The BJP on Friday (August 9, 2024) questioned the “silence” of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over the safety and security of the minority communities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government

In the Lok Sabha, MP Anurag Singh Thakur said the leaders cutting across party lines were concerned about what had transpired in Bangladesh and had also talked about the safety of the minorities there.

Through a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (August 8, 2024) congratulated the head of the interim government in Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, but also expressed hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities, he said.

Mr. Gandhi also complimented Mr. Yunus via an X post. However, Mr. Thakur said, the Congress leader did not mention anything about the security of Hindus and other minority communities. “What was the compulsion...?,” he asked, stating that on Gaza, the main Opposition party’s leaders had given statements on several occasions.

BJP spokesperson C.R. Kesavan took to X, accusing the Congress of hypocrisy. “Blatant hypocrisy of the Crooked Congress. On issues like Gaza, long prompt social media posts were put out by the Congress to draw attention to the issues people faced there. PM @narendramodi ji urged Mohammad Yunus to ensure the safety of Hindus and all other minorities, when congratulating him. However, there has been deafening hypocritical radio silence from the Congress on the safety and welfare of Hindus and other minorities in neighbouring Bangladesh,” he said.

Another BJP leader said Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had not uploaded any post on the issue. “This is in stark contrast to the social media output put across by them on issues like Gaza, where long posts were done to bring attention to the issues being faced by the people there,” said the leader.

India has arrested nearly a dozen Bangladeshis attempting to cross the border to escape violence and political tumult following deadly protests that led to the ouster of prime minister Sheikh Hasina, border officials said on Monday

Hundreds more are waiting along the frontier pleading for permission to cross, India’s Border Security Force (BSF) said.

Hindus are the largest minority faith in mostly Muslim Bangladesh, and are considered a steadfast support base for Hasina’s party, the Awami League.

After Hasina’s abrupt resignation and escape to India ended her 15 years of autocratic rule on August 5, there were numerous reports of attacks against Hindu households, temples and businesses.

India’s BSF said 11 Bangladesh nationals had been arrested since Sunday trying to “sneak” across the frontier into West Bengal state.

“Several hundred Bangladeshi nationals are still waiting in no-man’s land to cross over the border,” BSF deputy inspector general Amit Kumar Tyagi told AFP.

Bangladesh is almost entirely encircled by India, with the border stretching for more than 4,000 kilometres, large parts of which are unfenced.

Four Bangladeshis were also “repelled” from India’s Assam state, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on social media platform X.

‘Safety and security’
New Delhi has kept a wary eye on the fall of Hasina, who pursued a delicate balancing act of enjoying support from India while maintaining strong relations with China.

Hindus account for around 8 per cent of Bangladesh’s 170 million people.

Over the past week, religious rights groups said they documented more than 200 incidents of attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh, a figure that also includes Christians and Buddhists.

The security situation has since dramatically improved, and on Monday Bangladeshi police resumed patrols of the capital Dhaka, ending a strike that left a law and order vacuum.

So let me get this straight, OP has not blamed Bangladeshi Islamists for killing Hindu's but penning down all blame to Indian govt for not passing a law that can protect them. If Ulta Chor Kotwal ko daate ever had a face.

Have condemned their actions in other threads too but due you have the guts to condemn Israel's atrocities. Please do so to appear less biased

yes, you condemned the islamists by creating the so called "fact check" thread, that attack on hindus is secular, not religious.

Fact check: Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh were not religiously driven

Different between some indian and Pakistan posters here. We condemn attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh but some indians here are yet to condemn Israel @sweep_shot

  • Post #989 from Why anti Muslim bias is so profound among Hindutva supporters?

That's right.

I have always condemned attacks on innocents (whether Hindu, Muslim, or from another religion).

BJP Indian posters can't seem to condemn attacks on Muslims be it in Israel or in India. They tend to make excuses which is shameful.

You said that the attacks on Hindus in BD is not religious based. That is condemnation or white washing and gaslighting?

Yes, you condemned by gaslighting religious based violence and turning it secular.

I think you have comprehension issues, where did i make a selective condemnation. Its an open condemnation of all act of violence against innocent BD Hindus no matter by whom. And the fact tact thread is based on a ground report that gave the general finding.

The fact check thread said that attack on hindus was not religious based. But that is wrong.

Because temples were attacked. Not a single mosque was attacked.

That thread cannot stand a basic logical test and is factually wrong.

It didn't give a sweeping comment but presented a general finding. Some cases would have happened but thats not the main reason it suggested

It didn't say like the way you are putting it now. It emphatically denied that attack on hindus was not religious based.

Truth becomes the first casualty, buried beneath layers of distorted narratives and misleading information.

While Modi government is getting trolled for not taking in BD refugees, what is the opposition doing?

50% of BD Hindu population is Dalit. I am pretty sure, it is them facing the brunt of the violence on Hindus. Yet we are are hearing crickets from Dalit champions like Congress, BSP, SP and all Dravidian parties.

Shame on left parties in India. No vocal support for the oppressed downtrodden Dalits of Bangladesh.

It’s the upper caste BJP and RSS and VHP that are making all the noise. Shame on Dalit champions of India.

Bangladesh The Latest In BJP's Divisive Diplomatic House Of Cards Collapse

After weeks of student-led mass protests, Bangladesh was thrust into political turmoil. This marked an abrupt and dramatic end to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's 15-year rule in the former Pakistani territory.

The relentless protests began after quotas were imposed on government jobs amidst severe economic challenges faced by a young population. Matters escalated into a broader and violent anti-government uprising. A nationwide curfew and suspension of internet services were enacted. As PM Hasina accused the protestors of 'sabotage', the protest organisers returned to the streets as part of their 'non-cooperation movement', demanding the prime minister's resignation. Local media reports suggested that the government's harsh response worsened the unrest as protestors, security forces, and ruling party activists clashed on the streets of Dhaka and other cities. The deadly violence claimed over a hundred lives, while thousands more were injured or incarcerated. When all her authoritarian efforts to crush the protests failed, PM Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to neighbouring India on August 5.

The ouster of Sheikh Hasina and her government created a power vacuum in the eighth most populous country in the world, and unruly mobs gained strength to target the leaders of the Awami National Party and its allies. There have been reports of attacks on Hindus, which comprise about 8% of Bangladesh's 171 million strong population, apart from other minorities such as Christians and Buddhists. The interim government, led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, insists that the reports of violence against minorities are "exaggerated and often fake" and that whatever violence is taking place is political, not sectarian. As the interim government attempts to restore law and order in the country, there is a pressing need to ensure the perpetrators of violence are brought to justice, and the victims are fairly compensated for their losses. According to the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council head Oikya Parishad, there have been more than 200 incidents where temples, religious crematoriums and other places of worship have been vandalised and attacked by mobs.

Owing to the widespread violence, thousands of people in Bangladesh have been attempting to take refuge in India. There is grave panic among Bangladesh's Hindu community, and thousands have gathered at the Indian border, seeking to cross over to what they believe is safety. However, on August 5, as Hasina boarded a helicopter out of the country, the Indian government decided to shut the 4,100 kilometre-long border and suspended the railway network to Bangladesh. Although Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his concern over the reported attacks on minorities in Bangladesh on 'X', formerly known as Twitter, his reluctance to help the Hindu minorities in Bangladesh is ironic, given his party's (Bharatiya Janata Party) strong commitment to Hindu nationalism - especially in neighbouring countries. The fact that they have offered asylum to Sheikh Hasina, the main culprit of the violence in Bangladesh, further aggravates the pain of affected minorities.

The BJP government cannot effectively build a cordial relationship with Muhammad Yunus's interim government as long as they provide asylum to his staunchest political foe, former PM Sheikh Hasina

The big question is why the BJP government has made such a seismic shift in its policy pertaining to minorities' protection in neighbouring countries despite being the orchestrator of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019. Responding to objections raised by human rights organisations, Modi's government has insisted that the law was not discriminatory against Muslims but rather a means to protect those escaping religious persecution in other countries. In my opinion, the answer is rather straightforward: the BJP government is more interested in bringing the interim government into its political orbit than protecting Bangladesh's religious minorities. The BJP government cannot effectively build a cordial relationship with Muhammad Yunus's interim government as long as they provide asylum to his staunchest political foe, former PM Sheikh Hasina. That the BJP government continues to provide asylum to Sheikh Hasina adds to its dilemma. This is especially important after it emerged that New Delhi actively lobbied Washington to adopt a lenient approach towards the Hasina regime despite her autocratic tendencies.

Following fervent campaigns for the protection of religious minorities, like the CAA 2019, and efforts to pass legislation against Hinduphobia at the United Nations, the BJP government has become hostage to its own political rhetoric. In fact, many political parties in India across the spectrum have decried BJPs' inaction regarding the crisis in Bangladesh. Recently, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray echoed these sentiments in the following words: "If Prime Minister Modi could stop the war in Ukraine, he should also take similar steps in Bangladesh and save the Hindus."
