An interesting concept for T20s I guess.

------------------

NEW DELHI: If the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revolutionised T20 cricket by introducing the Indian Premier League (IPL), they are looking to take it one step further by bringing in the concept of Power Player in the next edition of the cash-rich league.

Teams will be allowed to substitute a player at the fall of a wicket or at the end of an over at any point in the game.

Speaking to IANS, a senior BCCI official said that the concept has already been approved, but will be discussed further in the IPL Governing Council meeting that will take place at the BCCI HQ in Mumbai on Tuesday.

"We are looking at a scenario where a team will not name the Playing XI. They will announce the 15 and a player can be substituted at either the fall of a wicket or at the end of the over at any point in the game. While we are looking to introduce it in the IPL, trying the concept first in the upcoming Mushtaq Ali Trophy could be the ideal way forward," the official said.

Explaining how the idea will actually change the game, the official said the concept has the capacity to change match situations and induce out-of-the-box thinking and strategising from the two teams and engage even the fans further.

"Imagine you need 20 runs off the last six balls and you have Andre Russell sitting in the dug-out as he wasn't a hundred percent and wasn't part of the original XI. But now, he can just walk in and go slam-bang and win you the game.

"Similarly, say you need to defend six runs off the last over and you have someone like a Jasprit Bumrah sitting in the dug-out. So, what does the captain do? Brings in Bumrah at the end of the 19th over and there you go. The concept has the potential to change the game," the official said.

Apart from deliberating on this concept at the IPL GC on Tuesday, the members will also review the 2019 edition of the cash-rich league. The team will also discuss how to go about making the next edition of the league bigger and better when it comes to not just the game, but also fan engagement.

Ridiculous idea. One substitute at max if they want to do that.

Good idea, has been tried before under a different guise, cricket has never really perfected the logistics behind a substitute.

I'm not sure how this would work.

So why would you have a Jasprit Bumra on the first place? Also would you risk a player who was not quite 100 percent even for an over or two? Also once youve made the substitution would that player play the rest of the match? So for example if you made a substitution on the 10 over would the player play the final ten overs?

For the IPL it means many teams could use the bench warmers for this. It would also prolong the career of people like Hafeez and Malik in other leagues if they adopt this method. Imagine Afridi on a contract just to play as a power player?

It has some potential if used cleverly. personally i think the game should look at substitutes again so captains and coaches can make use of the whole squad rather than just the eleven.

Want to see it in practice then we can make our minds up

It was tried in LOIs previously (Super Sub) in somewhat similar fashion and wasnt much successful. It will also make the some important aspects of cricket like 5th or 6th bowler and lack of batting depth redundant. If a team bats first and scores a decent total than they can change in if their batsmen with a specialist bowler and will make the strategies of the other teams to target their 5th or 6th bowler useless. Same is the case with bowling earlier and then replacing a bowler with a batsmen and increasing the batting depth.

This will make one sided games more one sided in my opinion as when you are posting a big score and getting a team out cheaply, you are getting an extra bowler to defend a big total or an extra batsman to chase a small one.

Nothing new or creative. Similar to the failed super sub idea.

As far as innovations in T20 are concerned it is the Big Bash which is far ahead of the rest. IPL has always been reactionary in this regard.

Super Sub had to be announced before the toss. Thats why in many cases it was redundant.

In this case the team will announce a 15 member squad. And any of the 12 can play. Plus unlike super sub, here the substitute player can come in At any time during the match, after an over or after a player is out.

Do you think it takes away from the beauty of the 'traditional' game?

Surely the best way is always to be playing the extra batsman?

For example, you go through 4 consecutive overs of a frontline bowler, his job is now done so you then sub him off for another frontline bowler. No need to do anything else.

Don't see many other strategies than that tbh. The idea of a big hitter or Bumrah on the bench and not as part of the XI seems like fantasy.

We are emulating Baseball? Bullpen? Relief pitcher working to close the game? Pinch hitter comes in when the grafter is struggling to hit a boundary?

It will be interesting to see how it works out. At least its original, the BCCI just copy the ECB in most things.

I could see sides benching top bowlers if their fielding is on the weaker side.

Also the rule could help when the team has misread the conditions and either need an extra spinner or extra pacer.

The IPL Governing Council is planning to have an umpire assigned specifically to check “no balls” after a number of howlers in the past few seasons led to heightened concerns about quality of Indian match officials.

It was also learnt that the much-hyped ‘Power Player’ concept of substitutions during IPL games was shelved for the time being as the project can’t be piloted during upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (National T20), starting later this week.

The GC chaired by former Test batsman Brijesh Patel met at the cricket headquarters to discuss a slew of issues including FTP window, availability of foreign players, FTP of Indian team and possibility of franchises playing friendlies abroad.

However the talking point was having an exclusive umpire to check on the contentious front-foot and height no balls.

“If all goes well, during the next Indian Premier League, you could see another umpire apart from the regular umpires just to “observe” no-balls.

The concept sounds weird, but this was among the issues discussed in the first IPL Governing Council meeting which was held here,” a senior GC member told reporters after the meet.

“We want to use the technology. We are having another umpire for only observing no-balls. There will be an umpire, who will be focused on no-balls only. And he will not be third or fourth umpire,” the influential member said.

There was a lot of hue and cry during the last IPL, when some debatable decisions were taken with regards to front-foot no-balls.

India skipper Virat Kohli even had a heated word with Indian umpire S Ravi, who failed to spot a no-ball by Mumbai Indians’ Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga, which proved costly for the Royal Challengers Bangalore during one of the IPL matches.

It is understood that the concept of having such umpires could be tried at any of the domestic tournament before a final call will be taken on it.

On the concept of ‘Power Player’, the official said: “The matter was discussed but there is too little time to implement during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which starts on Friday, November 8.”

The PTI had reported on Friday that there was little or no possibility of ‘Power Player’ being introduced for the time being without consent of BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.

Sources close to the president had in fact said that there is no chance of implementing it for the time being.

There have been questions in the BCCI corridors whether one particular IPL operations man had devised the strategy which would have favoured one particular franchise with aged players.

Why can't the third umpire check for no balls on his own? Don't really see the need to hire an extra umpire to exclusively monitor no balls. It's not like the third umpire is occupied all the time reviewing DRS calls.
