Cricket in USA

There is hardly any superstar playing.

If they get some big names, there can be some crowds. Otherwise, unlikely.

Cricket followers in USA so far has been deprived of good cricket in stadium, they will show up in big numbers even without any big names in the team. Indians in particular, they have nothing else to do on the weekends. They generally don't go to beaches, don't play golf and don't watch local games like baseball and football like the other American do.

How come you forgot to mention the true hero of the match for USA , Attock born Ali Khan who ran through Jersey batting with a blistering new-ball spell in which he claimed 5 for 7 in his first three overs - including three wickets in four balls in the sixth over - before coming back at the death to wipe out the tail, eventually finishing with 7 for 32 in 9.4 overs.

Well done, USA (for making it to qualifier).

They are now a very good associate side. Not at the same level as likes of Scotland and Netherlands but improving.

Three players have been penalised for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off clash between USA and Jersey played on 4 April.

USA and Jersey played out an intense Qualifier Play-off match in Windhoek on Tuesday in a game that oscillated between the two sides throughout. Chasing 231, Jersey mounted comebacks on multiple occasions against USA, who needed the win to book a Qualifier berth.

USA eventually held their nerve to win the game by 25 runs and had Ali Khan to thank for his magical spell of 7/42.

The high-voltage clash saw three players – USA's Ali Khan and Jasdeep Singh, and Jersey’s Elliot Miles – penalised for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Khan was guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

The pacer received a demerit point which means he will miss the next two games – either T20I or ODI, whichever comes first – that USA play after having accumulated three demerit points previously. The total four demerit points over a 24-month cycle have been converted to a two-match suspension as per article 7.6 of the Code. He has been also fined 15% of his match fee.

His teammate Jasdeep Singh has been fined 30% of his match fee and received two demerit points for breaching Article 2.12 of the Code, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match.”

Jersey's Elliot Miles has been penalised 15% of his match fee and handed a demerit point for breaching Article 2.3 of the Code, which relates to “use of an audible obscenity during an International Match.”

There will be no formal hearing as all three players accepted the charges levelled by the on-field umpires Andrew Louw and Claus Schumacher, and third umpire David Odhiambo.

It's the world's biggest sports market and the world's second-most popular sport, so cricket and the United States should be a perfect match.

Cricket has a long history in the US – almost 100 years longer, in fact, than the sport's arrival in Australia in 1803.

One of the more obscure cricketing facts is that the United States played in the first international sporting event in the modern world, let alone first international cricket match.

It was September 1844 at St George's Club Ground in Manhattan, New York, when they went down to Canada by 23 runs in front of more than 20,000 spectators, sparking a rivalry for the Auty Cup that still exists today.

While cricket enjoyed periods of growth among early Americans, including a "golden age" around the start of the 20th century when Philadelphian swing bowling pioneer Bart King was at the peak of his powers, baseball eventually won out in the clash of bat-and-ball sports around the beginning of World War I, and the game declined in popularity.

But the T20 format, along with an influx of immigrants from South Asian nations and the West Indies, has sparked a resurgence in popularity for cricket in America, with some estimates having the number of cricket fans in the US as high as 30 million.

They're also co-hosting the next men's T20 World Cup in June 2024 and there's a push to get the sport in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

It all sounds promising, but professional cricket leagues have been tried and failed in the US before, and administratively the governing body has been 'disorganised … and a bit of a mess' for some time.

So, what makes 2023 and the new Major League Cricket tournament set to launch in July any different from Pro Cricket that never returned after its first season in 2004, or the Cricket All-Stars one-off series played on baseball fields in 2015?

The primary advantage, according to Major League Cricket tournament director Justin Geale, is previous attempts were "drop in" and didn't start at the grassroots to try and build a domestic structure.

The Minor League Cricket tournament is coming into its third season, and last year boasted 26 teams from across the country taking part in around 200 matches featuring a host of expats with first-class experience, including former Sri Lankan international Shehan Jayasuriya, former Melbourne Renegade and Indian under-19 captain Unmukt Chand, and South Africans Andries Gous and David White, all of whom were taken in the recent MLC domestic player draft.

The depth of local talent has "pleasantly surprised" Cricket Victoria high performance manager Graham Manou and Cricket NSW Head of Male Cricket Michael Klinger who, through each state organisation's respective partnerships with MLC sides San Francisco Unicorns and Washington Freedom, are tasked with building their franchise's cricket programs ahead of the inaugural season.

"The All-Stars where 'Warnie' (Shane Warne) and (Sachin) Tendulkar came and played some exhibition games was great and that was a great way to see your heroes, it was played in a baseball stadium, it wasn't necessarily representing what cricket was," Geale told cricket.com.au from his home near Chicago.

The first season of the MLC from July 13-30 this year will mostly be played at the league's new 7200-seat purpose-built Grand Prairie Stadium near Dallas, the former home of the Texas AirHogs baseball team which has been converted into a cricket ground after they folded in 2020.

It's hoped that each MLC franchise will have their own home stadium by 2025, with Washington Freedom partnering with George Mason University to investigate the feasibility of a new multi-purpose cricket and baseball facility, while San Francisco Unicorns have commenced studies for a 15,000-seat complex on a 14-acre site at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds in San José.

"There's an expectation here in America that we need to do it properly, which takes time and money," Geale says.

"It's a slow burn, it's going to take us a while, I'm hoping within three years we can get to a place where teams can play home and away, that's the other way we can grow the game.

"While there's a huge market here for cricket now, and that's mainly expats, I think the opportunity to convert new people to the game is huge.

"I'm a bit biased and I love cricket, but I also love baseball.

"However, baseball is pretty slow. They go for about the same amount of time, a T20 and a baseball game, we're scoring 180-200 (in cricket) and that could be 2-0 (in baseball).

"There's some really good ways we can convert American people but they are also a very sophisticated sports consumer,

"They have an expectation when they come to a stadium what that experience is going to be like, so we need to try and replicate that as soon as we can."

Another advantage has been the level of investment in the new league, with at least 20 of America's top business leaders – including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Adobe chairman and CEO Shantanu Narayen – backing the $120m start-up tournament.

(Chennai), with GMR Group, the co-owner of the Delhi Capitals, partnering with the Seattle Orcas while Cricket Victoria and Cricket NSW are high performance partners for the San Francisco and Washington-based teams.

"The level of investment we have, being privately funded out of Silicon Valley, you've got some pretty high-net-worth individuals … that are personally invested in this," Geale says.

With several global T20 superstars including Aussies Aaron Finch, Marcus Stoinis (both San Francisco) and Mitch Marsh, along with South Africa's Quinton de Kock (both Seattle Orcas) and Anrich Nortje and Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga (both Washington Freedom) signing on for the inaugural MLC season, the key ingredients for success (investment, talent and supporter base) are in place.

But like any new business or product, the challenge facing the MLC, and more broadly the governing body, USA Cricket, is adoption.

How, over time, do you convince American kids to pick up a cricket bat rather than a baseball glove or basketball? How do you get cricket into American schools to ensure the current growth in popularity doesn't die with this generation of fans?

"The first thing is to give it a progression so there is a career or a future in it," Geale says.

"College and high school sport here is everything.

"A longer-term play is obviously to get cricket into some schools and look at scholarships. That's something we're definitely invested in, USA Cricket as well.

"None of this is going to happen overnight, but we all recognise that given the size of the population it wouldn't take much to convert some of those juniors.

"The current crop of under-19s we have here (are) really good players. So there is a private academy and volunteer network across the country that just needs help, and that will come from exposure and growing the game."

Manou says Cricket Victoria, through their relationship with the Unicorns, is also starting to build a connection with the three Bay Area minor league teams to help develop their players, coaches and cricket in their local community.

"At some point I imagine there will be a real strong opportunity from a community cricket perspective to help them develop school programs to make it a mainstream sport in America … which is their dream," he says.

"I think the first few years will be difficult for teams to really build their fan base because not too many games are being played in the home states.

"But once the facilities are built across the country and you find that home-and-away style competition, I think that's where you will really start to see growth, particularly from a supporter and fan base perspective."

So with all the market forces and stakeholders pointing in the right direction, only time will tell if cricket and the United States are meant to be.

"If it doesn't happen now it's not going to happen, cricket in this country," Geale says.

"For so many years the word potential has been bandied around. It's a terrible word when it's not used, and I think we haven't fulfilled that to now.

"That's been for many reasons but I think right now the timing is right and everything's coming together at the same time.

"So if it doesn't work now, well, I'm out of a job but also I worry about the future because I think there's been so many false dawns here."

Major League Cricket (MLC) is set to debut in the U.S. this summer and the league is "hoping to score big," according to ABC's Ashan Singh. The “sport boasts 2.5 billion fans worldwide and in south Asian countries like India and Pakistan cricket is more than a sport, it’s a religion.” MLC L.A. Knight Riders’ Unmukt Chand said of playing in the U.S., “Everyone knows in the world that there’s something big happening in America and they all want to be a part of it.” MLC S.F. Unicorns’ Liam Plunkett said when the “chance came to be involved in cricket here it was crazy and I jumped at the chance.” Singh said MLC is also trying to “develop homegrown talent” in the U.S., though it still “feels surreal we’re talking about cricket in the U.S.”

Major League Cricket (MLC) management has reached out to senior officials of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) with a request for national players to participate in the league.

According to sources, PCB has given the green signal to the MLC management for the inclusion of national players in the league.

As part of a compromise, the PCB has set a condition before the MLC authorities instead of granting NOCs to Pakistani players. PCB has demanded a fee of USD 25,000 in case any national player is selected in the MLC draft.

National players who participate in the league will be required to pay a compensation fee of $25,000 to the PCB.

“We will grant permission to Pakistani players once this condition is fulfilled,” said a PCB representative. MLC has requested time to consider fulfilling the PCB’s condition.

The Major League Cricket tournament is scheduled to take place in the United States from July 13th to July 30th and will feature top cricketers from across the world.

A handful of Pakistani players are in consideration to play in the inaugural USA-based Major League Cricket (MLC). Their fate over participation in the tournament, however, rests entirely with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The likes of Azam Khan and Imad Wasim (non-contracted) have already found suitors in principle, the form of Seattle Orcas, co-owned by the GMR Group, who hold a significant stake in the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise - Delhi Capitals (DC).

In recent times, Pakistani players have not been involved in franchise leagues that boast investment from IPL franchises, primarily the SA20 and ILT20.

While the primary reason for their absence was put down to a busy international schedule, a case could also be made with respect to the Indian-based franchises that might have been reluctant to include Pakistani players in their ranks.

Australian wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, Moises Henriques and Adam Zampa have become the latest Australia players who are set to feature in the inaugural edition of the United States T20 tournament. Henriques will take up the captaincy role for the Washington Freedom franchise. The 36-year-old has led the Big Bash League franchise the Sixers to back-to-back titles in 2019-20 and 2020-21. He could still be joined by two more BBL teammates as opening batter Josh Philippe and fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis are also being linked to the Washington franchise for the July tournament.

On the other hand, Australia's star white-ball spinner Adam Zampa is also set to join the Kolkata Knight Riders-owned franchise, Los Angeles Knight Riders. While Matthew Wade is another to have signed with an MLC club.

Zampa and Wade who have spent the past two months in the Indian Premier League outfits Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans respectively.

Zampa has claimed eight wickets in six matches for the Royals, while the versatile wicketkeeper-batter has struggled to make his way into the playing XI of the defending champions. Former India wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha has kept him out of the side for almost the entire season.

Till now, Washington has announced the most number of overseas signings out of the six MLC franchises with Henriques joining South African pair of Anrich Nortje and Marco Jansen, New Zealand's Glenn Phillips and Adam Milne, and Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga.

CNSW Head of Male Elite Cricket Michael Klinger, has been tasked with heading the Washington Freedom's high-performance program has said that he was "pleasantly surprised" with the quality of players in the US while speaking to cricket.com.au.

"The talent is there, there's no doubt about that. There's a lot of ex-players from the subcontinent who've played international cricket or been part of IPL franchises or PSL (Pakistan Super League) franchises," Klinger said.

"There were players who had been in first-class systems in the subcontinent, first-class systems in South Africa who left for different reasons. So there was definitely a positive feel about the quality that was there and that they'd be able to match it against some of our high quality overseas players as well," Klinger concluded.

Babar is in Baltimore , while he is definitely the best batting talent in a long time Pakistan has produced but man his off field personality leaves a lot to be desired.

New Delhi: The ICC is mulling over shifting the venue of the 2024 T20 World Cup from West Indies and USA to England owing to the lack of infrastructure development in the USA.

"There is a situation at hand. The current infrastructure situation in the USA is not very encouraging and it is likely that the ICC could well swap the hosts for 2024 and 2030 edition of the event. It will also allow USA Cricket to get the infrastructure in order before 2030 and allow them to set the house in order too.

Right now, it will be a rushed process to get the venues ready. England were already allotted the 2030 World Cup and they, unlike other nations, can host an event in June-July," says a report in News18.

That would be super unfortunate, but understandable.

US is all in for soccer wc, I doubt tax breaks etc will be given for this.

Don’t know why they’re even wasting their time in the US. 90% of Americans don’t even know the sport cricket exists and that isn’t going to change. Basketball and Gridiron are far more entertaining and they’ve already got Baseball and Hockey to cover the boring ball and stick game.

Sohail Khan Bags 4 Wickets in 4 Deliveries, Sets Up New York Warriors’ Win Against Atlanta Riders

Lauderhill, Florida, 22 August, 2023: Sohail Khan bagged a hat-trick and picked four wickets of as many deliveries and then Jonathan Carter turned on the style with the bat for the New York Warriors, as they walked off with a comprehensive 6-wicket win against the Atlanta Riders, on Tuesday. Carter completed the chase with two sixes of the final two deliveries of the game. Sohail Khan was awarded the Player of the Match.

Asked to bat first, the Atlanta Riders’ openers Robin Uthappa and Lendl Simmons started off things in a steady manner. The duo took the Riders to the 50-run mark in the fifth over, having smashed 3 sixers and 4 boundaries between themselves in that time.

The openers, well set by now, were setting up the platform to tee off in the final few overs, even as the New York Warriors bowlers tried to dry up the runs. By the 7th over, the Riders were at 72/0 with Simmons doing the bulk of the scoring. Simmons was dismissed for 41 in the 8th over and the score reached 83/1 by the end of that over. Uthappa departed for 32 after that and Dwayne Smith was joined by Hamilton Masakadza, with the Zimbabwean becoming the next wicket to fall at the beginning of the final over.

Sohail Khan then dismissed Hammad Azam and Grant Elliot off consecutive deliveries, to complete a hat-trick. The Pakistani bowler knocked over Harmeet Singh after that, making it four in four, after which Smith and Nasir Hossain took the Riders over to 103/6 in their quota of 10 overs.

In response, the New York Warriors’ opener Kamran Akmal departed in the first over for 4, bringing Richard Levi and Tillakaratne Dilshan together. Levi was the next wicket to fall in the second over, off the bowling of Elias Sunny for 4.

That brought Dilshan and Jonathan Carter to the middle, and the Sri Lankan looked to attack, but was dismissed in the fifth over for 24 with the Warriors at 39/3. In walked the dangerous Shahid Afridi with 62 runs needed in the final five overs of the game. Afridi and Carter counter-attacked after that, before the Pakistan cricketer was packed off for 14. In the final two overs, the Warriors would need 30 runs to win and had 6 wickets in hand.

Carter and Misbah-ul-Haq brought it down to 22 off the final over. Carter smacked three sixes and Misbah hit one, as the Warriors romped over the line to a grand finish, winning six wickets.

Brief Scores

Atlanta Riders – 103/6 (Lendl Simmons – 41, Robin Uthappa – 32; Sohail Khan – 4/15, Umaid Asif – 1/20) lost by 6 wickets against New York Warriors – 109/4 (Jonathan Carter – 41*, Tillakaratne Dilshan – 24; Harmeet Singh – 2/8, Elias Sunny – 1/19)

US Master T10 : Morrisville Unity grab top position on table.

A ton of former Pakistani players and out of favor Pak players are playing in these leagues. I just checked the score card and even saw Umar Gul and Robin Uthappa playing too. They seem to have no standards.

It was an enjoyable tournament, but it was sometimes strange watching 40+ year old bowlers who have been retired for ages bowl to young thirty somethings who still have international experience, it became a run fest

Dallas Mustangs won 2023 Minor Cricket League

Under the lights at America’s premier cricket venue in Grand Prairie, TX, the Lone Star State’s own Dallas Mustangs claimed the 2023 Sunoco Minor League Cricket Championship. The Mustangs’ victory was anchored by a tremendous all-round performance from Nosthush Kenjige, whose 27 runs and three wickets won him Bru Player of the Final honors.

The hometown Mustangs won the toss and elected to bat, but quickly lost star batter Andries Gous in the second over. The Mustangs struggled to score early on, reduced to 46/5 by the end of the 10th over. However, a 56-run lower-order partnership between Ali Sheikh and Kenjige gave Dallas a fighting chance, with Sheikh scoring 36 from 25 balls.

Kenjige continued to anchor the inning and contributed 27 before being run out in the twentieth over. The Mustangs reached 121 runs, leaving the Cavaliers what seemed to be a highly attainable target to chase down. For New Jersey, three bowlers — Junaid Nadir Mahsood, Sunny Patel, and Adil Bhatti — each claimed two wickets, in an outstanding performance in the field by the Cavaliers.

New Jersey seemed intent on popping the champagne as soon as possible, coming out firing with 38 runs from the first five overs, led by 27 from Kennar Lewis. The champagne was soon put back on ice, though, as Dallas picked up wickets at a rapid rate while clamping down on the Cavaliers’ scoring, including a match-winning bowling performance from Kenjige who conceded only nine runs for his three wickets across four overs.

Ehsan Adil and Hammad Azam also claimed a pair of wickets each as Dallas ran through the New Jersey lineup, bowling out the Cavaliers for only 77 to win by 44 runs and lift the championship trophy under a moonlit Texan sky.

The Mustangs’ victory saw them win the MiLC title for the first time in the tournament’s third season, following victories by the Silicon Valley Strikers in 2021 and the Seattle Thunderbolts in 2022.

Sreesanth and Binny to play in 2nd edition of American Premier League amongst other International stars

Houston, 28th Nov: Former Indian cricketers S. Sreesanth and Stuart Binny are set to play in the 2nd edition of American Premier League (APL) that’s going to take place in Moosa Cricket Stadium in Houston, Texas from 19th-31st December, 2023. The league that was sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC), in May this year and the USA Cricket board, will have around 40 international cricketers across seven teams.

Fast bowler Sreesanth and all-rounder Binny will be part of the Premium Indians team.

The 40-year-old Sreesanth who announced his retirement from all forms of domestic cricket in India last year said, “I am honoured to be picked by the Premium Indians. I am still very new to franchisee cricket eco-system outside of India so really excited about it. It would be a great experience to play in front of the American crowd in a new territory for the first time.”

Binny who held the record of the best spell by an Indian bowler in an ODI for 9 years (6 wickets for 4 runs against Bangladesh in 2014) till it was recently broken by Mohammad Shami in the ICC World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, said, “Now that my record is broken, I am keen to make some new records on International soil and give my best to Premium Indians and American Premier League. A T20 tournament in the US sounds like fun and I am looking forward to play against some of the best talent from the world.”

Upon signing Sreesanth and Binny, Jay Mir, Founder and CEO of APL said, “It’s always a privilege to have Indian players playing in the league of your dreams, especially when you have players like S. Sreesanth and Stuart Binny. As the 2nd edition of APL is coming closer, we are on a pathway to bringing a cricketing revolution to the country and very excited to welcome some of the bigwigs of the world.”

The 2nd edition of American Premier League is all set to recreate the India-Pakistan rivalry at Moosa Cricket Stadium in Houston, Texas on 24th December 2023. The rivalry match between Premium Indians and Premium Paks will be named as “Super Match”.

The Premium Indians team will be represented by fast bowler S. Sreesanth and all-rounder Stuart Binny while Sohail Tanvir, Usman Qadir and Fawad Alam will play for Premium Paks.

A “Super Match” between Premium Indians and Premium Paks will be a delight for the fans’ not just in the USA but across the world as S. Sreesanth will look to relive the memory of 2007 ICC T20 World Cup final in South Africa when he took Sohail Tanvir’s wicket in the 17th over. “It still feels like yesterday when I was running into bowl against Pakistan in Jo-burg and took the winning catch. Playing against Pakistan and winning has been a real high for me. I am really looking forward to play the “Super Match” against Premium Paks and hopefully I will help Premium Indians come on top this time as well, said Sreesanth.

Tanvir, a left-hander from Pakistan who was the top-wicket taker in the first edition of the Indian Premier League said, “Playing against India is always special for me as I made my T20 as well as Test debut against them in 2007. You are overwhelmed with emotions and nervousness while playing against them and I am really excited that I’ve got another opportunity to represent Pakistan in a rivalry match.”

A total of seven teams will be participating in the 13 days long tournament that runs from 19th to 31stDecember. Teams that will compete for the coveted trophy are Premium Afghans, Premium Americans, Premium Aussies, Premium Canadians, Premium Indians, Premium Paks and Premium Windies. Each team will have a minimum of one and maximum of two national players to represent their country while every 15-member team squad will have 9 local (American) players mandatory as per the ICC guidelines. A maximum of 6 international players will be allowed in the playing XI.

Jay Mir, Founder and CEO of APL said, “The idea is to give fans a unique experience every time they tune into the APL and having a match between Premium Indians and Premium Paks is one of them. Having the stalwarts from both the countries will surely see a high-intensity cricketing action.”

A bunch of washed up players on a jolly USA trip.. there will be no takers for this. You already have the minor cricket league and not sure who's going to watch this which has over the hill retired international players who are not big stars

The American Premier League (APL) saw a massive controversy after the owner and umpires got involved in a feud over payment. According to reports, the umpires claim that they were not paid their due amount of 30 thousand Dollars. On the other hand, APL has claimed that the umpires demanded the amount from the owner despite getting a down payment and blackmailed to stop the semi-finals. The organiser added that cops were called on the spot and the umpires were "thrown out of the ground".

"The Umpires were paid a down payment and they held the semifinal hostage and blackmailed the owner in shelling out 30k or else no match. Danny Khan, Vijaya, Brian Owens were told that they cannot black mail and hold the semi hostage as an umpire but these greedy umpires didn't budge at which point they were asked to leave so the match goes on and they refused and held the match hostage at which point cops called," wrote APL through its X (formerly known as Twitter) account.

"And these greedy umpires were thrown out of the ground. An umpire should never hold a match hostage especially when they know it's the playoffs and blackmail the league owner into submission," it added.

Meanwhile, renowned journalist Peter Della Penna also shared the statement of the other party.

"I am Vijaya Prakash Mallela, one of the ICC Panel Umpire from the USA. It was a pleasure working with the teams for the last 10 days. Sorry, this has to end this way with umpires not getting paid about $30,000.00 balance, after paying our own expenses. Police were called on us when we demanded the payment towards our services and expenses. We had no choice, but leave. Good luck to all of you in your future endeavours," was written in the screenshot shared by Penna.

This is embarrassing.

Not a great advertisement for cricket in USA.

Some of cricket's biggest stars will return for the second edition of Major League Cricket as America's well-heeled T20 franchise league aims to build on a successful debut season.

The international player retention window recently concluded with the six franchises unveiling their star returnees for the second edition starting in July. The inaugural champion MI New York will have seven players starring, including captain Keiron Pollard and Nicholas Pooran - the hero in last season's final.

Australian emerging star Spencer Johnson, who has a million-dollar contract at the money-spinning Indian Premier League, will return for Los Angeles Knight Riders in a boost for a team that finished last season in last spot.

Texas Super Kings bring back captain Faf du Plessis, while Washington Freedom - who recently unveiled Australian legend Ricky Ponting as coach - and San Francisco Unicorns have also made key retentions with Akeal Hossain and Haris Rauf returning for their teams respectively.

Seattle Orcas, aiming to go one better after being runners up in 2023, have brought back South African stars Quinton De Kock and Heinrich Klassen.

Not only is it important for stars to return to MLC, a vindication on what it achieved in its first season, but also the retention means franchises can start building a brand around an identifiable core of players.

USA are 39/3 at the end of the powerplay chasing 169 in the 5th T20 international against Canada.

USA beat Canada in the 5th T20 international by 4 wickets. USA win the series 4-0

Cricket is becoming the next big market in America with the rise of league cricket and the immigration of the South Asian community.

Top-class players are joining MCL, which demonstrates how cricket is rapidly progressing in the USA.

Travis Head will join Steven Smith at the Washington Freedom for Major League Cricket in 2024. Head decided to continue after the T20 World Cup, taking a hiatus until September's white-ball tour of England. Currently representing Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League, he has scored 133 runs in four matches.

Only if we play on more grounds, the last MCL was just in my city, terrible weather honestly but I guess its like Desi baseball summers.

Former Australia international confirmed as new USA head coach

USA have confirmed the appointment of former Australia international Stuart Law as their new head coach.

While Law played more than 50 matches for Australia and was part of their squad that finished as runners up behind Sri Lanka at the 1996 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, the 55-year-old is perhaps more well known for the impressive coaching resume he has put together since retiring from the international game at the start of this century.

Law had roles as head coach of both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at the start of last decade and a stint with the West Indies in 2018, before more recent efforts with Afghanistan and the Bangladesh Under 19 team at this year's ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Now Law gets the big job with the USA and the experienced coach will take the reins of the side for next month's three-match T20I series at home against Bangladesh and when they co-host this year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup alongside the West Indies in June.

While Law acknowledges the difficult challenges that lie ahead, the Australian is excited about the prospects of watching his inexperienced side find their way in the international game.

“It is an exciting opportunity to join USA cricket at this time," Law said.

"USA is one of the strongest Associate nations in the sport, and I believe that we can mold a formidable squad going ahead.

"The first task will be to prepare the team for the series against Bangladesh and then set our sights on our home World Cup, which will be huge.”

Chairperson of USA Cricket Venu Pisike believes Law has the right credentials to lead the side with aplomb and expects the team to achieve plenty of success under the tutelage of the Australian.

“Stuart is one of the most accomplished coaches in the sport," Pisike said.

"He brings a lot of experience to USA Cricket with his varied assignments, particularly in developing international sides over the years. His appointment will only help the team grow to their full potential.

"We are excited to have Stuart on board just before the World Cup and look forward to lots of successes together. We wish him all the very best.”

USA are scheduled play Canada in the T20 World Cup opener in Texas on June 1, before further Group A clashes against Pakistan (June 6), India (June 12) and Ireland (June 14).

What does Steve Smith’s Stateside signing mean for cricket in the US – and Australia?

Steve Smith, one of this generation's finest batters, has conquered much of the cricketing world during his career, and he now has set his sights on a new frontier: the United States.

Yes, Smith has signed to play Twenty 20 (T20) cricket for the Washington Freedom, which happens to be coached by former Australian great Ricky Ponting.

Washington is one of six teams in Major League Cricket (MLC), which began in 2023. The Freedom finished third in the inaugural season, won by New York.

The 2024 season will begin in July before the US co-hosts the T20 World Cup with the West Indies.

A number of established cricket stars have already played in the US league, including Quinton de Kock of South Africa, Nicholas Pooran from the West Indies, Trent Boult from New Zealand and Australians Marcus Stoinis and Aaron Finch.

Looking ahead, T20 cricket has been included for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

So, why is cricket suddenly interested in the US – and does this interest go both ways?

Cricket in the US: what's the go?

Cricket is slowly becoming better known in the US.

Firstly, it is because of the rising South Asian population who mostly love their cricket.

It is a growing and affluent professional community – the South Asian diaspora is growing at a rapid rate across North America to the point that when you fly into most large US cities, you can spot cricket pitches.

Many South Asian immigrants to the US (and Canada) are engineers, doctors and entrepreneurs with good educations and professional jobs – Indian-Americans are the most affluent group in America by median income, while Sri Lankans and Pakistanis are two of the eight wealthiest segments.

In terms of education, 70% of Indian-Americans have at least a Bachelor’s degree, compared to the US average of 28%.

A lot of this affect is ploughed into supporting local cricket leagues in the US and watching the MLC.

In terms of participation, cricket is still very much a niche sport in the US, with about 200,000 registered players. However, this has grown from around 30,000 registered players in 2006, with emigration from South Asia driving the lion’s share of growth.

Consuming cricket anytime, anywhere

Secondly, live streaming has been taken off worldwide in recent years, allowing Indians in the US to watch India Premier League (IPL) games back home, and Indians in India to live stream MLC matches.

According to Chris Muldoon, chief strategy officer of Cricket NSW, there are more than 4 million subscribers to Willow TV’s cricket-only streaming service throughout North America.

This means it is easy for most cricket fans can consume what they want, when they want it.

The growth of cricket franchises

Thirdly, IPL franchises are launching clubs and leagues around the world – in South Africa, the UAE and the US – to grow the sport and to attract talent and revenue to their respective franchises.

There is a strong IPL presence across many of the domestic T20 competitions that have launched in recent years, including in MLS where four IPL franchises are involved with the foundation clubs in New York, Dallas, Los Angeles and Seattle.

This is a big shift in cricket governance, as it is not just the cricket boards of Australia, England & Wales and India calling the shots on schedules – it is now the IPL franchises too.

What does this mean for Australian cricket?

So, how does all of this affect elite cricket in Australia?

Australian cricketers have been competing in T20 competitions around the world for years now, with Cricket Australia occasionally having to step in to reduce the workloads of some of its best players.

Now the MLC will force governing bodies and players to react to another competition in a packed cricket calendar.

According to Muldoon, the opportunity in the US is too big to ignore. He says:

"The US is the world’s most sophisticated and competitive sports and media market and Major League Cricket presents the most exciting and challenging opportunity in world cricket."

"The proliferation of franchise T20 cricket around the globe, much of it driven by the commercial success of the IPL as well as changing preferences of consumers, is changing the way cricket is consumed. And it is bringing new revenue into the sport – which in turn is making it increasingly attractive to the world’s best players and coaches to be a part of these growing franchise leagues around the world on an almost full-time basis."

U.S. Set For Historic Cricket T20 World Cup Without Star Bowler

Cameron Gannon, an Australian cricketer who has represented the U.S. at the international level, found himself in an unusual position. For a player who had spent his 14-year career mostly in the fringes, the 6 foot 7 quick was fronting the cameras and surrounded by reporters after being a hero in Western Australia's Sheffield Shield triumph last month.

He was beaming, but also understandably it all felt a bit surreal, having produced a ferocious display of hostile pace bowling to tear into Tasmania and help deliver Australian powerhouse WA a third straight red-ball title.

The 35-year-old Gannon, who holds an American passport through his Sacramento-based mother, won't be part of U.S.' historic campaign at the upcoming T20 World Cup. Having played four T20Is for the U.S. in 2019, Gannon would surely be a lock for the squad having been the domestic player of the tournament in last year's debut season of Major League Cricket.

But Gannon is ineligible for selection having missed zonal trials in the U.S. due to his cricket commitments in Australia playing in one of the most respected competitions in the world.

"If that's the policy then that's the policy and there is nothing I can do about it. But it's disappointing," Gannon told me last month.

Fellow Australian cricketers Brody Couch and Cameron Stevenson also missed the cut for similar reasons and are set to be absent at the T20 World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the U.S. for the first time with some of the tournament's matches to be played in New York, Dallas and Lauderhill.

It is perhaps an unusual selection policy with U.S. under pressure to perform well in their first-ever cricket World Cup. But their hopes have been raised after a convincing 4-0 series victory over Canada - cricket's oldest rivalry - earlier in the month.

The U.S. unearthed a slew of debutants, including spinning allrounder Harmeet Singh Baddhan who was player of the series. The 31-year-old from Mumbai formerly represented India at the under-19 level and looms as an important player for U.S, who open the World Cup against Canada on June 1 in Dallas.

Even though the U.S. won't be at full-strength, due to their contentious selection policy, they do boast former New Zealand star allrounder Corey Anderson who is a pioneering figure for the development of cricket in the world's biggest sports market.

The U.S. will next month play Bangladesh in a three-match series that will effectively serve as their final preparation before stepping under the bright lights. The U.S. will be favored against Canada, but face tough tests against powerhouse India, former champions Pakistan and Ireland in the group stage of the World Cup which will also be played in the Caribbean.

Just days ago, former Australia cricketer Stuart Law was announced as head coach of the U.S. He doesn't have much time to mould the team, but does have a wealth of experience after previously being at the helm of Bangladesh and West Indies, and Sri Lanka and Afghanistan on an interim basis.

Law, however, won't be able to call upon the services of Gannon, who is in the form of his life.

USA Cricket avoided calls for suspension, but its funding is being 'controlled' by the sport's governing body, according to sources, amid ongoing turmoil ahead of co-hosting June's T20 World Cup.

At last month's International Cricket Council quarterly meetings, the continual saga engulfing American cricket was debated and an update of the T20 World Cup was provided, sources present told me.

Familiar warring has rocked USA Cricket with a spate of resignations while chief executive Dr. Noor Murad had his contract terminated last month. USA Cricket announced last week that it had started searching for Murad's replacement.

There were calls from several directors on the ICC board to suspend USA Cricket, with even one calling for an expulsion, according to sources.

But with a historic T20 World Cup on the horizon - with matches to be played in New York, Dallas and Lauderhill - USA Cricket has survived, but its funding is being controlled by the ICC, who make payments on its behalf (using USA's share of the ICC's money).

ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 – 100 Days To Go Media Event

It is a return to a chaotic American cricket scene after former governing body USA Cricket Association was expelled in 2017 capping a turbulent period marked by three suspensions.

The newly formed USA Cricket had started promisingly under the high-profile leadership of Paraag Marathe, the long-time San Francisco 49ers senior administrator, and former ICC chief operating officer Iain Higgins. But both departed in contentious circumstances in recent years and upheavel has ensued ever since.

It comes at a pivotal juncture ahead of the U.S. co-hosting cricket's biggest event of the year. But USA Cricket has had limited role in the organization and promotion of the T20 World Cup. That is almost unprecedented for a host nation, but seen as necessary given the circumstances.

T20 Incorporated, the entity established in the U.S. to deliver the event, is believed to have kept USA Cricket in the loop over matters regarding the event. T20 Inc. have been under pressure with a modular cricket stadium in New York still amid construction ahead of the World Cup starting on June 1.

The 34,000-seat Nassau County Stadium in Eisenhower Park, 30 miles east of Manhattan, is expected to cost $30 million, according to sources.

USA's Major League Cricket acquires List A status from ICC

The United States Major League Cricket became the second Associate Franchise Tournament after the United Arab Emirate's International League T20 to acquire List A status from the International Cricket Council .

With this new status, the MLC will be acknowledged as a legitimate T20 league, and tournament playing records will now be used to calculate official format statistics.

The tournament director, Justin Geale expressed his feelings following the decision.

"We are really excited for the news, as it's a recognition of the standard and high quality of players taking part in the tournament. By awarding MLC List A status for the upcoming season, it helps to acknowledge the strength and growing stature of the tournament and ultimately will help to enhance the credibility of the sport in the USA on a global scale," Geale told ESPNcricinfo.

The director further stated that he is thankful to the ICC for taking out time, and look at the cricket in the USA.

"The most important part for me, though, is it ensures the performances of some of the world's best players alongside their peers are adequately reflected in their career statistics. Really thankful to the ICC for taking the time to look at it as cricket in the USA doesn't always fit into a template. We are an Associate nation and proud of that, one with a unique opportunity in front of us. It's our hope that on the back of the upcoming World Cup and a successful season, we can continue to build a platform for the sport to grow and ultimately succeed in the USA," Geale added.

Coming MLC season 2, reigning champions MI New York, led by West Indies T20 superstar Kieron Pollard against the runners-up of 2023, Seattle Orcas, captained by South African all-rounder Wayne Parnell clash in the opening game on July 5.

The second season of the tournament is a significant milestone in the history of T20 cricket in the United States. Building on the momentum of its inaugural 2023 season, MLC has extended the tournament due to demand with an extra six league matches. The four-game playoff series, to be hosted in Grand Prairie, Texas, is set to captivate cricket fans across the globe.

The Texas Super Kings, spearheaded by classy South African Faf du Plessis, will take on West Indian off-spinner Sunil Narine's LA Knight Riders at the purpose-built Grand Prairie Stadium in Grand Prairie, Texas on June 5 as well, as per an MLC press release.

The opening weekend also features the Australian-stacked Washington Freedom featuring Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Travis Head, and coach Ricky Ponting, facing MI New York on Saturday, . The San Francisco Unicorns, bolstered by hard-hitting opening New Zealand batter Finn Allen, will host the LA Knight Riders on July 7, Sunday, at Grand Prairie Stadium, Texas.

Cricket in the USA is the topic of the town nowadays, thanks to the ICC T20 World Cup. Here's a brief history of cricket in the USA

Civil war, a president and Frankenstein's monster - a history of cricket in USA

The men's T20 World Cup is being hosted by the USA and West Indies, and kicks off on Sunday morning (01:30 BST). Here, BBC Sport looks back at the storied history of cricket in the USA.

It’s the question that has derailed many a pub quiz team over the years: which two nations contested the first international cricket match?

If you’ve ever fallen foul of it, you will probably remember it is not England and Australia, the countries that played the first Test matches, including the foundational encounter in 1882 at The Oval.

That game, won by Australia, led to the now famous ‘obituary’ for English cricket published in the Sporting Times, and the birth of the Ashes.

By then, a civil war had swept away the roots of the game in the place that had actually staged the first international: the United States of America.

It was there, on 24 September 1844 in New York, at a site that is now slap in the middle of Manhattan near the junction of First Avenue and East 31st Street, that the USA met Canada for what many regard as the first international encounter in any sport, pre-dating the America’s Cup yachting by almost seven years.

The contest was scheduled for two days, although rain meant that it ran into three.

Five thousand people attended the St George’s Club for the first day’s play, and over the course of the match, an estimated $100,000 (approximately $4.2m in today's money) was gambled on the outcome.

The Canadians, somewhat exhausted and bedraggled by a journey that had brought them up the St Lawrence River and across Lake Ontario by boat before catching trains to New York, batted first and made 82 against an US attack that consisted solely of two men born in Yorkshire: Sam Wright and Harry Groom.

Canada’s star was David Winckworth, who made 12 with the bat before sending down a few round-arm thunderbolts of his own, taking four wickets as the Americans were dismissed for 64.

Winckworth again top-scored with 14 as Canada stacked up another 63, setting the USA 82 to win.

The run chase began well, opening pair James Turner and John Syme making 25 without loss before the first international batting collapse took hold - George Sharpe carving through the next six wickets for just 11 runs, the Americans not helped by the mysterious absence of their number three, George Wheatcroft.

He appeared at the ground 20 minutes after the final wicket had fallen and began a heated row with the Canadians over whether the game should restart so that he could bat. Canada stood firm: they had won by 23 runs.

The fixture began a turbulent period of to-and-fro between the sides.

They met again home and away the following year, Canada winning both, before the USA took victory at a game in Harlem in 1846 amid such bad feeling that the fixture was not contested for another seven years.

Perhaps some of that was down to David Winckworth who, having starred for Canada in the first three matches, moved to Detroit and turned out for the USA in the 1846 game.

These matches and the men that played in them, now misty with time, suggest a kind of sliding doors moment, a chance for the sport of cricket to lay its roots down in the USA just as modernity was taking hold.

Brought over by the British, the game is mentioned in the diaries of the politician and planter William Bird III in 1704.

A version known as ‘wicket’ was widespread enough to count George Washington as a participant in at least one game according to the journal of a Valley Forge soldier called George Ewing.

It wrestled with baseball for popularity to the point that Professor Tim Lockley, a social historian of the American south at Warwick University, told the Guardian newspaper: “Cricket was by far the biggest sport in this period. Then the Civil War started in 1861, just when it was reaching its peak of popularity. The sport became a victim of that war”.

The sliding doors closed on cricket, at least as a mainstream sport.

After the Union victory in 1865, a handful of upmarket sporting clubs around New York and Philadelphia clung onto the game for a while.

Collegiate cricket flourished in the way that it did in England’s public schools.

The Philadelphian Club toured England in 1897 and played MCC, Oxford and Cambridge Universities and most of the county sides, their mighty all-rounder Bart King causing a stir as he destroyed a full-strength Sussex almost single-handed.

The team returned twice more, in 1903, when King inspired wins over Lancashire and Surrey, and 1908, when he topped the national bowling averages.

Once international cricket began to coalesce around the Imperial Cricket Conference, formed in 1909 by England, Australia and South Africa, America was sidelined.

The geography of cricket became the geography of empire: the Indian sub-continent, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies and South Africa all shared that dubious colonial root. In turn, their admissions to international cricket and subsequent first victories over the ‘mother country’ of England came freighted with meaning.

It was these diasporas that would offer a foothold to the game in America.

Dwight Eisenhower attended a game in Karachi. Donald Trump tried – and failed – to pronounce the names of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli during a visit to India.

Los Angeles was home to two clubs that gained a degree of fame: the Hollywood Cricket Club, which featured Boris Karloff - the man who portrayed Frankenstein's monster on the big screen - among its players, and the Compton Cricket Club, which used cricket to combat gang violence.

Perhaps the most significant contribution came online, from Simon King at the University of Minnesota, who, in 1993, began a proto-website that he named Cricinfo, ostensibly to test the possibilities of a new medium called the World Wide Web.

Cricket-obsessed students and researchers around the world began to contribute, and the site, now ESPNCricinfo, grew into one of the first and deepest online resources for any sport.

Professional T20 cricket, a brainwave of the England and Wales Cricket Board's that began in 2003, is the accelerated format that 21st Century culture both demanded and embraces.

The Indian Premier League, the form’s ultimate iteration, is packed with globetrotting players and sprinkled with Bollywood stardust. Each of its 74 games are worth £10.5m, a figure that puts it behind only the NFL and the Premier League in per-match value.

It is this combination of format and profitability that America may find impossible to ignore.

Cricket has sought its tipping point since the USA’s admission as an associate member of the ICC in 1965, but its history has been one of mismanagement and maladministration. In the local vernacular, it has all been a bit small time.

Cricket and football, each with giant footprints in other parts of the globe, have found America hard to penetrate.

The US is large enough and populous enough to sustain an internalised culture, at least in terms of its most beloved sports of basketball, baseball and gridiron.

They prosper in America in a way that they do not elsewhere in the world. Cricket (and football) requires the USA to accept that it cannot dominate or win everything – at least for now – and that is a hard sell to the uncommitted.

2023 saw the most concerted effort so far to relaunch with the establishing of Major League Cricket, a franchise tournament on the IPL model that is building stadiums in six cities including Los Angeles, New York and Washington.

It has powerful investors with Indian-American roots, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Adobe executive Shantanu Narayan.

The first season attracted white-ball names as big as England’s 50-over World Cup winner Jason Roy, West Indies big hitters Sunil Narine and Andre Russell and new Aussie sensation Jake Fraser-McGurk, alongside established IPL stars Nicholas Pooran, Glenn Maxwell, Trent Boult and Kagiso Rabada.

MLC will begin its second season just four days after the men’s T20 World Cup final.

That World Cup will see the United States and Canada compete with the big boys, and, in an echo of the sport’s origin story, they will contest the tournament’s opening fixture, at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on 1 June.

Florida and New York will join Texas in hosting matches for the five sides competing in Group A, including the biggest game of them all, India against Pakistan in New York on 9 June.

That encounter will hold the attention of the world and will be played in a temporary stadium that seats 34,000 – more than can attend any English Test match venue apart from Old Trafford.

Those kind of numbers continue to tantalise everyone that sees the sport having a real and profitable future across the Atlantic. In the end, like cricket itself, it’s a numbers game and America has always been keen on very big numbers.

Major League Cricket’s expansion plan poses a threat to English competitions

Major League Cricket has announced ambitious new expansion plans for the sport in the US. In a move that will have significant implications for the landscape of the professional sport in England, MLC, which began with a 19-game season, has confirmed it will expand to 34 games by 2025.

The US league now has six franchises but plans to launch two more in the near future, and two more soon after that. The announcement comes just after MLC has been fully legitimised by the news that its matches have been awarded List A status by the International Cricket Council.

“It was always intended to be a 10‑team league,” the MLC chief executive, Vijay Srinivasan, told the Guardian. “Studies show that we are a big enough country, with a big enough demographic to support 10 teams, so that’s our plan. We had 19 games in our first season, will have 25 in our second. I think we want to get to 34 next year, and just gradually keep expanding.”

The second season, which starts at the end of the men’s T20 World Cup, runs for 23 days and overlaps with the Hundred. The US tournament next year will be significantly longer and start earlier. Srinivasan said MLC is keen to play in June.

“Ultimately for us our ideal calendar is to start much earlier, in the late spring or early summer,” Srinivasan said. The tournament was pushed back this year because of the T20 World Cup, which is using the MLC’s stadium in Grand Prairie, Texas. “With the Indian Premier League ending in late May, I think our sweet spot would be to start in early June, which is when we have the school holidays in the US, and go into July. That’s how we would like to establish our window.”

That would clash with the T20 Blast season but leave the Hundred to run from late July through August.

English cricket has already had to adapt to sharing its summer with a competing league. Last year Jason Roy gave up his England contract so he could take a job with LA Knight Riders, while Surrey’s Sunil Narine skipped the county side’s appearance on Blast finals day because he was also playing for LA. Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, said at the time it was “disappointing and frustrating” to “lose a player of Narine’s quality at late notice”. Narine’s decision was a sobering reminder of the status of English domestic cricket.

MLC’s expansion plans will also increase pressure on the English game to decide whether or not to bring private investment into the Hundred. The England and Wales Cricket Board, the 18 counties and Marylebone Cricket Club agreed that it was the “direction of travel” for the game on 10 May, but there is frustration about slow progress. MLC boasts a formidable array of investors, including four IPL sides – Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals – as well as significant business figures such as Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella.

“All of these people who came on board with us when we started five years ago have been immensely successful in other walks of life,” Srinivasan said. “You know they understand that this is not one of those things where you can just turn a switch. The expectation was never that this would be an overnight transition. They’ve been immensely patient and they’ve backed us all the way through.”

MLC has already established a series of academies and a minor league system to develop local players. It is now working on developing more List A venues. “We’re not here to play a league and go away every year,” Srinivasan said.

“We feel like it is our role is to build the infrastructure for cricket in the US. MLC is the means to an end, if you will. I think 10 years from now, I think you’ll see a very different landscape for cricket in the US. We’ll have a very robust set of venues around the country, we’ll have a home-and-away sort of format for MLC, and we’ll have a much larger pool of players as a result in the system. Hopefully that means we will also have a very strong sort of USA team. Those are all our ambitions.”

Team USA cricket team making Americans take notice even in defeat

There are two moments on Wednesday afternoon when it appears that maybe, possibly, there is sort of a chance that the United States can beat India in cricket and pull off one of the greatest upsets in the sport’s history.

The first is early in India’s turn at bat. Virat Kohli, India’s version of Mickey Mantle and the most famous athlete you’ve never heard of, hits first and on just the second delivery, he astonishingly bats out. Saurabh Netravalker, the U.S. bowler, goes nuts. His teammates mob him like they just won the whole T20 Cricket World Cup, even though this is the group stage. It’s called a golden duck, because Kohli has accounted for zero runs — sort of like a golden sombrero in baseball. Then a few minutes later, the U.S. dismisses India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, after he scores just three runs.

India is batting second and needs to score just 111 runs to win. For context, a few days ago when India beat Pakistan here on Long Island, they scored 119 runs — the lowest total anyone has ever successfully defended in the T20 World Cup. So realistically, the U.S. lost this game before India came up to bat. But, hey, anything is possible.

This U.S. team, which nobody knew existed until it pulled off a shock win over Pakistan, is eminently likable because it is eminently American. Netravalker, for example, was born in Mumbai, moved to the U.S. in 2015 and now works for Oracle in San Francisco while playing for the national team on the side. Other players hail from Toronto, Karachi, Cape Town, Lahore, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Guyana, Christchurch and Trinidad.

The crowd, which is almost entirely in India gear, starts chanting “U-S-A” after Sharma gets out, appreciating the fight the Americans are putting up and knowing that, for many of them — who are first- or second-generation immigrants — there is no real losing today. Unlike Sunday, when the tension in the air for India versus Pakistan was split only by guttural screams and cheers for much of the game, they’re relaxed.

Around the 11th over (a set of six balls, of which there are 20 for each team in a game), comes the second time that things are looking up for the U.S. They’ve held mighty India, the world’s best team, to just 53 runs, which isn’t an especially great pace. The win probability I’m following on my phone has been hovering between 7 percent and 10 percent for the United States since I pulled it up, but that number feels wrong. India isn’t that far off the pace — they should be fine — but they do need more than they’re getting. I was here a few days ago and watched India successfully defend the sort of numbers they’re trying to overcome now. This at least looks possible … right?

India wins by seven wickets with 10 balls left to go by a final score of 111/3-110/8 — a score that appears much closer than it was, since they batted second and the game ended as soon as they reached the target.

Around their 15th over, they find some of the rhythm they’d been lacking and take advantage of a couple unforced errors from the U.S., which drops a pop-up and allows five penalty runs for time-wasting. Suryakumar Yadav, the batter who would have been out on the pop-up, ends up scoring 50 runs, nearly 20 more than any other player in the game. Suddenly, India needs just 22 runs from 22 balls.

“Easy,” someone sitting near me says, and on cue, India hits a six, which is like a home run. Then a four, the cricket equivalent of a ground-rule double. Then a two. This is over.

The U.S., in all likelihood, will still make it out of the group stage on account of having beaten Pakistan, but will need to beat Ireland on Friday in Florida to do it. That would put them into the Super 8 round — the quarterfinal — which, it feels worth noting, is as far as the U.S. Men’s National Team has gotten in the soccer World Cup since 1930.

Of course, that would not change the place of cricket in America the way we talk about a run at the men’s World Cup potentially doing for soccer every four years. The better parallel would be to the 1930 World Cup, when the U.S. got to the semifinal and it confirmed for most people that the sport existed.

Even so, and even with the loss on Wednesday, this is a team to be proud of.

MI New York And Los Angeles Knight Riders Make Draft Picks For Major League Cricket 2024

USA's vice-captain Aaron Jones, Sunny Patel and Chaitanya Bishnoi are set to feature in the upcoming second Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024, which begins on July 5. Following the mammoth interest in the T20 World Cup and America's success, three MLC teams—Los Angeles Knight Riders, MI New York, and Seattle Orcas had a roster place available, providing the opportunity for undrafted domestic players to secure a place on a team roster in the upcoming tournament. The draft order was randomly determined on June 18, and teams were given 48 hours to strategize and finalize any internal discussions before the supplementary draft occurred.

LA Knight Riders – Chaitanya Bishnoi

A top-order batsman and spin bowler, the 29-year-old played for the Chennai Super Kings championship side in 2018 before moving to the United States to pursue his cricket in early 2023. He was a part of the San Francisco Unicorns squad in the 2023 inaugural season of Major League Cricket, featuring in all five matches for the Bay Area side. He was also a key member of the Dallas Xforia Giants during the 2023 edition of Minor League Cricket.

Seattle Orcas – Aaron Jones

Jones returns to a familiar dressing room, having played for the Orcas in last year's inaugural Major League Cricket season. The top-order batsman has been a cornerstone of Team USA's success during the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Jones has made headlines throughout Team USA's historic World Cup campaign and was part of the USA's momentous defeat over Pakistan in Texas. Orcas fans will be hoping for similar performances throughout MLC.

MI New York – Sunny Patel

A right-handed middle order batsman and leg spin bowler, Sunny Patel left his mark on the 2023 Minor League Cricket season. His contributions with both bat and ball played a crucial role in the New Jersey Somerset Cavaliers advancing to the Championship match, where they lost to the Dallas Mustangs. Patel also provides some variety to the domestic player brigade of MI New York, being the only domestic leg-spinner on their roster heading into the 2024 season,

MLC tournament director Justin Geale said, "Major League Cricket plays a critical role in developing domestic players and providing a pathway to play cricket at the highest level amongst some of the best players in the world.

“We are thrilled to welcome Chaitanya, Aaron, and Sunny to the 2024 MLC season, adding three more talented domestic players to our league.”

The second season of MLC commences July 5, with reigning champions MI New York taking on Seattle Orcas at Morrisville, NC, followed by Texas Super Kings vs LA Knight Riders at Grand Prairie Stadium, TX.

We had a fairly active debate on the forum on Aamer Sohail's ill-timed statement after our victory against England.
While most of were bashing him, only some of us understood the underlying point Sohail was trying to make or allegedly trying to make. I know some of you guys have already dismissed it as a conspiracy theory and it might well be a conspiracy theory but once again I read something on cricinfo and wanted to point this out to all PPers.

There is this visible prioritization from ICC evident from such news pieces, and actions of the various committees. They want to globalize the game but they don't take any steps to promote it or encourage it. They reduce the number of teams in the World Cup, they refuse to force the issue of giving young cricket nations more games against top teams, they have done nothing to help Zimbabwe and Kenya and yet you see them focus so much on trying to establish cricket in countries who have a strong "anti-cricketing" history. USA is probably at the top of that ladder.

The sports market in the US is completely saturated with strong focus on football, basketball and baseball and then ice hockey, select areas and even soccer took years to get to where it is now and yet it is not st the same level as other international power houses.

The only hope for cricket here is expats from cricket playing countries such as myself and I have played against some of the top players representing USA and I have witnessed first hand the following cricket has in the country.

It is ridiculous to even suggest USA will get to a level close to even Afghanistan within the next 15-20 years unless some extra ordinary talented players from other nations emigrate here and join the national team. Even if that happens, it doesn't mean cricket has a solid structure or foundation where they can consistently churn out quality cricketers regularly.

My point is: ICC is looking at this as a purely business perspective, USA is a long term investment. Even if they focus on developing the expat game, there is money there.

While they are busy focusing on this, it is appalling that some nations with cricket rich histories and traditions are currently struggling. Pakistan, West Indies, zimbabwe, Kenya all have their own challenges which ICC shows long title to no interest in helping resolve.

There has been no international tours of Pakistan for almost ten years now. Pakistan is a massive contributor to the sport not only in its history but also its development and shaping the way it is at the moment. It is, in my opinion, a huge injustice that the cricketing world is trying to ignore the biggest elephant in the room and concentrating all its energies on revenue. I would suggest that you keep a close eye on this and you will see an unusual keen interest from ICC in USA cricket. It is confounding to those who know the reality of cricket here. Why is the governing sports body so adamant?

Making profits is not a bad thing but at what cost?
Cricket reached to wrong audience :-(

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the USA has seen incredible fan engagement across the event and unprecedented interest in cricket in the USA from sports fans

Fans in the USA turned out in extraordinary numbers for the first round of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA. In the USA alone, 190,000 fans attended matches that have captivated the country and set the stage for cricket’s continued growth in North America.

Grand Prairie in Texas, saw enthusiastic support with an attendance of over 22,000 across the four matches, highlighted by a huge turn out from Nepal fans and not forgetting US fans who witnessed the historic upset of Pakistan by the USA.

Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, the largest venue in the World Cup, lived-up to its billing by hosting the largest crowd in USA history for international cricket when India played Pakistan (34,028), and closed its run with a true celebration of cricket between India and USA (31,722). In total almost 165,000 people attended World Cup games in New York.

The U.S. leg of the event concluded in Broward County, Florida where Pakistan played Ireland in front of over 4,000 enthusiastic fans, many of whom had endured several days of unprecedented rainfall, and the resulting three washouts.

Tens of thousands more fans attended fan parks at Cedar Creek in Nassau County, Citi Field and the World Trade Center in NYC, Epic Central in Grand Prairie and Fisher Pavilion in Seattle, while unofficial watch parties were seen around the country.

Fans across the USA are also engaging digitally with the World Cup with fantastic numbers recorded across the ICC’s platforms. There have already been 2.7 million USA-based users recorded visiting the ICC website and App, which is up 370% from the number recorded for the entire ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, of those viewers 52% are new fans coming to the ICC platforms.

The time spent on the ICC website and App has doubled for those recorded in 2022 and 71% of the users are coming from organic search showcasing the increased interest in the sport.

In addition, the ICC Mascots Blaze and Tonk have been joined in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 fan zones on Roblox over 10 million times by young fans in the USA. The fan zones are a fun place to introduce new fans to cricket through interactive cricket themed games, immersive stadium experiences and much more.

ICC Head of Events, Chris Tetley said: “We are absolutely delighted with how the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has gone in the USA and the unprecedented level of interest in cricket in the country. To see 190,000 people in stadiums across the USA enjoying the experience is fantastic and the traffic on the ICC website and app has shown the increased appetite for the sport as a result of the World Cup.

“The extraordinary levels of media coverage in the USA was also great to see from Good Morning America to the front page of the New York Times, the event was covered by all mainstream media in the USA which bodes well for our long term strategy in the USA.

“With the USA being a priority area of the global growth strategy, we couldn’t be happier with how the World Cup has been received on our first step into the biggest sports market in the world and we will look to build on this over the next four years towards the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028 and beyond.”

USA Cricket Set To Be Put ‘On Notice’, While Spotlight Shines On T20 World Cup Finances

USA Cricket is set to be put 'on notice' amid ongoing turmoil, a sanction that would move the governing body closer to a suspension of its membership.

The International Cricket Council has deemed USA Cricket non-compliant of its Associate Membership criteria. The issue will be part of discussions during the ICC's Annual General Meeting starting on July 19 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

As I reported in April, USA Cricket avoided calls for suspension during an ICC board meeting in March, but were required to "remedy all areas of non-compliance" by the AGM. Its funding has been 'controlled' by the ICC.

According to an ICC document, sent to administrators ahead of the AGM, USA Cricket has yet to complete "governance reform processes recommended by the USA Olympic and Paralympic Committee".

"The USOPC has written to the USAC expressing serious concerns about the ongoing governance of USAC," the document said. "Whilst this does not put USAC in breach of ICC Membership Criteria, it reflects broader concerns regarding USAC’s governance."

"USOPC have stated if USAC do not achieve (National Governing Body) NGB certification, they will be required to commence a process to recognise an alternate NGB for cricket."

USA Cricket is also deemed to "not have a fit-for purpose administrative structure".

Familiar warring has rocked USA Cricket with a spate of resignations highlighted by chief executive Dr. Noor Murad having his contract terminated in March just a few months into the role. A recruitment process to find his replacement is still ongoing.

"Currently, replacement staff are temporary and part-time contractors," the ICC document said.

USA Cricket announced last week that directors Kuljit Singh Nijjar and Arjun Gona had been temporarily suspended after being alleged of breaching its member conduct policy.

“We are committed to the highest integrity and ethical conduct on behalf of our member organizations and partners, which is essential to grow the game of cricket in the United States," USA Cricket chair Venu Pisike said.

If USA Cricket is put 'on notice' at the AGM and remains non-compliant after one year, it could then face suspension and ultimately expulsion as a member. Being 'on notice' is described as something like a "rap on the knuckles", but the financial pinch is felt when members are suspended and their funding halted.

It is familiar ground for a chaotic American cricket scene after former governing body USA Cricket Association was expelled in 2017 capping a turbulent period marked by three suspensions.

USA Cricket avoided being put 'on notice' at last year's AGM.

"USA Cricket has been treated with kid gloves," an ICC board director told me. "There is no USA Cricket, quite frankly."

Cricket Chile is also at risk of being placed 'on notice' due to its non-compliance with Associate membership criteria.

It comes in the aftermath of a momentous T20 World Cup, with matches played in New York, Dallas and Lauderhill.

But the spotlight is shining on the U.S. leg of the tournament - both on-and-off the field, particularly around the modular stadium in Long Island. The ground was built in just a few months and - as I reported in April - was pegged at $30 million.

But the drop-in pitch and slow outfield made scoring particularly difficult, while some teams have reportedly complained about logistical issues such as their hotels being far away from the ground in Eisenhower Park, 30 miles east of Manhattan.

An audit is set to be conducted on the U.S. leg, particularly focusing on New York, to determine whether there was a cost blowout.

"Need to see how much was spent on New York and whether it was worth it considering the ground was torn down straight after (the U.S. leg had finished)," an ICC board director told me.

"There will be discussion on the financial and strategic point of views of American cricket considering the U.S. is a target market for the ICC."

With USA Cricket mired in its internal woes, T20 Incorporated was the entity established in the U.S. to deliver the T20 World Cup. Its handling of the event is expected to come under scrutiny at the board meeting.

Is Houston Poised to Lead the Cricket Revolution in the US?

Houston has quickly become a hotspot for cricket in the United States, boasting two premier venues: The Prairie View Cricket Complex and Moosa Stadium. These facilities have turned the city into a sanctuary for cricket enthusiasts, providing year-round opportunities for play and practice. Venu Pisike, the Chairman of USA Cricket Board, highlights that nearly half of the nation’s cricket tournaments take place in Houston. As Harmeet Singh, a U.S. national team player, asserts, "I firmly believe this is the most crucial location for cricket’s success in the U.S.—and it is indeed flourishing."

Despite being a major hub, Houston was conspicuously absent from hosting any matches during the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Prairie View was used as a training ground for the national team, but neither it nor Moosa Stadium was featured in the competition's schedule. This raises questions about Houston's role in the future of elite U.S. cricket, especially considering the city's significant contribution to the sport's growth.

Both Moosa Stadium and Prairie View Cricket Complex have played vital roles on the national stage. Together, they have hosted the last 14 U.S. men’s national team fixtures, excluding World Cup games. Moosa Stadium, the first privately funded cricket stadium in the nation, was established by Sahki Muhammad in Pearland over a decade ago. "A decade ago, many told me that cricket would struggle to find a place in this country," Muhammad recalls. "Yet, we held onto that belief."

Prairie View Cricket Complex, established six years ago, stands as the largest cricket facility in the U.S. with its six ovals. It has hosted significant tournaments, including the Senior Men’s T20 National Championship and the Under 19 Women’s National Championship. Pisike emphasizes, “Prairie View definitely ranks among the best cricket complexes in the nation today.”

While Houston's facilities are exceptional, they have not yet secured a Major League Cricket (MLC) team. Currently, all MLC matches are held at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas and Church Street Park in North Carolina. However, MLC CEO Vijay Srinivasan reveals that Houston is being considered for a future expansion team. "Both Dallas and Houston have their cricket audiences, each likely substantial enough to sustain an MLC team," says Srinivasan.

Moosa Stadium recently hosted 12 ODI matches as part of the 2019-2023 ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, making it one of only two U.S. grounds accredited for One Day International matches. Prairie View hosted pre-World Cup series against Canada and Bangladesh, demonstrating its capability to support international events.

Looking ahead, both venues aim to attract more international matches with proposed facility upgrades. Mangash Chaudhari, co-owner of Prairie View, plans improvements including permanent restrooms and a dedicated player pavilion. Pisike remains optimistic, stating, “Securing these amenities would make it much easier to attract international cricket back to Houston.”

As Houston continues to cement its status as a premier destination for cricket, the city holds significant potential for hosting future international events, especially with cricket's anticipated inclusion in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Pisike believes Houston stands poised to become the epicenter of American cricket, a sentiment echoed by local cricket enthusiasts who eagerly await the return of national teams to their beloved city.

Misbah, Shoaib Hafeez and 13 other signed US Masters T10 Season 2

Lauderhill,

The much-awaited second season of the US Masters T10 is coming up soon. But before that, the franchises have had their say and picked their squads, with the eventual goal of first winning the trophy, and also entertaining the crowds in North America.

Like the inaugural edition, the season promises plenty of riveting contests and of course, the big hits as cricket's fastest and most entertaining format takes centre stage. The likes of Dwayne Bravo, Suresh Raina, Shoaib Malik, Mishab-ul-Haq, James Neesham, Angelo Perera, and Aaron Finch, among others will battle it out for the top prize. With 60 spots up for grabs in the tournament, more than 500 cricketers registered for the Player Draft for Season 2 of the US Masters T10.

The California Bolts select Hussain Talat. The Detroit Falcons signed Abdur Razzak and Imran Khan.

The New York Warriors select Misbah-ul-Haq as Icon and also singed Kamran Akmal, Sohail Khan, Umaid Asif, Mohammad Hafeez, Sohail Tanvir, Hassan Khan.

The Atlanta Riders announced chose Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Irfan and Hammad Azam.

The Morrisville Unity camp signed Rumman Raees, Anwar Ali and Mukhtar Ahmed

Nawab Shaji Ul Mulk, T Ten Global Sports Founder and Chairman, said, “Cricket in US has been growing rapidly, and we want to be a part of this special journey. The ICC T20 World Cup this year made a significant impact in the region, and we want to build on that momentum and carry it forward. With Season 2 of the US Masters, we aim to provide fans with more memorable contests and help accelerate the growth of cricket in a non-traditional market like USA.”

Master T10. Another league. Hard to keep track of all these random leagues.

But, these leagues are probably good for USA as it gives cricket more exposure in the country.

"Sachin Tendulkar Greatest, His Arrival Gives Credibility To National Cricket League": Wasim Akram

The National Cricket League's Sixty Strikers has hit the United States of America market, with fans going ga-ga seeing some of the finest stars the game has produced in action. Former India batter Suresh Raina has already shown his magic on the pitch, while other international stars are also showing their blitzkrieg in the T10 format. On the sidelines of a match in the Sixty Strikers league, Pakistan's pace great Wasim Akram revealed how organiser Arun Agarwal floated the league's idea to him during the T20 World Cup 2024 (organised in the USA and West Indies). Though Akram was first skeptical due to the paucity of time to organise the league, he is now quite impressed with the way the organisers have managed to pull off a tournament of such an extent.

"This is amazing. When Arun Agarwal met me during the T20 World Cup, he asked me to join this tournament. When he told me this, I was not sure that such a league could be organized in such a short time but I would like to say that he has organized the league very well," Akram said.

He further said: "Players are being given all kinds of facilities and the most important thing is that cricket is being played in the right style and cricketers are showing amazing game. This is giving another chance to the fans to see their favourite players playing again. I would like to congratulate everyone on this".

Even during the T20 World Cup 2024, drop-in pitches were used. The same concept has been implemented in the Sixty Strikers tournament by NCL. Wasim is hopeful to see the wicket holding up the same way it has the first few days.

"I would like to congratulate the organizers for starting the league with such players who have fans all over the world. I hope that the drop-in pitch remains like this here for the next 10 days."

Cricket in the USA has hit new highs after the T20 World Cup 2024. The craze for the game can be seen even in league cricket matches.

"After the World Cup, there has definitely been an interest in cricket here. Cricket has got a boost. Earlier people here wanted to know about cricket. But now the World Cup has been held here, due to which people have come to know about it, what this game is. Cricket has got a new identity in America due to the World Cup. Cricket is getting popularity in Texas, Dallas in America. Now this league is also being played here, due to which cricket will get more popularity in America," Akram said.

With the great Sachin Tendulkar also joining the league, Akram is confident that its popularity will soar further.

"There will be a lot of benefits from Tendulkar joining the league. Sachin has been the greatest player in world cricket. His joining this league will give recognition to such a tournament. Sachin's arrival will give credibility to this league. I am friends with Sachin, I am also very excited to meet him. We have had a lot of competition on the field which the fans have liked a lot. "
