Update on Shaheen Shah Afridi

Dubai, 29 August 2022:

The Pakistan Cricket Board today announced Shaheen Shah Afridi has departed for London where he will complete his rehabilitation.

PCB Chief Medical Officer, Dr Najeebullah Soomro: “Shaheen Shah Afridi requires uninterrupted, dedicated knee specialist care and London offers some of the best sports medical and rehabilitation facilities in the world. In the best interest of the player, we have decided to send him there.

“The medical department will receive daily feedback on his progress whilst in London and we are confident Shaheen will return to full fitness before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.”

Whilst in London, Shaheen will remain under the supervision of the PCB Medical Advisory Panel, which also comprises London-based Dr Imtiaz Ahmed and Dr Zafar Iqbal. Since 2016, Dr Imtiaz has been the Head of Medical Services at the Queens Park Rangers Football Club, while Dr Zafar is Head of Sports Medicine at the Crystal Palace Football Club since 2015 (having worked previously with Tottenham Hotspur FC, Liverpool FC and Kent County Cricket Club).

Shaheen suffered a PCL injury in July whilst fielding during the first Test against Sri Lanka. He is expected to regain complete fitness before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, though his return to competitive cricket will be decided upon by the PCB Medical Advisory Panel.

That means his injury is very serious.....
Get well soon Shaheen.... world cricket needs you...

Really sad to see Pakistan's best cricketer out injured like this. Hope he'll make the 2023 WC in India because we'll need him.

Strange that it's taken PCB nearly 6 weeks to finally decide to send Shaheen Shah Afridi to London for treatment. This despite medical advice to PCB stating that Shaheen needed to be sent to England as soon as possible after the injury last month.

They’ve made his injury even worse and reduced the chances of a complete recovery, Shaheen may never be the same again.

PCB are mentally shot

Really sad to see this happen.
We could plainly see it coming, it's only a surprise that it took so long.
In addition to bowling in every single meaningless game, I had also noticed for a long time his tendency to dive in the field. He kept doing it again and again.
Terrible mismanagement, plain for all to see before it happened.
And then not to send him immediately for medical attention, taking him along to the Netherlands, for god's sakes, and putting him on the front lines of meet and greet the Indian team in Dubai.

Before his departure for UK

While speaking on on a TV show, Shahid Afridi:

“Injuries should not be taken lightly. If you don’t look after it properly, the injury is likely to worsen"

“I’m sure Cliffe [Deacon] tried his best but he might not been able to understand the situation clearly. However, Shaheen will be in good hands in England under Dr Zaf [Zafar Iqbal]"

Mohammed Hafeez has launched a scathing attack on the Pakistan Cricket board for their handling of Shaheen Shah Afridi's injury and said that the board wasted time by delaying the decision to send him to London for the rehabilitation process.

The left-arm pacer got injured during the Sri Lanka tour and was forced to sit out the ongoing Asia Cup 2022. The 22-year-old has been travelling with the squad and it was revealed recently that he would be completing his rehabilitation process in London.

In the statement by PCB, Chief Medical Officer Dr Najeebullah Soomro said that Afridi will require uninterrupted, dedicated knee specialist care.

"In the best interest of the player, we have decided to send him there. The medical department will receive daily feedback on his progress whilst in London and we are confident Shaheen will return to full fitness before the ICC Men's T20 World Cup."

Taking to Twitter, Hafeez shared a video where he was critical of PCB's treatment of Afridi. As quoted by NDTV, the former Pakistan skipper said that the 22-year-old has to be looked after the right way and said that the board just wasted time after he got injured.

Hafeez said that PCB should have sent the pacer to London the moment he sustained the injury instead of delaying it.

"My problem with Shaheen is that he is not just Pakistan's product but that of the world. The world wants to see him. We have to look after him in a right way."

"The things that I read and heard over the last few days, there was an official post. So this time period of 4 weeks or 6 weeks or 8 weeks - since the time he got injured, I think wasting this time is a criminal act."

"A product like Shaheen, who is not just Pakistan's but the world's, and we have more such cricketers who have a fan following across the world, we need to look after them properly. This is why I feel they have now understood that and sent him to England," Hafeez continued.

"I feel they should have taken this decision when he got injured in the first place. They should have settled their findings straight away and should have sent him for the best rehab to England or wherever else," said Hafeez.

Fair play to Hafeez. PCB wants to do everything on the cheap, Shahee's injury-no problems have him go with the national team, national team head coach-no problem, have some random corporation dole out some pennies to the first available non-coach.

Fire Rameez.

The video with Indian team itself made many realize how bad it was, no one expected that.

PCB is ridiculous as usual.

If this is a rumman raees type injury than his career can end.

I also found it weird that shaheen travelled to uae with the team

Not only travelled - but he was also seen at practice!

Seeing his leg I fear he could be a doubt for the coming WC. It is a major concern and serious worry for the team and fans. He should have been rested for this rather irrelevant tournament.

Idiotic again by PCB. They generally think they can blag their way through everything.

It doesn’t look good and especially it being the right leg where for a left armer it’s takes the burden of the whole body during delivery stride is no joke.

There is no need to rush him for the T20 World Cup. These world cups will come round every couple of years. The main thing is he makes a complete recovery In’sha’Allah

Credit goes to rameez raja

Before blaming Ramiz blame sign-board coach Saqlain. What this guy is good for? Has no say any selection, don't have any strategy, not identify injury..... Press only

Saqlain is coach, he is not admin. To send shaheen to uae instead of working with the doc and cordinating and getting an immediate check up isnt on him.

Its rameez and the team docs duty.

Pakistan were playing Shaheen too much. Didn't manage workload well.

For example, Pakistan played Shaheen in some of the meaningless bilateral T20 games. He should've been rested for those games.

Hafeez can sometimes snipe on the sidelines a bit much but he's right.

Shaheen is our best all-format bowler by a country mile. No expense should've been spared in sending him to the best knee specialists in the world.

He may not make the World Cup because of this foolishness.

Hafeez has more common sense and brains than most people give him credit for. It's refreshing to see an ex Pakistani cricketer who actually knows what he is talking about.

For example, Pakistan played Shaheen in some of the meaningless bilateral T20 games. He should've been rested for those games.

This injury had nothing to do with workload. Shaheen had not played much cricket prior to the Sri Lanka series. This injury happened because he made a bad dive while fielding.

From time to time I question if PCB really is the most inept cricket board going around and if SLC or WICB haven't taken their place. But with things like these you are simply reminded that no, PCB is the undisputed king.

This is a sackable offence for Ramiz and his lackeys/cohorts. Really a new standard bearer for ineptitude by this consistently inept cricketing board.

Seems that get Shaheen read for the game against India in the T20 World Cup is the order of the day!

LAHORE: Pakistan’s pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi is expected to be available for the national side’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup opener against arch-rivals India on Oct 23.

Shaheen injured his knee during Pakistan’s tour of Sri Lanka in July and was ruled out of the ongoing Asia Cup T20 despite being named in the preliminary squad.

The left-armer travelled to the Netherlands with the team for the three-match One-day International series against the hosts and to the United Arab Emirates for the Asia Cup.

Although the Pakistan Cricket Board had claimed before the Netherlands series that Shaheen would continue his rehabilitation while accompanying the national squad, he was sent to London for what the board’s chief medical officer Najeebullah Soomro termed as “uninterrupted, dedicated knee specialist care”.

The step raised questions if the PCB realised the seriousness of the injury in its early stages. The belief at the board’s higher offices is that Shaheen will be available by the start of the T20 showpiece in Australia.

“The PCB medical team has been receiving daily reports over the knee injury status of Shaheen and we expect the bowler will be there with the national team to play against India on October 23 in the World Cup match,” PCB’s chief executive officer Faisal Hasnain told Dawn on Thursday.

“From Sri Lanka to London, the PCB has been following the advice of the medical team and if they advise Shaheen to have treatment in the US then the PCB will follow that too.”

Faisal said the decision to keep Shaheen with the team for the Netherlands tour and the Asia Cup was taken to have the PCB’s medical experts at the bowler’s disposal in person.

“We are receiving good reports from London on Shaheen’s recovery and the decision to keep the bowler with the national team was taken because our best medical experts were travelling with the team so he (Shaheen) could get every possible help on time,” said the PCB CEO. “Shaheen is our national asset and one of the top world class bowlers.”

Pakistan is scheduled to host the 2023 Asia Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy but there are questions over the preparedness of the national stadia, which have not hosted international tournaments since the 2008 Asia Cup.

Faisal, who joined the PCB in December last year, admitted that the venues were far from ready to accommodate big international events. The 62-year-old said the PCB had to align their stadia according to the standards set by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

“We have to sign different agreements with the ICC to meet its requirements and it will take a couple of months,” Faisal said.

“Then the ICC consultants will come to Pakistan to visit the stadiums to point out what they need more,” he added, admitting the time was running short.

Apart from upgrading the stadiums, the PCB has also revealed its plans to build hotels near the stadiums to accommodate the visiting teams. The board’s chairman Ramiz Raja has mentioned numerous times that the step needs to be taken to control the amount of problems citizens have to face due to heavy security.

Faisal said a couple of locations have been spotted in Lahore for building the required infrastructure and that data was being gathered regarding the issue.

Faisal revealed that another extension will be given to the ad-hoc bodies of the six provincial cricket associations on Sept. 4 with the club scrutiny project still incomplete.

The previous extension was granted six months ago with the expectation that a private firm — hired for club scrutiny — will help the PCB get closer to the district and provincial level elections, which haven’t took place since the implementation of a revamped PCB constitution in 2019.

The revamp wasn’t limited to the board’s administrative structure. It also saw the domestic cricket system switch from the departmental cricket model to the representation of just the six associations side in it.

The step meant the role of departments — which used to employ hundreds of cricketers — ended. Last year, the then ruling government implemented the step across all sports. Recently, however, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced the departmental system will be restored.

Faisal said the PCB had not received any such notifications from the government and will continue to stick with the current domestic structure.

The former ICC official also defended the PCB’s decision to take the full ownership rights of the inaugural Pakistan Junior League — slated for October — after its team ownership rights went unsold despite initial plans to conduct the PJL as a franchise-based tournament.

Faisal believed the PJL was a “great” initiative and said the PCB would hold it “at a world-class level”.

“We should feel proud that the PCB has introduced the league at the junior level and all the cricket boards appreciated the idea and allowed their players to participate in it,” he said.

Faisal said 80 per cent of the PCB funding was being spent on cricket and the remaining on administration adding that the number of the PCB staff was high because the PCB was managing the affairs of all the stadiums, a practice alien to the developed world of cricket.

The official said he had almost 40 years experience of working in various sectors and wished to deliver all his experience for the betterment of Pakistan cricket.

He also hinted that the PCB is planning to add former one-day cricketers to its pension scheme.

“Currently the scheme is limited to Test cricketers but the point is being considered to expand it to the ODI cricketers too,” said Faisal.

Too much negativity here. Perhaps Shaheens injury was complicated and not easy to diagnose. Sometimes medical professionals can provide different opinions for treatment for the same issue, injury and getting second, third opinions are not uncommon.

Besides the Pakistani team management needs to develop our bowling bench strength and the bowlers need to learn how to sink, swim without Shaheen. Shaheen also has a knack of bottling under pressure in crucial stages of the match so this is not a bad thing.

Encouraging news coming from England that Shaheen Shah Afridi has made good progress and will be fit for the World Cup.

Hopefully in the T20 WC he's fully fit and bowls deliveries with the mesmeric artistry of Wasim (not much of an outswinger, I know) and the fiery savagery of Johnson :wasim:mj. That'll surely bring up a storm.

As far as the tweet is concerned, not really a threatening picture to match the quote. SSA looking like he's posing in a Ralph Lauren shoot.

I would rather Shaheen take his time and come back from the injury in a proper, less hassled way. It appears the PCB is aggressively rushing him before he is 100% ready. If he were to aggravate the knee injury before it is 100% ready, he could be out for a long time.

Umar Gul's career ended after his knee injury.

Ramiz in an interview.

"I had a chat with Shaheen, a day before yesterday. He said that he hasn't felt this good in ages. So, the progress is very good. The doctors had sent the video and he is currently 90 per cent fit. But he said that he will be fit in time and ready for battle"

I have a bad feeling about this.

India game isn't important. Shaheen is.

I have a bad feeling about this.

India game isn't important. Shaheen is.

Pakistan won the WC 92 without Waqar.

Haris is bowling well enough and M Waseem maybe our death bowler. This leaves one pace bowling position open between Naseem, Hasnain and Shanawaz. I would go with Hasnain if Naseem is not fit.

He seems very passionate about cricket hopefully he doesn't risk himself to play in worldcup

Shaheen should play the two warm up games before the actual world cup.

Was it necessary to play Shaheen in this heat in Multan?
