What a great innings, massive scoreboard pressure and Warner comes out and destroys the bowlers to score 144 off 143 balls to cruise past the follow on and put Australia in the drivers seat. He just smashed and crashed the bowlers into oblivion.

Is just to match upto other such threads? Are you trolling dude?

Lifeless pitch and insipid bowling. No batsman is more dangerous in this situation than Warner, scoreboard pressure or not.

Comfortably the most dangerous player in the world at the moment.

Kusal Mendis scored a better ton against Australia, surprised you rate this higher.

Well targeted thread, lol.

Anyway, a massive ton under scoreboard pressure.

Is this due to the overreaction to Azhar's double?

Its due to Warner scoring 144 runs off 143 balls opening the innings under massive scoreboard pressure against one of the best if not the best bowling teams, you know the sort of innings you wished Williamson could play.

this is a mediocre attack stop over hyping just a decent knock.

I don't rate Williamson that highly :))

Well played Gilly, well played. Or should I say

NOOOOIIIIIICE GILLYYYYYY!

If I am being blatantly honest Warner's innings was more substantial in the context of the game than Azhar's.

Azhar's innings took nearly 400 balls to get 200 which means by the time he finished, Pakistan could not lose the match, but winning also looked a distant possibility.

Warner started with his team 450 in arrears, and even though he scored 144, he opened the Test Match right up for both teams.

If Australia collapse now, Pakistan have a chance again. If Australia keep thrashing the runs, Pakistan have to bat at least 2 sessions on a 5th day pitch.

Who would you rate higher? Matter of preference.

But whose was more substantial? Definitely, Warner.

I will let you judge that, lol. Gilly will leave enough clues.

Here's the big clue, when Warner came out to bat Pakistan were confident that they could win the match, they thought they were in control of the match, 450 runs on the board to exert scoreboard pressure and ready to pile on the pain for Australia.

Within 143 balls Warner has turned the whole match around, Pakistan have no chance what so ever of winning this match and could end up fighting to draw it if they don't get their act together.

This massive turn around in the match due to Warner, I cant think of a match where the fortunes have been turned around by such an extraordinary innings of brutal hitting and domination of the bowlers.

And not a poor Man's sehwag at all. This guy is a beast :afridi

Brilliant knock. But knock of 2016? Not sure about that.

That disicntion is with Mccullum who scored 145 (79) at the start of the year vs Aussies. team tottering at 74/4 and to play that kind of a knock was unbelievable. IIRC Kiwis scored some 250 runs in a 30 over period!! Surreal

He will remain exactly that unless he improves his record outside Australia and South Africa.

Sehwag has played far more substantial innings outside Asia than Warner has in Asia.

Average innings. Flat track against a horrible bowling line-up. Have seen a better and chance-less innings in this match alone. :azhar2

Better innings than Azhar's for sure. Warner is every cricket fans dream. Can also do a big leap to.

Warner is gonna go down as a better batsman than Sehwag. Especially when you consider all formats. Sehwag was just a very good ODI player. Not a great one.

The price for that innings was that it took nearly 400 balls.

The way Warner plays, Pakistan were lucky he didn't stick around for 400 balls because he would be close to 400 by then.

Good innings no doubt but still lost by 7 wickets, didn't do much to change the match or put Australia under pressure. Warner has broken Pakistan and put his team into an unbeatable position, Pakistan were full of confidence and now are shattered and Misbah is acting like he has only 5 fielders.

You still need to win the match.

Barring a miracle by Australia I only see a draw.

Exactly, before Warner demolished the bowlers Pakistan thought they had a great chance of winning the match, now there is no chance of that. Even if they get in a position to set a target Warner will be on their mind and they will be far to conservative to put pressure on Australia.

It's the reason we're looking at a draw and not down the barrel of defeat.

It was a tremendous knock.

Reminded me a bit of Sehwag's quickfire 80 in pursuit of England's 380 target in the final innings in Chennai. Completely turned the entire match on its head over the course of a session.

Although I don't think this is the best knock of the year.

Dude have you been living under a rock? Or just weren't on PP because of the beating dished out by our tailenders? Bar a couple of optimistic Pakistan supporters, most of here were/are of the opinion that this match was/is headed for a tame draw.

We aren't looking at barrel of defeat because rain took away at least 90 overs.

And because of Azhar Ali's resolve and temperament. Let's not forget it was his knock that set up the platform for Sohail Khan's and Amir's knocks.

I don't see what you're trying to get at? We're losing because of Azhar's slow knock? Or we're losing a bit later because of Azhar's slow knock+ rain? Make up your mind.

Still don't think this is a result match unless Pakistan do their thing on the last day.

Neither.

I am saying we aren't winning because we bat too slow most of the time.

And when the opposition scores way too fast, we will find ourselves in trouble unless rain intervenes most of the time.

Azhar's knock was as fine as they come. He could have batted a tad faster, but then he wouldn't get 200.

Criticism of Azhar being a slow starter is more than justifiable, but he's more than made up for it here at the end with a sr or 56. Sure it's not close to Warner's but for someone who's just played a marathon innings it's acceptable.

Yes that too against a GOAT attack of Sher Khan, Crown prince, Fast and furious and Messi. Not to mention GOAT part timer Azhar Ali.

Any unbiased poster would know that the top 2-3 knocks of 2016 were by Kohli,Karub and Lokesh for forcing results on flat pitches despite losing the toss.

Sehwag underachieved a lot in ODIs. Warner along with QdK is the best ODI opener around. In Tests, he has a long way to go before he can match Sehwag.

I don't agree that he's the second best batsman in the world after Kohli. He is simply the best at what he does, but he doesn't amount to anything outside his comfort zone.

whose karub? karun nair?

its funny the unbiased indian picks all indians for top 2-3 knocks lmao :)))

or maybe im missing the sarcasm. in that case my apologies

Kusal Mendis' 176 was better than all of those.

But how many double hundreds are scored with a faster SR than 56? Most double hundreds hover around the 50-60 SR mark. In the 1st innings a score of 200 @ SR of 56 is not just acceptable, but its brilliant. If an opener had scored that in the 1st innings any India test, I would be more than ecstatic.

Its just unfortunate that his innings has been overshadowed by a brilliant one from Warner. There are not many players who can score doubles at a higher SR. Warner, Sehwag and McCullum are the only ones that I can think of. When one of these guys scores such a 100, then we should just admire the brilliance, and not complain about a guy who has just scored a double 100 and had put his team in prime position for a result. You need to remember, had Pakistan not declared, Azhar Ali would have probably carried his bat. And that is a special achievement.

On top of that, you know what you'll get with Azhar. A free flowing, stroke making innings is not expected of Azhar. That has never been his job in the team. He is the player that will hold one end up and accumulate. Expecially when he is around, I would expect the other batsmen to play attacking cricket. If you remove Amir and Sohail Khans innings, your other batsmen gave absolutely no impetus to the team. Azhar scored 205 of 360 odd balls. THe other top batsmen scored 125 in 300 balls.

I think people are underrating Misbah's Lords century

Now where did I ever say Azhar's century was useless.

I said it was a tad slow, but that's all fine.

I just said Warner's innings was more substantial.

Of course, leaving out Azhar, the entire team plays way too slow.

it could b one of best this year.
out of nowhere, suddenly brought back Aus into game and could b in winning position. Aus are only 165 behind at moment, if they bat quickly and add another 300-330 in a day tomorrow (if we get full day), then you never know about Pakistan team.

Fair point. If I were a Pakistani selector, I would try Sharjeel to open (try him for 2-3 series at least), push Azhar down at 3, and Umar Akmal at 6 (try him as well for 2-3 series), with Asad Shafiq at 5. This team would be able to adapt to situations and have batsmen who can score at a decent rate.

Obviously, this should be implemented when both Misbah and Younis retire.

It's a fantastic innings considering how it's effectively changed the outcomes of this test. Pakistan will be glad for time off.

Yes, just like this is the worst thread of 2016.

Struggling to even win in your own den psh, and you know why? Because of Azhar's DOUBLE ton - something Warner couldn't manage and obviously won't be able to manage outside his backyard.

lol what? Did you miss the fact that 90 overs have been lost to rain.

If today was close of play on day 2, then Aus would have had ample amount of time to bat on day 3, get a lead of 150 odd, and ask Pakistan to bat on day 4.

Ben Stokes' 258 was better, Misbah's Lords ton and YK's double at the Oval were also better(debatable though)

Nice bait Gilly, but the best ton was already scored on a much tougher deck with only one centurion on either sides.
Clue: It was in Australia, but not scored by an Australian. ;-)

Phenomenal talent Dave Warner. Always have loved his batting. Hopefully he doesn't score too much tomorrow though.

To qualify it must be against a good team, remember Warner has scored his against the best team away from home and the bowling must be quality also and Warner scored against one of the best if not the best bowling attacks. Scores against inferior teams with weak bowling attacks don't count. :19:

If they criticize the pitch - Azhar's innings is devalued.

If the pitch is balanced - Warner's innings will have to be deemed better than Azhar's.

If they criticize their bowling attack - they will have to concede Aussies are better and that Starc > Amir and Yasir isnt really different from other bessht spinners in the world who get a hiding in Aus.

So what's left? Did he get dropped twice or thrice? Maybe that could be it.

Or wait, did Warner have the pressure of scoring ton for a team that went through fixing mess in 2010? No, right? Ahan! gotcha. Azhar > Warner, case settled!

Good innings.

This pitch is super flat. These days I do not rate any hundred on Aussie pitches.

Just see how Starc got plundered and Yasir got totally destroyed so far.

I was thinking Warner would score a triple the way he was scoring by tea tomorrow.

Aha... i get it, not many would meet such a criteria. Only a select few, but a certain someone could counter argue about Asif not being part of this tour. Don't forget how "unlucky" Butt has been for not being included for no apparent reason. An "incompetent and misguided" jury cost him selection for this tour.

Nonsense. In fact, it was Warner who was lucky with all them edges and being cleaned up of a no ball.

You cant possibly say Warners innings was better than Azhar due to strike rate. Different batsmen have different styles. Warner is naturally a faster scorer.

Azhar scoring over 200 in Australia is the equivalent of an Aussie scoring 200 in the sub continent. It is a major feat, and there is no way it should be compared to a regulation 100 on home conditions with a huge slice of luck.

I fell asleep after Warner reached his hundred but I gotta say, that was one major fluke innings up until then.

Perhaps I'm looking at it through my green-tinted glasses, but there were several edges with the Australian commentators even commenting that he had struggled at times and wasn't at his best.

Nevertheless, he still managed to survive and make 144 runs and that's what counts at the end of the day.

Kusal Mendis 176 is the best knock of the year

Nothing tough about scoring a run a ball hundred on the same day another guy got a double hundred and still another guy got to stumps within one shot of raising his own hundred.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice effort, but come on, it probably wouldn't even make the top 10 this year:

Mendis 176
Shafiq 137
Nair triple hundred
Azhar triple hundred
Kohli 3x double hundreds
Misbah Lord's hundred
Younis double hundred
etc.

Its due to Warner scoring 144 runs off 143 balls opening the innings under massive scoreboard pressure against one of the best if not the best bowling teams, you know the sort of innings you wished Williamson could play.

He should got a two hundred
There's no way Australia can win this match now
They should be whitewashing teams especially at Melbourne

Potentially match winning knock from Warner!!!

Brilliantly timed and paced innings. He made a match out of nothing. Australia will wipe the deficit and all they need is a lead of around 150.
Pak succumb to pressure big time. I really hope they prove me wrong but I see that happening tomorrow.

Agree, Warner has made sure that Pakistan will have to fight for a draw here with Australia taking a lead of 150-200 runs.

Would've, could've, should've.

Similarly I can say that Sohail wouldn't have been lazy, Wahab would be more responsible, and Yasir along with Azhar would've taken us to 550.

He should've been MOTM even though I don't think it was the best knock of the year

That was a match winning knock, this is why strike rate matters, if you play boring cricket and waste balls, you are boring the crowd and lying to yourself. In today's era you need to play boom boom and make a name like Warner and De Kock.

Warner for captain.
