How is Mehdi Maruf a foreign player? Just in case I’m totally oblivious to BD cricket setup.

Good to see Aamir yamin may get some cricket. He was wasted by Aaqib Javed warming up the bench in PSL3.

Smith makes a move after cricket snub

BANGLADESH Premier League side Comilla Victorians has announced the signing of former Australian captain Steve Smith for the upcoming edition of the Twenty20 tournament.

Victorians coach Mohammad Salahuddin told AFP that Smith would join the team mid-January for the second phase of the BPL as a replacement for Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.

"He will come after (the) first four matches in (the) Dhaka phase and join the team in (the northeastern city of) Sylhet," he said.

"Shoaib Malik won't be able to play for the whole tournament. He will play in the first round and Steve will join after that."

Australia's ex-vice captain David Warner will also play in the BPL - which runs from January 5 to February 8, 2019 - having signed for the Sylhet Sixers.

Smith and Warner were handed year-long international bans for their roles in a ball-tampering scandal that rocked Australian cricket in March, while teammate Cameron Bancroft was given a nine-month suspension.

Steve Smith was roped in as the replacement of all-rounder Shoaib Malik, who is set to leave Comilla Victorians midway through the tournament for Pakistan’s series against New Zealand

Former Australia captain Steven Smith has been denied participation in the forthcoming Bangladesh Premier League T20.

Smith was included in the Comilla Victorians squad after an agreement with the Australian and the franchise, but the governing body disallowed the move after other franchises protested the breach of rules in the agreement.

A meeting between the BPL governing council and representatives of the franchises took place at the BCB headquarters at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka earlier in December, and the Smith issue was one of the main agendas.

“The technical committee meeting was held due to the unusual situation. We thought a world-class player like Smith would add spark to the tournament. The BPL’s image would also be enhanced in the international arena. But representatives of the seven franchises sat for a meeting after the opposition was voiced regarding his (Smith) inclusion. After the opposition was raised, the situation has turned complicated. The technical committee provided the franchises the opportunity of a further addition of a player outside the draft. But since most of the franchises did not agree to this, the issue was forwarded to the board. Now the board will have the final say on the Smith issue,” said Jalal Younus, chairman of the BPL technical committee.

One-time BPL champion Comilla created quite a buzz in November this year in the Bangladesh cricket fraternity with the inclusion of middle-order batsman Smith for the sixth edition of the BPL T20.

The Australian cricketer was roped in as the replacement of all-rounder Shoaib Malik, who is set to leave Comilla midway through the tournament for Pakistan’s series against New Zealand.

The BPL governing council had allowed the inclusion of Smith by tweaking the regulations, believing the appearance of the Australian cricketer would add additional colours to the competition.

However, the decision soon faced a written objection from Rangpur Riders, along with majority of the franchises, following which the BPL governing council took a step backwards from the decision, and made the inclusion of Smith for the upcoming season void.

BPL definitely attracting some big names. Heck, guys like Tahir, Morkel, Babar, Badree and many more have not even been picked in the draft.

But i think it will be a low key BPL particularly because the World Cup is around the corner.

Excited to see Warner play for Sixers. This year Sylhet has got a good side. Wish more matches were played in Sylhet stadium, as last years best round was at Sylhet.

The Bangladesh Premier League starts this weekend with bad boy Australians Steve Smith and David Warner among foreign stars tempted by top-notch salaries that have made the BPL a leading Twenty20 tournament.

The two, who are serving 12 month international bans for ball tampering, will clash when Warner leads the Sylhet Sixers against Smith’s Comilla Victorians in Dhaka on Sunday.

Warner said the BPL is now “amongst the best”.

South African big hitter AB de Villiers with West Indies’ Chris Gayle and England’s Alex Hales will be playing for defending champions Rangpur Riders.

The league had feared an exodus to the rival Australian Big Bash League. Afghan leg-spin star Rashid Khan, New Zealand batsman Brendon McCullum and England’s Jos Buttler all played in the BPL last year but chose the Big Bash this time.

But de Villiers and Nepalese spinner Sandeep Lamichhane — who will be in Warner’s team — are leaving the Big Bash to take part in the BPL. The Bangladesh tournament finishes February 8 which enables them to return to Australia if needed.

Gayle has become a BPL fixture in recent years, hitting a world record 18 sixes in his 69-ball 146 for Rangpur in last season’s final. But with each team allowed nine foreigners, compared to two for the Big Bash, there is a huge migrant contingent.

- No cap salary -

West Indians Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Carlos Brathwaite, Evin Lewis and Sheldon Cottrell, Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik and England’s Ian Bell are among other top names appearing for the seven teams.

The salary cap for draft players is $200,000 but most of the foreigners negotiated non-draft individual deals for which there is no limit. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has not given details of payments.

The winners of the event will get just $240,000 in prize money, but much more in commercial fallout and prestige. So most of the teams have been spending big.

The presence of Smith and Warner, banned from internationals and Australian domestic cricket after admitting ball tampering in the South Africa-Australia test last March, has been a major draw however.

“You look at the names in some of the other teams. They are not just here to watch me. I am just excited to be here and be a part of it,” said Warner.

“At the moment, the BPL is starting against the BBL, at home. After this you have the Pakistan Super League and Indian Premier League.

“Most players tell me that this is definitely up there with the best,” he added.

Former Sri Lankan batsman Mahela Jayawardene, who will coach Khulna Titans echoed Warner.

“It is good for BPL to get all the good players. It is also good for the younger Bangladeshi players to play with those guys, to learn a lot,” he said

High-profile coaches such as Australia’s Tom Moody, Pakistan’s Waqar Younis and South Africa’s Lance Kluesener have also been drawn.

Moody and Waqar will coach Rangpur Riders and Sylhet Sixers respectively while Klusener will coach Rajshahi Kings. “It is great to have world-class players” in the BPL, said Moody.

Bangladesh batsman Mushfiqur Rahim said the presence of the foreign stars brought prestige to the poor nation but also helped develop young home players.

“It gives them the opportunity to learn,” he said.

The BPL was dogged by match-fixing scandals and delayed pay for some foreign players after it started in 2011. After a one-year suspension in 2015 it has been staged without serious controversy.

Former South Africa batsman Hashim Amla will join Khulna Tigers on Tuesday and is expected to feature in the ongoing Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BBPL) from the upcoming Sylhet phase.

"Amla will arrive tomorrow. He will be available from the next game. Meanwhile, Pakistan's pace-bowling all-rounder Aamer Yamin will also join the squad." informed Khulna Tigers' media manager Nafees Iqbal to The Daily Star today.

This is the first time Amla will be playing in BPL. The 36-year-old retired from international cricket in August 2019 and has been playing in different franchisee based cricket tournaments all over the world since then.

Meanwhile, injured Dhaka Platoon all-rounder Shahid Afridi has left the squad and returned to Pakistan. Another Dhaka all-rounder, Thisara Perera has also left.

Pakistan batsman Ahmed Shehzad and all-rounder Faheem Ashraf have joined Dhaka to replace the two all-rounders.
