It's never easy to change the fortunes of Pakistan Cricket, So can Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie steer the ride well inside Pakistan's well of death?

Introduction:

PakPassion member @The Bald Eagle analyses the selection of new separate Head Coaches for Pakistan, touching upon the challenges, opportunities and changes that may ensue after the selection of Gary Kirstein and Jason Gillespie as Pakistan's new white and red ball coaches respectiv ely

In search of gold, we lost diamonds. This is a common phrase that Pakistan Cricket Team (PCT) fans employ to describe the erroneous decisions of the PCB. But fortunately enough, the case is quite the opposite this time, as in search of novice coaches like Shane Watson and Darren Sammy, PCB ended up stumbling upon the veterans of the game like Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie. No disgrace to Sammy and Watson, but they are still green in the domain of coaching in comparison to guys like Kirsten and Gillespie. So finally, Pakistan now has world-class coaches along with world-class players, but the big question is will all this translate into world class results and trophies too? If not, then certainly this episode will go down in the history of PCT as one of the darkest chapters.

The gamble of separate coaches – A novel, rewarding and tricky strategy:

The case of a single coach looks more plausible but isn’t necessarily a success recipe. England although had ambivalent results under this dual coach arrangement but this approach is yet to make a mark for itself in the realm of cricket.

So the separate coach paradigm may work well for Pakistan too but for that there would be a need of a seasoned assistant coach to act as a bridge between the separate format coaches. As such individual not only could keep an eye on players development across the formats but also could assist the respective format coaches to execute their plans well for the betterment of team. Also in case of separate coaches, the goals are few and well defined. Another merit of this approach is that instead of burying one failures through good performances in other formats, a coach can be held squarely accountable for his performance in the respective format.

Gary Kirsten – The game changer or game spoiler:

MS Dhoni once described Gary Kirsten as, “the best thing that could have happened to Indian cricket” and indeed till date he is the only foreign coach under whom India has won an ODI World Cup. Under his tutelage, Hobart Hurricanes reached the final in his first year as coach for them. Also he played a pivotal role in helping Gujrat Titans (GT) win their maiden IPL title in 2022. So no doubt Kirsten is a world class white ball coach with some remarkable achievements. But the question is can he be the game changer for the PCT too? It is too difficult to predict precisely how the things will unfold for him in PCT but one thing that make us super optimistic is his exceptional coaching profile and the fact that after Dav Whatmore, he is only the second foreign world cup winning coach to manage the Pakistan team so far. But being a game changer for many teams, he once emerged as a game spoiler too and that was for RCB who finished at 6th place a year before him but under him touched the rock bottom in the IPL season 2019. So the bottom line is we don’t need to be ultra optimistic here.

Some big challenges for the Kirsten and Gillespie duo:

According to former Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur, the chief reason behind the underwhelming performances by players is their sense of insecurity as he once stated:

“When there’s security within the environment, Pakistan is very good. When there’s that insecurity, players start playing for themselves”

So for being successful at PCT, the Kirsten-Gillespie duo need to deal well with this dilemma. Another big test that await them would be to deal amicably with players to sort out all the issues that engender factionism within the Pakistan team. For this they may had to entrust different roles to different players from time to time in order to save them from the menace of infighting. And one of the constant headache for the Kirsten-Gillespie duo would be to get along with the PCB ie one of the most politicized board in the cricketing world.

But the big thing is that it is not a SENA nation that they are going to coach but it is team Pakistan where the board is full of intriguing characters and politics is rampant within the dressing room. Where a head coach and captain gets removed after a single series. Where the chairman is a political appointee and where new portfolios are created just to confer favors upon the protégés.

Some notable traits from Kirsten’s playbook:

So what is the reason that has made Kirsten so successful? There are a number of them but to build strong rapports and bonds with the players individually is one of them. Also during his coaching career, Kirsten has always picked a livewire and in-form player as a captain for his side. So during his stint at PCT Kirsten may continue with Babar but a dip in form may coerce him to change the captain for the side.

Another good thing about Kirsten is his young talent promoting philosophy. During his stint with team India he promoted guys like Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and Ravichandran Ashwin who turned out to be great players. Also Kristen’s flair to transform the mental toughness of players to thrive well in high-pressure situations is also something worth mentioning. In words of Sehwag, Kirsten made us play every game a year before the World Cup 2011 as a knock out encounter. So to emulate the same with team Pakistan will be crucial to end Pakistan’s 7 years long trophy drought. Another distinct trait of Kirsten is his robust rotation of players policy which also enable him to utilize well his trial and test model ie the chief reason behind his enormous success over the years. A good thing about this commendable strategy is that it allows a coach to try a large pool of players and thus ensuring merit and proper talent appreciation within a side. But a downside to Kirsten’s late appointment is that he does not have enough time at his disposal to employ his above playbook tactics. As T20 WC 2024 is nearly a month away while ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is just 10 months away from now.

Another encouraging news for PCT is Gary Kirsten’s conflict management abilities. For those who don’t know in the early 2010s, Indian team was the epicenter of internal intrigues where the two groups led by Virendar Sehwag and M.S Dhoni were vying for captaincy and other key positions within the team for their respective supporters. Kirsten at that stage acted sensibly and managed the players ego magnificently well to deter such internal team politics from engendering any negative ripple effect over the strong team performances.

Well for Pakistan, he definitely would have to play the same positive role as many rumors are rife regarding the grouping within the PCT since Shaheen Afridi’s abrupt removal from the T20 captaincy which even Mohsin Naqvi has partially acknowledged.

Pakistan’s dismal woes in red ball format and the peculiar selection of Jason Gillespie:

The big and pertinent question here is why not we went for Kirsten here too. Bearing in mind that under his tenure South Africa claimed the no.1 spot in the Test formats. Also it was under his tutelage that Indian team became the Test mace holder in 2009. So why Mr Gillespie was favored over Kirstein here. For those who don’t know, Jason Gillespie is a Test format maverick who not only helped the relegated Yorkshire side to get elevated into the first division of English County in his maiden stint but also managed to bag two county titles for them in the subsequent years while missing out closely on the third one. Also in his five year stint at Yorkshire, Gillespie’s side just lost 7 matches. While Kirstein’s Indian side lost 10 in just a space of two years from 2009-2011. Also recently, Gillespie has served as the head coach for the Australian first class domestic side, South Australia. So Gillespie holds a rich experience in the red ball format.

Pakistan team, in the last two years, had been utterly pedestrian in the red ball format as they have managed to win only 3 Tests out of their last 15 and that too include victories against minnow sides like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. And even worse is Pakistan’s recent abysmal run at the home turf where they have lost 4 out of their last 6 Tests let alone claiming any success in the SENA nations. So in this time of crisis Pakistan team badly needed an impetus and the selection of red ball maestro Jason Gillespie appears to be a positive step in the right direction for team Green.

The only downside for Gillespie in this role is his lack of coaching experience for a sub-continent side but being part of a world cup winning team, the South Australia can bring with him the Aussie winning mentality and by infusing it successfully into the PCT, he could definitely turn team Pakistan into a formidable Test side in the years to come.

Gary Kirsten’s record as all format coach for Team India:

Mission CT 2025 : The litmus test for Gary Kirsten:

No matter whatever we may suggest, winning the T20 World Cup 2024 is a forgone conclusion now, as Gary Kirsten may hardly join the team a week or two before the T20 World Cup, so the main goal for Kirstein would be to help Pakistan strategically stage a successful defense of its Champions Trophy (CT) crown. In fact, the main accolade for which Kirsten is still known is the ODI World Cup for India at home, a first of his kind at that time. Also bearing in mind that the next year’s CT tournament would be the first major ICC event in Pakistan in more than three decades, it becomes exponentially significant for the team Green.

The dilemma of no early beginnings and the impending disaster:

T20 World Cup 2024 is just a month away, but the tragedy for PCB is that their coaching pick for the white ball format, Gary Kirsten won’t be able to join the team until late May. Kirstein is currently busy with his IPL franchise, Gujrat Titans and there lies the headache for team Pakistan, who will head into the T20 World Cup 2024 with a new coach who will have just two weeks to build a rapport with the players, let alone extract strong performances from them. So here, PCB could do a favor to PCT by letting guys like Azhar Mahmood continue until the T20 World Cup in 2024 and letting Kirsten join the team as a special mentor. This will ease the pressure off Kirsten and would also help team Pakistan continue seamlessly under an existing head coach. But instead of that, they have designated the assistant coach portfolio to Azhar Mahmood under the aegis of Gary Kirsten. For the red ball format, things won’t be that tricky as Pakistan doesn’t have any test series till November this year and Gillespie would possibly join the team before that in July after the termination of his contract with the South Australian side.

Employing the hands off “laissez-faire” approach:

To expect anything good from the Kirsten-Gillespie duo with stings attached would be futile so both of them should be entrusted with great powers to build a team of their choice so they can’t blame the system in case they fail to deliver the desired results.

As we all know, PCB is a board plagued with politics, so the pre-condition for success of any coach would be to have a greater say and input in the selection committee. Also in such process, the coaches need not to ignore the input from players as it has caused havoc in the team before as described below by former chief selector, Shahid Afridi:

“I came in as chief selector for one month. Believe me, there were so many problems. Captain had one choice, the coach has another. Both give me different reports,”

Need of a trickle down and pass the torch approach:

Another peculiar thing with Gary Kristen’s coaching style is that he never sticks with a side for more than 3 years due to his family commitments, even being a South African he choose not to continue with his native side for an extended term. So the main thing is that he may stick around for 3 to 4 years with PCT.

So in that case PCB management needs to do some long term planning as it is highly unlikely that Gary Kirsten may continue beyond a 3 year stint bearing in mind his past track record. So PCB needs to groom his successor along the line rather than leaving it too late for PCT to suffer. Here the newly appointed Assistant Coach, Azhar Mahmood can play a special role by filling the void post Kirsten era thus ensuring a smooth transition phase after Gary Kirsten’s exit. The very fact that current world cup and world Test championship winning head coach, Andrew Mcdonald was himself an assistant coach for 3 years under his predecessor Justin Langer speak volumes on the need of a proper back up coach. So PCB need to learn a thing or two from above example and should appoint such a person as an assistant coach who is part of their long term planning. Currently, Azhar Mahmood has been entrusted with this responsibility and it would be a plausible decision by PCB to let him take the reins from this exceptional duo.

Conclusion:

Gillespie and Kirsten are no journeyman but proper qualified coaches with an acclaimed legacy and a decorated cabinet of trophies and as a PCT coach they would love to add many more such trophies to their collection but for that they must be afforded proper time and liberty to properly execute their plans. Even after that it won’t be a plain sailing for them as PCB’s political nature, PCT’s incessant internal rifts and the ever nagging media won’t spare them one bit even on the slightest of mistake but at the same any title or glory with the team green would grant them a status of a national hero. So it’s a tight rope to tread on for the Gillespie – Kirsten duo with a probability of high reward and risk that could impinge heavily on their legacy as coach.

So how do you guys foresee Gillespie – Kirsten duo for team Pakistan and can they turn the deplorable state of PCB for good?

How do you play modern brand of cricket if don’t have players and capabilities? If Babar plays more “unselfish” brand of cricket and in process gets out on Lower scores more often, who would take the responsibility to score the runs? Where are you going to find the players from to play this fearless brand of cricket? Except for Babar no one put up his hand even against this NZ C team.

Gautam Gambhir told Sunil Narine in KKR, you are going to open for KKR, if out of 15 games, you give us quick fire starts and do your job in just 3 games, you will have done your job and that is good enough and i promise you will not get dropped. Don't worry about any criticism, outside noise, i will deal with it and take the heat.

Can any coach, selector give this kind of backing and assurance to the Pakistani players? Outside noise in Pakistan Cricket sadly badly inhibits our players.

Probs 0, these coaches will be gone after this cup
Unfortunately, I don't have high hopes either as long Babar is captain. But at the same time I feel Gillespie is a better pick than Kirsten for two reasons.

Firstly Gillespie will scold our players like Babar, Iftikhar, Imad etc if they didn't perform as he is an aggressive man. Secondly, Gillespie still has a lot to prove unlike Kirsten who has achieved everything and won't take this job much seriously.

Nothing is going to change in Pakistan with timid soul like Kirsten. Gillespie is an interesting pick though, seems a hard taskmaster.

Pakistan’s problems are structural, you can have the best coaches money can buy but as long as the structural problems remain, the problems will remain.

Like most other structural problems in Pakistan, it will take a revolution to correct the structural issues plaguing Pakistan cricket.

Where have you seen Gillespie show aggression as a coach?
"Gillespie said banning sledging is the most ridiculous thing he's ever heard"

Don't worry bro, he will experiment that on Pakistan players and trust me he won't be as cordial as Rizwan used to be with players. Also he would be Mickey Arthur ultra pro max aggressive version. 😬

Sunil Narine also conveniently happens to be KKR’s best spinner which means that even if he doesn’t score a single run, he will be undroppable. The only thing that will change is his batting position. I love when people leave our convenient details.

Name a few players in Pakistan who are (a) undroppable because of the value that they provide in bowling and (b) can be utilized as a dasher at the top of the order like Narine.

Gary Kirsten will be great for guys like Saim Ayub. They will get a long rope and that's important in this era when bowling teams ruthlessly use matchups and data to take apart young batsmen.

Not sure what difference Gillespie can make though.

PAK just don't have the players for Test cricket.

Gary Kirsten is not the kind of coach Pakistan fans here would like.
I believe Gillespie would be great because of his aggression and Aussie winning genes.

Why do you say that?
As far as I remember when Kirsten was coach of India and South Africa, the guy doesn't like to face the fans or the journalists too much. Pakistan fans will be screaming for him to come to press conferences when the team loses.

I'm looking forward to seeing Jason Gillespie's strategies and how he'll shift the PCB's focus towards Test cricket, reviving the tradition of five-test series in Pakistan cricket soon.

Pakistan won't ever play a 5 test series again unless Test Cricket with India resumes.

We are not winning anything if babar is leading
Poor coaches will be the scapegoat for babar failure.

In pakistan managment changes after every tournament

Mickey Arthur is the only one rambert who last had a long run and there were improvements

Babar confidently said Rizwan will be back for the Ireland series

The PCB need to make official the medical reports. From what I am reading on Twitter, the guy realistically won’t be back anytime soon.

I don't see Gary KIrsten taking nonsense from Babar.

Mickey ( as much as I love him) was relatively washed up. He isn't in demand globally so was going through the motions to keep his job. He knew that if he failed he could go back to Derbyshire.

Kirsten is a respected coach. I doubt he will let the little Putin of Pak cricket dictate to him. Kirsten is also backed by one of the most powerful people in Pakistan.

But he said he would be there soon. Also what about Irfan Niazi...Big mess up if true

That’s not really how these guys operate. They try to make the ‘nonsense’ that the player wants to go with work for the better. They won’t be dictatorial when allowing a player not to be themselves.

What I recon will happen is, Babar will argue that they have to go to the 2021 and 2022 model in which the batting depends on him and Rizwan batting long. Kirsten will just go with it. He doesn’t have the time to build a different strategy, especially a strategy he himself applies for Gujarat Titans.

Kirsten has a reputation he will not look to waste by listening to anyone.

Also Naqvi is not going anywhere even if political parties change hands in Pakistan. He has the strongest backing for any chairman after General Tauqir Zia.

His treatment of Shaheen speaks volumes of how strong he really is at the moment.

They can take nonsense regarding a players individual game and pamper them sometimes but surely cant take nonsense for team strategy and method of play.

If Kirsten is unable to do that then might as well bring back Saqlain. At least the players are guaranteed to learn some pearls of wisdom.

You are right. Let’s wait and see. I just don’t think G Kirsten has enough time to build a strategy to match Australia, England, NZ and South Africa. I’m not counting India this time because I think they are also unsure about their own strategy whereas the 4 teams I mentioned are very direct (no nonsense). You can add West Indies as the 5th side due to home advantage and the power they possess too throughout.

You say that but I don’t think it’s as simple as that with Pakistan and Babar.

Who chose for Gill to open for Gujarat when he should actually be their number 3? Kirsten will empower his captain by trusting him. Gill wants to open knowing her can bat through and get big scores for himself.

If you want the best for Pakistan, you know Babar should be at number 3 and Fakhar should be opening.

Will Kirsten be no nonsense and make this happen? My bet is he wouldn’t.

You can't blame Kirsten for having a personal bias or bowing to the captain/PCB if he decides Babar is well suited to open the batting.

I repeat, Kirsten has a reputation in the world and would be quite possibly the most reputable foreign coach we have had since Bob Woolmer. Dav Whatmore and Mickey Arthur were not this high profile.

Kirsten did not get this reputation by being a yes-man. Coaching in franchise leagues and international cricket is completely different.

Just like Pep Guardialo we need to give full liberty to Kirsten even make him the head of selection committee so afterwards he couldn't make an excuse for failure.

What do you think Kirsten will do? What will be our strategy under him?

Poor Gary, he was working with a brilliant mind like Dhoni for India. For Pakistan, he will be working with an extremely low intellect mind like Babar. This coaching stint will be black spot on his career. Unfortunately, he can not do much about it here. PCB should listen to his advice and empower him. The Babar "Wannabe Imran" Azam experiment won't work anymore. Five years of mediocrity provide enough sample size to come to this judgment.

If Kirsten is willing to spend a decade with Pakistan like Pep with City, give him full liberty and authority by all means.

However, we all know that he will at best spend 2-3 years before going to back to IPL, so you cannot give someone full authority when he is only in it for the short-term.

Who are the high intellect minds who can captain Pakistan currently ?

Kirsten may be a better option than only talk coach micky. But kirsten seems to have degraded quite a bit with recent trends.I hope babar and rizwan will listen to Gary for pak cricket sake.As Gary is well habitual with desi mentality, lets hope he may find a way for some progress atleast.

Real deal is Gillespie and it will be interesting how he will counter good opponents at home and SA matches. Ishant have improved under him a lot and became a very good bowler.

Everyone is an upgrade over Babar.
Rizwan, Imad , Shadab, Shan or even a blind donkey.
But then you will have to have him opening the side and that would mean you are already losing no matter how well he makes bowling changes

Well Guardialo never was appointed for a decade he justified his prolonged stay with his excellent performance so why not afford the same liberty to Kirsten & Gillespie.

Because it is a gamble any way. If we got it then it is jackpot otherwise we have been losing badly for years now so why not some more years then.

Real change will happen after the Champions Trophy when Babar is booted out. No coach can work with a stupid Captain.
Why risk CT then it's the only event in Pakistan after more than 3 decades and of a crown that we are defending.

Mohsin Naqvi will not tolerate under performance and defeats. I forsee him sacking Babar eventually.

Totally different dynamics.

It is very rare for a football manager to resign, they are mostly sacked.

Cricket coaches resign all the time. Hardly anyone stays for the long-term.

You can’t have a cricket coach call the shots and veto the captain when he is not going to stay for the long-term.

Losing 2 T20s and actually deserving to lose 3 is a sackable offence

Babar has been given assurance that his job is in tact until CT25

Giving verbal assurance is one thing, but if the team performs very badly b/w now and the CT, i don't think Naqvi saab will be patient enough to bear with Babar, he is known to be hot headed especially with people who let him down.

I believe there is a big difference when you’re playing for a club and when you’re playing for national team. Unless you have scored tons and tons of runs in domestic and/or in precious outings, no international team will give you that luxury when they can give you 16 matches and expect nothing in return. You need to show something to get that long rope.

England persisted with Zak Crawley inspite of many failures and mounting public, ex cricketers being very critical. Special players get big runs.

If you pile up big runs in domestic then you should a long rope. Also, what constitutes someone as a special player? This is very subjective. Pakistanis believe if you put up a couple of good scores in a league you should be regarded as a special player. In other countries if you rack up big scores consistently in domestic cricket only then you should be regarded as a special player.

They need a solid 4 years. We should be ready to accept 2 years of medicority. We just don't have the players but they will come if an effective method stays the same for a long time. No more shuffling.

2 years is not that long period to bring any monumental change in this team. It will take more time than a few months to bring any noticeable change to the approach IMO. Especially for Jason, I mean, the Pakistan team is not playing that much test cricket so Jason has basically not much to worry about here. The real test is for Kirsten, he will come under scrutiny many times in these 2 years. He is a stiff coach so he might not be taking any nonsense kind of stuff in his team, and he should not be. He should be as hard as he can to make this team walk and run on their own feet.

Rest assured, a comprehensive strategy will be in place, anywhere we play; these individuals are no amateurs. The million-dollar question remains: can we execute it successfully? This time, there's no doubt that we have the right people with the credentials and intellect to steer this team. I see this as an exciting phase for Pakistan.

Misbah/Waqar was an easy target by armchair keyboard experts, due to their playing and captaincy styles; people readily linked the team's failure to their past experiences as captains.

Looking ahead to Gary Kirsten and JG, I doubt they'll feel pressured. With nothing to lose and everything to gain, they'll be generously compensated. Success could skyrocket their careers, making them the most sought-after coaches. Should they stumble, they can return to their prior roles, now armed with additional international experience, and blame any failures on the PCB structure, politics, etc. As I see it, they stand to gain substantially with minimal risk. Last time I checked Mickey Arthur is doing well for himself.

You are right. These 2 individuals are no joke when it comes to coaching especially Gary Kirsten. He has a high reputation of being a great coach which he needs to keep up so he will not be taking any risks with this team doing whatever they want. He will be more authoritative. Positive vibes should be coming from these 2 individual but I am not sure if Pakistan team can handle them.

After witnessing the bizarre selection from BCCI regarding Indian squad. I am feeling good as PCB settled for two good names.

Could this beautiful coincidence happen again? 🤔 _20240503_231038.JPG

--Before CT 2017 PCT on 7th rank in ODIs
Before ICC T20 WC 2024 PCT on 7th rank in T20s

--- A South African coach Mickey Arthur won the CT 2017 for Pakistan in his maiden ICC event with the team.
Another South African coach Gary Kirstein to lead Pakistan in his maiden ICC event with team green.

So going by this logic can Pakistan lift the ICC T20 WC 2024?

Kamas Kam sun to lo? Maybe you'll reach the semi's if idk? You listen to a world renowned coach?

These type of "get to know your new boss" meetings are beyond boring. Give them a break.

Oh bhai, they are not corporate Microsoft employees that are welcoming their new manager and earning a basic salary.

They are players that are trying to represent their nation and bring honor to it.

People need to learn sports profession isn't a joke. Otherwise why even take it as a profession? It's competitive, each meeting needs to be important.

Cup nahi Jeetna? Bas USA cake khanei kei lyei ja rahe hain? Is that why our players play cups now? To travel to a new country and sightsee?

For you and I, cricket is only a passion. For them, it's a job and a passion. And every job gets old and boring, even the "represent the nation" and "bringing it honour" one.

And people must require some time to get used to Kirsten's soft spoken South African English.

Cricket isn't a traditional job, it's a competitive sport.

Imagine if You said these words to christino Ronaldo in football, he'd laugh at you. Theirs a reason we are a medicore nation especially with this type of mindset.

What an irony Mr Kirsten would join the team just a fortnight before the T20 WC while he joined his IPL side much before than that.

So far it has been a bumpy ride for Gary Kirsten as Pakistan coach but can he have his first win as coach today against USA?
