What's new

Can Babar Azam join the group of Fab 4 and make it a Fab 5?

Babar can surpass Root. Root is better due to experience and longevity right now.

Love the way Babar is being hyped by the Australian commentators.

Babar's attacking game compared to Root, Williamson and Kohli is better.
His ability to hit boundaries against good bowlers is also higher the three mentioned.
Smith is still better in every aspect.

So Babar is basically #2 in tests just not part of fab 5 but 2..

If you want my ranking on current form you just have to read the previous page.

An overall ranking of the batsmen based on current form is :

Smith
daylight
Kohli/Babar
Williamson

So Babar is second.. but Kohli is also second, Kohli should be grateful he is being named alongside Babar

This is after hitting a few few fours of Steyn and scoring a century in a practice match, imagine what will happen the day he scores an actual ton outside of home against a decent attack? People here are fun man perhaps a bit more than usual of late. The delusion is deeper than ocean, higher than mountains:))

Please don't insult Babar, Kohli can never match his mighty average of 35, Babar is a uber legend already, better than Bradman, there you go, I said it lol.

They did similar with UA ,Nasir,Shehzad and many current posters were guilty of that.. but in honesty even when Babar was bashed by many Pak posters , Indian posters incl myself defended Babar as one who looks most stable on crease and he defn has the potential but again 2 years too early..he is getting there.

'Current Form' is it? So how many tons has Babar scored riding on his 'Current form' brother?

On current form :
Babar is better than Kohli in T20's, he had the better ODI world cup.
In test both are having a 50 average year but Kohli is better due to experience and also because Babar is yet to score consistently.

Above is the all-format record since the beginning of 2018.

With one Test hundred, you obviously can't put Babar in the same bracket as the rest across formats.

Anyway, during this period he's surpassed 50 30 times in 77 innings, that's seriously good consistency. The conversion rate needs work, there's 5 scores in the 90s. Though 10 fifties are in T20Is, where you're less likely to convert.

Not doubting his talent, never did and agree that he is a genuine top 5 in limited overs based on recent form, but in tests he is so far behind that this is not even funny.

The B in Fab Four stands for Babar 'The Bobby' Azam

He's proved it today.

So all haters must come here as i serve freshly baked humble pies to them.

He's successfully replaced Joe Root in Fan 4 with this knock.

Well done :14:

Bats like a soldier. Stings the opposition like a bichhoo. He's no ajnabee to big scores.

Bobby. Remember the name.

Not in test cricket.

Bobby is potentially a 55+ average test batsman, bare minimum in this era to be considered a member of Fab 4

Warner is already a Test great, dominated a WC and has won Aus many matches, probably even more than Kane has for us.

Rohit is one of the GOAT ODI batsmen who has dominated a WC and performed well at ICC events. His Test record on paper looks great and he has 4-5 100s.

You can say Babar is better than Root. There is no way I'm putting him ahead of Rohit and Warner, I regard both really highly.

Both are bonafide match winners and have the numbers and performances to back it up.

On current form shouldn’t you include Rohit then.
People sleep on Rohit and Warner.

Both are better than Root and at times are better than the other 3.

Warner will retire with a test average below 50

Same with Hitman

Bobby 55+ easily

in tests? babar is far better than rohit and warner. warner is a flat track home bully.

in odi yes the former 2 have results to back it up but based on potential I would still put babar above both.

Babar has done nothing in Test cricket.

Warner has 20+ centuries in Tests and Rohit has 6 tons in 30 innings.

Nothing to do with the potential in international cricket,u have to back it with numbers.By ur logic there is no better batsmen in the history of the game potential than rohit sharma other than abd.

But Babar has more "potential" so he's part of Fab 4+1
I always thought it was disrespectful how Warner was left out of the conversation where at times he was genuinely the best batsmen in the world. Rohit has made a case recently with his runs in the WC and in Test cricket.

The dude single handily beat us the last time we toured, scored runs for fun against us and at a great clip.

It isn't an Aussie summer without Warner scoring 2-4 100s at a brisk pace these days.

Its a good century but the pressure was off.

I refuse to rate knocks made when there is nothing to lose.

If he had batted like that in 1st innings, Pakistan would still be in this Test.

But on to the next test and lets see.

He is still going to be an ATG but this knock was without any pressure in the world.

ATG is a bit much, I think only Kohli, Smith and Stokes are there from this generation.

Did you watch Warner in the Ashes - that's why he's not rated in elite class. Same issue with Rohit. Its Smith and Kohli and then the rest can tussle for positions 3-6, which could change day to day. Babar is not there yet by any means but the reason people talk about him in that context is because of his ceiling. He is the best young batsman in the world and is single handedly carrying the Pakistan batting line-up, on-top of that he is pure class to watch so its natural for people to prospectively place him in their elite lists, etc as he is the only one in the current crop that can maybe match Smith and Kohli. Warner, Root, Williamson, Rohit, etc are all unbelievable players in their own right but are too old at their respective stages of their careers to mount a challenge (Rohit is an interesting exception, simply because of how freakishly talented the guy is). Having said that, as of now there is still a long way to go for Babar and he potentially might never get there either.

Upcoming home test series against bd and sl is very vital for his test career .No offense to both side but he can scored atleast 3 to 4 test hundred which will improve his hundred column which is too low for liking

So player with average of 36 is better than the guy with average 48 because he scored an inconsequential 100?

Love to watch Babar bat, but he is yet to play a match-defining innings in any Test - so clearly he ain’t there yet. I agree though that the Fab 4 terminology is a mistake - its Fab 2 or 3 (depending on how you see it) followed by proven match winners like Root, Pujara, Warner, Watting, Taylor & then future potentials like Babar or Mayank Agarwal & Labuschagne.

Is it first time happen in aus or you saw something new ?aus are unbeaten at gabba from last 30 year let that first sink in

Doesn't change the fact that the track was flat and batting friendly.

To join Fab 4, he needs some tough runs. This hundred could have been scored by a dozen more batsmen, there's nothing special here to elevate his level to Fab 4 or 5.

Hate to break it you, Rohit has been on par if not better than Kohli for a period of 4-5 months starting with the WC and around the time he started opening for India in Tests. Across formats he was better than Smith too during this run.

Rishab Pant has better and grittier hundreds, so maybe it's a Fab 6 now.

But then everyone gets these hundreds regularly, so maybe Fab 25 will be a better term. :D

I don't rate rohit because he sucks in swing conditons and so does warnee. You have to be a complete player to be rated as an ATG.

babar has that potential to be an ATG cause he has no weaknesses. He just needs the numbers to back his game now.

Azam is not even close to being a part of the Fab Four. The Fab Four was all about the next generation test players and so far all Azam is in tests is a very talented prospect.

Here is the link to the Martin Crowe article that spawned the label.

https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/21431212/martin-crowe-test-cricket-young-fab-four

Note in here it is talking about tests and even mentions tests in the title.

Yes Babar looks like he will become one of the best test batsmen in the world but he isn't even close yet. Forget the Fab Four, he hasn't done enough to bring himself in the the discussion for top 10 test batsman so far.

Let him score at least 10 tons to deserve a mention in the same sentence with the fab 4, as of now he is not even a top 10 test bat.

Warner is already a Test great, dominated a WC and has won Aus many matches, probably even more than Kane has for us.

Agree completely.

Not 10 after making 20 tons and some of them in tough conditions, to be considered as same sentence with the fab 4.

I personally don’t believe in the fab 4 anymore. Kohli is easily in a league of his own when you take all three formats into consideration. Smith is easily in a league of his own when you take only Tests into consideration. Root and Williamson are both top players in Tests and ODIs, and then you have Rohit who is arguably the greatest Limited Overs opener of all time.

Babar will never be as good as Kohli across formats or as good as Smith in Tests or as good as Rohit in Limited Overs. However, he is very close to becoming a top Test and ODI player like Root and Williamson.

No weaknesses? I don't think such a player has born yet

A bit harsh to be honest, it was a fine century and he didn't repeat his mistake of the first innings, sign of an intelligent batsman who can learn and evolve.

Yes, because he is a class player.

So I judge him a bit harshly.

He has the ability to eclipse lots of batsmen but until he starts scoring when the pressure is on, I really can't say he has evolved.

Nevertheless, a century is a century so well done to him.

:))) In John McEnroe's words, "You cannot be serious".

wow delusion has no limits for these guys bro.. I mean one guy has 27 test centuries.. 6 in Australia, 2-3 in England, and atleast one in South Africa and NewZealand.. Has scored runs for fun all around the world and score centuries in his first tour there. Another has scored his second ton today and somehow he is at par with the first one. LOL...This is trolling of next level.. :cobra:cobra I am bookmarking this comment and thread. This would a fun thread to revisit 3-4 years down the line...

Whilst 4-5 months isn’t enough to put him in that category I do believe he has the talent to to enter that class if he plays some clutch overseas knocks however he is on the wrong side of 30.

I’m surprised he never made it to that level anyway considering his talent. It’s a shame really.

In the same match Warner scored 150 odd..

Rohit and Warner have a far better claim to being there than Babar.
I remember 3-4 years into international cricket people used to abuse Rohit a lot. Thats about the same time Bobby has spent so far internationals

I rate performances and winning matches. Warner and Rohit in that regard are two of the best in the world, on a similar level to Kohli and Smith.

If we're speaking batsmenship and technique, that's different. But being the best - performances and winning matches is what matters most.

We saw how good Warner was during the Ashes
Yeah and he smashed Pakistan into the ground in this Test, nearly outscoring Pakistan's entire first innings score.

People remember that one bad series but forget his good WC and his previous Ashes performances.

I remember 3-4 years into international cricket people used to abuse Rohit a lot. Thats about the same time Bobby has spent so far internationals
Didn't Rohit lead India to a T20 WC and ICC CT?

During this period, Rohit was the best batsmen on the planet, at very least top 2.

There isn't a more dominant or destructive player in the game today than him.

People really undersell these players because of their troubles against the swinging ball, when that ball stops moving they'll win you matches.

Good knock by Babar. Overall, a poor performance from Pakistan.

It seems finally Pakistan have found the next all-round great batsmen after Javed Miandad and Inzamam-ul-haq.

I rate performances and winning matches. Warner and Rohit in that regard are two of the best in the world, on a similar level to Kohli and Smith.

If we're speaking batsmenship and technique, that's different. But being the best - performances and winning matches is what matters most.
What if your team is lesser?

Kohli is playing in the best test team in the world, can you show me the match winnings innings in SENA?

Yeah and he smashed Pakistan into the ground in this Test, nearly outscoring Pakistan's entire first innings score.

People remember that one bad series but forget his good WC and his previous Ashes performances.

Yes he is good but m not convinced by his test performances away from home.
I remember him dancing on indian pitches as well in tests

Warner is an excellent batsmen in his comfort zone but you won't call him a great test player. Won't you not pick both Langer and Hayden ahead of him for an Australian opening slot?

Kohli in LOIs is almost unmatched, in Tests he's done reasonably well. Though I think he's probably won less matches for India than Smith or Warner have for Aus. After them, I can't think of anyone off the top of my head who has won their team more matches with the bat.

Didn't Rohit lead India to a T20 WC and ICC CT?

Yes rohit is an excellent odi player now. His three double centuries at home on belters add to his aura.
But what special did he do in T20 WC. my memory tells it was Gautam in the finals

I would, but he's still great nonetheless. You don't win your country as many Tests as he has without being great in your craft. I think he'll finish an Aussie great if he isn't already and has the potential to be an ATG if he's able to have a 3-4 dominant series against top teams away.

2007 WC, I remember him doing quite well as a young player.

I wouldn't*

He had one good innings against SA, and scored a 20 odd in the finals. He did well, but other players contributed more to India's victory.
I checked his performances, 50 against SA (essential KO game?) and 30 @ 187 in a low scoring Final is a good turn out for a young player.

in tests? babar is far better than rohit and warner. warner is a flat track home bully.

in odi yes the former 2 have results to back it up but based on potential I would still put babar above both.

Potential is not performance. Babbar doesnot even avg 40 in tests. He has been rank avg in tests. Miles behind Warner and even behind Rohit who himself is finding his feet in test.

Honestly, he won't even be considered an Australian great let alone an ATG. He is an excellent ODI batsmen but in test cricket, he is just a very good batsmen, with an average of 46 and away average close to 34, having played half of his games on some really flat Australian wickets.

I am not even sure how he would have even fared if he had played on the Australian wickets of 90s to mid 00s. A match winner in his comfort zone but a complete liability outside that.

Yes sir understood.

Let's do a country wise breakdown of test bats I would pick over Babar. Making a test XI doesn't make sense as I will have to include bowlers so many deserving bats will be left out.

India: Kohli, Pujara, Rahane, Rohit (Yes, averages more than Babar and Babar is no world beater overseas), Pant (Gave real performances in Eng and Aus, not just few pretty cover drives).

Pak: Azhar, Shafiq (Albeit inconsistent but performed against better bowlers in tougher conditions)

SL : Kusal Perera ( A bit debatable perhaps but he is a match winner on his day)

BD : Shakib (Achieved much more than Babar with the bat)

Aus: Smith, Warner

SA: None

Eng : Root, Stokes (as a pure bat), Butler.

NZ : Kane, Taylor

I am trying to guess how a hatter like you is feeling right now after Babar just scored a hundred at the Gabba coming in at 25-3 against Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood and Lyon.
