This is my list in order of merit of performances by an all-rounder in a test series by a player when his team lost.

1.Imran Khan's 21 wickets and 318 runs in England in 1982

Displayed Soberesque ability controlling the momentum of the game as few players ever did.Often looked like the game, set and match was determined by Imran Khan.Dubious umpiring decisions at Leeds cost Pakistan the series.Imran overshadowed the legendary Ian Botham in this series.Rarely have I have ever seen a player let alone all-rounder carry a game so much on his shoulders .

2.Gary Sobers v England in 1967-68

Truly mercurial a Georgetown ressurecting his team from the grave and bringing them within the doorstep of a dramatic win.Took 8 scalps and scored 95 in that match. Also scored a classic 113 on a broken track at Kingston.Untimely declaration cost his team the series at Trinidad.Neverthless revealed great sportsmanship.

3.Mushtaq Muhammad in West Indies in 1977

Batted and bowler consistently well and also gave great leadership. At Trinidad in the 4th test scored 128 and 56 and took 8 wickets to win the game of Pakistan.Almost led his team to secure a drawn rubber.

4.Kapil Dev in England in 1982

With scores of 41,89,65 and 97 gave the best batting by an overseas all-rounder seen in England for a very long time.At Lords in the 1st test his bowling was a revelation taking 8-168.

5.Wasim Akram in Australia in 1989-90

Looked even better than the great Imran Khan and reminded you of Sobers.Classical at Adelaide ressurecting team from the grave to come within a doorstep of a famous win .Took 5-100 and scored 123 in that game.

6.Kapil Dev in West Indies in 1983

Captured 24 wickets and almost scored 2 centuries against arguably the best team ever.Troubled the great Sir Viv Richards with prodiguous swing and at his best hit the likes of Roberts and Marshall all over the place.unbeaten century saved the Trinidad test for India.

7.Richard Hadlee in Australia in 1980-81

Spectacular with the ball taking 19 wickets and also scored some useful fifties.

8.Richard Hadlee in England in 1983

Similar to Imran Khan.Instrumental in the Kiwis winning the 2nd test at Leeds.
