Dream 11 as IPL 2020 title sponsor, Unacademy as official partner for 3 years [Update Post#250]

If Amazon is in the running, then game over. Why is anyone else even there? Amazon has plenty of $$$ to outbid others.

Education technology company Unacademy, which is already one of IPL’s sponsors, is eyeing the league’s title sponsorship rights now and is set to submit its bid to replace Chinese mobile phone company Vivo this season. A BCCI official confirmed that Unacademy has picked up the bid papers but refrained from making any comments beyond that.

“I can confirm that Unacademy has shown interest and picked the bid papers. I have heard they will be submitting a bid and are pretty serious. So Patanjali if they bid, will have competition,” the senior official told PTI on conditions of anonymity. Vivo, which annually paid Rs 440 crore, dropped out as title sponsor this year due to the Sino-India border stand-off.

IPL 2020 Full coverage

The BCCI is now looking at a lesser value -- between Rs 300 to 350 crore -- for a period of four months and 13 days. The official said Unacademy is a part of IPL’s central sponsorship pool with other companies like Dream11 and Paytm. “Yes, Unacademy is already in IPL’s central sponsors’ pool from 2020 to 2023,” the BCCI official said.

Asked what’s the difference between central sponsorship and title sponsorship, the official explained, “The central sponsorship doesn’t include jersey rights.”

“In IPL, jersey logo can only be of title sponsor and apart from that various team’s sponsors. If they become title sponsors, it will give them rights on various branding properties,” he said. Asked about the specifics, he said: “The prominent space in the backdrop board in the post presentation area, backdrop in dug out, and boundary rope. A lot of these branding opportunities apart from digital and media opportunities are part of partnership,” the senior official said.

While no one from Unacademy was prepared to speak on the issue, an industry insider, who is privy to the Edu-tech company’s preparations to file a bid, said the firm is ready take the big plunge. “Unlike some of the other Edu-Tech apps, Unacademy has 100 per cent Indian investment. And four and half months is the perfect time to get associated with a brand like IPL and broaden their horizons in terms of brand outreach,” the source close to the development said.

Patanjali is a multi billion dollar enterprise. It has eaten into market share of foreign fmcg players in India.
Just because a name is in Hindi Does not make the brand less prestigious.

This will surely test the loyalty of BCCI and over enthusiastic IPL fans towards India. In the past also BCCI has proven that they think about India first and then their pockets. Boycotting Pakistan in bilaterals is a prime example of that.

Will BCCI take a hit on their bank accounts this time because lots of chinese companies are sponsoring them? I am sure and hopeful just like they didn't let Pakistan make profits by not playing against them, they also won't let these Chinese companies make profit through Indian Cricket and IPL. :inti

Viru bhai looks like other sponsors are lining up and hit will not be that much given the COVID situation. Your thoughts?

It was VIVO who pulled out not BCCI. :inti

In the end, this will turn out to be a win win situation for BCCI and Indian cricket..Vivo exit earns some goodwill from public and there is no financial impact with an Indian company coming forward to sponsor...slap on the face for those posting against BCCI and IPL.

No need for slap and all mate. Everyone has different view points and we should respect that.

Its funny that PayTM that is part of IPL's sponsor pool has major shareholding of Ali Baba group. So, that so called "goodwill" with the indian public should go down the drain.

Another hypocrite who is happy with Indian govt banning everything chinese but getting super excited for VIVO earning some goodwill from indian public lol. As I said earlier the whole situation showed that BCCI has no self respect. They should have cancelled the deal before VIVO did. :inti

PayTMs majority share holders thats 51 percent or more are non chinese entity. Ali baba is an investor in paytm and has a minoriy of board seats.

PayTM is registered in India. It works according to Indian laws, its founder and chairman is Indian, majority of board of directors are Indian.

Investment in a company doesn't make it a Chinese company or a chinese controlled company.

IPL 2020 Title Sponsorship: Tata Group Emerges Strong Contenders; Dream11, Byju's In Contention Too

A late and surprising entrant, the Tata Group, which has never majorly been into cricket sponsorship, may run away with the title sponsorship of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, which will be held in the United Arab Emirates from September 19 to November 10. (More Cricket News)

According to sources, the Tata Group is among four companies who have expressed their interest to bid for the IPL 2020 title sponsorship. The others are education technology platform Unacademy, fantasy cricket online app Dream11 and online tutoring firm Byju's.

According to rules, the four companies will have to submit their formal bid by 1 PM on August 18 following which the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will announce the title sponsors later in the day.

Money may not be the only consideration although the BCCI will look to recover as much of the INR 440 crores it has lost after a hassled Vivo, the Chinese mobile phone makers, "mutually" pulled out this year in the wake of the bitter 'Boycott China' mood generated after 20 Indian soldiers were killed by China in a bloody standoff in Ladakh in June this year.

Of the four contenders, Tatas and Unacademy are purely desi (Indian) brands while both Dream11 and Byju's have Chinese investors. Dream11 is apparently being funded by a telecommunication giant.

Dream11 and Byju's are already associated with BCCI as sponsors. The fantasy cricket platform is also associated with several IPL franchises. Byju's replaced Oppo (another Chinese mobile phone brand) as Team India sponsors while Unacademy have just become one of the official partners of IPL.

Sources say the 'deal' with the Tata Group has been struck. The title sponsorship fee is expected to be around INR 300 crores.

The Tata Group's association with sports has been long. Outside the Railways and other institutional public sector units, the Tata Group has been the largest employers of sportspersons in India. The current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and head coach Ravi Shastri have been Tata employees.

Tata sponsors the biggest international tennis tournament -- Maharashtra Open -- in India, funds the Wrestling Federation of India, has a team in the India Super League football and runs one of the oldest soccer academies in the country in Jamshedpur. It continues to employ top Olympians.

The Tata group's reputation as a national brand with pedigree will be a major factor when the BCCI makes the final call on August 18, said a source in the know of things.

The 'China' factor will work against Byju's and Dream11. "It will be suicidal if BCCI continues to promote these brands," the source said.

Pls tell me why did Vivo exit the deal..who forced it ...Ultimately Vivo is the loser here..they needed access to Indian market and now they are losing it..BCCI and IPL are the winners here..

According to InsideSport, Tata Sons, Reliance Jio, Byju's, Patanjali and Unacademy have submitted Expression Of Interest. The final announcement on IPL Title Sponsorship will be made on 18th August by the BCCI.

Dream11 have also picked up the bidding documents for the title sponsorship of IPL 2020. Tata Sons have also shown interest in bidding.

After Vivo’s exit as title sponsors from the upcoming edition of IPL, the Indian cricket board has received expression of interest from at least five companies to step in for the UAE edition, from September 19 to November 8.

It is learnt Tata group, Reliance Jio, Patanjali, and edu tech platforms Byjus and Unacademy have met Friday’s deadline for submitting Expression Of Interest (EOI). It could not be independently confirmed but leading fantasy gaming platform, Dream 11, could also be in the running. A Tata spokesperson confirmed “Tata group have expressed interest in IPL title rights”.

Industry experts say it is highly unlikely all those who have shown interest will submit bids on August 18, when the sponsors will be announced. “Tata group is a serious player. It may want to make the most of this rare opportunity when IPL is scheduled in a festive season and sponsorship is available just for a year, and at a discount,” said a source close to the development.

At the time of inviting title sponsors last week, a BCCI official had said “the discount could be as much 30-40 % of the R440 crore Vivo would have paid”.

Among the other prospective sponsors, Reliance Jio is already a sponsor with many franchises and a leading advertiser during IPL. “They are not short of cash, but there is no indication they would be bidding aggressively,” said a senior industry executive.

Byjus is already paying big bucks as the Indian team’s jersey sponsor. It will have to take a call if it wants to join the IPL bandwagon as well. Interestingly, it became known on Friday that it has dropped out as principal sponsor of Kolkata Knight Riders.

With the prevailing anti-China sentiment that led to Vivo stepping aside this season, an Indian company may be a perfect fit for BCCI. A clause in the EOI invitation also indicates BCCI is addressing wider issues.

“BCCI shall not be obliged to award the rights to the third party which indicates willingness to pay the highest fees in the course of discussions/negotiations with BCCI after submitting an EOI. BCCI’s decision in this regard will also depend on a number of other relevant factors, including but not limited to, the manner in which the third party intends to exploit the rights and the potential impact of the same on brand IPL.

In BCCI’s invite for EOI last week, it said only companies with a minimum turnover of R300 crore, as per the latest audit, will be eligible to bid for title sponsorship.

Patanjali and Unacademy are domestic companies that have shown interest in cricket sponsorship. Whether they will want to go all out in clinching the bid remains to be seen.

Other than the title sponsorship, BCCI is also in negotiations to fill three associate partnership slots to try and make up for some of the financial shortfalls due to Vivo’s exit. Tata’s Altroz is already an IPL official partner. If Unacademy does not win the title sponsorship, it too could join as a new official partner.

Though I am not too familiar with the situation, I don't think Vivo exited the deal. They suspended it for one season because of the Ind-China tension. I believe they pick it back up next season. So this new sponsors are for one season only.

Indian Premier League side Rajasthan Royals have become the first major cricket team to be sponsored by a sanitary towel company.

The Royals, winners of the first IPL in 2008, include Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer in their ranks.

They will display the logo of Indian hygiene and personal care company Niine on the back of the team's jersey.

"It's time to make a real change," Royals executive chairman Ranjit Barthakur said.

Niine founder Amar Tulsiyan added: "Rajasthan Royals are known for their affinity with social causes, and share a common vision of empowering women to strengthen India further."

This year's IPL will take place in the United Arab Emirates from 19 September to 10 November.

IPL title sponsor: Dream 11 replaces Vivo as IPL 2020 title sponsor, to pay BCCI Rs 222 crore

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced Dream 11 as the new title sponsor for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The move comes after the Indian board recently suspended its title sponsorship deal with Vivo - the Chinese mobile manufacturer, that had signed a deal in 2018 for 5 years. While the BCCI received Rs 440 crore from Vivo, Dream XI will pay BCCI 222 crore for the upcoming edition - which will be played in the UAE from September 19 to November 10.

Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Brijesh Patel confirmed that Dream 11 will pay BCCI Rs 222 crore. Sources told timesnownews.com that Dream 11 came up with the highest bid followed by Unacademy and Byju’s. The challenge for the BCCI was to find a new sponsor with not much time left for the 13th edition. However, given the popularity of IPL, many brands were keen and showed interest in replacing Vivo as the title sponsor. Since the title sponsorship deal for the 2020 season will be for a period of fewer than 5 months, the BCCI had to seal a deal which was close to 50% of what it received from Vivo.

The deal also comes as a big blow for all eight franchises as the Indian board shares 50% of the total amount it receives among all eight franchises. In IPL 2019, while all eight franchises received Rs 55 crore each, the franchises will have to settle for an amount of Rs 27.75 crore apiece for the upcoming season.

My rough Google conversion says $30 million. That is a very good number considering the current pandemic and the fact that it is only for 4 months.

Yeah its pretty good in the scheme of things as Vivo backed out at much pretty much the last moment. Its still more than twice what they used to pay up till 2017, which is not bad considering the current climate

A hit of 50% - small hit LOL

and adding injury to wounds - its funded heavily by Tencent - a Chinese company :yk

$30mn for 4.5 months.

Heavily funded? Lol. Its one of many investors in the company.

Hahaha this is hilarious.

Boycott China drama results in BCCI losing more than half of their earnings this year replace Chinese mobile phone manufacturer with Chinese video game company. Tencent has majority stake in dream11. Its founder Jain own stake is 35%.

In the end Chinese will still earn money while bcci and franchise lose just to satisfy someone's political ego. Pure comedy going on, hope Boycott China campaigners don't stay silent and force bcci to find local Indian investors like Adani or Ambani the way they glorify them.

The usual shills trying to justify that this is a great outcome for the BCCI and that the new sponsor isn't a de facto Chinese company, no sirree. I do hope these loons get paid well to help them sleep at night.

IPL tournament sponsors (sponsorship fee per year)

DLF (2008-12) - 40 cr
Pepsi (2013-15) - 79.2 cr
Vivo (2016-17) - ~100 cr
Vivo (2018-19) - 439.8 cr
Dream X1 (2020- Just for 4 month) - 222 cr

very good deal.

222 Cr for just 5 months of sponsorship is noice tbh...

$30mn for 4.5 months.

Heavily funded? Lol. Its one of many investors in the company.

How does month matter when it is for one series (IPL)? IPL only occurs once a year

Having said that, it's a great deal considering the pandemic situation, and on such short notice.

Looking forward to the Tencent IPL yo!

Big loss but it's ok,only ipl has the brand value to get a sponsor in this season.

We just saw how some international teams were struggling to find a sponsor :inti.

Tencent holds 20% stake in the company.

I dont blame the indians - Chinese companies are rich and cannot be ignored, simply, no matter how much of a jingo you are. :ronaldo

222 crores is very good for a Covid time period. Beauty of nationalism, the parties must have decided to pump more money in given the IPL. If there are chinese investors on board what happened to the nationalism, principles of the BCCI and the stakeholders now? Is there an unwritten rule that you will turn the other way when money is involved?

Ofcourse most of the IPL fans only care about money and are less concerned about the sports. These are the same guys who will never look back at India if given an opportunity to settle abroad. I am pretty sure these guys wanted IPL to happen badly only because they wanted to show off in front of Pakistanis here. :inti

On the other hand, for Tencent, this is in line with the company’s plans to invest up to US$200 million in gaming ventures in India in this year. The report also claims that the company’s gaming division, Tencent Gaming is the largest gaming company in the world. As far as its India investments are concerned, Tencent led a $115-million investment in music streaming service Gaana in February. Prior to that, it led in funding Flipkart and Ola. Tencent also owns stakes in messaging application Hike, healthcare startup Practo and education technology firm Byju’s. So far, it has invested $1.3 billion in India.

Tencent has majority stake? Really? Can you provide a source?

Tencent has less than 10 per cent stake.

If a chinese firm has less than 10 percent stake it hardly matters.

Dream11, India’s only gaming unicorn, is valued above $1 billion. The current management including promoters and ESOPs own 35-40 percent. Kalaari Capital, Multiples and Think Investments own approximately around 40 percent and Tencent owns less than 10 percent. The balance is held by many investors in small stakes.

It's good to see a different sponsor(thankfully not Patanjali).. also they get an opportunity to keep it incase Vivo pulls out.

Tencent is a gaming giant(in investments) and actually one of the innovative funding companies of China imo,as I have been corrected already Chinese business are needed in India..but we should still be careful with our data(esp personal) being on their servers.

Expect another Rs 80cr from two more new sponsors soon. That will take it to 300 crore plus for the season.

Tata was very interested but for them to bid on the higher side they demanded three different sponsor branding names for three of their companies. Bcci was not willing.

But the other percent would be for Indians? In that logic of yours they are also paying 10% of IPL money..

They have invested in other businesses also. Read this

It servers no purpose to Tata to be on this..also if BCCI is anyhow allowing two more sponsors then why couldn't they just let Tata have 3?

I have already praised Tencent's vision in above post.

Well Tata has various consumer brands to advertise. But they wanted different branding for different places. Like one for the title. One for the branding used on jersey etc.

These other two companies will join as associate sponsors.

Rich Chinese basically have ownership in every major Indian company. :)
Cant escape it, even if they want to. Chinese have too much money.

This year's IPL will probably break all viewership record considering how much starved Indian public is for any cricket. Test matches in Eng had unexpectedly very high Indian viewership. Even CPL which started today attracted lots of viewers. Then imagine what IPL will do.

Brace for an impact...IPL 2020 might be the highest viewed cricket series ever and has potential to break all records.

Will this IPL break World Cup viewership records?

I know recently the ECB/Sky broke viewership records of some sort for the Eng vs. WI serires.

Lol, its clear that the BCCI had no issues with Vivo, it was Vivo who chose to exit. Where money is involved, all the talk of nationalism and solidarity with our troops goes out of the window

So they've gone from "supporting our brave jawans on the border" to "meh, who cares let the cash flood in"

So much for nationalism lol.
Nationalism tabhi yaad ata hai jab Pakistan ya Imran Khan ki statement aaye :))

If Vivo had chosen to exit, they would have been liable to pay the entire amount. It was a mutually agreed dissociation.

Correct me if I am wrong. My understanding of this whole situation is that Vivo just hit the pause button for this edition because of the negativity surrounding China. They did not exit or void the contract. The IPL has also agreed for the same.

They regain their official sponsorship title when they hit play in 4-5 months time. The contract will be extended by a season on the back end to complete the 5 year deal.

Traders' body CAIT on Wednesday wrote to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) raising objections over the Indian Premier League's title sponsor reportedly having stakeholders from China. In a letter to BCCI President Saurav Ganguly, Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) said: "We are deeply pained to note that now Dream 11 has been chosen as sponsor of IPL 2020 which has Chinese company Tencent Global as one of the major stakeholders".

"We are of the considered opinion that awarding sponsorship to Dream 11 is nothing but a bye pass route to neglect the sentiments and feelings prevailing among the people of India against China for its regular attempts to invade the interests of India," said CAIT, which is spearheading the campaign to boycott Chinese goods.

Fantasy gaming platform Dream11 on Tuesday won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title sponsorship rights with a bid of Rs 222 crore, replacing Chinese mobile phone company Vivo for a four and a half month deal.

Dream11 has been one of the IPL sponsors for a couple of years now. Vivo and the BCCI suspended a Rs 440 crore-per-year deal for this season owing to the border stand-off between India and China.

The IPL, moved out of India due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year, starts on September 19 in the UAE.

There are certain questions about Chinese company Tencent's investment in Dream11, but one of the BCCI insiders privy to the development said that it is less than 10 per cent.

Dream11 is an Indian company founded by Harsh Jain and Bhavit Sheth.

Not the one BCCI initiated, in fact Vivo told the BCCI that they were not sponsoring the IPL this season therefore leaving BCCI with no choice but to accept their withdrawal.

Not the one BCCI initiated, in fact Vivo told the BCCI that they were not sponsoring the IPL this season therefore leaving BCCI with no choice but to accept their withdrawal.

If this is the case, then it's poor on the IPL to have a contract that has no legal consequences. They need to structure their contracts better.

So they've gone from "supporting our brave jawans on the border" to "meh, who cares let the cash flood in"

So much for nationalism lol.
Nationalism tabhi yaad ata hai jab Pakistan ya Imran Khan ki statement aaye :))

That is true and this is the point I raised many times here but they ran away :inti
