WINDIES SQUAD FOR T20I SERIES IN PAKISTAN

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed the 13-member WINDIES squad for the imminent Tour of Pakistan which features three Twenty20 Internationals on April 1, 2 and 3 in Karachi.

SQUAD

Jason Mohammed (Captain)

Samuel Badree

Rayad Emrit

Andre Fletcher

Andre McCarthy

Keemo Paul

Veerasammy Permaul

Rovman Powell

Denesh Ramdin

Marlon Samuels

Odean Smith

Chadwick Walton

Kesrick Williams

Team Management Unit

Stuart Law (Head Coach)

Alfonso Thomas (Assistant Coach)

Ryan Maron (Assistant Coach)

Vernon “Khevyn” Williams (Physiotherapist)

Dexter Augustus (Video Data Analyst)

CWI Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams, and President and Chief Executive Officer of West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), Wavell Hinds, will accompany the squad on the trip.

Commenting on the Tour, CWI Chief Executive Officer, Jonny Grave, said: “Following the successful hosting of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Final in Karachi on the weekend, our squad are now en route to Pakistan for our three-match T20I series.

“This Tour is a further major step for our friends at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to bring their cricket back home, and we are pleased that our players and support staff have recognised this and supported this venture.”

Grave added: “Independent security advisors, Eastern Star International (ESI) have confirmed to both CWI and WIPA that they are satisfied that the risk is manageable and can be mitigated to an acceptable level.

“We have made it very clear to the players and support staff that had personal reservations about this Tour that we fully understand and accept their position.”

Commenting on the selection of the squad, Chairman of the CWI Selection Panel, Courtney Browne, said a few of the players identified for selection, including regular T20I captain Carlos Brathwaite, had opted out of this Tour, due to security concerns, but feels their replacements have a great opportunity to push their claims for future selection.

“We had a few players that opted not to tour Pakistan, due to their or their families’ security concerns and CWI have fully accepted their position,” said Browne.

“This series, therefore, provides opportunities for new players to state their claim for a regular place in the team, plus gain vital experience in different conditions. We expect the series to be highly competitive.”

On the choice of Jason Mohammed as captain, Browne said: “Jason is our One-day International vice-captain, and he has been asked to step up and lead the team with the unavailability of Carlos. He has lots of captaincy experience at first-class level.”

There are four uncapped T20I players in the squad – two of whom have been picked for the first time in a senior international squad, plus two with previous international experience in other formats.

Batsman Andre McCarthy and Jamaica Scorpions teammate, fast bowler Odean Smith, a member of the 2016 WINDIES Under-19 ICC Youth World Cup-winning squad, are in a senior WINDIES squad for the first time.

Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul has played Tests and One-day Internationals, and Guyana Jaguars teammate, all-rounder Keemo Paul, another member of the 2016 WINDIES Under-19 ICC Youth World Cup-winning squad, is selected after his very promising ODI debut performances during the ICC World Cup Qualifier 2018 in Zimbabwe.

“Smith and McCarthy are currently in our WINDIES ‘A’ programme and we believe this experience will be of benefit to them,” said Browne.

“Smith has good pace and has shown good potential as a fast bowler. McCarthy is a talented batsman who has made progress in white-ball cricket.”

Browne added: “Paul has really grasped his opportunity following a strong showing in the Super50, the WINDIES ‘A’ series victories against England Lions and he has grabbed his opportunity at international level. His performances during the ICC World Cup Qualifiers were both exciting and composed and he gets a chance to build on these with his selection for Pakistan.

“Permaul has already had a few opportunities at international level, so he is no stranger to international cricket. He has never played IT20s however, and this will be a welcome opportunity for him to show another dimension to his game.”

On the recall of Ramdin to the squad, Browne said: “Denesh brings a lot of experience and an opportunity to restart his international career. While he will be the primary wicketkeeper in the squad, we also have available Chadwick Walton and Andre Fletcher as back up.”

Not confirmed but this might be the possible 13, its a pretty good squad tbh considering we all know mercenaries are not part of WI team now a days

1 Samuel Badree
2 Rayad Emrit
3 Andre Fletcher
4 Andre McCarthy
5 Jason Mohammed (Captain)
6 Keemo Paul
7 Veera Samy Permaul
8 Rovman Powell
9 Denesh Ramdin
10 Marlon Samuels
11 Odean Smith
12 Chadwick Walton
13 Keswick Williams

^If the above squad is confirmed, that is a pretty decent squad. I thought Chris Gayle would come out, but I guess he's of to the IPL.

Well it will be a good experience for some inexperienced players playing in a packed out Karachi stadium. If this goes well, WI players in the future will be more willing to tour.

What a squad. Maybe we should give that kid spinning maestro and the 6 year old future Wasim Akram a spot in the side too. Just to even things up a bit.

we are running out of alphabets.. is this C squad or D squad? if WC qualification squad was B/C squad, this should be D/E squad..

Keemo Paul performed well during the recent series against England Lions who were whitewashed by West Indies A. Haven't heard of Odean Smith.

Not a full strength squad though so Pakistan ought to be winning this series.

We should’ve selected a squad that matches their calibre. This will be a thrashing 3-0

Good squad - the bigger purpose is different, but for a short term, gain isn't bad either.

ICC ranking system doesn't differentiate between Andre Russell & Andre Fletcher - a 3-0 should take PAK to 130+ points, highest of the 3 formats (IND is at 122 at ODI & 121 at Test), and a good buffer of 4/5 points from AUS.

Hope PAK bats first in all 3 games :(

Looks really weak. Think only Samuels and Badree are any good/good enough to get into their first team. The rest either no experience, or just not very good.

I guess it's good a WI squad willing to tour Pakistan and am happy about that.

Ouch that is one weak squad, but I guess if players won't go to Pakistan even if they are getting big money, then there's not a lot the PCB can do.

Squad really isn't as bad as some people are making it out to be. Its not perfect but we are not in a perfect situation right now, are we?

Instead of complaining about everything and expecting perfection from the start, we should be patient and hopefully things will slowly get back to normal.

I don’t get how players could be pulling out for security reasons now... what else can PCB do.

In the last 18 months we’ve had like 8 T20 matches safely held in Pakistan. Why are there still concerns?

Anything less than a 3-0 win would be a disappointment. None of their star players like Russell, Pollard and etc are playing.

IIRC those guys haven't played for WI for years anyways , so wouldn't weaken their team too much. The only regulars they are missing are Lewis, Holder and Braithwaite.

IMO a few players also pulled out because apparently IPL starts in a few days. So the timing really wasn't the best for this series.

With all respect to PCB CWI and Pakistani fans, this kind of squad touring Pakistan will not convince teams to tour Pakistan. This looks more like CWI want that T20series in US so whosoever was willing to tour they made a team out of it. This will not bring the credibility PCB want.

Pollard, Bravo, Narine all prioritised PSL over WI in world cup qualification.. Sammy and Russell are out of favour as well.. only Gayle, Holder and Braithwaite are missing from the list so on reality 10 players would have been part of regular squad anyways.

Well have a look on the bright side, this is a great platform for the newcomers to get a slight sip of international cricket as bad as the squad may be.

So should they not even try and just cancel the series? Pakistan leg of PSL has been a success with some big names present. So, I don't think "credibility" is a concern.

CWI has been in a disarray lately and quite possibly could be another reason but then again, I've seen your posts before so not surprised.

I think this is the same Odean that clocked 150 kph in the CPL.

It's a T20 game and most of these WI players have CPL experience. I think the boundaries will be 55m for security reasons and a flat track. Will be a good series.

PCB should have made sure that they get a credible squad from the CWI. In their haste to arrange the series they may be doing more damage.

My posts are what i feel.

not sure about "big" names present, but given the overt presence of security forces to make the match/es happen, a lot of players are bound to be "concerned"... give it a few more months or a year and hope for the lack of anymore untoward events and then there is a chance of "big" names actually touring pakistan....till then keep the faith in your board, they seem to have been doing an admirable job given the circumstances.

Difficult situation for PCB as they cannot force ANY player to step foot in Pakistan and no player could have been held to ransom to play in this series.

Plenty of WI players play in PSL. Should have made a squad out of that. This just defeats the purpose of PCB. So much effort, security, money being spent and the end result may not be what PCB is looking for. May be even a Best PSL 11 vs PSL Champions series would be better. This just wont convince anyone.

Half of those players are TTF's and the rest are nobodies.

What a horrible squad. Where are the big names?

Karachi is uncharted territory in international cricket right now so getting WI to come over with moderately decent squad is a big win compared to what we had to go through to get Zimbabwe to break the ice in Lahore.

Its the process and exposure which is the end goal here so we on the right track. After this series PCB should be able to secure Lahore and Karachi for a full ODI and T20 tour with a major team i.e South Africa.

South Africa? Here you cant get a decent WI side to tour and you want the saffers?

This is why i said that this defeats the purpose. The WI contingent in PSL was better than this squad.

Why not? To convince tours in the future you need to conduct series successfully from a security POV. The quality of players matters less in that regard.

Half their team was in the World XI squad. We don't know why some of their better players are not in the squad. Sammy would be willing to tour, why is he not in the squad? Their internal politics are an issue to consider as well in why the squad is depleted.

Lets get this series over with so we can claim international cricket is back here.

I should also mention (because I can't edit my previous post) that the same was said after the PSL 2017 final. That the Quetta squad was depleted, it would make no difference. But it was because of that game that World XI toured, and because of that Sri Lanka toured, and because of that we had more games held in Pakistan this year. You fail to see the big picture if you just restrict yourselves to the quality of the players.

Well said.

Anyway this squad isn’t too bad.Only players I hadn’t heard of were Andre McCarthy and Odean Smith

The WI contingent in PSL was better than the team that played in WC Qualifiers recently. Aagay?

Correct.

I feel like some posters here haven't realised that no amount of police officers and security cordons can protect the Windies batsmen from the Rahat :rahat

Much like Superman derives his super powers from the solar energy of our galaxy's yellow sun, the Rahat will become more powerful than we can possibly imagine the closer he gets to the bun kebabs and nihari on Tariq Road. :rahat1

We shouldn't blame any foreign player for being so scared of him that they avoid a tour of Pakistan.

Do other teams / players look at past touring squads when choosing to tour Pakistan?

Highly doubt it.

The only perception that matters is that WI (A Full Member of the ICC) is touring Pakistan.

You all forgot about Zimbabwe's visit to Pakistan in 2017?

This squad is rubbish but I will gladly take it - just to get to watch Pakistan play at home :)

Only Lewis, brathwaite and gayle are missing from the XI who played T20s in NZ tour, dunno why it's called b,c d squad etc.

Since this is the WI Z team, can you please list all the players who are WI regulars in T20Is but aren't in this squad?

Narine, Gayle, Russell, Brathwaite (Remember the name), Simmons, Holder. That's 6 who part of the WI best T20 team. I didn't include Bravo and Sammy because i think they were dropped. Most or all of them are part of IPL and hence aren't part of the team.

WICB has restrictions on ODI teams. PLayers have to play domestic ODIs to be part of the ODI squads. However, there are no restrictions for T20s. The Best team is unavailable due to IPL.

This was the playing 11 against 3rd NZ T20, I am not sure how it was a better squad. Almost same players are coming give or take 2,3.

Wrong information. Russel was banned for two years so havent played for WI since than, while Narine, Simmons werent part of the T20 squad and Holder also didnt play in T20s against NZ.

With a WI C may be D team touring will you convince teams to tour? Main players are not touring and thats why squad is made up of anyone who is willing to go.

Here is the WI squad. 5 players missing from the squad that was already weakened by withdrawl of big names.

Jerome Taylor Shai Hope and another spinner.

Thats half the squad missing.

Jerome Taylor, Shai Hope and that other spinner. Are these guys that big players that would have won WI a T20 match or pull the crowd in. All these players played in T20s in WI and in UAE and they still lost 6 out of 7 matches. Most of the people dont even know these guys. Only Chris Gayle' name would have been a big one.

I guess only Lewis and Brathwate are forced changes other than that none of the players did anything significant in the last T20 series they played so Nurse, Hope etc might have been dropped anyways.
