Bollywood's obsession with Pakistan

I finally gave in and saw Dhurandhar a couple of days back. Not a bad movie...though obviously more focused on spectacle than any story telling. I was concerned that I'd get bored with the run time but it wasn't too bad to be honest. They could've definitely tightened it by dropping the love story and all the Doval and Modi propaganda. Would've made for a better, crisper movie even if it still was mostly fluff.

More interestingly, I saw a couple of Pakistani discussions on the movie. One was particularly interesting where the host walked around in Lyari talking to folks there about it - what was true, what exaggerated. He even interviewed a nephew of Rehman Baloch to talk about the movie.

Couple of things stuck me
- The filmmakers seem to have captured the visuals of Lyari pretty well. The sense of dilapidation and age seems very real based on the video I saw. Even the energy and rawness comes through
- Everybody the host talked to on the streets of Lyari seems to have seen the movie. I had no idea Indian cinema was so accessible in Pakistan.

TBF...its not only Shah Rukh Khan but many in India feels 'his walid' has won whenever Pakistan wins a game.

SRK to his credit at least had the guts to speak the truth.

:rabada2

The Khans of Bollywood don't really have much choice to speak the "truth", if they don't follow the hindutva script they get Shiv Sena protests erupting through the streets of their home nation.

Khans of Bollywood...that is the key. We all wait to see Kumars or Kapoors to be given similar chance in Pakistan be it in cricket or cinema.

Keep measuring yourselves against Pakistan. One day there will be a hindutva version of Sharia law too if you strive hard enough. 👌

The thread is called 'Bollywood obsession with Pakistan'.

You being a Pakistani said Khans are scared to speak Truth in India.

So its a natural follow up question that at least there are Khans in Indian entertainment sector. How many Kumars are there in Karachiwood?

Why act defensive when ask this inconvenient question?

What is defensive about it? Firstly I am not Pakistan, so there is nothing to defend. Secondly, why don't you address what I said. Why do Indians measure themselves against Pakistan? You could just have said Indians don't care about Pakistani standards because you are quite happy with your own. But you didn't did you?

1. Please leave it to me to decide what I can or cannot say. I am fully aware of what to say and when.

2. I have already addressed your question about why I made a comparison with Pakistan:

2.a Because this thread itself is about Bollywood’s obsession with Pakistan.

2.b Because you claimed that the Khans do not have a voice in India. I was simply pointing out that they have not only had a voice but have also been given opportunities and gone on to become superstars in India. So please stop the fear-mongering about the Khans being silenced—they are clearly flourishing. How many Hindus are there in Pak film industry? This is a natural follow up question in a thread discussing about Bollywood and Pakistan

Bollywood obsession with Pakistan is not related to Bollywood's standards though. Unless you think Indians don't have their own standards maybe?

Just like you are waiting to see a Dalit superstar in Bollywood? #FarkTohHai :inti
Notable Dalit Talents in Indian Cinema:
  • Divya Bharti: A major A-list actress in the early 1990s, Bharti was from the Ravidassia (Dalit) community. She was considered a potential superstar before her untimely death.
  • Johnny Lever: A highly successful and well-known comedian in Hindi cinema for decades, he belongs to the Mala (Scheduled Caste) community.
  • Kanjibhai Rathod: Considered the first commercially successful director in Indian cinema (primarily silent films and early talkies), he was from a Dalit background and directed numerous films in the 1920s and 30s.
  • Neeraj Ghaywan: A prominent contemporary filmmaker, Ghaywan is one of the few artists in the Hindi film industry to openly acknowledge his Dalit identity. His film Masaan featured a Dalit protagonist, a rarity in Bollywood.
  • Nagraj Manjule: Known for directing the critically and commercially successful Marathi film Sairat, he is a prominent Dalit director and writer.
  • Pa. Ranjith: A notable South Indian director and filmmaker whose works, such as Kabali, often incorporate themes of Dalit rights and identity.
  • Tun Tun (Uma Devi Khatri): A well-known comedian and actress in Hindi cinema, she was of a Dalit background.

Btw, you jumped onto defending @Cpt. Rishwat faster than light. So much Lowe  :thumbsup

So these are considered superstars? I didn't realize they were anywhere near as big as the Khans or the ones you want to see in Pakistani movie industry which itself is struggling. Try again, Raju. :yk :inti

Indian cinema and Bollywood always have their own standards and that is why Khans have always given equal opportunity irrespective of whatever is happening in Pakistan. Indian audience also supported them and made them superstars irrespective of their religious faith. So dont worry about India or Indians standard.

However, when I listen to hypocrites like you try who says 'Oh Khans have no voice in India' and try to paint a gloomy picture, a mirror has to be shown about your own country & community. That is simple human psychology and a natural follow up question. If your own house is in gutter, you must not question about neighbouring pipe leak.

There are lots of factors in becoming superstars. This also says muslim actors were given more opportunity than Dalits. I was not aware of this but will keep in mind going forward.

However the point remains, Dalits got chance in Indian films. How many Hindus/Sindhis in Pak film industry? Why so difficult this simple question?

They got their opportunities when Congress was in power, not BJP, so why isn't that being highlighted by you? The Pakistani film industry itself is struggling, its popular actors, like Fawad Khan, aren't getting major projects and realistically, how many talented Hindu or Sindhi actors are there in Pakistan who can perform at that level? Can you name some? Bollywood is full of talented muslim actors, infact they were the ones to make it so big. :inti

Tu Rehne De bhai. You will never admit that there is a discrimination against minorities exists in Pakistan and always find an excuse to defend them. Pakistan film industry is struggling? Has it always struggled since its inception? What about its cricket team? Why only 3 non muslim cricketers in its entire cricket history? Among those 3 - one got converted and another complained about discrimination. Any minority Pak poster here in PP like we have you, Hitman etc from India?

I know this is a Pak forum and you all gang up to me but lets be honest you all know I ask the right questions.

Then why don't you name the players and actors who were actually discriminated against in Pakistan? Or are you suggesting a quota system where Hindu players are selected merely to appease India? And are you really implying that players like Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj are quota selections, and that the Khans of Bollywood have no talent at all?

Maybe Hindus currently living in Pakistan or Bangladesh are simply not producing actors or players at that level right now. If they truly have the talent, they will make a name for themselves just like Danish Kaneria from Pakistan and Litton Das from Bangladesh did. :rabada2

I am about to step into 2026. You can stay in 2025 for a few more hours, Raju. :yk :inti
