What's new

Do you like South Indian food?

Because Indian masses and politicians are fools who change names for political mileage.

Calcutta turns into Kolkata.
Calicut turns into Kozhikode.
Bangalore turns into Bengaluru.

West Bengal should turn into Bengal but no......that's not logical.

so were these the names before 1600-1700s?

so when are you changing the name of India?

is it still called India assuming it was given by british?

Touche!

We will, once we reclaim all the lost parts of what was once Bharat :P

Lol that's stuffed pearl spot fish in a banana leaf....totally different from pav bhaji.:D

Should try one when you are in Alappuzha.:19:

:)))

I thought is was mashed vegetables. Now I can see the fish there.

so were these the names before 1600-1700s?

I don't know about other places, but, yes Kozhikode/Alappuzha, etc were the names before the british.

in all honesty are there ppl who want the india name to be removed?

No to my knowledge. Please don't give us ideas ;)
Constitution has 'Bharat' mentioned besides India, though.

Looks amazing. I think I have tasted this in Allepey, it looked very similar. Is this fish full of bones..?

Yes, it has a lot of bones, but it is not a problem.

These are popular in houseboats - caught from the lake on the same day and cooked in the boat.

Most non-malayalees will find 'puttu' difficult to eat, but posting this anyway.

bhai why do you remove the name of the poster when you quote them lol?

Have you tried apple cake from iyengar bakery? During the days when I was short on money, I used to have just two apple cakes for lunch (because most of my salary would go entertaining a malayali on the phone).

Are u talking about dil pasand? If not then no i have not tried apple cake.

No, it looks like a ball..nothing to do with an apple, but is still called an apple cake.

I like gongura daal. Has a thick consistency and is mildly spicy. Out of all souther states, I like AP food most suited for my taste. Least being Kannadiga food.

South Indian food is a absolute delight. I love Idli sambar, vada, masala dosa and parotta.

Lot of new vegetarian ingredients being added to the existing recipes:

Paneer,Mushroom,Soya 65, New kind of masalas for Dosas its nice to see all that.

Ironically I love Punjabi food for their lipsmacking meat dish varieties like butter chicken masala and tandoori chicken dishes.

Don't judge me FC:srt

Yes. Punjabi non veg cuisine is pretty delicious.

I am no one to judge mat eaters, if people wanna kill to eat, its their choice.

Punjabis also have plently of vegetarian food.

Yeah south indian food too has many meat dishes but south indian food is predominantly known for its vegetarian dishes atleast globally. I was talking in that sense.

No da, Indian Food is known globally for vegetarian dishes not south indian food. South is not limited to Tamil nadu. Kerala and AP have a huge non vegetarian cuisine. In india all cuisines have a balance of veg and Non veg. But extreme north east has more of Non veg and gujrati has more of veg cuisine.

Agreed. Actually south Indian food isn't (or wasn't) as popular as north indian food in the west, so not many westerners have an idea about south indian dishes except the generic idly and dosas, although the situation has probably changed a bit now. I said so because I've seen western culinary shows recommending south indian food for vegetarians and vegans (as that is the fad over there) because of its variety of veg options. But you are right, probably tamil food is more popular for vegetarian food eventhough there are a lot of great veg dishes in Andhra and Karnataka cuisine as well. Kerala cuisine is more known for its sea food dishes.

I used to eat these two snacks at a nearby joint everyday after heavy work during my internship along with my north indian friend (he used to love it). It should come with a warning though, it's a powerful sedative and will put you to sleep within minutes:asif

What is the non-vegetarian dish of Gujarat you have heard?I was in Ahmdeabad last week and oh man they are predominantly vegetarian and only snacks are good, other stuff is pretty bland for me and i'm a vegetarian!

I went to Somnath and that is basically a fishing town so the only local dish for them is Fish which too is not eaten beyond that city.

Vegetarian Punjabi dishes beat every vegetarian dish for me eventhough Tamil/Telugu vegetarian are great but still i can't have them every singe day because not great for workout.(white rice oriented).

Although the new recipes introduced w.r.t to Ragi and Millet are good, Millet Sambar Sadham,Ragi Dosas but they coz lot of heat within the body.

u do seafood better I think.

I saw Peter Kuruvita and tbh from my POV Lankan food seemed so much like Kerala cuisine even the Pot vessels.(Which btw is used in Chettinad cuisine too).

The first immigrants to the west especially UK have been sikhs and punjabis and the people there have gotten exposed to that cuisine whereas in malaysia and singapore etc it is very much tamil cuisine. In USa it is now south indian food. Majority of the restaurants now have mandatory southern cuisine. For an average Westerner there is no such thing as north/south it is just indian food.

Most overhyped dish of Punjab,i can't even swallow the saag, Paneer,Aloo,Brinjal in any Punjabi dish is brilliant though.

Only a true Punjabi can know the value of a well made Saag with desi ghee flowing through taken with makki do rotti with some adrak da achhar dripped in lemon.

I meant it is predominantly vegetarian only. I have never ever heard of any non veg stuff and their vegetarian food is BLah! They put sugar in their dal! Also they are very fanatic about their vegetarian food.

Yeah the fried snacks like khakra and bhakarvadi are good, even theplas are nice but everything else is wayy below par compared to other Indian cuisines.

Rajasthan has the worst cuisine. They should only stick to making namkeen.

The new Tibetian,Nepali fusion happening with Indian food is good too.

The tandoori momos!!Delhi in the area of food is doing a lot of fusion, people should always check out Delhi street food.

When did bakarvadi become gujrati? It is a maharashtrian snack.

I was wondering it as well. I ate it when I visited Pune and it was good. But was surprised when Jaded told it was Gujarati food.

On the topic of Gujarati food, how is it possible for an entire population to be vegetarian. Surely there must be some who must be non vegetarian and there must be a few meat dishes even if its rare or is it completely vegetarian?:srt

I used to go to this South Indian place. The vegie food was absolutely out of this world, I tried ordering some of the meat stuff but that wasn't so good.

I'm a big fan of pav bhaji dosa it goes well with mango lassi.

In Pune did u try Misal Pav and sabudana Kitchadi and kanda poha?? Also kacchi dabeli? Sabudana kitchadi used to be made in my hostel mess during fasting day and was given only to the girls who fasted for navrathi etc. So i used to lie and say i am hindu and fasting just so that i could get to eat it.

I had purchased a cook book few years ago which had recipes from all over india divided in zones. The gujrathi zone had a non vegetarian recipe and i was very shocked. But by and large the only communities i know in india who are completely into vegetarian food are gujrathis/marwaris/jains.

Lol no, I ate the normal naan, paneer butter masala, jeera rice and some dal dish to go with it. I know these are all generic but they are always great in the north. I also ate vada pav and bought some sweets (I was told they are famous in Pune) for my family.

Looks interesting. I'll try it maybe when I visit Maharashtra again.

DUH! Maharashtra isn't in north and the cuisine is not north indian. Did u visit chitale bandu sweet shop?

Try Kanda poha, Thalipeeth,Misal Pav, Kacchi Dabeli and my favourite Sabudana Kitchadi . Also for sweets try modak and puran poli(u may have this dish in tamil nadu with a different name though). Did u try Joshi Vada Pav??

Actually this is the first time time I'm hearing about this dish. Googled it and it is apparently a Mumbai street food. Gotta try it someday.

I'm sorry lol. Technically even Andhra is north to me as I'm in the southernmost part of India:inzi

I visited some good shop near the railway station (don't remember the name) but the bakarwadi and the sweets I bought was branded as "chitale bandu".

I just asked for normal vada pav, don't know which type was it. And yes, poli is popular in Tamil Nadu and is prepared with sweet potatoes or coconut (Rajini's personal favourite:narine).

I know modak, it's called modhakam in TN and is prepared during Ganesh chathurthi along with a similar jaggery dumpling dish called kozhukattai. I love it.

Try Perugu Pachadi. Its Andhra Special. One of the best dishes. You can add Tomatoes, Snake Gourd, Doodhi (Sorakaya) etc to curd with some spices and chillies. Mouth watering stuff.

Heard this thing and I was shocked.

My tamil colleague told me that they consider people of Andhra as Northies. He told me that Andhra culture is lot different from Tamil and people also look very different.

My Andhra friends consider Marathis as North Indians :))

I don't think there are much differences between Tamil and Telugu culture or appearances for that matter.

But generally the 4 southern states are called south and anything above is considered as north:inzi

Where are you from?

You are clearly see the diffference in people when u move from chennai to hyderabad. Or if u even compare the serials. For me Andhras are similar to Marathis and north indians in looks . Culturally too there is a lot of differences in all of south cities.

Vanakkam Sir. I am from Andhra Pradesh. Though the state has split, I still call it Andhra Pradesh.

Hyderabad will of course have more influences of north and Maharashtra as it is located relatively near to them and will also look different due to the Nizam and the Mughal influence.

But I have many telugu friends (afterall 30% of chennai is telugu) and visit their houses daily. I didn't find much differences tbh, probably because they were from southern parts of AP. Of course there are differences too but you find common ground in a lot too right from cuisine, culture, dressing, etc.

Susvaagatam!

AP is so used to us that it feels so different to call with new names. I call the state AP as well.

People in the districts in South of Andhra Pradesh close to Tamilnadu look pretty much the same as Tamils.

If I visit Tirupati, I feel like I am in Chennai. Lots of Tamil influence and it is the 2nd language there. The Telugu there has a lot of Tamil influence.

Yeah, I noticed the same as well. I literally visit it every year or two years and I saw many tamil film posters there and also many signboards in tamil as well.

Is it true that South Indians eat the healthiest food in India? :murali

Not really. Heavy rice consumption is rife in South India and couple that with sedentary life of desk job people, it is just an invitation to Diabetes.

The breakfast is healthy. Idly is one of the healthiest breakfasts you can have. Doctors suggest it for all Diabetic people.

Time to bump this thread.

For Fish lovers- the King fish and the Pomfret fry of Amma Hotel (Kozhikode, Kerala) is the best in the world.

Except that dosa, all other items are traditional central travancore kerala dishes which were served to paddy field workers.

Mom makes this Casava and fish curry/beef curry at home but this looks yummy.

Yep, too good to be true. It’s one of my food cravings during pregnancy. I can guarantee that you will definitely like it if you are into spicy foods.:81:
They use too much oil so I will try it with alcohol :D What's your opinion about paragon restaurant which serves Italian and continental dishes.

Owner of chayakada. I think he is a kudiyetta karshakan

The shop’s name is Chandrettante Chaayakkada. He is a native to that place.

And that’s not a dosa, it’s kai Pathiri, common in my village too.
