Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan confirmed on Wednesday (July 24) that they will host two T20s between Asian all-star XI and World XI next year to celebrate the 100th birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Nazmul said that the decision was taken during the ICC meeting and both the games will get international status. The two matches will be played on March 18 and 21, 2020 in Mirpur.

“The dates of the matches have been finalized. The matches will take place between March 18 and March 21. We have not contacted anyone yet, but players from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan will take part alongside the Bangladesh cricketers in Asia XI,” said Nazmul.

“We will have to discount players from teams who will have FTP (Future Tours Program) series in that time. We will make the best possible teams from the available players.

"One good thing that happened is that all the other boards have supported this proposal and it has been decided that the match will get international status."

In 2017, Pakistan played three T20Is against World XI in Lahore to promote the return of international cricket in their home country.

Time to put our personal squads, even though a bit too early... can someone first check and update which countries have a conflict. not sure also if PSL has conflict?

He is a father of Bangladesh not asia
So shouldnt it be Bangladesh vs world XI??

Should be fun. Although it seems India, SA, New Zealand and Australia will have international commitments at the time

Meaningless tournament. I reckon T20 stalwarts will play. Okay bigger question: who even picks the squads for this tournaments?

Oh, one of these matches. Love this type of matches. Indians/Pakistanis/B'deshis/Lankans all unites into one team. Differences/hatred of fans goes out the window.

My Asia XI:

Rohit
Babar
Kohli (c)
Shakib
Fernando
Nabi
Mushfiq (wk)
Imad
Bumrah
Shaheen
Shami

I don't think this will be the XI as important players may skip this meaningless series.

Bangladeshi players will be readily available. I don't think India nor Pakistan will send their A grade players.

BCB to host AsiaXI vs WorldXI matches in March 2020

BCB will host two T20 matches between Asia11 and World11 in March 2020. It will be to commerate the birth centenaryvof Sheikh Mujib.

Makes sense but surely you want to celebrate such an occasion with a victory - Bangladesh against a World XI might be a bit embarrassing for the home team, unless it’s a World XI with Shoaib Malik as captain and Hafeez as star batsman. :)

Can we see Kohli and Babar bat together?

Can we see Amir and Bumrah bowl together?

What a sight that would be.

Let's not mix politics with sports.

This game shouldn't have international status. I don't think major players will play in it.

Make it a charity game. All profits can go to Rohingya refugees.

I think it would be disrespectful to send Pakistani players. After all, Shaikh Mujeeb-ur-Rehman didn't like us very much.

Could be interesting if it goes ahead and the best players are available/willing.

I don't know why ICC wants to give these matches international status. It is highly likely no major player will play in it. ICC shouldn't disrespect international stats like that. They also did the same with West Indies vs World XI game (held in UK).

And if we are sending our players, lets make sure we send Ahmad Shahzad, Umar Akmal and Sohail Tanveer to pay our respects to Shaikh sahab.

Both are for some reason

I have a better idea. Faisal Iqbal, khurram Manzoor, Imran Farhat, Junaid Zia, and Lord Rahat Ali for the Asia XI

You missed Wajahatullah Wasti. LOL!

Jokes aside, I hope BD uses it as a practice game for 2020 T20 WC.

Agreed. Nothing is confirmed yet. India also plays South Africa during that time (home ODI series).

Such games of mix teams will only have bad cricket. I remember how Grahame Smith questioned the commitment of Sehwag, Inzi who were only walking in the field....

The purpose of these matches mean Pak likely wouldn't send anyone.

Why make it a political thing BCB? Enough of jingoism.

Pak has nothing to do with celebrating sheikh's birthday.

So, both the matches will be T20I.

World XI should try to get Chris Gayle & AB De Villiers.

Now, Shahid Afridi has got 98 wickets in 99 T20I games.

Onoy two countries have commitments. Others are free between 18-21 march of 2020

Which two sides ?

BCB has therefore planned to hold the two matches with international status on March 18 and 22 at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka

India will not host any matches between Asia XI and World XI which were scheduled to be played to mark the 100th birthday of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India president Sourav Ganguly had initially planned to host one of the two matches of the series at Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad to mark the opening of the venue built at a cost of $100m.

Bangladesh Cricket Board CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury informed that construction of the stadium in India will not be completed within the timeframe of the series.

BCB has therefore planned to hold the two matches with international status on March 18 and 22 at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.

Former India captain Ganguly notified the change in plan to BCB officials during a meeting in Kolkata Tuesday.

“A match was expected to be played there as they were expected to inaugurate a big stadium, but now they [BCCI] are not ready to do it, and both the matches will be played here,” Nizamuddin said yesterday at the BCB headquarter.

In order to make the two-game Twenty20 international series colorful, BCB is mulling bringing in legends of the game.

Cricketers who have retired will not be able to play the game, given the matches are of international status.

“We are open to inviting everyone. We will definitely invite the high-ups of the cricket world, dignitaries who are in the International Cricket Council and other important positions. Also, we will try to bring cricketing legends of different eras. We will try to make all the necessary measurements to make the event colorful,” said Nizamuddin.

“We are communicating with almost everyone. As I said, we are contacting with every player who are in our list. There are a few complications that we need to work on. There are some cases where there is a series starting or there is a series starting right after the event. In those cases, we are working on how we can ensure their participation,” he said.

“It would have been much easier for us if we could call on retired players. But as both the matches have been given international status, there is no chance of calling retired players. International cricket legends could attend the event, but there is no chance of them playing,” he said.

BCB for the past week has been in communication with boards over participation of cricketers who have been shortlisted for the two teams.

Nizamuddin informed that Bangladesh cricketers will be given preference despite the presence of the current stars of the game from around the globe.

Lol like that is going to happen

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) wants India captain Virat Kohli to be part of the two T20s, scheduled in Dhaka between March 18 to 22, to celebrate the birth centenary of country's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The BCCI is considering BCB's request. The Asia XI and World XI teams are yet to be confirmed for the two games but BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury said that the matches will be held in the March 18-22 window. "We are still working on the scheduling and the players' availability for the games and will make the announcement soon. What I can say is that the games will be played between March 18-22 and we are in constant touch with the BCCI over the availability of the Indian players," Chowdhury told PTI without referring Kohli's name.

Asked about the Indian players' availability for the matches, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, who was at the Board headquarters in Mumbai on Friday, said: "We have not yet finalised the names. We can send four to five players."

However, a BCCI official revealed that the issue was discussed in the Apex Council meeting on Sunday with BCB wanting Kohli to play in the matches.

“BCB wants Kohli to play in the matches and it is understandable considering he is the best player in the world. Also, they want all India regulars for the game.

"Since there is a plan that the series will be extended to Ahmedabad, where the third game is proposed at the renovated stadium, the Board is considering BCB's request," the official said.

Considering the hectic schedule of the Indian team, it remains to be seen if Kohli makes him available for the games in Dhaka. The team is currently in the middle of a full tour of New Zealand which ends on March 4.

A week later, India will host a three-match ODI series against South Africa beginning March 12 in Dharamsala.

The second game will be played in Lucknow on March 15 and third in Kolkata on March 18.

The IPL also starts on March 29. If the first T20 in Dhaka is held on March 18, then Kohli can't play that game as he will be on national duty.
According to a BCB source, the most likely dates for the Mujibur Rahman Centenary series will be March 21 and 22.

I think he'll be there and so will Rohit.
Won't be surprised if Dhoni shows up too for marketing reasons.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Wednesday postponed the upcoming World XI versus Asia XI matches, which would have marked the birth centenary celebrations of the father of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, owing to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

The matches were scheduled to be played on March 21 and 22 in Dhaka and were set to include international stars including Virat Kohli, Lasith Malinga and Chris Gayle.

“There’s no guarantee that those who are supposed to play will be able to arrive, or can leave after the matches,” ESPNCricinfo quoted BCB president Nazmul Hasan as saying.

“There are a lot of restrictions, so we have deferred both programmes. We will organise after a month taking stock of the situation. It is postponed for the time being,” he added.

He said that the matches have been “deferred” until further notice.

The board also decided to postpone the AR Rahman concert at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, which was to be a part of the celebrations.

Bangladesh are currently playing a T20I series against Zimbabwe.

The coronavirus or COVID-19 has led to either cancellation or postponement of many sporting events across the world. Some fixtures are also being held behind closed doors due to the deadly coronavirus that has already claimed over 4000 lives while infecting more than 1 lakh people across the world.

Recently, it was decided that football matches in popular Spanish League La Liga would be played behind closed doors for two weeks.

Italy’s competition Serie A has been suspended due to coronavirus outbreak in the country while next week’s Champions League fixture between Barcelona and Napoli will also be played behind closed doors.
