CSA NAMES NEW CAP HAMZA FOR PAKISTAN TEST SERIES, RECALLS OLIVIER

Thursday, 06 December 2018

ZUBAYR HAMZA, the 23-year-old World Sports Betting Cape Cobras batsman, has been named as a potential new cap in the Standard Bank Proteas squad for the three-match Test series against Pakistan which starts at SuperSport Park, Centurion, on December 26.

The other matches will be played at PPC Newlands from January 3 and at the Bidvest Wanderers from January 11.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced a 13-man squad for the series today that also features the return of VKB Knights fast bowler Duanne Olivier in place of the injured Lungi Ngidi. Olivier was part of the squad for the previous home Test series against Australia and has represented the Proteas in five Test matches.

“Zubayr has been one of the standout cricketers in domestic cricket over the past year and carried that form into the South Africa A tour to India where he averaged over 50 in the four-day series against tough opposition and under tough conditions,” commented CSA National Selection Panel (NSP) convener Linda Zondi

“Before that, he had an outstanding season in the four-day franchise competition where he scored 823 runs, including three centuries, at the impressive average of 69.

“His selection is part of our vision for the future as we start to feed new players into the system. It is inevitable that some of our senior players will start thinking of retiring in years to come and it is vital that we have a good succession plan in place,” explained Mr. Zondi.

“As unfortunate as Lungi’s injury is we are blessed to have outstanding depth in our fast bowling resources. Duanne has impressed on his previous appearances for the Proteas and has had a good franchise season to date with 20 wickets in his five matches at an average of 22.80.

“Tladi Bokako will work with the squad as a learning experience during the series in a continuation of the initiative we started with Kagiso Rabada and continued with Matthew Breetzke earlier in the season. He has had a good debut season for the Cape Cobras with 21 wickets at 26.33 to date.

“We will continue to identify young players with the potential to become future Proteas,” concluded Mr. Zondi.

If Hamza gains selection in the final XI he will become the 100th player to represent the Proteas in the five-day format.

Standard Bank Proteas Test squad: Faf du Plessis (Multiply Titans, capt), Hashim Amla (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Temba Bavuma (bizhub Highveld Lions), Theunis de Bruyn (Multiply Titans), Quinton de Kock (Multiply Titans), Dean Elgar (Multiply Titans), Zubayr Hamza (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Keshav Maharaj (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Aiden Markram (Multiply Titans), Duanne Olivier (VKB Knights), Vernon Philander (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Kagiso Rabada (bizhub Highveld Lions), Dale Steyn (Multiply Titans)

Philander! :jimmy
Steyn!! :sanga
Rabada !!!:abbas1

Our boys will have nightmares about facing these beasts except for maybe Technique Shafiq

Looking at that line-up of bowlers, it doesn't matter which batsmen they have - SA are always going to be favourites at home against most opposition.

Decent bowlers but Steyn and Philander are in decline.

Weakest South African batting line-up since at least the 1950’s.

Easy win for Pakistan. Gotta take those freebie wins. Will donate my J. kurta shalwar if we lose, but we won’t. Best pace attack Pakistan has had since pre 2010 Asif+Amir. Those were just 2 guys now we have a full pack of 4, Amir might not even be the main enforcer, let that sink in.

Good send off for Amla chacha as well. Have never been more confident.

Hmmm. Tricky test for our batsmen.

Wouldn't be too confident. Abbas might not play because of injury, Shaheen and Hasan are inexperienced and you never know which Amir will show up the hot or cold one.

So PAK can expect a lineup of

1. Elgar
2. Markram
3. Amla
4. Zubayr
5. Faf
6. Bavuma
7. Qdk
8. Keshav
9. Philander
10. Rabada
11. Steyn

Interesting. I think Zubayr is a very good talent and wil lgive them a lot of stability in the middle order.

Boy this looks like its going to be a nightmarish tour for Pakistan. That pace attack on those tracks is going to be really tough to negotiate. And they dont even have ngidi.

Their bowling is always going to be a challenge but addition of this zubayr kid gives their batting , which was weakened by ab's retirement, some depth as well.

3-0 with possibly 2 innings losses. Struggling on dead pitches. Imagine the humiliation on the pitches of SA.

SAF vs Pak
1. Elgar 1. Azhar Ali
2. Markram 2. Abid Ali
3. Amla 3. Haris Sohail
4. Zubayr 4. Asad Shafiq
5. Faf 5. Babar Azam
6. Bavuma 6. Saad Ali
7. Qdk 7. Sarfaraz Ahmad
8. Keshav 8. Yasir Shah
9. Philander 9. Hasan Ali
10. Rabada 10. Shaheen Afridi
11. Steyn 11. Mohammad Abas

If Abas is not fit then Amer should play.

I bought tickets for the 2nd test in Cape Town. I'm quite excited to see my two favourite teams battle is out. I was actually looking forward to seeing Steyn vs Hafeez. Too soon? :P Then again, I hope Steyn doesn't break down (again).

Good luck! :steyn

i hope like all good Test teams SA go in with 5 five bowling options & bat Vernon at 7 .

Bro who do you think is the better team here player wise?

SA batting aint great, but sadly our batting so poor it will stop us competing in the series. I can see our bowlers doing well.

I'd fancy Pakistan's chances in getting 20 wickets each Test, but don't fancy too many of ur batsmen to score 20 runs in each of the Tests.

Steyn is ordinary now.

Philander trundles even harder. Both Philadar and Steyn are living on reputation.

Rabada is a gun bowler.

Ngidi - The guy that could destroy Pak batsmen is absent. He is a beast. Big loss for SA.

SA batting without ABD looks very ordinary. Series could end as a draw.
