Danushka Gunathilaka suspended for 6 international matches [Update Post #10]

Colombo - Sri Lanka Cricket on Thursday slapped a six-match ban on all-rounder Danushka Gunathilaka for "misconduct" during the recent series against India which the islanders lost 9-0.

The cricket board had ordered an investigation last month following a complaint from team manager Asanka Gurusinghe against the 26-year-old player.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said Gunathilaka was also fined 20 percent of his annual contract fee for violating the board's constitution as well as the terms of his contract.

"The charges relate to misconduct and behaving in a manner unbecoming of a player, and the breach of several clauses of his contract which relate to fitness and discipline," an SLC official said.

An SLC statement said Gunathilaka pleaded guilty to the charges without spelling out what exactly they were.

Sri Lanka suffered the embarrassment of losing all nine international matches in their home campaign against India.

Virat Kohli's visitors took the Test series 3-0 and then won a one-day international series 5-0 before triumphing in the lone Twenty20 international by seven wickets in Colombo earlier last month.

Gunathilaka has also been dropped from the squad for a five-match ODI series against Pakistan in the UAE.

Gunathilaka, who made his international debut in 2015, averages 42.41 in 12 ODI matches he played this year.

He came to cricket match with no gear, didn't do fielding drills and was giving attitude according to the big cricket news website. Don't understand how people who are new to international cricket can become this arrogant in short time ?

This makes more sense. I was surprised that he was dropped as I saw him during that innings against India in the CT and he looked like a good player but I guess you can't have this attitude and not expect to be punished.

The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket yesterday (16) decided to revise the suspension imposed on Dhanushka Gunathilaka upon consideration of the appeal made on behalf of Gunathilaka by the Sinhalese Sports Club.

Gunathilaka was served a 6 International match suspension and imposed a fine of 20% of his Annual Contract fee having been found in breach of Section 30 of the SLC Constitution and several terms of his contract.

Accordingly, Gunathilaka will now serve a suspension of 3 International matches (instead of 6) and be fined 20% of his Annual Contract fee, whilst he will serve the balance 3 International matches as a sentence suspended for one (1) year, whereby he shall be suspended for three matches in the event of any further breach during the said period of 1 year.

Sri Lanka vs South Africa: Danushka Gunathilaka suspended in middle of second Test over misconduct charge

Colombo: Batsman Danushka Gunathilaka has been suspended over a misconduct charge in the middle of Sri Lanka's second Test against South Africa, the country's cricket board said Sunday.

The 27-year-old opener will be barred from all forms of the game pending the outcome of an investigation, the board said, without specifying the alleged misconduct.

The suspension will go into effect after the Test is concluded in Colombo, it added.

The board will also "withhold Gunathilaka's fee for the ongoing Test match until the outcome of the inquiry", it said.

The batsman scored 57 and 61 runs in the second and final Test, with Sri Lanka on track for a series whitewash after trouncing the visitors in Galle last week.

South Africa were 5/139 chasing an impossible-looking 490 target at the close of play Sunday.

Another member of Sri Lanka's Test squad, leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay, was on Friday given a suspended one-year ban from international cricket after pleading guilty to misconduct during last month's tour of the West Indies.

Danushka Gunathilaka suspended for 6 international matches

Sri Lanka Cricket has suspended Danushka Gunathilaka from six international matches for breaching the ‘Player Code of Conduct and Contractual Obligation’. Of these six, three matches will be effective immediately, as Gunathilaka has violated the ‘Player Code of Conduct and Contractual Obligation’ during the recently-concluded Test between Sri Lanka and South Africa, at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo. The other three matches are given from a suspended sentence of a year, which Gunathilaka was already serving since 18th October, 2017, for breaching the ‘Player Contract,’ in an earlier occasion. Gunathilaka will also have to forego match fee for the concluded second Test at SSC, mentioned above.

A friend of Gunathilaka was arrested under allegations of rape of a Norwegian woman in a hotel room. Gunathilaka was not charged but was detained for questioning by the police. Nevertheless, he breached the SLC Code that made him ineligible to stay outside his room after midnight or to accommodate guests in his room during matches.
