What's new

Does Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk ignore the role of the Indian army?

By whom lol?

By outsiders who stereotyped Indians as folks riding on elelphants and worshipping cows. Basically by people too lazy to get into the intricacies of India
Sloggy I ain't got the time for the likes of you if you are looking just to troll and throw in not so funny one liners.Like I said earlier back up your statement with historical proof and if you can't then pls stop wasting my time.Good night.

Sorry to know about your grandfather and there were probably many people from SC that were involved in the wars that was no theirs.
Wars are like that only.My ancestors have been fighting someone else's wars for at least a millennium. That's the nature of these conflicts. It's nothing new.

Films aren't meant to be historical documentaries.

But for heaven's sake, another film about WW2 ? Its become a national obsession to retread the events of 1940, the plucky heroism of Dunkirk and how we stood alone to best the Nazis.

There's too many films glorifying war, especially WW2, when we should tell our children about the appalling human costs of WW2 and how future generations should never repeat the same mistakes.

In the meantime, Germany and Japan who were decimated by the war went about rebuilding their society and their industry and have achieved greater economic prosperity than we have.

Tbh it hardly glorifies he British

In fact in the end there is sort of a plea to America to come and save the day which is what happened so credit is being given

How does it glorify war Markhor? It seems to me to do quite the opposite.

Its ending message where it quotes the evil and racist churchill that we will fight on the beaches, and the streets and so on, with the zimmer music making it sound like words of a prophet. If that is not glorifying war then what is?

the historical proof is that you have to go back 3000 years or so (asides from British colonization and conversion of India into one unit for administrative purposes) to see when the last time 'India' was one entity as you claim it

Once again you are talking of a political entity similar to modern nation states.Read my original post again and this time with glasses on or stop wasting my time.Good day.

I do not need glasses but you certainly need to work on your comprehension skills. Good day to you too!

Markhor you need to watch the movie mate, Robert is right it's in fact the complete opposite. There is no glorification of death or destruction or any chest pumping etc. Also, our children do learn about the appalling human costs of WW2; my younger brother has been learning about it currently in his History lessons at school. Such movies can be an education as well and good learning tool when done right.

Have you see the film?

Which other films glorify WW2?

The brown people who served get little attention for their efforts with regards to the Empire, I know there are some white people who are high and mighty when it comes to the oh would 1 brown person have made a difference; well hell yeah more then 1 made a difference to the outcome of the war so show some god damn respect you hypocritical / entitled racists who do not stop when it comes to your glorification of the white effort in WWII.

Come off it mate. We are talking about a film not real life, and it's the white people who make these films and a great job they do of it as well. There's nothing to stop brown people making films to tell their story of heroism in WWII and putting it on film. But more likely they'll be sitting on their bottoms in cinema halls from Mumbai to Delhi watching Nolan's film while munching samosas and kulfi.

More than 300,000 people around the world are stuck in cinemas. Can they be saved or will they die of boredom?!

Turns out that Paddy Ashdown's father was there, and got a hundred Indians out in defiance of orders. He faced a court martial for that, but the case collapsed.

On the movie itself, I loved Interstellar - not so much Dunkirk.

There seemed to be no clear start, climax or end.

Anybody else feel the same?

It was a rallying call to resist the worst regime in history, which was about to invade and enslave. Say what you like about Churchill. His spirit and leadership kept the lamp of European democracy lit.

I don't like calling churchill out for what he was. I am from Bengal, and the only two difference between him and hitler was that he didnt use gas chambers and didn't end up on the losing side. I wish I was a british so that I could only think about him as a savior and not a an oppressor.

Hitler carried out a policy of deliberate extermination. Churchill didn't. Neither did he call up a typhoon and a fungal blight. Really not sure what he could have done to alleviate the famine. If those two thumping big battleships he sent were sunk, what chance would a relief convoy have had?

The way I read it, the Raj administrators of the other regions panicked and hoarded their own food reserves, pulled up the rope ladder on the Bengalis.

By the way, had Britain lost the war and the Imperial Japanese got into Bengal, then you would have seen deliberate extermination.

No, they would not have. They were friends of India and even spared the lives of the british indian soldiers who agrees to join the Indian National Army. The imperial japanese are shown as a monster to hide the evil actions of the allies and to make the dropping of nuclear bombs as instrumental to world peace.

If there is a famine in bengal why hasn't gandhi died? The indians are a beastly people with beastly religion.

They are shown as monsters because they enslaved the Manchurians, Koreans, Inochines and Siamese, set up a mass rape system and committed industrial scale human vivisection. But the Indians would have been spared by this most xenophobic of regimes. Riiiiiiiiiit.

You've avoided answering my question. What could Churchill have done to alleviate the Famine when the U-boats were sinking so many ships that he could barely feed the Britons?

Because that is the wrong question. The question is whether churchill even wanted to help during the famine? Please answer that.

As you don't care what churchill did as long as he saved democracy in eurupe, I don't care what the japanese did as long as they spared the indians who joined our fuhrer subhash chandra bose.

I don't care if you answer or not. My issue is with the racist and abominable churchill, not so much with his admirers.

History is written by the victors. Unless Nolan has painted Churchill as racist or abominable, your public will be getting the same history lesson as everyone else when they sit down to watch this blockbuster release in theatres throughout India.

I know it is sad that most indians side with the usa and uk, two nations guilty of most crimes against humanity and are against muslims and china. when it should have been the opposite. so as a minority indian i can only wait for and enjoy schadenfreude.

There's a Youtube video knocking around about India dominating the world by 2050, come back then and schadenfreude the hell out of PP. If Rob's still around he'll be shaking so hard with rage his zimmer frame will be rattling off the ground.

You didn't get me. I get my schadenfreude when I read about british troops getting their due in afghanistan and iraq.

I don't think there's many Brtish troops in Afghanistan or Iraq any more. Most of them were replaced by locals on the ground with varying degrees of success. Brits just supply the air cover, a lot less casualties that way.

The less body bags sent to UK the better for them. Hope the meaning of schadenfreude is clear to you now.
