BJP Leader Arrested, Illegal Properties Razed For Allegedly Abusing Madhya Pradesh Judge On Road

The legal fraternity responded with unity. The District Bar Association met on the court premises and announced that no lawyer would represent the accused

Bhopal:
A dramatic showdown between the judiciary and a ruling party functionary erupted in Dewas, after BJP leader Pankaj Gharu was arrested for allegedly misbehaving with a judge triggering not just a criminal case, but a swift demolition drive by the district administration.

The controversy began when district and additional sessions judge Prasanna Singh Bahrawat filed a first information report (FIR), accusing Gharu and his associates of obstructing and abusing him at a public place. According to the complaint, the incident took place on Tuesday morning when the judge was on his way to the court.

Bahrawat said a Scorpio SUV belonging to the accused was parked in the middle of the road, blocking traffic. When he requested them to move the vehicle, the accused allegedly shouted at him, prevented him from opening his car door, and obstructed him from taking a photograph of the illegally parked vehicle. A video of the heated confrontation has since surfaced, intensifying public outrage.

Within 24 hours, the situation escalated. On Wednesday, BJP Scheduled Castes Morcha state executive member Pankaj Gharu was arrested. Later that night, Bhim Gharu, described by police sources as a habitual offender and reportedly close to a BJP MLA, was also taken into custody. A third accused is on the run.

Station in-charge Amit Solanki confirmed that a case has been registered and investigation is on. "One accused has been arrested. Search operations for the remaining accused are continuing," he said.

But the action did not stop at arrests. In a swift administrative crackdown, the district team demolished illegal constructions linked to Pankaj Gharu, including a poultry farm allegedly built on government land along Maxi Bypass and encroachments near his house.

Tehsildar Sapna Sharma said multiple notices had previously been issued, but the encroachments were never removed. "The structures were illegal and built on government land. Due process was followed," she said.

The legal fraternity responded with unity. The District Bar Association met on the court premises and announced that no lawyer would represent the accused. Bar Association President Ashok Verma confirmed that a formal resolution had been passed and circulated among members, objecting even to the bail applications filed on behalf of the accused.

Scenes inside the court turned tense as members of the bar gathered in protest, calling the alleged misconduct an attack on judicial dignity. The accused were produced before the court amid heavy security from the police station.

Andhra Techie, Wife Killed In US Crash Days After Trip To India

Krishna Kishore (45), a software engineer, and his wife Asha (40), natives of Andhra Pradesh's Palakollu, lost their lives on the spot when their vehicle met with an accident in Washington.

A pall of gloom has descended over the town of Palakollu in Andhra Pradesh following the death of a Telugu couple in a horrific road accident in the United States, just 10 days after they returned from a trip home.

Krishna Kishore (45), a software engineer, and his wife Asha (40), both natives of Palakollu, lost their lives on the spot when their vehicle met with an accident in Washington.

The couple was travelling with their two children at the time of the crash. While the parents died on the spot, their son and daughter sustained serious injuries. Emergency responders shifted the children to a nearby hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.

The tragedy is particularly heart-wrenching as the family had just returned to the US after a visit to their hometown.

Just ten days ago, Krishna Kishore and his family were in Andhra Pradesh's Palakollu to spend time with relatives.

On their return journey to the US, the family had a layover in Dubai, where they celebrated the New Year together.

Friends and family members in Palakollu are in a state of shock, struggling to process that the family they bid farewell to so recently has met with such a devastating fate.

Efforts are reportedly underway by the Telugu community in Washington and the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) to assist the surviving children and coordinate with the family for the repatriation of the remains.

"They were so happy during their visit just a few days ago. To hear this news now is beyond devastating," a close family friend in Palakollu said.

The condition of the two children remains a primary concern for the extended family in India as they await further medical updates from the US authorities.

Rs 61 Lakh Cash, 2.5 kg Gold Found In Raids On Retired Andhra Engineer

Cash, gold, silver, house plots, flats, and bank lockers were identified during the searches.

In a major anti-corruption operation, the Andhra Pradesh Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has uncovered assets worth more than Rs 30 crore allegedly amassed by retired Panchayat Raj Superintending Engineer Kallepalli Srinivasa Rao.

Cash, gold, silver, house plots, flats, and bank lockers were identified during the searches.

Rao, who joined the Panchayat Raj department in 1990, retired on December 31, 2025, as Superintending Engineer in Visakhapatnam. Acting on credible information that he had accumulated wealth far beyond his known income, the ACB launched multi-location raids across Visakhapatnam, Saluru and Hyderabad.

During the synchronised searches at his residence and properties linked to his family and associates, officials seized a large quantity of valuables and property documents. Items recovered include:

  • Rs 61.87 lakh in cash

Karnataka Woman Fakes Kidnapping, Injuries. She Wanted To Study In A City

Police examined CCTV footage from the surrounding areas but did not find any corroborative evidence.

Belthangady:
A case that began with a complaint of a kidnapping attempt turned around after the Karnataka police found the story to be fabricated and alleged injuries fake. On Monday, in Belthangady, near Mangalore, a minor college student approached the police, alleging she was stopped while travelling to her college on a scooter.

The girl claimed that masked men in a car attempted to kidnap her and assaulted her with a knife before fleeing the scene.

Based on her complaint, police registered a case and shifted her to the Belthangady Government Hospital for treatment.

As the incident triggered public alarm, local MLA Harish Poonja and senior police officers visited the hospital, enquired about her health, and gathered details regarding the incident.

The student had initially told police that the car's number plate was covered with cloth, three masked men were involved, and that her bag was taken away by the kidnappers.

Based on this information, police examined CCTV footage from the surrounding areas but did not find any corroborative evidence.

When investigators sought further clarification regarding the vehicle, its colour, and the exact location of the incident, the student reportedly became inconsistent in her responses, raising suspicion.

During detailed questioning, the student eventually admitted that no kidnapping attempt had taken place. She disclosed that she wanted to discontinue studies at a rural college and instead seek admission in a college in Mangaluru city. To support this plan, she admitted to self-inflicting injuries and staging the kidnapping narrative.

"When we did the medical examination the injuries were noticed to be superficial, the doctor's assessment was that it could be self inflicted. During confrontation and cross questioning, the girl confessed that she lied because she didn't want to do to the college in Belthangady and instead wanted to go to a college in Mangaluru," said Dr Arun K, Superintendent of Police Dakshina Kannada.

An eyewitness also claimed three men ran away after seeing him and he dropped the girl home. But when police questioned him, he claimed the girl narrated story and he just repeated it, the police said.

Police also found that the student had burnt her books near her residence and falsely claimed that they were taken away by the alleged kidnappers to strengthen her story.

Based on medical evidence, inconsistencies in her statement, and her eventual confession, police closed the kidnapping angle of the case.

"We have counselled the girl and are questioning others to ascertain if there is more to the story," Arun K added.

Mehul Choksi's Son 'Actively' Involved In Money Laundering: Probe Agency ED

Rohan Choksi's name, however, had neither appeared in any First Information Report (FIR) nor has he been made an accused in any money laundering case registered by the CBI or the ED.

New Delhi:
Nearly eight years after the investigation against fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi began in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has, for the first time, formally claimed that his son Rohan Choksi was also actively involved in the money laundering. The ED made this assertion before the Appellate Tribunal in Delhi.

Rohan Choksi's name, however, had neither appeared in any First Information Report (FIR) nor has he been made an accused in any Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) case registered by the CBI or the ED.

In its written submissions before the tribunal, the probe agency stated that Mehul Choksi was a director in several companies that existed only on paper. According to the agency, these shell companies were created to show fictitious transactions and to route proceeds of crime, without any actual purchase or sale of goods.

The agency further told the tribunal that Rohan Choksi holds a 99.99 per cent shareholding in another company, Luster Industries Private Limited, in which Mehul Choksi is a director. The investigation revealed that this company was used to divert funds abroad.

According to the ED, the probe also found that an amount of USD 127,500 (around Rs 81.6 lakh) was transferred from Asian Diamond and Jewellery FZE to Singapore-based Merlin Luxury Group Private Limited. The ED claims that Asian Diamond and Jewellery FZE directly transferred the proceeds of crime to this company.

The agency informed the tribunal that the Singapore-based Merlin Luxury Group was also under the control of Mehul Choksi and was being operated through Luster Industries Private Limited. Therefore, the agency argued that since Rohan Choksi holds a 99.99 per cent stake in the company, he cannot escape the attachment of assets.

It contended that all facts and evidence on record clearly indicate that Rohan Choksi was actively involved in the offence of money laundering along with his father. On this basis, the agency justified the attachment of assets linked to Rohan Choksi.

The ED's latest claim has once again raised questions about whether the agency is now preparing to expand the scope of the investigation to other family members.

Mehul Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are the prime accused in the scam, being probed by both the CBI and the ED. They are accused of siphoning off over Rs 13,000 crore from the Punjab National Bank (PNB) using Letters of Undertaking and Foreign Letters of Credit by bribing officials at the bank's Brady House branch in Mumbai.

Choksi fled India in January 2018, days before the Rs 13,000 crore fraud in the PNB was detected.

He is now facing extradition proceedings in Belgium, while Nirav Modi is lodged in a London jail.

In these cases, thieves stole jewellery and cash valued at roughly Rs 24.66 lakh, including over 1,084 grams of gold, more than 6,300 grams of silver and Rs 40,500 in cash.

During his arrest, the police recovered about 699 grams of gold ornaments and 3.8 kg of silver ornaments, the luxury BMW vehicle purchased with stolen money, an unnumbered scooter and burglary tools.

All recovered property was estimated to be worth over Rs 15.63 lakh.

According to Visakhapattanam Commissioner of Police Shanka Brata Bagchi, Sunny had a history of theft from his teens. At age 15, he was caught breaking into houses in the PM Palem area and was sent to a juvenile home. After his release, he continued committing burglaries in and around Kakinada, Sarapavaram, Ramachandrapuram, Indrapalem and Rajahmundry, and served 14 months in Rajahmundry Central Jail. Police records suggest he was involved in more than 60 burglary cases across the state.

Investigators say Sunny used masks, caps, gloves and tools like hammers, screwdrivers and drilling machines to break into homes. The police have booked him in all related cases and are preparing charges for prosecution as the probe continues.

Bhupesh Baghel's Son Got Rs 250 Crore In Liquor Scam: Chargesheet

Money was "illegally" collected from "every" bottle of liquor sold in Chhattisgarh (between 2019 and 2022), said the anti-money laundering agency.

Raipur:
Chaitanya, son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, received Rs 200 crore to Rs 250 crore as his share from an alleged liquor scam in the state, the Anti-Corruption Bureau/Economic Offence Wing (ACB/EOW) has claimed in its chargesheet.

The state police's ACB/EOW, in its seventh supplementary chargesheet in the multi-crore liquor scam filed before a special court here on Monday, claimed Chaitanya Baghel played a key role in establishing, coordinating, and protecting an extortion racket (syndicate) within the excise department (during the previous Congress government, which was in office from 2018-23).

The voluminous document, running into around 3,800 pages, has named Chaitnaya Baghel as an accused in the alleged scam pegged at more than Rs 3,000 crore, an ACB/EOW statement said.

With this, a total of eight chargesheets have been filed in the case so far.

The latest chargesheet details the current status of the investigation against the arrested accused, along with digital evidence reports about all those in custody. The document also outlines the progress of the ongoing probe against the accused persons.

The statement quoting the chargesheet said Chaitanya Baghel acted as coordinator among officials such as Anil Tuteja, Soumya Chaurasia, Arunpati Tripathi, and Niranjan Das, who worked in line with the syndicate's interests at the administrative level and as ground-level operatives of the network, such as Anwar Dhebar, Arvind Singh, and Vikas Agarwal (all co-accused), and issued instructions to them.

Chaitanya Baghel worked through his trusted associates to transfer and manage proceeds of the scam collected by businessman Anwar Dhebar's team, moving the funds to higher levels, it claimed.

He allegedly received his share of the proceeds through various firms belonging to liquor businessman Trilok Singh Dhillon, transferring it through banking channels to his family firms and using it in real estate projects.

Furthermore, he was also found to have received and invested large sums of money generated out of the scam through banking channels via his family members, friends, and associates, the chargesheet claimed.

The probe agency said, "Evidence indicates that Chaitanya, along with managing the proceeds of the crime at a higher level, received around Rs 200 crore-Rs 250 crore as his share." The investigation has also revealed that high-level protection, policy/administrative intervention, and influence provided to the syndicate by Chaitanya Baghel enabled this crime to be perpetrated for a long period, it claimed.

"The ongoing investigation suggests the amount involved in the liquor scam is estimated to be approximately Rs 3,074 crore. However, further investigation suggests the total amount of the proceeds of crime generated out of the alleged scam could exceed Rs 3,500 crore," it added.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is probing the money laundering angle in the alleged scam, arrested Chaitanya Baghel on July 18 following a search at his house, which he shares with his father, a Congress politician, in Bhilai town of Durg district.

As per the ED's prosecution complaint (chargesheet) filed earlier, Chaitanya Baghel "handled" more than Rs 1,000 crore worth of "proceeds of crime" generated from a liquor "scam" in the state.

The central agency has stated that the alleged scam resulted in a "massive loss" to the state exchequer and filled the pockets of beneficiaries of a liquor syndicate.

The scam was orchestrated between 2019 and 2022 when then-CM Bhupesh Baghel headed the Congress government in Chhattisgarh.

Money was "illegally" collected from "every" bottle of liquor sold in Chhattisgarh (between 2019 and 2022), said the anti-money laundering agency.

Chaitanya Baghel was arrested by the ACB/EOW in September while he was in jail under judicial custody.

The ED in January arrested former excise minister and Congress leader Kawasi Lakhma, businessman Anwar Dhebar (brother of Congress leader and former Raipur Mayor Aijaz Dhebar), former IAS officer Anil Tuteja, Indian Telecom Service (ITS) officer Arunpati Tripathi and a few others as part of their probe in the case.

The EOW/ACB registered an FIR on January 17, 2024, in the alleged scam, naming 70 individuals and companies, including Lakhma and former chief secretary Vivek Dhand.

After his son was arrested, former CM Baghel claimed that the action was taken because the Congress, during its rule, tried to stop the cutting of forests and mining activities in the state.

The Congress leader also alleged that the probe agencies were being misused to target Opposition leaders.

After Wife's Miscarriage, Man Beheads Neighbours To 'Please Angry Deity

'Days before the attack, Singh had built a mud platform outside his house and told neighbours he would be performing a special puja.

Bhopal:
A 21-year-old man allegedly beheaded two of his neighbours with a sharp weapon during a religious ritual in Madhya Pradesh's Singrauli district early Thursday morning. Two others who tried to intervene were also brutally attacked and remain in critical condition.

The incident took place between 4 am and 5 am in Atarwa village. According to the police, the accused, Chhatrapati Singh, had invited his neighbours, Phool Kumari Singh (50) and Kemla Singh (65), to his home for a puja. However, shortly after they arrived, Singh allegedly attacked them in his courtyard.

Two other villagers, Sumitra Singh and Rambhajan Singh, rushed to the house after hearing screams but were also attacked. Both are currently being treated at a local hospital.

Initial investigations suggest the killings may be linked to 'black magic'. Police found that the accused's wife had recently suffered a miscarriage, leading Singh to believe that a deity was "angry" and required a ritual sacrifice to be appeased.

Days before the attack, Singh had built a mud platform outside his house and told neighbours he would be performing a special puja on Thursday morning. Investigators recovered ritual materials, including a coconut, from the crime scene.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer Gayatri Tiwari said that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

"Witchcraft and superstition are suspected in this case. Our forensic (FSL) team is on-site examining the evidence. A coconut and other puja materials were recovered," Tiwari said. "The accused and the victims belong to the same community and are believed to be distant relatives."

Chhatrapati Singh is currently in police custody. Investigators are trying to determine if the attack was premeditated or if the accused was suffering from a delusional episode fueled by his beliefs.

Ambala: Terror plot foiled, 5 kilos of explosives seized from car at railway station

Ambala:About five kilos of RDX, enough to trigger a massive explosion, two timers and five detonators were found in a car parked outside the Ambala Cantonment railway station on Wednesday night, after a tip-off about a possible terrorist attack.

Intelligence sources said the RDX was not yet in IED (Improvised Explosive Detonator) form; it was not connected to any detonator or timer and so the blue Indica Car seemed to have been a carriage vehicle bound for a terror attack somewhere else. That, investigating agencies believe, could well have been near-by Delhi, especially with Diwali round the corner.

When asked if the intended target of the terror plot could have been Delhi, Haryana's Director
General of Police, Ranjiv Dalal, who along with senior officials of Haryana Police rushed to the spot, said, "Senior officers from various investigating and security agencies are here. We are probing every angle".

Sources said the Delhi Police Special cell got a tip-off and they alerted the Haryana Police. A National Security Guard (NSG) team, including a bomb disposal squad, was also rushed to the spot.

The car and the RDX is being brought to Delhi in a truck. The investigating agencies are trying to trace the owner of the car, which has a Haryana registration number which the police suspect could be fake. The car too could be stolen, they say. A sweet box with a Jammu address was also found inside the car.

Security has been stepped up and the Ambala railway station has been cordoned off. All roads in the area have been closed temporarily.

Special teams of the Delhi and Haryana police and the NSG are handling investigations.

333 CCTVs, Sensors: How Delhi Civic Body Keeps Watch On 17 Public Services

Officials say the system has significantly improved response time, accountability and data-driven decision-making in the NDMC region.

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has strengthened real-time governance and civic monitoring through its Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), set up in 2020 under the Smart City project at a cost of Rs 65 crore. The high-tech facility currently keeps watch over nearly 17 essential public services, ranging from sanitation and traffic flow to environmental conditions.

A network of 333 CCTV cameras installed across NDMC areas has been integrated with the ICCC. 183 CCTV will be overseen by the Delhi police enabling officials to maintain surveillance, respond quickly to incidents and ensure smoother functioning of municipal operations. The centre also assists in coordination with law-enforcement agencies, with personnel from the Delhi Police deployed at the facility.

One of the major focus areas is vehicle management. Through GPS and RFID-based systems, authorities can track daily distances travelled, monitor routes and receive alerts if vehicles deviate from approved paths or cross NDMC boundaries. Live tracking is available for pressure jetting machines, mechanical road sweepers, anti-smog guns, water tankers and garbage trucks.

In the solid waste management segment, the ICCC supervises clearance status of over-ground bins, while underground bins are fitted with mechanisms to monitor fill levels and trigger alerts for timely lifting. Radio Frequency Identification technology has been deployed to streamline operations involving different categories of waste vehicles, including those handling municipal and construction debris.

The command centre is also equipped with smart environmental sensors that measure pollution and weather indicators in line with CPCB norms. Parameters tracked include temperature, humidity, AQI, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, PM10 and PM2.5. Automatic alerts are generated if readings breach permissible limits, and long-term trends are analysed for policy response.

Apart from sanitation and environment, the ICCC keeps an eye on traffic movement, water-logging points and other vulnerable locations, linking field teams with a dedicated control room hotline to ensure faster intervention.

Officials say the system has significantly improved response time, accountability and data-driven decision-making in the NDMC region.

Mehul Choksi Faces UK Court Heat, Told To Deposit Rs 8 Crore In Ongoing Kidnapping Case

The UK High Court has ordered fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi to deposit more than 677,000 pounds as security for costs in his lawsuit alleging he was kidnapped from Antigua in 2021.

Fugitive Indian businessman Mehul Choksi has faced a setback in the UK after the High Court ordered him to deposit 677,000 pounds (around Rs 8 crore) as security for costs in a civil lawsuit linked to his kidnapping claims.

The order was passed on Friday by the High Court of Justice, King's Bench Division, in a case filed by Choksi against the Government of India and five individuals. Choksi has alleged that he was abducted from Antigua and Barbuda in 2021 and forcibly taken to Dominica as part of a conspiracy.

According to WIC News, the ruling followed applications by the defendants Gurmit Singh, Gurjit Bhandal, Leslie Farrow-Guy, and Gurdip Bath who sought an order requiring Mehul Choksi to provide security for costs. Such orders are intended to protect defendants from the risk of being unable to recover legal expenses if they succeed in the case and the claimant fails to pay.

In its ruling, the court said it could not find a strong likelihood of Choksi succeeding in his claims. The judge observed that the case did not meet the threshold of having a high probability of success.

The court order stated: "Taking all the circumstances into account, in my judgment it would be just to make an order for security for costs. This is not one of those rare cases where it can be seen that there is a high probability of success, either on the preliminary issues or at trial."

It further said: "Given that there is a dispute of fact as to whether the defendants were involved in kidnapping and assaulting Choksi, I cannot proceed on the basis that they were."

The court added that there was "a real risk that an order for costs against Choksi would not be capable of enforcement", but said it was "not satisfied that the claim would be stifled" by requiring the security deposit.

Choksi filed the lawsuit in May 2024 against the Indian government and Gurdip Bath, Barbara Jarabik, Gurmit Singh, Gurjit Singh Bhandal and Leslie Farrow-Guy, all UK residents. He has claimed damages for alleged physical and psychological injuries. The Indian government has consistently denied the allegations.

Video, Naked Body, Missing Boyfriend: MBA Student's Murder Shocks Indore

The 24-year-old's body was so decomposed that the father could only identify her by her socks.

Indore:
The naked, decomposed body of a 24-year-old MBA student was found in her classmate's rented house in Madhya Pradesh's Indore on Friday with rope marks around her neck, indicating that she had been strangled.

Around the time of the murder, a video of a sexual act was posted from the student's phone to the college WhatsApp group in which her face could be seen, but the face of the other person was covered using emojis. Officials suspect the other person in the video is the classmate in whose house the body was found, who was also her boyfriend.

On Tuesday, the woman, a first-year MBA student at an institute on Sanwer Road, went with her father to get her birth certificate corrected. That evening, she told her family she was going to attend a birthday party with a classmate, Piyush Dhanotia, and would return by 11 pm. She never came back.

That same night, the objectionable video was posted to the college WhatsApp group.

The college management removed the video and contacted her father the next day, on Wednesday. They informed him about the video as well as the fact that his daughter's and Dhanotia's phones were switched off.

The family then went to several police stations, and a missing person's complaint was finally registered at Pandharinath late on Wednesday night. The family alleged that despite their repeated pleas, there was little urgency in tracing her. A policeman, they said, visited Dhanotia's house in Uncle Gali in the Dwarikapuri area, but only locked it from the outside and left, saying the landlord would be informed if anyone arrived.

'Identified By Her Socks'

On Friday, several residents of Uncle Gali complained about a foul smell emanating from Dhanotia's house. Police went there, broke open the door and found the 24-year-old's naked body lying inside. The body had decomposed to such an extent that the father said he could identify his daughter only by her socks.

Rope marks were found around the neck, indicating she was strangled, and an initial medical examination estimated the time of death at around three days ago, which aligns with the day she went missing.

Officials said Dhanotia is the prime suspect in the murder and has been missing since Tuesday. Dhanotia is originally from Mandsaur, where his father runs a grocery store, and had moved to Indore to pursue his MBA.

The victim's father alleged that his daughter was mentally tortured, blackmailed, and ultimately murdered by Dhanotia. He said the boyfriend had used his daughter's phone to upload objectionable videos and circulate them among her contacts, and she had shared certain concerns with her younger sister before her death.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Krishna Lalchandani confirmed that a missing person's complaint was registered on Wednesday. "Prima facie, it appears she was strangled with a rope. Further details and the motive will become clear after the post-mortem report," he said.

Karnataka Woman, Lover Check Into Lodge. She Was Found Dead With Her Mouth Blown Up

During their stay at a lodge, a fight broke out between the couple and the man then allegedly put a combustible material in her mouth and set it off.

Mysuru:
A village in the Mysuru district of Karnataka woke up to a grisly crime this morning. A 20-year-old married woman was brutally killed by her lover, who set off explosive in her mouth.

In a video from the crime scene, the woman's body was seen on a bed with the lower part of her face completely blown up.

A pool of blood was also seen on the floor.

The woman was identified as Rakshita - a resident of Gerasanahalli village in Hunsur Taluk - and the room she was found dead in was a lodge in Bherya village, where she had checked in with her lover, Siddaraju.

The woman was married to a daily wage labourer from Kerala, and was in an illicit relationship with Siddaraju, a relative of hers.

During their stay at the lodge, a fight broke out between the couple and the man then allegedly put a combustible material in her mouth and set it off using a trigger that is used to explode gelatin sticks in quarries, police said.

After the incident, the accused tried to mislead others by claiming that the woman had died due to a mobile phone blast. However, while attempting to flee, he was caught by locals and handed over to the police.

The body was later identified, and the Saligrama Police took Siddaraju into custody. An investigation into the case is underway.

15-Year-Old Band Boy Shot Dead in Celebratory Firing in MP, Family’s Sole Breadwinner Killed

In a tragic incident in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district, a 15-year-old band player named Vivek was fatally shot during a wedding procession due to alleged celebratory gunfire or a dispute.

Bhopal: A 15-year-old band player was killed after being hit by a bullet during a wedding procession in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district late Thursday night, triggering protests by his family and local residents. The incident took place near a liquor shop when a wedding procession was passing through the area. Police said the teenager, identified as Vivek, was shot during alleged celebratory firing or a dispute during the event. He was rushed to hospital but was declared dead on arrival, according to a report by NDTV.

Wedding Celebration Turns Deadly

According to police, Vivek was working as a band player at the wedding procession. He was the only son of his family and earned money by playing in wedding bands to support his household.

Eyewitnesses said the procession was moving towards the wedding venue with music and dancing when a young man suddenly fired a pistol. The bullet struck Vivek in the chest, and he collapsed on the road as panic spread among the guests.

“Suddenly, there was a loud noise and Vivek fell down,” said his friend Khilan Bansal. “We initially thought it was firecrackers, but then we saw blood and people started shouting.”

Vivek was first taken to a nearby private hospital and later referred to Bundelkhand Medical College in a critical condition. Doctors declared him dead on arrival. Medical sources said the bullet hit a sensitive part of his chest, causing severe internal bleeding, as per the report.
Following the death, tension gripped the area as hundreds of relatives and local residents gathered outside the medical college. The family staged protests outside the hospital and later near the police station, demanding that a murder case be registered against those responsible.
According to the report, the police said two possible angles are being examined. One is that the shooting occurred during celebratory firing. The other suggests that an argument broke out between two young men and the band members over playing Rai dance music, after which one of the youths allegedly opened fire at close range.

Family Stages Protest Seeking Murder Case

Police officer Jaswant Singh Rajput said one suspect has been detained, while another is absconding. CCTV footage and drone visuals from the area are being examined as part of the probe.
The district administration has provided an interim assistance of Rs 50,000 to the victim’s family. Police said further action will be taken based on the investigation.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the dangers of celebratory firing, with a wedding celebration ending in tragedy for a family that lost its only earning son.

Madhya Pradesh Police Arrest Serial Thief Who Targeted Only Cops' Homes To Settle 15-Year Grudge

A man from Alirajpur has been arrested in Khandwa for allegedly carrying out 16 burglaries targeting police personnel's homes across Madhya Pradesh.

Police in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh say they have arrested a man accused of carrying out a string of burglaries exclusively at the homes of police personnel across several districts. The suspect, identified as Deepesh from Alirajpur district, was detained following an investigation into a theft at the police lines in Khandwa on 20 January. According to officers, houses belonging to constables Karanpal Singh and Suresh Khate were broken into during the night, with jewellery and cash worth several lakh rupees reported stolen.

CCTV footage from the police lines helped investigators identify the accused. Officers say cash amounting to Rs 30,000 and some jewellery items have since been recovered.

A search operation was launched across Jhabua, Alirajpur and Dhar districts. Police say the suspect frequently changed locations to avoid detection. Acting on technical and surveillance inputs, officers received information that he was travelling towards Burhanpur.

When police attempted to apprehend him, the accused allegedly tried to flee by jumping from a rooftop, sustaining injuries to his arm and leg. He was taken to hospital for treatment before being produced in court in Khandwa and remanded to judicial custody.

Khandwa's Additional Superintendent of Police, Mahendra Tarnekar, described the arrest as a significant breakthrough. "This is a major success for Kotwali police. Based on his questioning, we are trying to trace other incidents and absconding associates," he said.

Investigators claim the suspect admitted to targeting only police households, allegedly motivated by a past incident. Station House Officer Praveen Arya said, "About 15 years ago, he was beaten by a policeman in Alirajpur. Since then, he chose to target police homes."

Police allege the accused conducted reconnaissance by posing as a street vendor near police lines before committing the burglaries at night. Two alleged accomplices, identified as Ramesh and Bhuraliya, remain at large.

Engineer, Contractor Arrested For Rs 4.6 Crore Fraud In Delhi Irrigation Department

The two accused allegedly facilitated fraudulent payments worth over Rs 4.6 crore for civil works that were never executed.

The Delhi government's anti-corruption branch (ACB) has arrested a suspended executive engineer and a private contractor for defrauding the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department of Rs 4.6 crore fraud, an official said on Monday.

The two accused allegedly facilitated fraudulent payments worth over Rs 4.6 crore for civil works that were never executed.

The irregularities relate to drainage and road projects in a north Delhi village, Siraspur, which were found to exist only on paper.

"The arrested individuals include an executive engineer of the I&FC Department who was under suspension, and a private contractor. Their arrest follows a detailed probe into the embezzlement of public funds through fictitious projects and procedural violations," the officer said.

The alleged fraud came to light during an internal inquiry that spotlighted large-scale irregularities in payments made to certain contractors without physical verification of works.

Acting on the findings, the ACB launched a full-fledged investigation.

The initial scrutiny revealed that public funds amounting to over Rs 4.6 crore were released for the construction of reinforced cement concrete drains and roads in Siraspur village.

However, on-ground inspection and technical verification found no trace of the proposed civil works.

Investigators uncovered that fake performance bank guarantees amounting to Rs 2.24 crore were submitted by the contractor and were accepted by the department without cross verification.

"The acceptance of forged performance guarantees is a grave violation of procurement norms. It is a clear indication of collusion and gross negligence on part of the officials involved," the ACB official added.

The probe also found multiple violations of the Central Public Works Department Works Manual, General Financial Rules -2005, and guidelines laid down by the Central Vigilance Commission.

Then Get Out Of Here": Minister Anil Vij, Senior Cop Argue Over Suspension

The superintendent of police said she did not have the power to suspend the cop in question because he was from another district.

A grievance redressal meeting saw a heated exchange between Haryana Minister Anil Vij and a senior police officer over the suspension of a sub-inspector accused of fraud.

The Grievance Redressal Committee meeting was held in the state's Kaithal district on Friday and among the people who brought up an issue before the cabinet minister was Sandeep Malik, a resident of Titram village, who accused a sub-inspector, also named Sandeep, of fraud in a land purchase case.

Vij, who holds the Energy, Transport, and Labour portfolios, immediately directed that the sub-inspector be suspended. Kaithal Superintendent of Police (SP) Upasana pointed out she did not have the power to do so because the sub-inspector was from Kurukshetra - which is a different district, under another SP - and this led to an argument with the minister.

"I am saying it. Suspend him," an animated Vij is seen telling the SP in a video. The police officer tries to interject and say that this will have to be done by the SP of Kurukshetra.

"You write to the DGP (Director General of Police, the state's top cop). I am saying suspend him, you just have to execute my orders," the minister says.

Upasana continues to explain and says she does not have the power to do so, which lies with the Kurukshetra SP or the DGP, and this angers the minister."Then get out of here if you have no power," Vij snaps.

"You have to write that Anil Vij has ordered this suspension," the minister says.

"I will write it, sir. I can write it, but I cannot suspend him myself," the SP responds.

"I have said it. You have to obey my orders, not give your own orders. I am saying it. Write to the DGP that I have given these orders to suspend him. I will see who doesn't do it," Vij thunders.

Upasana then says she will comply.

Asked about the exchange after the hearing, the minister said, "We are here to work for the public, all of us are here for that. Our objective is to ensure that people get justice."

Pressed on how the SP would suspend the policeman when she did not have the power to do so, he clarified, "I was not asking her to suspend him. I was asking her to write to the person who has the power and tell them these are my instructions."

At Mass Marriage Event, Bageshwar Baba's "Social Responsibility" Call To Hotels

Dhirendra Shastri said devotees visiting the Bageshwar Dham significantly contribute to the hospitality business in the region, but expressed disappointment that when he or associates of the Dham visit these hotels, they are charged full rates.

The seventh mass marriage festival at Bageshwar Dham near Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh is unfolding on a grand scale, drawing thousands of devotees and dignitaries. On Friday, the 'haldi' ceremony of 300 brides was held, with Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav attending the ceremony as the chief guest.

Addressing the gathering, the chief minister said that such social initiatives should expand beyond 300 daughters. "We should aim for 3,000 daughters," he declared, announcing a grant of Rs 51,000 for each bride as part of the state's support for the mass wedding initiative.

A statement by Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, aka Bageshwar Baba, also grabbed attention.

During his discourse, Shastri said that photographs of Bageshwar Baba are displayed in many hotels, and the lakhs of devotees visiting the Bageshwar Dham significantly contribute to the flourishing tourism and hospitality business in the region.

However, he expressed disappointment that when he or associates of the Dham visit these hotels, they are charged full commercial rates.

"We are not asking for free services," he clarified. "But when someone's business prospers because of a religious place, they too should contribute something back to society."

Shastri made a personal appeal to hotel operators, suggesting that if each hotel took the responsibility of supporting at least one girl's marriage or assisting in wedding arrangements, it would set a powerful example of social participation.

He emphasised that the appeal was not meant to trigger controversy but to encourage collective responsibility.

The President of the Chhatarpur Hotel Management Association, Bhagwat Sharan Agarwal, acknowledged that tourism and business in the district have indeed benefited because of the dham. He said around 85 hotels operate in the district and occupancy levels reach 80-90% when Shastri is in the dham.

Agarwal added that taxi operators, shopkeepers, and local service providers also witness substantial income growth because of the influx of devotees.

He clarified, however, that hotels in Chhatarpur have consistently supported the mass marriage programmes, with many providing one or two rooms free of charge during such events. "The hotels Baba referred to are in Khajuraho, not Chhatarpur," he said.

Family of man killed in Mumbai metro pillar collapse refuses to take body, seeks ₹2 cr relief, govt job

The family of the deceased Ramdhani Yadav was joined by members of the Yadav community who set a deadline of 5pm for a written assurance of their demands.

Family of the man who died when an under-construction Mumbai metro rail bridge collapsed in Mulund on Saturday staged a protest at the site of accident on Sunday and refused to take his body

The family of the deceased, identified as Ramdhani Yadav, were accompanied by members of the Yadav community and demanded ₹2 crore as compensation and a government job for one member of his family.

Following the protest, the police intervened and took the family to Mulund police station for discussion, which is still going on. Meanwhile, local MLA Mohit Kotecha and former MP Manoj Kotak are also in talks with family members.

Members of the Yadav community that gathered at the site in support of the deceased’s family gave a deadline of 5pm to the government to provide a written assurance for the compensation and the job and warned that they may stage a road blockade or chakka jam if their demands are not met.

Ramdhani was elected as the head of Bharthani village in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh from the Samajwadi Party.

What the family alleged

One of the relatives of Ramdhani, Shashikant Yadav, alleged that on Saturday night, officials from the contractor's side approached the family asking them to accept a compensation of ₹15 lakh along with ₹5 lakh relief from the government. However, the family rejected the offer and refused to take the body.

Ramdhani's family said that he is survived by three daughters and the family has to manage the expense of the education of his two daughter and their marriages also. In such a situation, they questioned how a compensation of ₹20 lakh would be enough to support the family.

The accident

On Saturday, Ramdhani was killed and three others were injured when a portion of a parapet of an elevated under-construction metro train bridge fell and hit an auto rickshaw and a car on the LBS Road in Mumbai's Mulund.

The accident took place near Johnson and Johnson factory on LBS Road at 12.15 pm on Saturday as the parapet segment fell on a passing autorickshaw and a Skoda car. An autorickshaw, in which Ramdhani was travelling, was completely crushed under the rubble.

The injured have been identified as Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav (45), Mahendra Pratap Yadav (52) and Deepa Ruhiya (40). The condition of Rajkumar Yadav was critical and he was admitted to ICU at a nearby hospital, a fire brigade official told news agency PTI.

Later an FIR was registered at the Mulund police station on Saturday evening against officials of Milan Road Buildtech and DB Hill LBG under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and other charges, police told PTI.

Following the FIR, project director Harish Chauhan, project manager Kuldeep Sapkal, deputy manager Saurab Singh and supervisor Prashant Bhoir of Milan Road Buildtech, and project manager Avdhoot Inamdar of DB Hill LBG were arrested.

CBI Court Issues Arrest Warrant Against RG Kar Financial Scam Whistleblower

Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar, was the first one to raise an alarm over the involvement of former and controversial RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh in the financial irregularities case at the state-run medical college and hospital.

A special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), here, on Friday, issued arrest warrant against Akhtar Ali, who had been the first whistleblower in the multi-crore financial irregularities case in state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, also infamous for the ghastly rape and murder of a woman junior doctor within the hospital premises in August 2024.

Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of R.G. Kar, was the first one to raise an alarm over the involvement of former and controversial RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh in the financial irregularities case at the state-run medical college and hospital.

In fact, based on his petition, a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI probe into the case of R.G. Kar's financial irregularities. Later, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) also started a parallel probe into the matter.

However, Ali's whistleblower image received a setback when the CBI submitted a supplementary chargesheet in the matter in December last year, in which it named Ali as a co-accused.

Thereafter, Ali refrained from personally appearing at the special court several times, following which the court issued an arrest warrant against him on Friday.

On Friday, Ali's counsel informed the court that his client was not refraining from physical appearance deliberately, but because he was undergoing treatment at the hospital. But that argument could not satisfy the court, and instead accepted the argument of the CBI counsel that Ali was using his physical ailment as an excuse to avoid appearing at the court.

Last year, Ali submitted his letter of resignation from service, which was not accepted, and instead, the West Bengal Health Department suspended him.

The Health Department issued a notification explaining the suspension, saying the CBI was probing financial irregularities at R G Kar on the orders of the Calcutta High Court and that Ali's role surfaced during the investigation.

As the Assistant Superintendent of RG Kar, Ali supervised the procurement of essential equipment for the hospital; later, as Deputy Superintendent, he allegedly exerted influence over these matters, the Health Department said.

According to sources, the Health Department claimed that Ali demanded lakhs of rupees in exchange for granting business opportunities to companies supplying hospital equipment.

Between 2020 and 2022, Rs 2,39,000 were reportedly deposited in Ali's account, and Rs 50,000 were credited to his wife's account.

CBI Court Reverses Discharge Of Bhupesh Baghel In 'Sex CD' Case

The reversal by the special CBI court implies that Baghel will have to face trial in the case unless he gets relief from a higher court.

CBI Court Reverses Discharge Of Bhupesh Baghel In 'Sex CD' Case

The reversal by the special CBI court implies that Baghel will have to face trial in the case unless he gets relief from a higher court.

CBI Court Reverses Discharge Of Bhupesh Baghel In 'Sex CD' Case

The CBI had named several accused, including Baghel, in the chargesheet.
New Delhi:
A special CBI court on Saturday reversed a magisterial court order that had discharged former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel from a case regarding the alleged circulation of a sleaze video purportedly depicting former minister Rajesh Munat in 2017.

The CBI had named several accused, including Baghel, in the chargesheet.

The reversal by the special CBI court implies that Baghel will have to face trial in the case unless he gets relief from a higher court.

"In the same proceedings, the court also rejected the appeal filed by the other accused, Kailash Murarka, Vinod Verma and Vijay Bhatia, against the trial court order on framing of charges," an official in the know told PTI.

The Chhattisgarh Police registered two separate FIRs in 2017 on the basis of separate complaints filed by the then state PWD minister Munat and BJP leader Prakash Bajaj.

The cases were later transferred to the CBI by the then BJP government in Chhattisgarh.

The CBI later filed a chargesheet and a supplementary chargesheet in the case.

The first case was registered at the Pandri police station in Raipur on October 26, 2017 against unknown persons on the allegation that the complainant (Bajaj) received a call on his phone wherein an unidentified caller said that he possessed a pornographic video of his "aaka"(master) and threatened to distribute it in case his demand of ransom was not met," a CBI spokesperson had said.

According to the official, the other case was registered at the Civil Lines police station in Raipur on October 27, 2017, against Chhattisgarh Congress president Bhupesh Baghel and senior journalist Vinod Verma on the allegation that they had given Munat's fake pornographic video to various social media platforms to malign his character and obtain political mileage.

Verma and Baghel denied the allegations.

The matter came to light when Verma was arrested by the Chhattisgarh Police from his Ghaziabad residence in October 2017 for suspected blackmail and extortion in the case.

When Verma was being escorted by the police, he claimed that the state government was not happy with him as it suspected that he had a "sex CD of (then) Chhattisgarh PWD minister Rajesh Munat" and suggested he was being framed.

Munat had called it "fake" and an attempt at character assassination.

Bhupesh Baghel's Son Granted Bail In Chhattisgarh Liquor Scam

The ED arrested Chaitanya Baghel in July last year in connection with its money laundering probe in the alleged scam

Raipur:
The Chhattisgarh High Court on Friday granted bail to Chaitanya Baghel, son of former chief minister and senior Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel, in two cases related to the alleged liquor scam.

The HC granted him bail in a case lodged by the Enforcement Directorate and another by the Chhattisgarh Anti-Corruption Bureau/Economic Offence Wing, ED counsel Saurabh Kumar Pande told PTI.

The ED arrested Chaitanya Baghel in July last year in connection with its money laundering probe in the alleged scam, while the ACB/EOW placed him under arrest, while he was in jail, in September in its case linked to the corruption probe.

The liquor "scam" in the state, according to the ED, was orchestrated between 2019 and 2022 when Chhattisgarh was governed by the Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government.

The alleged scam resulted in a "massive loss" to the state exchequer and filled the pockets of the beneficiaries of a liquor syndicate, it said.

As per the ED, Chaitanya Baghel was at the helm of the syndicate behind the alleged liquor scam and personally handled nearly Rs 1,000 crore generated from the scandal.

The ACB/EOW has claimed Chaitanya Baghel, along with managing the proceeds of crime at a higher level, received around Rs 200-250 crore as his share.

The proceeds of crime linked to the scam could exceed Rs 3,500 crore, the state agency had claimed.

CBI Court Rejects Mehul Choksi's Plea Against Loan Fraud Case Summons

Special CBI judge J P Darekar, in the ruling delivered on February 2, details of which were made available on Friday, held that the magistrate's order "does not suffer from impropriety, incorrectness and illegality" and hence, any interference is not warranted

A special court here has rejected diamantaire Mehul Choksi's plea against summons issued to him by a magistrate in the Rs 55 crore Canara Bank-led consortium loan fraud case.

Special CBI judge J P Darekar, in the ruling delivered on February 2, details of which were made available on Friday, held that the magistrate's order "does not suffer from impropriety, incorrectness and illegality" and hence, any interference is not warranted.

A magistrate court had in April last year taken cognizance of a chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the case and had then issued summonses to the accused in the case, including Choksi and two former Gitanjali Group employees Vipul Chitalia and Aniyath Nair.

Choksi, through his lawyers Vijay Agarwal, Rahul Agarwal and Jasmin Purani, on Friday filed a revision application against the magistrate's order.

The plea contended that the magistrate passed the order "in a mechanical manner without application of mind." The defence claimed the order issuing summons had been passed at a lightning speed on the same day of filing of the chargesheet, without even perusing it.

Additionally, the defence contended the specific role of the accused had not been stated and that the order was not a "reasoned one".

The CBI, represented by special public prosecutor A Limosin, said the order passed by the trial court (magistrate) was just and proper.

There are specific roles attributed to each accused in the chargesheet, he told court.

The special judge after, hearing both sides, rejected the claim that the magistrate's order was "mechanical, cryptic or without application of mind".

"It is clear the impugned order does not suffer from impropriety, incorrectness and illegality," the court said.

It then rejected the plea, ruling that "interference is not warranted".

The CBI has claimed Canara Bank and the Bank of Maharashtra had sanctioned Rs 30 crore and Rs 25 crore, respectively, as working capital facilities under a consortium agreement to Bezel Jewellery.

The loan was granted for the manufacturing and sale of gold and diamond-studded jewellery, but the company allegedly did not use it for the intended purposes, according to the CBI.

The company did not repay the loan, causing a loss of Rs 55.27 crore to the consortium, the agency has alleged.

Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are prime accused in the Rs 13,500-crore PNB "fraud". While Choksi is fighting for bail in a court in Belgium, Nirav Modi has been in jail in London since 2019.

Hyderabad Businessman Alleges "Third Degree Torture" In Delhi Liquor Policy Case

The Delhi government had implemented the excise policy on November 17, 2021, but scrapped it at the end of September 2022 amid allegations of corruption.

New Delhi:
The Delhi High Court has sought the ED's stand on a petition by Hyderabad businessman Arun Ramchandra Pillai challenging his arrest and remand in a money laundering case related to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam, wherein he claims "third degree" methods were applied to obtain information.

"Third degree" refers to brutality by police officers interrogating an accused.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma on Friday asked the probe agency to file a response with respect to the maintainability of the plea.

Advocate Nitesh Rana, appearing for the petitioner, argued that the March 6 arrest order of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the subsequent remand orders passed by the trial court sending him to the agency's custody and then to judicial custody were in violation of the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

In his plea, the petitioner submitted that no grounds for arrest, either oral or written, were ever provided to him, as required under Section 19(1) of the PMLA, and that this also violates his constitutional rights.

It is further contended that the remand orders did not record any satisfaction of whether the ED had materials on record to form "reasons to believe" that the petitioner is guilty of an offense under the PMLA.

"The Directorate of Enforcement, in a vindictive manner and solely as a witch-hunting exercise, has employed coercive tactics to obtain information and used third-degree measures on the petitioner/applicant herein as well as the other accused," the petition said.

The ED "was enabled to act in such an illegal manner by the impugned arrest order as well as the impugned remand orders, which in itself is grounds to quash the said impugned arrest order and the impugned remand orders,", it stated.

The ED's counsel contended that the petition was not maintainable.

The court has listed the matter for further hearing on November 3, when the petitioner's bail plea is also scheduled for consideration.

Earlier this month, the petitioner had sought bail in the case, saying there was not an iota of evidence to keep him in jail.

On June 8, a trial court here dismissed Pillai's plea for bail, saying his role was more serious than that of some other accused who are still in jail and that prima facie ED's case was genuine.

Pillai was not only a participant in the "conspiracy," but prima facie, he was also found to have been connected with different activities related to the proceeds, including its concealment, possession, acquisition, or use, and projecting it as untainted property, the trial court had said.

The ED has claimed in its charge sheet filed in the case that Pillai was a close associate of BRS MLC K. Kavitha. The ED's money laundering case stems from a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) FIR.

According to the CBI and the ED, irregularities were committed while modifying the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 (now scrapped), and undue favors were extended to license holders.

The Delhi government had implemented the excise policy on November 17, 2021, but scrapped it at the end of September 2022 amid allegations of corruption.

5 dead bodies go missing from Odisha burial ground, occult practice suspected; probe ordered

Instances of dead bodies going missing from the graves have been reported in the past in this Odisha village

In a mysterious case from Odisha's Bhadrak district, bodies of five villagers allegedly went missing from a graveyard and an investigation has been launched following the disclosure, news agency PTI reported citing police

The bodies were found missing from Maninathpur village cremation ground on the banks of the Baitarani river under Bhandaripokhari police station limits on Thursday night, said police officials.

"I have received a complaint from the villagers of Maninathpur on Sunday about the disappearance of five bodies from the village cremation ground," Rajlakshmi Nayak, inspector in-charge (IIC) of Bhandaripokhari police station, was quoted as saying.

The dead bodies that went missing belonged to Khageswar Samal, Hatabandhu Beuria, Kartik Nayak, Saraswati Behera, and Kalandi Behera. All of them had died in the last two months.

At the Swargadwar cremation ground which located on the Baitarani riverbed, bodies are traditionally buried after funeral rites, the PTI report said.

Past instances of missing dead bodies

In the Maninathpur village, this is not the first instance of dead bodies going missing from the graveyard. In 2016, dead body of a child had been dug out two months after his death, Solampur panchayat Paramananda Nayak told PTI. Dead body of another person named Anam Behera was also reportedly dug out from the grave.

The cases of dead bodies going missing from the grave continued the next year after corpses of Basanta Das, who died in a road accident, and headmaster Basudev Das went missing from the cremation ground in 2017.

Three more bodies went missing in June 2023, prompting the villagers to lodge a complaint at the police station. On April 1, 2025, when the son of Rukmini Samal, who had died of cardiac arrest, visited the burial site during the tenth-day ritual and found the grave dug up and the body missing.

Occult practices suspected

When Samal's dead body was found missing, villagers found water and liquor bottles at the site, and decomposed flesh and parts of clothes were discovered some 200 meters away. Samal's husband later filed a police complaint. The repeated instances made the villagers suspect that the bodies could have been stolen for occult practices, scientific experiments, or some other purposes.

The locals alleged that the police did not give adequate importance to the complaints lodged so far.

Bhadrak SP Manoj Rout has directed IIC Bhandaripokhari Police station to investigate the repeated missing of bodies.

"The IIC Bhandaripokhari police station was directed to inquire into the incidents and submit a report," he said.

Pregnant woman in UP assaulted, kicked in the abdomen by in-laws over dowry demand, case filed

Her husband allegedly attempted to strangle her to death, but her screams brought neighbours to the scene, police said.

Police here have booked the husband and in-laws of a pregnant woman for allegedly attacking her with the intent of causing abortion following 'repeated harassment' over dowry, police said on Sunday

According to police, a case was registered based on a complaint by two-month pregnant Taslima (30) against her husband Riaz Ahmed, father-in-law Mumtaz, mother-in-law Shakeela, brother-in-law Imteyaz and sister-in-law Sakreen Bano under sections 85 (cruelty), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 353(3) (public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act at Aurai police station on Saturday.

The police raided the residence of the accused at Tarkapur Pokhari in Mirzapur district, but all were found to be absconding, an official said, adding that searches are being conducted to nab the accused.

Aurai Station House Officer Manoj Kumar said Taslima, a resident of Peepartar Kaithan Mohalla in the police station area, was married to Riaz Ahmed of Mirzapur in June 2022. Immediately after the wedding, her husband and in-laws allegedly began demanding ₹2 lakh in cash and a piece of land as dowry.

When Taslima refused citing the financial circumstances of her parents, she was allegedly subjected to violence and cruelty.

According to the complainant, around midnight on December 22, 2025, her husband and in-laws threw her out of the house amid the harsh cold.

Kumar said after mediation by some relatives, Taslima's husband took her back on February 2, 2026, but upon discovering that she was two months pregnant, he allegedly refused to accept her without cash and land.

The complainant alleged that three days later, on February 5, she was severely assaulted by her husband and mother-in-law while her brother-in-law kicked her in the abdomen several times with the intention of causing a miscarriage, the SHO said.

Her husband allegedly attempted to strangle her to death, but her screams brought neighbours to the scene, he added.

The SHO said seeing her injured from the beating and writhing in pain, the neighbours admitted her to hospital and informed her parents. Her father subsequently brought her to Bhadohi and got her treated at a private hospital, and her condition is now stable.

Police said a case was registered on Saturday and a raid was conducted. All the in-laws have fled the house and efforts are being made to nab them.

Grand Theft in Judges’ Colony: 9 Houses in Mumbai Targeted in Robbery, Panic Over Security

Thieves burgled nine judicial residences in Amravati’s high-security Judges’ Colony, sparking safety concerns. Meanwhile, Pimpri Chinchwad police arrested a habitual offender for duping a senior citizen using a fake-officer scam.

Mumbai News: A major theft has been reported from a judges’ residential colony in Amravati, Maharashtra, raising serious concerns over law and order in the district. On Sunday midnight, unidentified thieves broke into nine houses in the Kantanagar area, five belonging to judges and four to court staff members. According to information, three judges’ homes in Naldamyanti Colony and two in the Painganga building were targeted. Additionally, four houses of court employees located in a residential complex behind the judges’ colony were also burgled.
Despite heavy police security in the area at the time, the accused allegedly conducted prior recce and targeted locked houses. They reportedly entered by scaling the rear wall using nearby bushes and escaped the same way. CCTV footage has captured visuals of the suspects fleeing. The exact value of stolen property is yet to be officially confirmed. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

The burglary at residences of judicial officers has sparked concerns over security arrangements in the state.

Pune Robbery

In a separate incident, the Pimpri Chinchwad Crime Branch has arrested a 40-year-old habitual offender for allegedly duping senior citizens by posing as a police officer. The accused, identified as Mohammed Syed Kambar Ali, was nabbed from the Ambivali area in Thane district following a meticulous investigation.
The arrest follows a complaint lodged on February 7 by a 70-year-old resident of Wakad. Two men had intercepted the victim when he was returning home from a temple. The duo posed as undercover officers and warned him of a "surge in local thefts". They further manipulated him, saying that he should not wear his gold in public.

Under the guise of "safekeeping," they convinced the man to remove his gold ring and chain, worth approximately Rs 2.23 lakh. The tricksters then performed a sleight-of-hand swap - wrapping stones in a paper packet while pocketing the actual jewellery before fleeing the scene.

'Bigg Boss' Of Chhattisgarh Liquor Scam: How Ex-Chief Minister's Son Ran Syndicate

The investigation revealed the existence of a WhatsApp group named "Bigg Boss", through which financial transactions worth hundreds of crores were allegedly coordinated.

A sprawling liquor syndicate came to light with proceeds of over Rs 1,000 crore, massive cash transfers, a WhatsApp group named 'Bigg Boss', fake holograms, and real estate empire and one man at the centre of it all - former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel's son Chaitanya Baghel.

Chaitanya Baghel, currently in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the infamous liquor scam, will also probably face arrest by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW).

On September 15, the ED filed a fifth supplementary chargesheet, running over 7,000 pages, in a special court. The chargesheet confirmed that Chaitanya Baghel personally handled more than Rs 1,000 crore of scam proceeds, and investigators say he was the mastermind who converted this illicit cash into an empire of influence and property.

The scale of the scam is staggering, with the ED claiming that Rs 1,392 crore was funneled to Congress leaders and their allies between 2019 and 2022 alone.

Scam's Origins

The liquor scam has its origins in February 2019, when Congress heavyweight Anwar Dhebar convened a meeting at a Raipur hotel. Distillers, including Naveen Kedia of Chhattisgarh Distillery, Prince Bhatia of Bhatia Wines, and Rajendra Jaiswal of Welcome Distillery, attended, along with bureaucrats AP Tripathi and Arvind Singh. At this meeting, the foundation of the syndicate was laid. It was decided that commissions would be collected per case of liquor supplied, with distillery operators promised higher rates in exchange for paying kickbacks.

Bigg Boss 'Bittu'

The investigation revealed the existence of a WhatsApp group named "Bigg Boss", through which financial transactions worth hundreds of crores were allegedly coordinated. Participants in the group included Chaitanya Baghel, referred to as "Bittu," along with Mr Dhebar, retired IAS officer Anil Tuteja, excise official Saumya Chaurasia, and businessman Pushpak. The ED's chargesheet has attached screenshots of these chats, showing in detail when "Bittu" called, how long conversations lasted, and what instructions were issued. The group functioned as a parallel command centre for the state's liquor trade, where decisions about routing cash, creating duplicate holograms, and managing commissions were made.

Evidence was also recovered from the mobile phones of Mr Dhebar, Mr Tuteja and Ms Chaurasia. In Mr Anwar's phone, Chaitanya Baghel's number was saved under the nickname "Bittu." Chats showed discussions of massive cash transfers, fake hologram production, and the sharing of black money. According to the ED, Chaitanya Baghel personally profited to the tune of at least Rs 200 crore, while another Rs 850 crore was allegedly routed to then Congress treasurer Ram Gopal Agarwal.

Modus Operandi

The agency says that the scam ran with military precision, with WhatsApp group discussions determining who would receive money, which contractors would be paid, and how much cash was to be laundered.

The syndicate's operations were divided into three parts: Part A involved commissions of Rs 75 per case, generating more than Rs 300 crore. Part B revolved around a shadow liquor market where duplicate holograms allowed thousands of cases to bypass state warehouses. In 2022-23 alone, 400 trucks of illegal liquor moved monthly, netting the syndicate Rs 3,000 per case. Part C involved a rigged licensing system called FL-10A, which gave select firms the right to sell imported foreign liquor at inflated prices, generating another Rs 211 crore.

Real Estate Swindler

The chargesheet also traces how scam money was laundered into real estate. Chaitanya Baghel's projects Vitthal Green and Baghel Developers & Associates were allegedly used as laundromats. Though official records showed only Rs 7.14 crore spent, investigators estimate the real cost at Rs 13-15 crore, with Rs 4.2 crore paid off the books in raw cash to contractors.

In 2020, in one astonishing move, 19 flats in Vitthal Green were bought in a single day by employees of liquor baron Trilok Singh Dhillon, a tactic the ED says was designed to camouflage black money. The names of prominent Bhilai jewelers also surfaced. They allegedly provided "loans" of Rs 5 crore to Chaitanya Baghel's companies and then purchased six prime plots for just Rs 80 lakh. The ED has described this as a textbook example of laundering cash moving in, property moving out, all under the guise of legitimate business.

"High Production Corruption Engine"

The ED's investigation has revealed the involvement of bureaucrats, politicians, businessmen, bottle suppliers, security contractors, and even hologram printers. Retired Chief Secretary Vivek Dhand, according to ED, was not merely a silent overseer but an alleged direct beneficiary. In the agency's words, the excise department was converted into a "high-performance corruption engine," greased with fear, favour, and fortunes.

Liquor trader Laxmi Narayan alias Pappu Bansal, considered close to Bhupesh Baghel admitted during interrogation that he and Chaitanya Baghel jointly handled more than Rs 1,000 crore in cash. He revealed that money was passed from Mr Dhebar to Deepen Chavda, and then onward to Congress leaders Mr Agarwal and KK Srivastava. In just three months, Mr Bansal claimed he managed Rs 136 crore. According to ED officials, Mr Bansal's testimony shows how deeply entrenched the syndicate was within the political establishment.

Chaitanya Baghel's Defence

Chaitanya Baghel's lawyer Faisal Rizvi has dismissed the case as politically motivated. He alleged that the arrest was illegal, based solely on the statement of Pappu Bansal, who himself is missing and against whom a non-bailable warrant has been issued. Mr Rizvi said his client had always cooperated with investigators, submitted all required documents, and yet was never summoned for questioning before being arrested. He argued that his client has been made a scapegoat to target the former chief minister.

Probe Agency ED Summons Amarinder Singh, Son In Money Laundering Case

Amarinder Singh has been asked by the federal probe agency to appear at its Jalandhar office on Thursday while his son has been asked to depose the next day, the officials said.

The Enforcement Directorate has summoned former Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh and his son Raninder Singh for questioning in connection with a Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violation case, officials said on Wednesday.

The father-son duo have been accused of being the "beneficiaries" of certain foreign assets, including a Swiss bank account.

Amarinder Singh, a BJP leader, has been asked by the federal probe agency to appear at its Jalandhar office on Thursday while his son has been asked to depose the next day, the officials said.

Sources, however, said Amarinder Singh may not depose on February 12 as he recently got admitted to a private hospital in Mohali.

The ED may give him a fresh date to appear and record his statement under FEMA.

The move is related to a September 2025 order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The high court had then dismissed petitions filed by the father-son duo seeking to stop the ED from inspecting an Income Tax Department chargesheet against them for allegedly being the beneficiaries of certain foreign assets, including a Swiss bank account.

The matter stems from "credible" information and "master sheets" received by India from the French government in 2011 alleging the Singhs to be the "beneficiaries" of foreign assets "maintained and controlled" through foreign business entities including a Swiss bank account and an asset in Dubai, held through a trust.

The I-T Department filed a prosecution complaint (chargesheet) against the two before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ludhiana in 2016 under section 277 (prosecution for making false statements or producing false accounts/documents) apart from some sections of the IPC.

The ED subsequently moved an application before the magistrate court for inspection of documents filed by the tax department, or, in the alternative, seeking directions to the complainant (I-T Department) to provide a copy of those documents as it was probing the said case under the FEMA.

The magistrate court allowed the ED plea but it was challenged by the Singhs before the court of additional district judge of Ludhiana. The additional district court upheld the magistrate court order.

The Singhs then filed an appeal against this order before the high court stating the I-T records contain "secret" information given by the French Republic to the Government of India and there was a "specific bar" on providing any such information to a stranger under the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement between the two countries.

The high court upheld the order of the additional district judge saying it was "well-reasoned" and did not suffer from any infirmity or error of law.

Convicted Indian-Origin Singapore Minister Placed Under 'Home Detention'

Singapore's former transport minister of Indian origin, S Iswaran, who was jailed last October for 12 months on corruption charges, was placed in "home detention" on Friday.

Singapore:
Singapore's former transport minister of Indian origin, S Iswaran, who was jailed last October for 12 months on corruption charges, was placed in "home detention" on Friday, a news report said.

"Like all inmates placed on the Home Detention Scheme, S Iswaran will serve his remaining sentence at his residence under specified conditions, including curfew monitoring using an electronic monitoring tag, being gainfully occupied either in work, study or training and reporting to SPS for counselling," Channel News Asia quoted Singapore Prison Service (SPS) as saying.

Iswaran began his 12-month jail term on October 7, 2024.

Under the Prisons Act, inmates who display good conduct in prison are eligible for remission after serving two-thirds of their sentence or 14 days of their sentence, whichever ends later.

According to the Channel report, prisoners serving sentences of four weeks or more and serving at least 14 days of their sentence are also eligible to be released on the home detention scheme for a period not exceeding 12 months.

SPS said factors such as conduct, progress, and response to rehabilitation during prison time are taken into account when determining eligibility for home detention.

"(Iswaran) has been assessed suitable for emplacement on the scheme as he is of low risk of re-offending, did not commit any institutional offence in prison, and has strong family support," said the prison service.

"During home detention, inmates who have approved employment can leave the home during their working hours while inmates who are unemployed usually only have a few hours out of the home in the afternoons," Adrian Wee of Lighthouse Law LLC here told the Channel.

SPS added that last year, about 44 per cent of the inmates eligible for home detention were placed on the scheme.

Iswaran pleaded guilty on September 24, 202,4 to four charges under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which forbids all public servants from obtaining any valuable thing from someone involved with them in an official capacity.

Returned from US Three Years Ago, Bengaluru Techie Stabs Retired Navy Father and Mother Over Funding Dispute

A 33-year-old man, Rohan Chandra Bhat, was arrested in Bengaluru for allegedly murdering his parents, Naveen and Shyamala Bhat, following a heated argument.

Bengaluru: A 33-year-old man who had returned from the United States was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly killing his parents at their villa in east Bengaluru, police said. The incident took place at Adarsh Vista in Vignan Nagar, near the HAL township. The victims were identified as Naveen Chandra Bhat (60), a retired Navy captain, and his wife Shyamala Bhat (55), a dentist. The accused is their son, Rohan Chandra Bhat, according to Times of India.
According to police, Rohan allegedly stabbed his parents multiple times around 8 am after a heated argument at their home. Hearing loud noises and cries, neighbours rushed to the villa and found the couple critically injured. They were immediately taken to Manipal Hospitals on Old Airport Road, where doctors declared them brought dead.

A neighbour, Madhavi Nair, who works at Manipal Hospitals, later filed a complaint with the HAL police station.
A senior police officer said Rohan had been working as a software engineer in the US and returned to Bengaluru about three years ago. Police are still verifying details related to his overseas job and the circumstances under which he came back to India, TOI reported.

Preliminary investigation suggests that Rohan was working independently on technology projects and was keen to scale up his ventures. However, he reportedly faced difficulties in raising funds.
“Rohan, a bachelor, was doing projects independently and wanted to scale. He reportedly had anxiety issues. When he found it difficult to raise capital for the projects conceived by him, he started pressuring parents to financially support his projects,” a police officer said.
Police said the parents told him they were not in a position to meet his financial demands, which led to frequent arguments at home. On Wednesday morning, one such argument allegedly turned violent, as per the report.
The accused has been taken into custody, and further investigation is underway to establish the exact sequence of events and his mental state at the time of the incident.

A Bengaluru bank assistant stole around 2.7kg of gold from customer lockers over several months to fund online gambling before being caught by police.

An assistant manager at a public-sector bank in Bengaluru has been arrested for allegedly stealing around 2.7 kg of gold ornaments pledged against loans and stored in bank lockers of 15 customers. The stolen gold is valued at over Rs 4 crore, according to the bank’s police complaint.
The accused, Kiran Kumar E, was posted at Indian Bank’s Girinagar branch. Based on a complaint filed by chief manager Dileep Kumar, police have booked him under BNS section 316 for criminal breach of trust.

The theft surfaced on February 2 when a customer, who had closed gold loan and sought release of pledged ornaments, discovered that several items were missing.

Stock Verification Exposes Tampering

Complainant Kumar as per TOI said that "Immediately, we carried out a stock verification on the 207 packets containing gold ornaments pledged with us against loans for the last one year. Of them, 24 packets were tampered with. On examination, we discovered that gold from three packets had completely missing while gold ornaments from the remaining 21 packets were partially missing."

An internal inquiry followed, during which Kumar allegedly confessed to stealing the ornaments between June 2025 and January 2026.

Gold Pledged For Online Gambling

Investigators said the accused pledged the stolen gold with private finance firms to raise money.
"Kumar pledged the stolen ornaments with different private finance firms for money. We succeeded in recovering around 1.2kg from them. However, some firms are not cooperating with us, and we are approaching court for intervention," an investigating officer said.

"The pledged gold ornaments are kept in separate lockers, and only the manager and assistant manager have the keys to them. Misusing his official power, Kiran gained access to these lockers and stole part by part," he added.
The accused was arrested, 700 grams of property were recovered, and authorities approached the court to retrieve the remaining assets.

'Tracking Live Location For Months': How Bengaluru Techie Plotted Banker Wife's Murder Plot

A Bengaluru software engineer allegedly plotted and executed the murder of his wife in December, with a Uttar Pradesh-based aide helping track her movements and getting weapon, police said.

A 32-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh was arrested by Bengaluru police for allegedly assisting a software engineer in the murder of his wife by tracking and sharing her live location in December last year (2025). Police said Abhimanyu Singh, an assistant to a gold merchant in Varanasi, was arrested for his alleged role in the conspiracy that led to the killing of Bhuvaneshwari in Bengaluru.
Bhuvaneshwari (39), an assistant manager at Union Bank of India’s Basaveshwaranagar branch, was shot dead on the evening of December 23 in the Industrial Town area under Magadi Road police station, Indian Express ported. Her husband, Balamurugan, 40, a software engineer, later surrendered and was arrested for allegedly orchestrating and executing the murder.

Planned For Months

According to police, as per the Express report, Balamurugan had planned the killing for several months and kept a knife as backup if the shooting failed. Investigators said he initially hired Tamil Nadu-based burglar Moulesh Kumar to carry out the murder. When Moulesh allegedly delayed the execution multiple times, Balamurugan is said to have carried out the attack himself.

Moulesh was later arrested by Tamil Nadu police in connection with a burglary case. During that investigation, one of the countrymade pistols allegedly procured by Balamurugan was recovered.
Police said technical evidence pointed to Abhimanyu’s involvement in the plot. “Abhimanyu came into contact with Balamurugan and often visited Bengaluru before the murder. He visited a gym located opposite the bank where Bhuvaneshwari worked. He took note of her entry and exit from the bank,” a police officer said.

On the day of the murder, Abhimanyu allegedly shared Bhuvaneshwari’s live location with Balamurugan, enabling him to track her movements before the attack.
Investigators also said Abhimanyu accompanied Moulesh to Bihar to procure two countrymade pistols used in the conspiracy. Two other associates of Moulesh, identified as Surya and Rahul, have also been named in the murder plot and are currently lodged in prison in Tamil Nadu.
Police said further investigation is underway.

Bengaluru Woman Murders Mother, Fakes it as Heart Attack For Rs 40 Lakh

A brother’s suspicion moments before cremation exposed the alleged smothering of a 52-year-old woman, leading to the arrest of her daughter and son-in-law over a suspected Rs 40 lakh murder plot.

Moments before lighting the funeral pyre, faint blood marks on his sisters face, stopped him. The sister as per the family claims died due to a sudden heart attack. "Why are there bloodstains on her face if she died after a heart attack?" he wondered. That hesitation at the cremation ground went on to expose an alleged murder plot driven by money and betrayal
The woman, B Pushpavati, 52, as per a report by Times of India had not died of a heart attack, rather she was allegedly smothered to death, and the people accused of killing her are her own daughter and son in law. Tumakuru district police, acting on a complaint lodged by her brother S Anil Kumar, arrested the couple on Friday on charges of murder. Investigators suspect greed for Rs 40 lakh was the motive.

Pushpavati, a resident of Kyatasandra in Tumakuru district, had been living alone since her husband’s death a year ago. In the early hours of Thursday (February 12), Kumar received a call saying she had suffered a heart attack. He rushed to her home by evening but noticed suspicious bloodstains near her nostrils.

When he questioned his niece, Suchitra Suresh, 30, she dismissed the marks as mosquito bites. The explanation only deepened his suspicion. Refusing to allow the hurried cremation arranged by the family, he alerted the police and stopped the body from being taken away.

Autopsy Reveals Murder

Officers from the Kyatasandra police station shifted the body for a postmortem. Doctors indicated that Pushpavati had been smothered to death while asleep on the night between February 11 and 12. During interrogation, Suchitra and her husband Suresh Kumar allegedly confessed to the crime.
Police said Pushpavati had recently sold a property and deposited Rs 40 lakh in her bank account. Investigators suspect her daughter plotted the murder to gain control of the funds.

Five Days, 250 CCTVs: How Delhi Police Solved a Brutal Blind Murder in Chandni Chowk

Delhi Police have successfully solved a murder case involving the violent death of a young man in Chandni Chowk after five days of investigation.

New Delhi: Delhi Police have cracked a blind murder case involving the brutal killing of a young man in the Chandni Chowk area, after afive-day investigation that relied heavily on CCTV footage and ground-level intelligence. One accused has been arrested in connection with the crime. According to police, the body of a man aged around 20 to 25 years was found lying in a pool of blood inside Gandhi Park near Labour Chowk in Chandni Chowk.
The victim had suffered a deep injury to his forehead. A blood-stained boulder was also found at the spot and was taken into police custody.
As there were no eyewitnesses or immediate clues, the case was initially treated as a blind murder. A case was registered under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Kotwali police station, and a detailed investigation was launched.

As part of the probe, police teams examined footage from more than 250 CCTV cameras installed across the Chandni Chowk area, including locations such as Old Delhi Railway Station, Fatehpuri, Shish Ganj Gurudwara and Pul Mithai. Alongside this, local intelligence was gathered and over 400 people, including vagabonds and daily wage labourers, were questioned.

After five days of investigation, police found a key lead suggesting that the deceased had last been seen with another man near Gandhi Park on the night of February 6, shortly before the murder. CCTV footage was reviewed again, following which a clear image of the suspect was obtained and circulated among local police teams.

Using technical surveillance and manual tracking, the suspect was identified as Junaid Khan, a 24-year-old resident of Shamli. Acting on specific information, police apprehended him on the evening of February 12 from Khoya Wali Gali in Chandni Chowk. Blood-stained clothes worn by the accused at the time of the incident were also recovered.
During interrogation, the deceased was identified as Kancha, aged around 20 to 25 years. Police said he was a vagabond who frequently stayed in and around the Chandni Chowk area. Investigators found that Kancha often targeted labourers and other vagabonds sleeping in parks or on footpaths and stole their belongings.
The accused told police that he had known Kancha for the past two to two-and-a-half years. On the day of the incident, Junaid had finished his daily wage work and consumed liquor before reaching Gandhi Park. There, he met Kancha, who was also drunk.
Police said the two spent around 50 minutes roaming in and around Gandhi Park and Chandni Chowk before returning to the park. At that point, Kancha allegedly demanded Rs 500 for prostitution and tried to forcibly take money from Junaid. The accused also claimed that Kancha had pickpocketed him several times in the past.
An argument followed, during which Kancha allegedly pushed Junaid, causing him to fall and injure his elbow. Police said the accused claimed he lost control after years of alleged harassment. During the scuffle, Junaid beat Kancha until he lost consciousness and then picked up a stone lying nearby and hit him on the head with full force, killing him on the spot.
After the attack, the accused fled the scene. Police said further investigation is ongoing to complete legal formalities and verify all aspects of the case.
The arrest has brought closure to a murder case that initially appeared unsolvable due to the absence of witnesses and direct evidence, officials said.

‘Crime of passion’ shocker from Punjab: Man killed female friend, then got her face tattooed on his chest

Investigators have recovered a suitcase, the knife believed to have been used, and the car that was used to move the body.

Two days after the semi-burnt body of a 22-year-old woman was discovered inside a suitcase near Bathinda in Punjab, the district police on Friday arrested her friend, Prince Kumar, in connection with the case. It has also been revealed that after the killing, which they described as a “crime of passion”, the accused got a photo of himself with the woman tattooed on his chest.

Investigators have recovered a suitcase, the knife believed to have been used, and the car that was used to move the body.

The victim was from Baghapurana in neoghbouring Moga district and had been living in Bathinda. The accused is a 35-year-old unemployed man who was reportedly dealing with substance abuse.
He allegedly stabbed her to death in the early hours of February 9 at his house in the Surkhpeer area, as mentioned in an earlier HT report.

Police said Prince kept the body at his house for two days. He then tried to burn it before placing it inside a suitcase.

On the intervening night of February 10-11, he allegedly threw the remains in fields near Behman Diwana village along the Bathinda-Fazilka national highway.

The exact motive is still being ascertained.

The senior superintendent of police (SSP) said Prince lived alone and no one else was involved.

Police said that after the killing, Prince got a photo of himself with the woman tattooed on his chest.

The breakthrough in the case came after CCTV footage from the Parasram Nagar area showed the victim together with Prince on February 7. This was the last time she was seen alive.
Technical examination of her phone records led police to question 15 suspects. They later identified him as the accused.

The SSP said the woman's personal life was filled with struggles. She had married against her parents’ wishes and was living separately from both her husband and the accused when she died. Her family has not yet come forward to claim the body.

Sources told HT that the body had four to five deep stab wounds. Police refused to share more details about her personal life to protect her privacy.

Garbage Piles Up As Bengaluru Residents Block Key Waste Processing Units

Locals, backed by local politicians, have stopped trucks from entering waste processing facilities, claiming that the centers are being overloaded with more garbage than they can manage

Bengaluru:
Bengaluru is staring at a fresh garbage crisis as residents living near key processing plants and dumping sites intensify their protests. By blocking truck routes and disrupting disposal operations, local communities have brought the city's waste management system to a near-standstill.

Residents, backed by local politicians, have stopped trucks from entering waste processing facilities, claiming that the centers are being overloaded with more garbage than they can manage. This has raised fears that trash may soon pile up on Bengaluru's streets if the standoff continues.

Resistance was initially reported from Mittaganahalli and Bellahalli, where hundreds of garbage trucks have been stranded since yesterday. This led to trucks being diverted to a processing unit in Doddaballapur, where they met further opposition.

BJP MLA Joins Protest; Trucks Sent Back
The protest near Doddamankala in Doddaballapur gained political momentum when BJP MLA Dheeraj Muniraju joined local residents. The MLA accused the government of attempting to divert hundreds of additional garbage trucks to the MSGP waste-processing unit, which he claimed is already under immense pressure.

Muniraju, along with locals, stopped and sent back several trucks and called in RTO officials to penalise vehicles allegedly operating without valid fitness certificates.

"The MSGP unit already receives garbage from the East and West corporations and a limited quantity from Mahadevpura," Muniraju said. "Due to a strike at another waste collection unit in Mahadevpura, trucks are now being diverted here. As soon as I learned about this, I came and stopped the vehicles. We are struggling to manage the existing load, and we will not allow any extra trucks beyond what was originally allotted to the MSGP plant."

DK Shivakumar's Sharp Warning
Reacting strongly to the protests, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar issued a stern warning to protesting legislators.

"All MLAs are blackmailing us. They say work should not be done unless funds are released. They must behave with dignity; otherwise, I will act in my own style," Shivakumar said. "Whether it is an MLA or anyone else, we will dump the garbage in front of their house or the BJP office. Yesterday it was Arvind Limbavali, today it is the Doddaballapur MLA. Where else should the garbage go?"

Shivakumar further alleged that the protests were being used as pressure tactics to demand development funds, asserting that waste disposal was being carried out as per existing arrangements.

Activists Flag Structural Problems
Civic activist Vinay Sreenivasa noted that the crisis was inevitable unless the root cause-waste generation-is addressed.

"This garbage problem has been waiting to happen. It will not end until we reduce consumption at the ward level," he said. "Enormous quantities of waste are dumped every day, especially due to [the rise in] online food orders."

City on Edge
With protests continuing and no immediate resolution in sight, Bengaluru stands on the brink of a full-blown sanitation crisis.

Delhi Couple Sent To 14-Day Custody For Racist Attack On Arunachal Women

The accused, Ruby Jain and Harsh, were produced before Additional Sessions Judge Samar Vishal, who remanded them to judicial custody till March 11

A Delhi court on Wednesday sent a couple accused of hurling racial slurs at their neighbours from Arunachal Pradesh to 14 days of judicial custody.

The accused, Ruby Jain and Harsh, were produced before Additional Sessions Judge Samar Vishal, who remanded them to judicial custody till March 11.

The married couple was arrested earlier in the day by Delhi Police for allegedly hurling racial slurs at three Arunachali women in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar area.

According to police, Ruby Jain allegedly made abusive and derogatory remarks against the women during a row over repair work at their rented accommodation on February 20

The duo was taken into custody following an investigation into the FIR registered at Malviya Nagar Police Station.

Police have invoked the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in the FIR against the arrested woman.

They said the case was initially registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, invoking charges of criminal intimidation, insult to the modesty of women, and promoting enmity between groups.

Appearing for the accused, advocate Gaurav argued that the provisions of the SC/ST Act were not applicable as the alleged altercation took place in a residential building and it did not fall within the ambit of "public view" under Section 3 of the Act.

He said the remarks were uttered in the "heat of the moment" and that the couple had expressed regret and apologised.

Responding to the incident, Union minister Kiren Rijiju and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu have said that atrocities on people from the Northeast will not be tolerated and strong action will be taken against those committing any such crime.

"It Was A Mistake": Lucknow Man Who Murdered Father, Chopped His Body

The grisly murder on early February 20, allegedly due to the father's insistence that his son clears the medical entrance exam, has left the city shaken

"Galti se ho gaya (It happened by mistake)," the 21-year-old, accused of killing his father and dismembering the body, said on Wednesday while being taken to a local court amid tight security.

The grisly murder on early February 20, allegedly due to the father's insistence that his son clears the medical entrance exam, has left the city shaken.

Confronted by mediapersons in the court premises, Akshat Pratap Singh said, "Galti se ho gaya." When pressed on how such an act could happen "by mistake", he remained silent.

Asked whether his younger sister was involved in the crime, Akshat shook his head in denial, indicating that she had no role in the incident.

Wearing a maroon pyjama and a sweatshirt, with a surgical face mask covering his face, Akshat was later escorted in a police vehicle under heavy security and sent to judicial custody.

According to the Lucknow Police Commissionerate, the accused shot his father Manvendra Singh (50) with his licensed .315 bore rifle at their residence in Ashiyana's Sector L on February 20 around 4.30 am following a dispute over the NEET examination.

Police said on February 23, Akshat lodged a written complaint at Ashiyana police station claiming that his father had gone missing. During questioning, however, his statements appeared suspicious.

"On sustained interrogation, the accused broke down and confessed to having shot his father dead with his licensed rifle following a dispute over the NEET competitive examination," police said in a press note.

According to officials, after the murder, the accused used knives and saws to sever the hands and legs of the body in an attempt to destroy evidence.

The severed limbs were wrapped in polythene and dumped in bushes near a canal in the Nadarganj area, while the torso was concealed inside a blue plastic drum kept in the ground floor of the residence.

To mislead investigators, he filed a false missing report and allegedly told neighbours that his father had gone to Delhi on urgent work.

On his instance, police recovered the torso from the drum and the severed limbs. Two knives and two saws were recovered from near the Transport Nagar railway track where they had been discarded. A burnt woollen blanket and ashes were also recovered from Anora jungle in Sarojini Nagar, police said.

The licensed rifle used in the crime, along with cartridges and other evidence, has been seized. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act at Ashiyana police station.

Earlier, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Jitendra Kumar Dubey had said prima facie the crime stemmed from anger over the father repeatedly pressuring the accused to focus on studies and clear the NEET examination.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Vikrant Vir had said a forensic team examined the spot and collected evidence and further investigation is underway.

Drama Follows Youth Congress Workers' Arrest, Cops File Case Against Cops

The dispute centres on the detention of three Indian Youth Congress workers linked to protests at the AI Impact Summit in Delhi last week

New Delhi:
A confrontation between two state police forces unfolded on a highway in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday, escalating into a rare situation in which one police unit registered a criminal case against officers from another state while both sides accused each other of acting unlawfully.

The dispute centres on the detention of three Indian Youth Congress workers linked to protests at the AI Impact Summit in Delhi last week, in an incident that has already triggered political controversy in the national capital.

The Himachal Pradesh Police had summoned the three for a fresh court appearance following their detention by Delhi Police from Shimla, which the state force deemed unauthorised for lacking prior notification.

The confrontation occurred near the Shoghi Barrier between Shimla and Solan, where Himachal Pradesh Police stopped a Delhi Police team that was transporting the detained individuals to Delhi. An argument between personnel from both forces continued for some time as Himachal authorities insisted that the suspects could not be taken out of the state without transit remand from a local court.

The situation became further complicated after Shimla Police registered a case against Delhi Police personnel, alleging that the three men had been forcibly taken from a resort earlier in the day.

Shimla Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh said officers received information on Saturday morning that around 15 to 20 unidentified individuals in plain clothes had arrived at a resort in Mandli, Chirgaon, in the Rohru area of Shimla district.

According to the complaint, the group forcibly took away three people described as guests staying at the Chansal Resort. Police said the visitors' vehicle -- a Thar -- was also taken.

Officials further alleged that the individuals removed the digital video recorder (DVR) from the resort's CCTV system without providing any documentation or receipt.

"On the basis of this information, a case has been registered at Chirgaon police station and legal action is being taken," the Shimla SP said in a press note.

The FIR names unidentified persons, but Himachal Pradesh Police confirmed that it relates to the Delhi Police team that had detained the Youth Congress workers in connection with the Delhi protest case.

Highway Confrontation

As the Delhi Police team attempted to leave Himachal Pradesh with the detainees, Shimla Police intercepted them near the Shoghi Barrier. Officials from Himachal insisted that the suspects could not be transported to Delhi without obtaining transit remand -- a legal procedure requiring local court approval when an accused person is arrested in another state.

Video footage from the scene shows Delhi Police Special Cell ACP Rahul Vikram telling Himachal officers: "We have arrested three people. You are preventing a government employee from working."

A Himachal Pradesh Police officer is heard responding: "We have filed a case against you. You are kidnapping three people. You should join the investigation."

The confrontation reflected a breakdown in coordination between two state law-enforcement agencies, an uncommon development that has drawn attention from political circles.

According to Delhi Police sources, the Himachal authorities detained over 20 Delhi officers temporarily before the matter reached the court. The Delhi Police team then accompanied its Himachal counterparts to court along with the Youth Congress workers.

Background: AI Summit Protest In Delhi

The arrests are linked to a protest staged during the AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi on Friday.

Delhi Police said four Indian Youth Congress (IYC) workers were arrested after a group entered the venue and carried out what officials described as a "shirtless protest" inside an exhibition hall.

The protesters allegedly displayed T-shirts bearing slogans against the government and the India-US trade deal. Security personnel quickly removed them from the venue.

The notice, claimed to have been mailed today, alleges that the vigilance agency has not registered an FIR despite explicit judicial directions in connection with the alleged "cash-for-jobs" scam in the Municipal Administration Department headed by Minister KN Nehru.

What The Court Said

In its order, the High Court noted that the information shared by the probe agency, which investigates financial crimes, disclosed cognisable offences warranting immediate action.

Paragraph 60 of the order, extracted in the contempt notice, states: "Though we are prima facie satisfied that the investigation could be entrusted to an independent specialized agency... we deem it appropriate that the second respondent/Vigilance Department should be directed to forthwith register a case and conduct a detailed investigation."

The bench further directed, "The second respondent/Vigilance Department is directed to forthwith register a case on the information shared by the Enforcement Directorate on 27.10.2025 under Section 66(2) of the Act and conduct a detailed expeditious investigation into the matter and proceed further in accordance to law."

The court had indicated that the failure to act could justify entrusting the probe to another competent agency.

Focus on First ED Dossier

The present controversy centres on the first of the three dossiers shared by the ED on October 27 last year.

According to submissions placed before the court, the central agency alleged large-scale bribery in recruitment within the Municipal Administration Department.

The ED claimed that bribes ranging from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 35 lakh were collected for appointments to various posts. It told the court that documents and electronic records recovered during searches revealed what it described as a "systematic and organised job racket," and forwarded the material to the DVAC under Section 66(2) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act for criminal action.

The High Court held that once such material disclosing cognisable offences is placed before a law enforcement agency, registration of an FIR is mandatory.

Allegation of Non-Compliance

In his notice, Inbadurai accused the DVAC of "persistent violation to the law of the land" and termed the continued failure to register an FIR as "contemptuous."

He warned that if the agency does not register the case and communicate the same as required by law, he would initiate contempt proceedings and seek transfer of the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation or another independent body.

"As a Member of Parliament, it is my duty to ensure the Rule of Law is upheld," he said in the notice.

DVAC Yet to Act

As of now, the DVAC has neither registered an FIR nor challenged the High Court's order.

A senior DVAC source told NDTV, "We are holding legal discussions."

With elections approaching and the court's direction explicit, the vigilance agency's next move is likely to have significant political and legal ramifications in Tamil Nadu.

Political War of Words

Minister KN Nehru has denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated and asserting he would face the matter legally.

The ruling DMK has alleged that the ED is acting at the behest of the BJP-led Centre to target Opposition leaders in non-BJP-ruled states ahead of elections. The BJP has rejected the charge, maintaining that central agencies function independently based on evidence.

Elderly Tourist's Goa Tour Ends In Deadly Collision With Speeding Thar

Bhagatram Sharma, who was travelling in a Hyundai i20 with family members, was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Assagao:
A 65-year-old tourist from Bhopal died after a rented Mahindra Thar SUV collided with the rear of the family's hatchback at the Happy Bar junction in North Goa's Assagao. The incident occurred on Monday, police said.

Bhagatram Sharma, who was travelling in a Hyundai i20 with family members, was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash. Two other occupants of the hatchback were taken to a hospital with minor injuries and are reported to be in a stable condition.

A five-month-old infant who was also in the vehicle escaped unharmed. Police said the Mahindra Thar was a rented vehicle.

Eyewitnesses alleged that occupants of the Thar attempted to switch seats immediately after the collision.

Videos circulating online show one male occupant of the Thar speaking on the phone, with the words "Papa, I was at the intersection..." audible before his voice fades, while three women are visible in the rear seats of the damaged SUV. The situation at the scene reportedly became tense as locals accused the Thar's occupants of trying to shield the driver -- allegedly a woman -- from responsibility.

The footage also shows one side of the hatchback completely crushed.

Police have seized the rented vehicle and registered a case of rash and negligent driving causing death. Officers are investigating the allegations of a 'driver switch'.

Authorities are examining CCTV footage from the junction to determine who was driving the Thar at the time of the impact. The vehicle remains in police custody.

The two injured family members are receiving treatment, while the infant is under medical observation as a precautionary measure.

Police have said the investigation will consider forensic evidence, eyewitness statements and video footage to establish the full circumstances of the collision.

‘Dragged by Hair, Beaten With Rods’: Women Attacked in Alleged Caste Clash at Telangana Temple Fair; Infant Killed

A family was allegedly attacked during the Kummera jatara in Telangana’s Nagarkurnool after refusing to pay an entry fee. The accused reportedly used caste slurs, assaulted the women and men, and attacked a two-month-old infant, who later died from injuries. Police complaint has been filed.

A family was allegedly attacked by a group of men in a "caste" clash during the Kummera jatara in Nagarkurnool in Telangana. In the scuffle, a two-month-old baby also died while the women were dragged by their hair and beaten with rods, according to a Times of India report. The argument began when the family refused to pay Rs 100 to enter the temple.
The family members then filed a police complaint, alleging that they were called "lower caste" and even assaulted when they refused to pay, as entry is usually free.

Infant

As one of the women put her infant at the feet of the accused, begging him not to beat her husband, the accused harmed the two-month-old baby, who later died. The infant was then hospitalised; however, she succumbed to her injuries on February 21, three days after the incident.

Women Dragged by Hair, Beaten with Rods

One of the kin alleged that the accused men pulled the women by the hair and threw them in front of the crowd, according to TOI report. "My younger son, Ganesh, was attacked by four people using a metal rod meant for breaking coconuts. As my son tried to defend himself, one person from the opposite group got injured after accidentally hitting the wall," she claimed.

The family further alleged that they were also robbed and their belongings, including gold earrings, silver bangles, and a phone, were taken away. The forensics are conducting a post-mortem examination on the deceased infant, and based on the PME, they will be taking the investigation further.

Threatened Not To Return

The family members alleged that they threatened to harm them if they returned to Kumera village, adding that they were scared to return to their village.
"They threatened to harm us if we returned to Kummera village and to demolish our house," the kin said in her complaint, adding that the family took refuge in Nagarkurnool as they were scared to return to their village.
The police have registered a case under multiple sections, including the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, along with an attempt to murder. They added that a counter case was also filed against Chandrakala's family, based on a complaint by the opposite party.

Armed Robbers Loot Jewellery Worth Rs 60 Lakh In Delhi's Chandni Chowk

The incident occurred at around 1:34 PM in Anar Wali Gali, a narrow lane within the busiest market in the national capital.

Three armed assailants looted gold jewellery worth approximately Rs 60 lakh from a shop in the Kinari Bazar area of Chandni Chowk in Delhi on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at around 1:34 PM in Anar Wali Gali, a narrow lane within the busiest market in the national capital. According to the shop owner, Ashok Kumar Chaurasia, who has been in the jewellery trade for over 30 years, the shop was being managed by his son at the time of the robbery.

The robbery was executed with clinical precision. Eyewitness accounts and the victim's statement describe a terrifying sequence of events: Three men entered the shop and immediately struck the salesman on the head with a pistol butt. While one assailant neutralised the salesman, the second used a cloth to gag the owner's son, preventing him from raising an alarm. The third accomplice cleared the display showcases of gold ornaments in just 14 seconds before the trio fled the scene.

The local business community has expressed deep anger over the security lapse. Pradeep Kumar Jain, President of the Gota Zari Association, criticised the Delhi Police, pointing out that the robbery took place despite a High Alert in the city.

"This incident is a massive question mark on the security of Delhiites. This is Asia's largest market, and such a daylight robbery happening while the police are supposedly on high alert for terror threats and recent blasts is unacceptable," Jain told ANI.

Following the distress call, senior police officials reached the spot with forensic teams. Police are currently scanning footage from cameras inside the shop and along the narrow escape routes of Kinari Bazar. A case has been registered, and multiple teams are working to identify the suspects based on the high-speed nature of the crime.

Local traders have demanded increased patrolling in the narrow "galis" of Chandni Chowk to protect the thousands of businesses operating in the high-value district

Rs 3,000 for 18 Km? Mumbai Airport Taxi Drivers Dupe Couple Returning from Thailand – Here’s What Happened

Sahar police have moved to cancel the taxi permits and driving licences of two drivers accused of overcharging an American tourist Rs 18,000 for a short ride. Both remain in custody.

Mumbai News: The Sahar Police arrested two cab drivers for allegedly cheating a couple from Wadala of 1,000 Thai baht (about Rs 3,300) at the Mumbai International Airport. The couple had just arrived from Thailand on February 8 and hired a cab to go home. The accused, Imtiyaz Ahmad (34) and Riyasat Ali Khan (48), were arrested after the couple filed a complaint the next day, a media report said. Police are now checking if the drivers may have tricked other passengers in a similar way.
According to police, the couple – Darshan Sawant (29), a fitness trainer, and his wife Monica – were approached outside the airport by a man offering a cab to Wadala Fire Station in Antop Hill. He first quoted Rs 550, then agreed to Rs 400. Khan allegedly made the couple get into a taxi driven by Ahmad and rode along, according to The Times of India.

Shortly after the taxi started, Khan asked the driver to stop and demanded Rs 400 immediately, saying he needed to maintain accounts for multiple cars. The couple said they did not have Indian cash and offered to pay via Google Pay. Khan insisted on cash. When the couple said they only had Thai currency, he allegedly took 1,000 of the 1,100 Thai baht they had, gave Rs 400 to the driver, and left.

After reaching home, the couple realised the money was missing and filed a complaint. Police seized the taxis and have applied to the RTO to cancel the drivers’ licences and permits.

US Tourists Deceived

The Sahar police have completed the process of initiating the cancellation of taxi permits and driving licences for two drivers who were accused of overcharging an American tourist Rs 18,000 for a journey of just 400 metres. The police have sent all the necessary documents regarding the taxi permits to the Tardeo Regional Transport Office (RTO) and the documents related to the driving licences to the Andheri RTO, reported news agency UNI.
Senior Police Inspector Manoj Chalake of the Sahar police station said the police would closely monitor the entire cancellation process to ensure it is carried out properly.
The case gained attention after a social media post by Argentina Ariano went viral nearly 15 days after the incident. She shared her experience on January 26, stating that she had landed in Mumbai and taken a taxi to the Hilton Hotel. According to her post, the driver and another man first took her to an unknown location, charged 200 US dollars, equivalent to Rs 18,000, and later dropped her at the hotel, which was only 400 metres away. She mentioned the taxi number MH 01 BD 5405 and tagged Mumbai Police and traffic authorities with the hashtag #scam.

Nephews Chase Uncle, Ram His Car Before Shooting Him Dead In UP: Cops

Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi said the victim, identified as Veeresh (52), was on his way to a Shiv temple on Sunday afternoon when the incident took place under Garhiya Rangeen police station limits.

Shahjahanpur:
A 52-year-old man was allegedly shot dead by one of his nephews after the latter repeatedly rammed his car, sending it off the road, police said on Sunday.

Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi said the victim, identified as Veeresh (52), was on his way to a Shiv temple on Sunday afternoon when the incident took place under Garhiya Rangeen police station limits.

According to the officer, five nephews were in hot pursuit of Veeresh, following him in three cars.

When the victim's vehicle crossed Garhiya Rangeen, a car driven by one of the nephews allegedly rammed his car multiple times, causing it to veer off the road and plunge into a roadside ditch.

Subsequently, a fight ensued between the uncle and the nephews, during which Veeresh was shot dead, Dwivedi said.

Preliminary inquiry suggests an ongoing land dispute between the uncle and nephews may have led to the killing, he added.

Police have taken the body into custody and sent it for postmortem examination.

No formal complaint has been received so far in this regard, the SP said, adding that a detailed probe is on

Six Deaths, One Woman, Countless Lies: Inside The Mind Of Kerala's Cyanide Killer Jolly Joseph

Jolly Joseph eliminated six members of the family she married into, over a period of 14 years. The deaths in Kerala's Koodathayi district, were first dismissed as natural. But in 2019, it was claimed that the pattern pointed to something far more sinister: cyanide poisoning.

Between 2002 and 2016, six members of a single family in Kerala's Koodathayi, a quiet village in Kozhikode district, died under circumstances that were initially written off as natural or accidental - heart attacks, suicide, choking, sudden collapse, etc. However, an year later, in 2019, investigators would allege that these deaths were not coincidences, but carefully staged killings involving cyanide. The woman at the centre of it all was Jolly Joseph, who married into the family in 1997. And what stunned Kerala was not just the number of deaths, but the method, and the mind behind it.

First, A Look At All The Deaths

2002 - Annamma Thomas dies: In 2002, 57-year-old Annamma Thomas returned from a walk and had a glass of water at her home. However, she soon felt dizzy, collapsed and died. Doctors said it was a heart attack

2008 - Annamma's husband Tom Thomas dies: Six years after Annamma's death, her husband Tom Thomas collapsed and died. In both cases, the presence of Jolly around the deceased was noticed. However, no alarm bells rang. The deaths were mourned - and buried.

2011 - Jolly's husband Roy Thomas dies: In 2011, Jolly's husband Roy Thomas was found dead inside a bathroom that was locked from inside. The death was initially ruled a suicide by consuming poison, and linked to financial stress. However, years later, inconsistencies surfaced after details of the post-mortem report became available. Family friend Mohammad Bawa recalled. "When he (referring to Roy's brother Rojo Thomas) read the post-mortem report, he found out that what Jolly told us was wrong. Jolly told us Roy had food at 3.30 pm and hadn't had food after that. But it was clear in the post-mortem report that he had rice and Bengal gram curry at 8.30 pm.

Medical experts later stated how unusual the toxicology findings were. Dr VV Pillay, head of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, explained: "Acute cyanide poisoning can result in death in a matter of seconds. Cyanide does not accumulate in the body and so it is rare to encounter it in slow death cases."
That statement would later become crucial in understanding the alleged pattern.

The Deaths Continue

2014 - Roy's maternal uncle Mathew Manjayadil dies: Mathew reportedly died after consuming whisky that was laced with poison.

2014 - Roy's niece Alphine Shaju dies: That same year, two-year-old Alphine Shaju, daughter of Roy's cousin Shaju Zachariah, died after "choking on food".

2016 - Alphine's mother, Sily Shaju, dies: Sily Shaju, wife of Shaju Zachariah, died after she consumed a mushroom capsule that Jolly gave her, allegedly telling her that it would help her with energy and depression.
Six deaths over fourteen years. And in every situation, there was one constant presence - that of Jolly Joseph.

The Web Begins To Unravel

It was Roy's brother Rojo Thomas who demanded that the cases be reopened. In 2018, he filed multiple RTI applications and accessed the autopsy report of his brother. The inconsistencies between what Jolly had told the family and what the medical report revealed, deepened his suspicion about her.
Soon after Roy's sister Renji Thomas formally approached teh police, demanding a probe into what she described as six unnatural deaths.
In October 2019, Jolly Joseph was arrested. She was 47.
Investigators alleged that she had used cyanide in all six deaths. According to police, she obtained the lethal chemical with the help of MS Mathew and Praji Kumar. Mathew, a jewellery shop employee and a distant relative of Jolly Joseph, allegedly procured cyanide from Praji Kumar, a goldsmith, after offering him two bottles of alcohol and Rs 5,000. Jolly had reportedly told Mathew that she needed the poison to kill a stray dog.

Jolly Joseph's Double Life

If the killings were chilling, the persona Jolly allegedly constructed was equally startling. Originally from Kattappana in Idukki district, Jolly was a first-year college dropout. However, she told neighbours that she was an M.Com. graduate working at NIT Calicut. Every morning, she would leave home dressed for work - a job investigators later said did not exist. Those who knew her described her as "jovial, friendly, jolly and pious".
Yet behind the "pious" persona lay fatal secrets. Jolly reportedly harboured feelings for Roy's cousin Shaju. After Roy's death in 2011, she continued living within the same extended family circle. In 2016, following Sily's death, Jolly married her husband Shaju.
The pattern, investigators believe, was not random.

Inside The Mind: Power, Control And Reinvention

Criminal psychologists and behavioural analysts point to several recurring traits and patterns in the case:
1. Social Camouflage: Jolly allegedly created an image of piousness, duty, education and high professional stature. The fake academic credentials and job indicated a deep need for social validation and status within an environment that is socially competitive.

2. Calculated Patience: The deaths occurred over an extended time period of 14 years. Jolly chose cyanide, which acts fast and is difficult to trace without suspicion. Experts say that such long gaps between crimes often indicate a perpetrator who believes that they are intellectually superior to those around them.

3. Control Through Elimination: Many analyses suggest that the deaths removed obstacles - be it emotional, financial or relational - from Jolly's path. The alleged killings were always followed by changes in property control and marital dynamics.

4. Emotional Detachment: Investigators were struck by the composure Jolly allegedly maintained between all the killings - attending funerals, consoling relatives, and continuing daily life without visible distress.
Experts and analysts say that a reading of Jolly Joseph's personality based on patterns described in court documents, police accounts and reportage point to the following traits:

1. High Social Intelligence: If the allegations are true, one of Jolly's most striking traits is her ability to read people and situations, say experts. She embedded herself deeply within the family structure, earned trust, and positioned herself as reliable and competent. Her ability to maintain a false academic and professional identity for years suggests an ability for sustained social performance. It shows strong impression-management skills, i.e. the ability to control how others see you.

2. Emotional Control: Reports consistently describe her as calm - attending funerals, consoling relatives, managing rituals. Experts say that if someone can allegedly participate in mourning rituals for deaths that they caused, it reflects extreme emotional compartmentalisation. That may not necessarily mean mean absence of emotion, but it shows an ability to wall off emotion when chasing a goal.

3. Patience Over Impulse: The long timeline of killings - spread over 14 years - suggests patient deliberation, rather than impulsive volatility. Serial offenders who operate over long intervals often exhibit a belief in their own cleverness. They test boundaries, grow confident, and refine method.

4. Control As A Core Motive: Many analyses suggest that the deaths coincided with changes in property or relationships. Analysts believe that this indicates instrumental behaviour, i.e. removing perceived obstacles in one's path. This is less about rage and more about control.

Koodathayi: A Village Betrayed

The Koodathayi case drew national attention not only for its brutality but for the breach of trust it represented. These were not strangers. They were family. Six deaths that once passed as fate are now part of one of Kerala's most disturbing alleged serial murder cases.
Six funerals. One woman. And countless lies that, investigators say, held for 14 years - until they didn't.

Bludgeoned With Hammer, Sexually Assaulted: Chandigarh Woman Murdered by Neighbour At Home

In Chandigarh’s Daria village, a 35-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered by her neighbour inside her home. The accused reportedly broke in, attacked her with a knife and hammer when she resisted, and fled. Police have registered a case and begun an investigation.

In a shocking case of crime, a 35-year-old woman in Chandigarh was stabbed to death by her neighbour in Daria village after being sexually assaulted, the police said, according to a Times of India report. The incident happened on Saturday at noon, when the accused allegedly tried to harass the woman before murdering her with a hammer and a knife.
The woman was alone at her home when the incident happened. Her husband, who is originally from Lalganj, Uttar Pradesh, was at work while their children were at school.

What Happened at the Woman's House?

Vinod, the accused, who lived in another room on the second floor of the same house, broke into the woman's room and tried to rape her. When she resisted the assault, he allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed her repeatedly.

The woman, in a state of pain, ran around the room, asking for help. However, no one was available. A shop owner heard her, but did not intervene, assuming it was a domestic dispute, TOI reported. Later, the accused hit Seema on her head with a hammer, knocking her unconscious.

Relative Also Hit With Frying Pan

A relative of the woman, Lalit, arrived at her house, and as he peered through the window, he saw her lying in a pool of blood. The accused was also sitting next to her body.
When he tried to open the door, the accused allegedly attacked the man too and hit him with a frying pan. As neighbours heard the screams, they gathered and entered the house.
They rushed the woman to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The family of the woman alleged that even after receiving information, the police did not arrive immediately.
The police have now registered a case against the accused and have arrested them. The man will be interrogated for the crime. The police also recovered the weapons used in the crime.

The accused have been identified as Arjun, Robin and Vijay Sagar, residents of Uttarakhand. Arjun, whose death was staged, is an accused in a rape case. He devised the fake death ploy along with the others to escape sentencing in the ongoing trial, the officials told PTI.

SSP Abhinandan Singh said the village head of Chorkhurd informed police on February 25 about a burnt car with a charred body inside, found parked on the roadside between Chorkhurd and Chandpur villages.
A police team rushed to the spot and identified the vehicle on the basis of its burnt number plate and registration details. The car was originally registered in the name of a resident of New Tehri in Uttarakhand. The vehicle was last bought on February 16 by Arjun Kumar, PTI reported.

Soon after, Vijay Sagar, along with Robin Kumar, approached the Gagalhedi police and claimed that the burnt car belonged to his brother Arjun, who had left home with Robin on February 24. He further claimed that Arjun had been missing since then.

A case was registered, and an investigation was taken up by Sub-Inspector Rambeer Shakya, according to Singh. The SSP said that on February 28, police arrested Arjun, Robin, Sharik and Vijay Sagar near the Badkala flyover.
During interrogation, Arjun confessed that in 2024, he worked as a driver at a beauty parlour in Dehradun, where a woman employee lodged a rape case against him at the Dalanwala police station. He claimed he was jailed for about six months and feared life imprisonment as the trial is underway.

To evade conviction, Arjun allegedly hatched a plan to fake his own death.
Police said that during the COVID-19 lockdown, he had lent money on interest, and Rohit from Mohammadpur Kandhela village owed him about Rs 1.7 lakh.

Nursing a grudge after Rohit failed to repay the amount, Arjun allegedly conspired with Robin and Sharik, whom he had met in jail, to kill Rohit and pass off his body as his own.
According to police, Arjun bought the Alto car and on February 24, he and his accomplices brought Rohit to the spot after allegedly intoxicating him.

Arjun and Sharik allegedly strangled Rohit with a muffler and placed the body on the driver's seat to stage an accident. They loosened a wheel bolt and placed a rod on the roof to make it appear like a mishap before pouring petrol into the car and setting it ablaze, police said.

Arjun sustained minor burns in the process. The accused then fled, according to police.
Arjun later cut his hair in Dehradun to conceal his identity and allegedly used a SIM card procured in someone else's name. He also asked his brother to lodge a missing person complaint to make it appear that he had died in the incident.

In a shocking case of crime, a 40-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh allegedly killed four members of his family with an axe, while injuring his elder brother over a long-standing property dispute, the police said. The incident happened in Basantpur Rudal village, which falls under the Rupaidih police station limits in Bahraich, according to a Times of India report.
The accused, Nirankar Verma, attacked the family with an axe for 30 minutes on late Sunday night, killing them all, while injuring one.

How It All Started?

Verma first attacked his father during an altercation over the division of ancestral property. The argument escalated when the accused demanded his share of the money. When his mother, sister and grandmother tried to intervene to calm the situation, he turned on them and killed them too.
After hearing the screams, his elder brother Gurudev Verma rushed to see, but was also attacked by the accused and sustained severe injuries. His brother is currently undergoing treatment at a district hospital.

Accused Tried To Kill Himself With Brick

After killing his family members, he tried to kill himself by repeatedly hitting his head with a brick. He fell on the floor due to excessive bleeding. The locals and neighbours heard the scream and reached the house, where they found the bodies lying on the floor.

They called the police officials, who then took the accused into custody and shifted him to a hospital.

Minor Nephew Witnessed the Attack

A 10-year-old boy, Gurudev's son, witnessed the horror while hiding in fear. He was the sole witness to the attack and stayed inside after seeing the brutal attack by his uncle.
The UP police have taken him into protective custody and are recording his statement, TOI reported.
