Having ensured an emphatic victory in just over 10 overs in the first Twenty20 International, the Windies will look to lock up the series against hosts Bangladesh, for whom it becomes a must-win game in Mirpur.
Overview
Bangladesh v Windies
2nd T20I
Sher-e-Bangla International Cricket Stadium, Mirpur
Thursday, 20 December, 17:00 local
The Windies chased down their target of 130 runs in just 10.5 overs with eight wickets in hand, courtesy of Shai Hope's 23-ball 55. Hope is the man with a golden touch in this series: he scored two centuries in the one-day internationals that preceded this T20Is.
And quick cameos from Nicholas Pooran (23 off 17) and Keemo Paul (28 off 14) saw to it that the Windies finished with a thumping win, scoring at a rate of 12 runs per over. But the platform for such an onslaught was set by the bowlers.
Sheldon Cottrell, chosen Player of the Match for this performance, picked up 4/28 to break the back of the Bangladeshi batting. He was well supported by Oshane Thomas, captain Carlos Brathwaite and Fabian Allen, all of whom picked up a wicket each. Paul got two wickets.
It was a dream day for the visitors but it came at the cost of the hosts, who not only were taken for runs aplenty but also had nobody except captain Shakib Al Hasan (61 off 43) make a score of significance.
Only three batsman could get to double-digit scores and Bangladesh lost four wickets within the Powerplay. Mahmudullah and Ariful Haque put up little partnerships with Hasan but those were not enough.
Improvements on the batting and bowling fronts are needed as four of the six bowlers used by Bangladesh in the last match conceded in excess of 10 runs per over. Returning to their fortress in Dhaka is likely to help the team stage a comeback, but it won't be easy against an in-form Windies.
Players to watch
Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh): He was the most significant contributor with the bat in the first game and will look to do the same again. Some wickets – he went wicket-less in the first match – will also help his cause and make him a deciding factor in the match.
Shai Hope (Windies): Hope is going through a purple patch ever since the tour to India earlier this year. He will want to finish the last few games of the year on a high and help his team to a series-clinching win.
Conditions
A bright, sunny day with temperatures ranging between 26 and 15°C is expected in Dhaka. The last T20I played at the venue was between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in February 2018 where both teams scored in excess of 190 runs. A high-scoring affair may be expected.
Squads
Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan (c), Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Liton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah, Rubel Hossain, Mehidy Hasan, Nazmul Islam, Mohammad Mithun, Mohammad Saifuddin, Abu Hider Rony, Ariful Haque, Mustafizur Rahman
