Australia captain Steve Smith says he is surprised by the comments from the Bangladesh camp about a 2-0 series victory.

Smith was asked whether he found it surprising that some of the Bangladesh players and even the coach had mentioned a 2-0 series victory in favour of Bangladesh.

Smith said: “It’s pretty confident, isn’t it?"

Smith, who as the Australia captain is not a rookie when it comes to mind games, said that Tigers must be a very confident team right now to come out and say that.

“I think Bangladesh have only won nine of their 100 games so it’s very confident.

“Look, they are obviously confident about their skillset at the moment. They are at home and most teams play well at home and Bangladesh have been playing well at home, so it’s going to be a good challenge for us."

Smith also talked about his counterpart Mushfiqur Rahim and said: "I have not played a lot against Mushfiqur as a captain but I think he has improved a lot in the last couple of years in his game.

"He has scored some valuable runs for Bangladesh. I think he will be looking forward to playing this series against Australia."

Bit harsh hate, you only won around 20 more then BD in your first 100 and you kept playing the same team :yk

It's also worth pointing out that BD won these 9 tests in their first 18 years having gained Test status.

Australia in their first 20 years only won about 14 tests :broad

He wasn't being rude.

He was commenting on Bangladesh's (over-)confident predictions of a 2-0 whitewash.

I hope Australia wins and see Bangladesh demoted to Division 2 cricket, because their sportmanship and lack of humility when they haven't achieved anything is just cringe worthy and pathetic really.

Some Bengalis on here also have the nerve to make idiotic statements such as BPL is better than PSL, BCB is doing better than PCB, Bangladesh's team are better than Pakistan cricket... yeah in your dreams. Win an ICC trophy or win a test in one of Aus/NZ/SA/Eng before you can start talking.

Simple message learn to walk before you can run. Learn to not talk when you can't walk.

Bangladesh beat Kohli team 3-0 after Kholi's hate speech. Now is it Aussie possie turn?

you may have confused India with Pakistan.

India have never been white washed (bangla wash) by BD.

On topic, I think Australia have better chances of winning the series if rain doesnt interrupt.

Bang on target Steve Smith.
They have already made a statement, now Australia has to make sure that it does not loose any test against Bangladesh.

Agree with Smith, Bangladesh are pretty confident despite not achieving much in their existence as a Test country thus far.

However, I still expect this to be a competitive series with the scoreline possibly ranging from a win to either side or a series draw.

It's a mind game out there.

This series has had greater build up than anything I have ever seen. Infact quite exciting isn't it.

Bangladesh will be wary about the pace of Hazelwood and Cummins while Australia will be worried about Miraz and Taijul.

Gonna be a great contest thjs. Our players confident because we did well against SL and England at home.

As a comparison India won only 10 out of their first 100 tests.

Pak 19, Sri Lanka 18

Aussie mind games... shakib: we are the unbeatable at home... smith: u only won 9 out of 100... normal banter before the series. Best tactics would be to get some quick runs with the bangla quicks with the new ball. Bangla spinners capable of bowling good to aussies on those super slow tracks.

Mental disintegration.

It will not be a cake walk for the aussies. BD spinners are fully capable of spinning a web around Aust in home conditions.
Its going to be hard work out there for aust. Plus aust players are coming in off season amd havent played for months. And had no practice match either. BD has a good chance to take the first test atleast

and how many tests has australia won in asia in the last decade or so? :)))

Yes you lost 2-1. Congratulations, that's so much better.

This thread is about test cricket, when did bangladesh win 2 test matches against India? Forget about that when did bangladesh win even a single test against India? Forget even that when did bangladesh beat Kohli's team 2-1 even in odis? Dhoni was the captain, so in which dream did bangladesh beat kohli's team 2-1?

Yeah I'm surprised where all this over confidence comes from, maybe it is to overcompensate for all those harrowing losses. Smith is right to point out the stats however bangladesh might have a good chance of beating them at home however I do feel aussies will put up a good fight.

And most of those wins came against Zimbabwe. Other test teams' wins came against established test teams. The arrogance of some of the Bangladeshi players and fans really makes one wish they lose at the scoreline they think they will win at.

"For us, it's more looking to the future. Ashton has obviously been on the radar for a long time and someone we see as having a pretty bright future. Four years' time back in India it's something I want to achieve while I'm captain. I want to win in India, that's big on my bucket list."

Steve Smith before test match against Bangladesh. Clearly he is using this series as testing bench strength for future series against India. Smith is clearly talking about series win in India and totally ignoring Bangladesh. Overconfident much??

Smith and co are confident. Our seniors are confident.

A lot of Aussie experts like Dean Jones have put BD ahead

But only 25 minutes to go and we will get to know on the pitch

Btw, what's this "Kohli hate speech" against Bangladesh that a poster is claiming about? This is news for me!!

India won 19 out of first 100 games now the best team in the world. Difference is back then India played in an era where other nations where finding its feet.

BD debuted when cricket was at its absolute peak. Only Zimbabwe was a mediocre side in the 00s. Everyone else was quality. Even wi had Lara and Shiv

Also we were given test status quite early. 5 years earlier than expected but the purpose was to ensure BD gets more cricket and it helped but the rewards are recieved after a while as it usually does.

Lanka in the sense did well but they were lucky to unearth some world class talents and Bangladesh didn't.

I think this excuse has gone far enough. Now its time to put up or shutup. Sri Lanka acquired test status in 82 and 14 years later they won the world cup and became a pretty good side in test cricket not long after. Bangla has had 17 years and they haven't yet acquired anything let alone a worldcup. Hope this series proves me wrong but really for now, its all talk no show from Bangladesh

South Africa and NZ won no world cup either when Lanka did. It's a matter of luck sometimes getting good players and winning tournaments.

What's Lanka's excuse for not winning a single ODI series at their home for some 2-3 years?

Back to topic, we might get our win tally to 11 in a few weeks if Australia does what they did in half an hour

The kiwis have atleast won CT. South Africa lost the test mace not that long ago. They've been playing competitive cricket. Reaching finals, semifinals of tournaments atleast. Bangladesh needs to step up.

Lanka is on the downfall now. That's no secret. But atleast they had a decent run on top from late 90s to 2011.
Barring Zimbabwe all teams have had some level of success in their history. Bangladesh has not.

I doubt that is just about luck. Just simply not good enough.

Great stuff by Bangladesh. Thought they'd give Aussies trouble. Australia with their current team are just awful playing spin in asian conditions/spin friendly conditions. With the exception of Smith. And the type of pitches that will be played will probably negate the strength of Australia's pacers a bit too.

You do realize we haven't reached our peak yet?

We were given test status 5 years too early. We only had a proper FC structure after 2011 WC.

Zimbabwe never played a quarter final or semi final of ICC events if I am not mistaken. We did.

Yes we just weren't good enough. But things are changing. We are starting to be competitive at home in all formats

BD are still not good enough.

You lack consistency. One day BD will play well and next day, they will play like a minnows.

The ups and downs of the graph is too big difference to promote BD from the bracket that it is in.

I thought we were playing pretty consistent. True our CT performance wasn't too convincing. But otherwise we have done quite well lately.

We are not minnows but not a big team either. Minnows is something your label teams like Zimbabwe and Afghanistan as. If you want to label us as minnows then so SL and WI are minnows too

Bangladesh has recently improved in tests. However, overall they have been abysmal. In shorter formats, they have shown massive improvements.

Yes they have. They've achieved more and better players than what Bangladesh have to date.

It's fine - before a series, he is trying to rile up opponents. Smith is an honest block, never shy of verbal confrontation, but I do respect him - not many'll say in press briefing that I am feeling embarrassed to stand & talk in front of you (as AUS Captain). He'll compete till end - it doesn't matter if it ends 2-0 or 0-2.

They are formidable team at home. Away from home they are still pretty weak. Test again India was so onesided that it felt it was against minnow.

But they are improving and at home against non asian teams they can be challenging opponents. Im glad Bangladesh is proving to be a fortress for non asian teams. With Sri Lanka in decline, rise of Bangladesh is much needed.

Which world cup was it? I know Kenya did play a QF which NZ forfeited.

And Zimbabwe did come up with big players. Like streak and Andy flower. But since 03 it's been a rapid decline. Right know we too have some world class players. Tamim Shakib mushy Riad are quite good. The others have supported them

I am not sure how Australia can come back in this game. The scars from SL series are still there. BD can exploit their weakness against spin to the hilt. Smith has to stand up or else they are doomed.

Mahmudullah is a mediocre batsman, the rest I agree

^^
Kenya actually reached SF and were knocked out by India in 2003. It was fluke if u ask me.

88 runs ahead with 9 wickets left. Their best chance to win a Test match against Australia in 10+ years.

Bangladesh seem to be growing into a genuinely good side at home.

apart from india and pakistan I don't think any team can win a test series in bangladesh at the moment

Probably not the best thread to discuss ZIM, but I don't understand why people bother to take chances when probably lesser time spent on search can give them facts.

Here is in short ZIM's history in ICC events (those I can recall, not worthy of searching)

1983 WC - lost 5 out of 6, but did beat AUS in their debut match (& caught IND off guard at 17/5 at one stage)
1987 - lost all 6 matches, but produced the best innings of the tournament - Houghton made 139 (?) out of 239 or so & took ZIM to 3 runs of NZ, with last 3 wickets adding close to 170.

1992 - lost every match (or may be one wash out); but won the most dramatic last match - defended 134 against Poms. However, Poms already qualified as 2nd team for SF (& knew they'll face SAF) might have taken that target easily & Chicken farmer Brandes ran through top order for something like 5/21.

1996 - no memory, probably won against Kenya.

1999 - their best result so far. Made the super Six at the end corner of ENG (SAF & IND were other 2 of the group). Oblonga defended 2 runs in last over against IND & qualified for S6, by beating SAF in last group match.

2003 - no memory - probably beaten Netherlands & PAK match was washed out.

2007 - lost all 3 group matches, including one against IRL

2011 & 2015 is recent memory so, probably most are aware.

Can't recall if ever they made the ICC KO/Champions Trophy.

Australia will have to play really well to avoid Bangladesh getting into the double digits of Test victories.

Bangladesh batsmen (apart from Tamim & Mushy) don't have the temperament to play long innings.
