Decided to ask the PP Batting Experts here, what's a good bat for somebody looking for the following:

A 2 lb 7.5 oz - 2 lb 9 oz weight, light pickup, and lowish sweet spot?

I was looking at the Kookaburra bats, but wasn't sure which one I should go for.

First of all, whats your budget? Are you solely focussing on a specific brand?

I am not into Kookaburra bats but I think Blade and Kahuna have lowish sweetspot.

Sometime it is difficult to get light pickup in lowish sweetspot bats as the further the mass is from your hands (handle) the heavier it is for you. However, a skilled bat maker (for example Tim Keeley) they can make low sweetspot bats in ultralight pickup.

And I'm not focusing on a specific brand, however, I have used the Sarfi and Zulfi from MB Malik in the past, and I felt whenever I hit the ball off the middle, it didn't race off the bat as well as I would have liked or thought it should.

So I was thinking perhaps Kookaburra would be a good option, although I'm open to any recommendations

For that budget, you can get a pretty decent bat.....

If looking for a Pakistani bat, you can't go wrong with CA12000 OR MB Bubber Sher LE. I am not too familiar with Indian bats but I am sure SS and BAS are up there too.

If you add another $20-$30, you can probably get Newbery. A few people on this forum will attest to the performance of this make.

I like to stay away from Kookaburra as there are a lot of fakes out there.

I personally would go for the value rather than the name.

I agree with xkalibur bhai!

Personally I dont recommend big brands bat (such as Kookaburra, G&M, Gray Nicolls etc) because these companies produce bats at large numbers. So obviously when you produce bats at large number the quality is overlooked and quantity is what you need to achieve. On the other hand, smaller companies (Newbery, Salix, Redback and many more) produce quality bats and dont produce a lot of bats like Gray Nicolls, Kookaburra etc would do.

Personally I hate SS bats as there shape looks garbage to me. It never impresses me at all no matter which SS bat it is. BAS make good bats but there stock shape bats have high-mid sweetspot (ask ca_gold Bhai as he has a BAS bat).
 
Well I'm not worried about fakes and whatnot, as the store I'm looking to buy from I trust.

I don't want a Pakistani bat, simply because I don't feel as though the artificial pitches in the US are conducive to batting with a Pakistani bat (because I did that with an MB Malik Zulfi and Safri and wasn't happy).

So what's the final recommendation here, if I want a Newberry bat? And if I want a kookaburra, which type should I get out of the 4 (Ice, Kahuna, Blade, and the other thing)
 
Newbery bat which has low sweatspot is Newbery Krakatoa. Check out my review for more information on the bat. If you want a good pickup Newbery bat then go for Thruxton or GT both have ultralight pickup.

Kookaburra I would say Blade or Kahuna. However, Kahuna has high sweetsppt but is a good bat. I wouldn't recommend Kookaburra at all because after all you are paying $250+ for a Indian made bat which is not worth in opinion and is over priced.
 
Salams CD. Basically need a new bat for next season. Going to order it around december so not in a hurry yet. Need a light 2.7-2.8 bat top quality at the best deal possible. I dont care about company as long as the piece of willow is great and top notch. So your saying AS V10 from Sialkot store is the best deal on his site for such a bat?

If you wish to opt out for Pakistani bat then I would say AS V10 or MB Malik Bubber Sher Limited Edition. If you want a bat around $150 plus shipping then I would say buy AS V10 as that is one of the best Asian bat for its value. AS V10 is a better version of AS V3 and both of these bats are top notch. They have really long sweetspot and is very good for stroke making shots and hopefully for slogging as well.

Sailkot Shop is a good seller as few members from this forum have dealt with him and are happy with it.

I don't know about Bubber Sher L.E but I have used V10. It is a beautiful piece of willow. If you knock it in properly even the toe is really thick and I have seen our fast bowlers hit sixes which have hit the toe. The pickup is also light and balanced.

Saying that I prefer bats which are not as thick. It might be the way I play. I think it is best to hold the bat and like the feel of the bat. As I said the V10 is amazing and picks up lightly. But I still use another bat which does not necessarily "ping" as much.

I have played with an older Sher Amin of a team mate. I did not like the pickup. Also V10 has a better handle than V3. I have not tried CA Plus 12000 and above. But among V3, V10, Sher Amin and CA 10,000 Plus V10 has the best handle IMO.
 
Ok so your saying AS V10 is as good as a Bubber Sher LE? and its top quality Grade 1 which is what I want. My last bat was a sher amin and it was when sher amin was grade 1 and I really liked it. Its still going good but I think nows the time to invest in a new bat. So if AS V10 is going to provide me with high quality willow with good performance Ill go for it. The ONLY problem I have is that Id be buying it online from that website so I wont be able to feel the bat before I buy it so I hope he gives me the weight I want (2.7-2.8)

I also need softs and they overprice them here in Jersey/NY. Sialkot shop looks to have them at good prices. What do you recommend and from where should I buy them from? Another problem I have is sialkot stores from pakistan so shippings expensive...

I recommend V10 bat if you liked Sher Amin. Ask for 2lb 8 or under. In Pakistan they generally weigh the bat before grip and stickers. AS site is legitimate for e-mail orders. Just call them when you order, although it is not strictly needed but always good to establish the contact ( something taught to me by CD bhai).

I don't like AS softs. Newest pads are bulky, the gloves look nice but their strap loses "stickiness" very early. I would recommend SS softs. I am using the 2010 Super Test gloves (used by Azhar Ali this season) and they are top notch. You can get these through Ajit bhai on Online Stockist or through Asad bhai on uzisports. You may get it cheaper through Ajit but Asad bhai is always accessible through e-mail or Google Chat. I have had a great experience with Asad bhai.

If you want Pakistani softs for some reason go for either Malik or the new CA. I have dealt with Basharat Bhai at Sialkot Shop. He is really a top guy and again always accessible on e-mail.
 
yea with the bat Id rather go with pakistani cuz they cheaper and plus for some reason I wouldnt feel right using an indian bat. Psychological thing. I dont mind using Indian softs tho lol.

Also any other place other then sialkot? I wanna weigh my options to get the best possible deal for someone that lives in America cuz shipping costs can be high

For AS use the website direct. Cheapest and peace of mind.

For non- AS Pakistani I have only tried Sialkot. Another option is to contact CA or MB directly. CD bhai always recommends UT sports. If you find anything cheaper than the company website it is probably fake. CD published a list of prices of Pakistani equipment. It always helps keeping that in mind when talking to these sellers. You should expect to pay a small premium over those prices. But don't allow them to take you on a ride. Similarly anything under that is probably fake.

One of my clubmate has AS V10 (cricketer13 Bhai) and Bhai it is a beautiful bat. Honestly, I always wanted to get an AS bat (first V3 and now V10) but I am not sure why but I would say luck didn't favour any. I was very close in getting aS bats (eg paid and everything) but at the end somehting would come up and I wouldn't get it.

Yes, you are right. V10 toe is a bit meaty and what I really like about it is that the spine runs all the way to toe from splice. It has got massive driving zone. Yup, pickup is brilliant and is very very well balanced bat.

Hoenstly, I really don't believe much in ping crap. I mean one can not expect a bat to ping right away. The GN I have came to its life in second season after using it first season, nets and indoors. And now the bat is literally a rocket. Ball flies and no other bat is as good as my GN at the moment.

MB bats are usually bottom heavy as they have low sweetspot.

I am not sure but can you please tell me how to figure out which handle is bad or good? I mean how do you tell the difference between a good and bad handle?

You have AS V10 pads which are similar to Boom Boom 5 Star, right?

Actually Obeid Bhai SS softs are one of the best in the market. There softs are really good. The shipping of pads from India, Pakistan, UK etc would be greater than a bat because the pads weigh more than a bat. Shipping of a bat from Pakistan is not that much. I believe it's $25 so that's not much.

Opener Bhai, the gloves Azhar Ali use are SS Milleniuem Pro (2009) model. So I am guessing you have these ones, do you? SS Supertest are traditional style gloves. I am not sure but the gloves Azhar Ali worn were actually from Izisports as Asad Bhai know Azhar Ali quite well.

I have used V3 gloves but they weren't great. I am not sure how good AS softs are now (the new ones) but the one I had weren't great. I have used or tried out all Pakistani brands (big ones) gloves and most of their pads. Among all of them I found MB Malik Bubber Sher gloves the best. I am not saying this because I have them but they are very good gloves for Pakistani standard and they have impoved there quality immensely. The only concern I have regarding Bubber Sher gloves is that they are tad bulky but apart from that they are top notch. They are very soft, comfortable etc.

Hello all - just testing on my first post on this forum.
There are alot of decent bats mentioned. Out of the Kookaburra bats, the Ice was my favourite, although they have replaced this with the Rogue which doesn't seem as nice although I haven't tried one. The Blade seems to be popular and they make them pretty light. But the Kahuna has survived the test of time really well. The thing I would say about Kookaburra bats is that you get some good ones, but also get some planks! So test the response of the blades in the shops!
The AS tends to be a great blade! I had a V3 but the handle was poor quality and this was an issue for a number of V3 bats! I had the handle replaced for a Newbury handle and it made the bat a beauty! The blade was excellent and the handle improved it! I'm sure they would have the handle issues of old resolved by now though.
Which ever bat you get, I hoe it works out well for you!

A great post I must say.

As you said Ice have been replaced by Rogue but I don't think they have played with the profile or anything, have they? I think they have only changed the colour scheme from blue/white to orange/white and thats pretty much it basically.

As far V3 are concerned yes many people have complained that AS bat seem to have poor handles and break very often. Not sure this is one of the main reason why AS bats are so cheap ?
 
I was under the impression that the Rogue replaced the Ice and was slightly different profile - subtle changes, including the Ice having more driving power - But I could well be wrong as I only have a couple of Kook Beasts and a couple of Kahunas. But I always liked the Ice and everyone I know that has one is more than happy with the balance and profiles.
And it's a shame about the V3, as the blade was lovely quality. Great finish too, but just the handle that let some of them down. If anyone has a V10 then would be interested to find out if they have improved the handle quality
 
Ahh okay, make sense, its shame to play around with he profile. I always thought they just changed the colours.

Excuse me my arrogance but how do you know if the handle is poor or not? My Bubber Sher has thin handle and technically I have 3 grips on it (Xtrax and a normal grip) and now it feels better in my hand however there are few craks near the splice in shoulder so is this because of handle?
 
My friend just came back from Pakistan with a 2.6 CA Plus 12000 TRD bat, and let me tell you, the bat is absolutely massive and is so light it's unbelievable.

Will cost you less than $250USD to get shipped to you as well.
 
TRD LE are impressive I must say. I have my friends with me and trust me its beautiful

Hmm I think they retail and factory sells them for Rs. 22,000 which is close to $270 USD.

I hope his bat is genuine.....
 
His dad is an ex-first class player, he bought it from a friend who runs a cricket store in Karachi.

Looked genuine to me lol, 12+ ARROW STRAIGHT grains :inzi
 
Ah then it makes sense :D

The TRD LE I have has 10 grains and they are RULER PENCIL STRAIGHT grains and best I have ever seen!

Alas the V3 was sold to a very thankful person!! But I may still have a few pics somewhere.
I will start a seperate topic for the bat collection as I wouldn't want to clog up someone elses topic.

Uhmm in North America I'm not sure of any store or website which have Boom Boom bats. My local bat shop might have then but they'll have to ship it out to you in US.

How many do you need?

Just two bats at the most depending on price

1st link is a genuine seller and its genuine kook bat but its kashmir willow.

That Kookaburra bat as Knightrider said is Kashmiri Willow and stickers are fake.

the handle quality isnt very good on my AS V10...i would not recommend it

Not sure but is it sign of a poor handle where these rubber strips are not in the middle exactly?

Also I have noticed Pakistani bats have corks while English bats have rubber strips :S
 
So what is the recommendation, considering I have already broken a perfectly good bat not due to the wood / bat itself, but the handle has slightly separated from the bat -_-

Back to Boom Boom?

I read the thread with the new Boom Boom bat and apparently 3 star, 4 star, and 5 star is meant for Pakistan and the 150-225 range is meant for UK, so what is meant for USA / Canada since we play on artificial pitches mostly?

And if you could please find out from your local bat store about availability, and perhaps I can contact them and pay them online and they can ship it to me.

Actually if you have pictures then you'll be able to tell the difference.

Pakistani Boom Boom range consists of 5 Star bat which is Golden/Black :afridi, 4 Star which is Red/Black :razzaq, 3 Star which is Blue/Black :fawad and 2 Star which is Green/Black. So it is not difficult to differentiate the difference between Pakistani and UK Boom Boom bats.

Hmm for us I would say go for Pakistani ones because they are harder pressed and they will last long so it will be better to go for those as they will have long life which would be ideal for one who doesn't wish to get new bat every now and then.

Do you want there number?

Why don't you try any online retailers who can ship bats from Pakistan or UK to you ? Some UK sellers are selling Pakistani Boom Boom bats.

Now my question is, 5 star, 4 star, or 3 star LOL

I'd like a lightweight bat because I'm not the most muscular, but I do want to be able to hit sixes if and when required because technically I'm not the greatest batsman (although I try very hard).

Now that depends on your budget. Sorry but whats your budget for a bat again ?

Just middle and time it like Afridi/Razzaq and it will travel the distance :)
