days aren't they?

What about indian players casually making fun of Pakistani players English?

Lachlan Hearne's face when he got yorked by Tyagi for a golden duck was hilarious. If you wanna talk **** atleast back it up with skills

I blame Indian U19 players for this. Are they too embarrassed to speak in their own language? Why do they try to speak in English when it’s not their stronghold?

You are right, everyone must be proud of their country, Language and heritage,
Look at Messis interview and match presentation I never saw him speaking in English,This is just an example I gave.
Babar Azam is another example.

Read the messages. They are not mocking interviews. Aussie kids are mocking how Indian kids speak to Senior cricketers or international cricketers.

Victim blaming is bad.

Read my post above.

Indians are way to sensitive wow

It's just them making some jokes and it's not even racist everyone jokes about non native speakers , their making something out of nothing. On top of that player t sangha is of Indian background lol

Hmmm, so if an Indian player wrote a post to make fun of Aussies by mocking Aussie english then it would have been fine?

Why do players do interviewS in a language they dont feel comfortable in?

Aussie youngsters are making fun of Indian players speaking bad English when conversing with native English speakers. Not the interviews.

Racism is bad.

Indians need to take these things lightly. I see no Pakistanis being triggered on such trivial things.

This is great banter. I absolutely love it.

Sensitive Indians can't take a joke but as mentioned by minamino, they have no problem mocking the English spoken by Pakistan's cricketers.

They're actually probably making fun of Indian people that follow them on Instagram and make the same sort of comments on their posts. All these players probably have more followers from India than Australia :))

But which sensitive Indian was triggered by this?

Quite possible.

Some freshie obviously got butt hurt and made a complaint about this.

Probably. But I don't think majority of us even noticed this to be honest. Also I don't think Indian players ever made fun of Pakistanis unable to speak good English or anything .

No they are not. They are mocking the comments they get on social media from Indians. Nothing to do with Indian players.

I can see how the Aussie kids might have found it funny, even I did. It is a fine line. I felt that they were casually mocking non-English speakers for their ability/accent and didn't have any sinister racist ideas. But Racism is bad, however casual it may seem. Better to stay away from posting such things in public.

A fine line. :)) :smith

The same guys will change their town 4-5 years later when they are offered lucrative IPL deals

Lol the Aussies can do what they want off the field but they were comfortably crushed on the field.

I have seen interviews from Indian U19 players. Some players are trying hard to speak English especially when its not their stronghold. I like the captain though, He speaks in Hindi and have the coach as the translator.

people make too much noises about english speaking. Just because you try to speak english, doesn't mean you are trying to cut your roots.

Just because you are trying to build a relationship with your wife, doesn't mean you want to cut ties away from your mother.

If i am speaking with someone who has no clues about local languages, however broken may be, i'll try to speak them with a little bit of english. That's called human courtesy.

I remember when i was in ukraine, i didn't get a hold of russian language. When the shopkeepers did try to speak with a little bit of broken english, it was very helpful.

People are too insecure now a days.

I know it is not a big deal. But off the field you shouldn't be mocking fellow cricketers for their language proficiency. Not in good taste. You can do if you are really good friends with them and he doesn't mind. It is petty, childish. Part of the bullying culture. Stop giving pass to tasteless behaviors. I would say the same if an Indian cricketer insults another cricketer off field.

English is the link language for many countries. There is nothing wrong in attempting to speak.

They were not making fun of Indian players. But the SM users (mostly South Asian) who comment like that on posts with broken English. Honestly can't see what the fuss is about. They're kids. As usual, cricket Australia being overly harsh on it's players.

They are not being harsh. ACB have been under severe scrutiny since the sandpaper incident and therefore have done their level best to ensure that they change this negative image in the world. Players like Warner have given them a bad name so this isnt going to be helpful at all. Why do Kids (18 years old are adults btw) think its ok to make fun of people's english when they are supposed to be role models of the future?

How cringey and what an unethical thing to do.
Regardless of the fact that Indians do make fun of Pakistani cricketers and their broken English and their are full compilations on Youtube with comments in poor taste down below, fact of the matter is that two wrongs dont make a right.

Nobody has any right to make fun of how someone else speaks. If they should attempt to speak English or not is another debate but making fun of other people and their verbal skills is just crass and unethical. And especially since they are entering the professional world it was important to teach these youngsters a lesson.

Insensitive? Yea.

Racist? No.

Unless they’ve changed the meaning of racist this past decade to cater to the hypersensitive triggering types, not everything insensitive is racist.

They are just setting an example. They are representing ACB. They expect you to meet a certain standard.

Stop defending any level of bullying. If it were done in school it would definitely be bullying. Show all your aggression on the field.

Exactly. So many people are missing this. You go to any cricketer's IG or twitter page and it is filled with comments like 'Sir u r fntstic player...i big fan' from social media users from South Asia. They are just having a bit of harmless fun with this. It has nothing to do with any interviews or the English-speaking abilities of other players.

Where is any mention of race in their posts. People like you try to bring out the race card in everything and play the victim.

These tough boys have disabled their comments on Instagram

Whilst I may vehemently disagree with Indian posters on this forum on cricketing matters and some of their uncalled for arrogance on certain topics, one thing I cannot tolerate is the racist, derogatory abuse or sly remarks that are made against Indians in regards to their culture, language and traditions by Western and Anglophone elitists at any level. These same snobs would not stop in their self entitlement when it comes to abusing Pakistanis, Bangladeshis also.

No need to tell Indians to grow thick skin here.

Bro, the other day Warne said he didnt like to tour Pakistan, and posters here got angry and all they posted was how hes a gambler and what not

people forgets what's the purpose of language? it's just a tool to communicate, doesn't matter it's broken or not..

People who speak one language should not ridicule those who speak English as a third or fourth language. Not sure why Pakistanis here are defending them even though they are often at the receiving end of such racism as well.

Fanning got 2 demerit points too for elbowing an Indian player.

They are clearly naive . They can joke about it but probably best not to do it on social media as some people have got offended.

was funny when tyagi sledged them all and wrecked them. Taunted them too.

but aussies speak one language mate. Can you speak their language?

They are kids alright but they are also representatives of their country at an international event. Its good to impart some manners to these brats! Also in the context, it was great to see them great owned by the non-native English speakers.

They are not “kids”. They are adults who are representing their country in an international event and need to handle themselves with responsibility.

When it comes to other facets of life, they are definitely not “kids”. I don’t see anyone of them sucking their thumbs.

Definitely. Compared to say 20 to 30 years back they are expected to be more matured at this age.

Blown out of the proportion. But this is between ACB and it's players. Indians shouldn't complain as we will be the first one to ridicule if someone is speaking funny in our native languages.

What matters is Indian U19 hammered this Australian team and sent them packing home.

It’s so obvious that Indians are trying to make this seem like they were referring to all south asians not just Indians so the offence they felt can decrease.

I don’t think every South Asian says “i want to play for India sir”
Only Indians say that

Ofcourse they're referring to all South Asians?

Foreigners often club all South Asians under "Indian" as they don't bother remembering the names of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal etc. Posters living in the US, UK, Canada and Australia can relate.

Why does it matter? South Asians or Indians.. They would be flocking to play IPL , am sure in future there would be an article which says how sorry he or one of em was/were for being stupid and young and now that he sees love of Indian public for cricket.. you know typical PR nonsense..

What was their post about?
Their QF against India not Pakistan, Aus, BD etc.
They’re international players. They know the difference

I know you don’t want to accept that they were only talking about Indians but living in denial isn’t gonna help you

Let them have fun, Who cares what they say on social media, we answered on the field.
Which is what matters most.

I think posters are trying to equate the rubbish spewn by Indian trolls on social media to what Australian Under 19 players did. That's false equivalence. I'd like to see some evidence than any Indian player , either from age group or otherwise , did this and then we can have a reasonable discussion. Hardly any Indian has complained about this and except a few cricket nerds like us on cricket forums, very few are even aware of this tournament . CA took this decision on their own and good on them for setting a precedent. You can't have those representing your country talking the same rubbish that random social media posters do. It's also the reason why BCCI banned Hardik for a while . Don't see what the problem is
