Pakistan superstar among international talent in Big Bash drafts

June 10, 2025

Pakistan superstar Shaheen Afridi is among an impressive array of players available for the KFC BBL|15 and Weber WBBL|11 Overseas Player Draft on June 19 when the first lists of nominations were revealed today.

Afridi is certain to cause huge interest among BBL clubs with Brisbane Heat holding the number one pick and having the first chance to take the fast-bowling sensation.

Afridi’s fellow Pakistan stars Mohammad Rizwan, Haris Rauf and Shadab Khan are other high-profile players who have put their names forward for selection for KFC BBL|15.

Former England captain Heather Knight and countrywomen Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Bell and Danni Wyatt-Hodge are up for grabs for Weber WBBL|11, while Pakistan captain Fatima Sana, a bowling all-rounder, is hoping to be drafted for the first time.

The Big Bash Draft Hub, exclusively available in the Big Bash App features player nominations with up-to-date availability and retention status for each player as well as the latest draft news and information. More player nominations and international pre-signings will be revealed in the lead-up to the Draft.

This season’s draft has been brought forward to June to provide club’s more certainty about player selection as they use the available recruiting mechanisms to build their lists for the season to come.

With nominations now closed, more than 600 overseas players have put their names forward to be part of the WBBL and BBL seasons.

A nomination for the Draft indicates a player has not been pre-signed by any club.

Despite not being pre-signed, players eligible for retention may still be selected with their previous club’s retention pick in the Drafts.

These nominations follow the announcement of 14 pre-signed players to date across the clubs, with the remaining two to be announced soon.

Pre-signed overseas players:

Adelaide Strikers Jamie Overton Laura Wolvaardt
Brisbane Heat Colin Munro Nadine de Klerk

Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s General Manager Big Bash Leagues, said:

“We are very excited by the nominations for the Big Bash Leagues drafts including some global superstars who will add enormous intrigue as the clubs compete for the best available talent.

“Having household names such as Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, Heather Knight and Sophie Ecclestone nominate demonstrates the continuing appeal of the Big Bash Leagues to some of the world’s best players.

“Bringing the draft forward will provide more certainty for the clubs as they build their lists and give fans an early insight into the stars who will wear their team’s colours.

“We’re grateful to our partners Seven and Fox Sports who will ensure the draft is broadcast across multiple platforms keeping Big Bash fans engaged and entertained.

“We will have more exciting announcements in the weeks ahead as we reveal the full list of nominations and more pre-signed international players who will help light up the Big Bash Leagues this summer.”

Rizwan in Big Bash 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. News flash its called big bash league, not onside hoick league

Thank you BBL organisers for the banter we will have on your draft day :ROFLMAO:

Dw, Australia won't. He'll go unsold, like he did with the 100 and its his fault.

No franchise except for bonga Multan Sultans wants to hire an international keeper who insists, whines and cries about opening.

When you hire anyone in any organisation be it a sportsmen or employee or whatever, cultural fit and how you get along with your teammates is more important.

No franchise owner wants to deal with someone as stubborn.

Like imagine if the owner says "Ayt boys, i want you to go out their and maul the opposition, I won't tolerate any score below 200, ideally you should be targeting 230, Travis, Owens, you'll be the openers. Let's go boys".

Rizwan: No i am not happy, me opener. And I hope others can get to 230 for me.

I actually hope he gets signed for someone even in supplementary

It will be so fun seeing Aussie fans and vloggers roasting him or taking the mick afterwards when they witness first hand what a joke he is :ROFLMAO:

Surely Babar Azam should register?

He opened for PZ whilst making Mitchell Owen their big superstar bat at number 7! He is supposedly a bigger monster player than Mitchell Owen?

Yeah, but BBL reputation is at stake. Its viewed as the most explosive league.

IPL even tried to copy their template last year(not this year though) by curating video game road pitches.

The idea of big bash is to have extremely high scores and non stop six hitting. Rizwan in BBL would single handidely ruin the credibility of the league. Currently BBL is somewhat struggling for viewership. Its their only issue.

Their target market is audience retention and expansion. Rizwan will literally cause people to expand to New Zealand and run away from AU 🤣

@Rana But that does beg the question. Why would rizwan even sign up for BBL knowing full well Australia will not meet any of his demands and will ensure he goes unsold?

Does he really think that highly of himself? Why would any league sign him on? Even fun micky mouse bangladeshi leagues hire for six hitting at the bare minimum?

From what I recall last year…

Rizwan emotionally blackmailed his way into the Test side when he was booted out in place of Sarfaraz. He asked the management to give him an NOC to play BBL in December if he wasn’t needed for the Test squad, and this was him playing his bluff on them. They hinted to him that he will be required for the Test series so he just had to hold on for a bit.

What Rizwan does have is a chalaak agent I suppose. He may have been given some assurance by a franchise who might pick him as a replacement for some players otherwise you are right, I don’t see him wanting to even register knowing the humiliation that inevitably will follow of not being picked at all. The BBL social media handle is hyping his registration up a lot, so who knows?

The other thing is,

Rizwan at the moment needs some kind of press to stay relevant in T20s with his career very much on edge. He’s got that now with this registration announcement. It’s all part of the pr pressure these guys know how to apply in order to force him through into the national side.

Has Hassan Nawaz given his name? He can be a serious star there
He shouldnt register

Pakistan will need him in the next 6-12 months, and I don’t think he is suited to those decks or conditions as of yet

He should stick to the cricket he gets for Pakistan and keep developing towards his strength that will be required in Sri Lanka.

If he's not then it's even more important for him to play the league and it will improve his game very much.
It won’t improve him if he gets dropped after 3 games because he simply can’t handle to extra bounce.

He’s too young and important for Pakistan to be going mentally shot into the T20 World Cup.

Plenty of time to play this stuff in the future.

Why? He has issue with seam movement, not height and raw bounce?
Bro the square big boundaries will not suit his style even against spin.

He needs to develop a strong Cut and Pull first against seam. His main strength against it seems to be the long on-cover region he looks to target when the ball is pitched back. This will be exploited for sure by hard deck hitting bowlers

He has the right shots against spin, but he may end up holing out a lot more trying to heave the length balls in the square region.

It’s just a realistic observation, I would rather he skip this BBL with the World Cup so close.

This might be the year I retire the blast and become a big bash fan

Rizwan?????

What 🤣

Anyway. Would have loved to see Saim Ayub, Abrar Ahmed & Hassan Nawaz despite his limitations against pace.

However, Agha Ali Salman would have been low-key a smart pickup for any of these BBL teams especially with his improvements in white-ball cricket.

Usama Mir and Mohammad Hasnain among Pakistan players available for retention besides Haris Rauf

Are the Aussies so talentless nowadays that they need Babar and Rizwan in BBL?

England stars among final nominations for Big Bash Drafts

Clubs will compete for an array of outstanding international talent after the final list of nominations for Thursday’s KFC BBL|15 and Weber WBBL|11 drafts were released today.

Additionally, 15 of the 16 pre-signed players across both competitions have been announced including Babar Azam joining the Sydney Sixers as part of an influx of Pakistan talent into the BBL this season.

Nominations:

Among the prominent names in the final list of draft nominations are England internationals Jofra Archer, James Anderson, Alice Capsey and Maia Bouchier along with the returning Laurie Evans, Joe Clarke and Indian batter Yastika Bhatia.

Previously announced draft nominations include Pakistan stars Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, Haris Rauf and Shadab Khan as well as former England captain Heather Knight and countrywomen Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Bell and Danni Wyatt-Hodge.

Pre-signed players

All clubs except Hobart Hurricanes WBBL have announced the signing of one BBL and WBBL overseas player ahead of the drafts.

The players, signed for between one and three years, are:

Club BBL WBBL
Adelaide Strikers Jamie Overton Laura Wolvaardt
Brisbane Heat Colin Munro Nadine de Klerk
Hobart Hurricanes Chris Jordan TBC
Melbourne Renegades Tim Seifert Hayley Matthews
Melbourne Stars Tom Curran Marizanne Kapp
Perth Scorchers Finn Allen Sophie Devine
Sydney Sixers Babar Azam Amelia Kerr
Sydney Thunder Sam Billings Chamari Athapaththu

Pre-signed players must be selected by their club during the Draft with a pick that matches the salary band of their playing contract.

Under the Draft rules, clubs with a pre-signed player must select a minimum of two additional players in the Draft. Given most pre-signed slots have been filled, all but one club can now only pass on a maximum of one pick in the Draft.

Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s Executive General Manager, Big Bash Leagues, said:

“We’re absolutely thrilled by the quality of the players who have nominated for both the KFC BBL|15 and Weber WBBL|11 Drafts and this is matched by those who have pre-signed with the eight clubs.

“Babar Azam will be a fantastic addition to the competition this season at the Sixers and having iconic names such as Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, Heather Knight and Sophie Ecclestone on the table means the Draft will be fascinating viewing.

“The quality of the pool certainly vindicates our decision to bring this year’s draft forward to allow clubs to get a fast start on locking in overseas stars so they have certainty before they use the other mechanisms to build their teams.

“Thank you to all the players from across the globe who have demonstrated their commitment to the Big Bash Leagues by nominating and to their boards for making them available to compete in one of the world’s great T20 leagues.”

The Sydney Thunder has received picks 12 and 21 from the Perth Scorchers in return for picks 16 and 17.

I do have one question for Babar though.

Im happy he signed off for Sydney Sixers but if Steve Smith is his favourite player, then why is Babar so disinterested in test cricket 🤣🤣🤣.

Shaheen Shah Afridi has been picked by Brisbane Heat and he was the number 1 pick in BBL 2025 draft...

The eagle has landed.

Haris Rauf has also been retained by Melbourne Stars.

Mohammad RIzwan goes to Melbourne Renegades.

@Rana I think you should see this...

Round 2 picks:

Shadab Khan goes to Sydney Thunders.

Hassan Khan goes to the Renegades while Babar has already been drafted by Sydney Sixers.

Round 3 picks:

Hassan Ali goes to Adelaide Strikers.

I'm surprised no franchise picked saim ayub and Harris, but picked rizwan
Haris is way too inconsistent and saim hasnt actually set world on fire in t20s.

But well non selection of babar rizwan was used to mock them and tell us that rhey are of no use but now they both got picked now its useless.

Overseas players locked in at Big Bash Draft

Pakistan's Shaheen Shah Afridi will be one of the stars of KFC BBL|15 after the Brisbane Heat swooped on the left-arm speedster with the first pick in this year’s Big Bash Draft.

Afridi, rated as one of the best new-ball bowlers on the planet, was drafted alongside six countrymen including Babar Azam (pre-signed by the Sydney Sixers) and Mohammad Rizwan (Melbourne Renegades) who headline an influx of Pakistan talent.

The Melbourne Stars retained Haris Rauf after the Adelaide Strikers attempted to take the fast bowler with Pick 2, before settling on Luke Wood (Pick 3) to make it three quicks taken in succession to begin the draft.

Platinum Pre-Signed internationals Finn Allen (Perth Scorchers) and Chris Jordan (Hobart Hurricanes) were both taken in the first round, while the Sam Curran and Lockie Ferguson were first picked by the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder respectively.

The WBBL|11 Draft began in dramatic circumstances with four Retention Picks reshaping the first round.

England opener Sophia Dunkley was taken by the Sydney Sixers with the coveted first pick and Sophie Ecclestone (Adelaide Strikers) followed at Pick 2 before four Retention Picks were used across the next five selections.

Despite strong interest from other clubs, first round selections Jemimah Rodrigues (Brisbane Heat), Danni Wyatt-Hodge (Hobart Hurricanes), Heather Knight (Sydney Thunder) and Deandra Dottin (Melbourne Renegades) will all return to their previous homes.

In a helter-skelter opening round, England international Amy Jones (Melbourne Stars) and Sophie Devine (Perth Scorchers) were the first names off the draft board for their respective clubs.

Throughout both Drafts, 15 Pre-Signed Players were allocated, while five Retention Picks were also activated by clubs, blocking rivals from poaching top overseas talent.

In total, 47 players from across the globe have secured their places on Big Bash League club lists at today's KFC BBL|15 and Weber WBBL|11 Drafts.

Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia's Executive General Manager, Big Bash Leagues, said:

"The League congratulates and welcomes the 47 overseas players recruited across the eight clubs via the Weber WBBL|11 and KFC BBL|15 Drafts.

"Today’s Drafts brought plenty of action with some huge new names joining the competition, fan favourites returning to Clubs, and big moves with a number of players set to call a new Club home for the season ahead.

“We thank all players and their agents who nominated for this year's Drafts and congratulate and thank our clubs on the preparation for the event and the quality of lists they have compiled.

“Additionally, we are grateful for the support of our broadcast partners Seven and Foxtel and thank them for their hard work in bringing the Drafts to life."

Big bash is fixed

Big bash is fixed
I'm fine with the players being picked.

This is a league, Australia is a beautiful country and this is a good money making opportunity for them.

But they(Ba/Riz) should stick to Leagues now. Test for Ba/Riz, Odi for Babar and League t20 for Ba/Riz is plenty.

Theirs no reason to have Rizzu play in the odi or t20 squad and babar to play in t20.

Must be availability issue.
Naw its cause their not popular.

People hire in franchises for popularity, not for skill. Yes skill matters, you cant be a dud, but unless its IPL, most leagues are relaxed. They want their money worth for crowd attendance and how many people are willing to come to watch said player which will generate revenue.

Rizwan and Babar are more popular then Saim and Haris. That's an undeniable fact. These 2 have Captained Pakistan and have been representing in all formats since 2019.

Not to mention aussie owners clearly watch test cricket and have seen the karachi test + Rizwan in the latest aussie tour.

Saim and haris are nobodies in grand retrospect.

Heat captain Nathan McSweeney said following about Shaheen Afridi:

"He loves bowling in fast, bouncy conditions and the Gabba’s exactly that,"

"Pakistan had some great success last time they were out here against Australia so we're looking for more of the same from him.

"Thankfully he's on our side, I'm not going to have to face him this year."

While Seccombe heaped praise on Mohammad Rizwan:

"Mohammad Rizwan comes with a wealth of international experience, so that's what we're excited about … he'll help in the batting innings, controlling the innings,"

BBL walay pagal hain. RizBar ko pick karliya aur humray handsome Saim aur Haris ko ignore kardiya.
BBL is fixed bhai jaan.. BBL has taken money from babar and riz agents so they can get selected.

Lol so Babar and Rizwan get selected for BBL and his fans start doing bhrangra and believe that the quality of BBL will experience an overnight shift?

First of all realise that this season could either be the season that turns ba/riz career around and brings them back into the t20 side or kills their career's forever if they dont perform.

If they fail then people will naturally start questioning their place in both odi and test sides as well especially if they botch WI and botch another wtc cycle.

Australian pitches are not made for Pakistani players and it will be much tougher for both rizbabar to score runs here but if they do, they will certainly be knocking on the door to make a comeback. That is why it is an important event for both of them.

To mei kya karoo? Ask the Australian government to make phattas for Rizwan and Babar? They themselves signed up 😭😭😭.

Their failures or their success will be reflected on them.

Brother you cant fool me, ik what you trying to do. If ba/riz succeed you'll argue for their place in the side and for them to come back.

If Ba/Riz fail you'll say aus wasnt suited for them 🤣.

Them themsleves applied lol, they obviously know what's in store lol.

Australian pitches are not made for Pakistani players and it will be much tougher for both rizbabar to score runs here

To mei kya karoo? Ask the Australian government to make phattas for Rizwan and Babar? They themselves signed up 😭😭😭.

Their failures or their success will be reflected on them.

I don't care about pitches. I am stating facts bro. Saim and haris did not make it, it means BBL franchises did not want them in their squads or whatever.

Babar and riz have an opportunity to perform on a grand stage. BBL is no joke.

Ha tu samaj gya na kafi hai .. but koi kharida ni 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 :kp
I just want people to articulate and formulated well thought out logical argumentation. That is all.

Their is nothing wrong with establishing consistency with everyone in a harmonious fashion.

Australian pitches are not made for Pakistani players and it will be much tougher for both rizbabar to score runs here but if they do, they will certainly be knocking on the door to make a comeback. That is why it is an important event for both of them.
No matter what RizBar do, haters will always hate I am afraid.

To be honest, I was more looking forward to seeing which team Fatima Sana ends up with. Poor lass didn't even get picked.

On a side note: BBL has for sometime struggle to gain serious profit, so from the organisation & cricket Australia perspective, roping in some of the biggest names in Pakistan cricket would raise some levels in income. Plus the full availability of Pakistan was also bonus.

However if they wanted some serious T20 players from Pakistan, Agha Ali Salman, Saim Ayub, Mohammad Haris even Abrar Ahmed would have been good picks. But BBL went for the popularity picks. However, Shaheen, Rauf & Shadab are good picks. Hasan Ali could go either way whereas the Rizwan & Babar are not suited to T20 cricket at all.
