At least 10 people have been killed and 35 others injured after a driver crashed his pickup truck into a crowd at high speed in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

On Wednesday, officials in the United States city described the car-ramming as a deliberate attack.

“This man was trying to run over as many people as he could,” New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick told reporters on Wednesday. “He was hellbent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did.”

Kirkpatrick added that the situation was not considered an instance of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, known as a DUI.

“ It was very intentional behaviour,” Kirkpatrick said. “It was not a DUI situation. This is more complex and more serious based on the information we have right now.”

The incident occurred around 3:15am (09:15 GMT) near the intersection of Canal and Bourbon streets, a busy pedestrian thoroughfare in the heart of New Orleans’s historic French Quarter.

The New Orleans Police Department explained in a statement that the car struck multiple pedestrians before crashing.

“After the vehicle came to a stop, the suspect reportedly opened fire on responding officers, who returned fire,” the police statement said. “The victim was struck and subsequently declared deceased on scene.”

Videos shared online and verified by Al Jazeera show people fleeing the scene of the incident after gunshots rang out.

Kirkpatrick said the driver shot two police officers, but they were in “stable” condition.

RIP to the deceased one, and hope the injured recovers soon!

RIP to the dead. I hope the motive behind the attack is disclosed soon. Lone wolf or part of a group of brainwashed Zombies.
I was in that Bourbon street area almost 20 years ago. Still looks the same in the pictures.

FBI official Alethea Duncan confirms the suspected attacker was an Army veteran, saying officials believe he was on discharge but cannot currently confirm this.

Investigators have identified Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42, as the suspect who intentionally rammed his vehicle into New Orleans revelers early on New Year's Day.

Investigators do not believe Jabbar was “solely responsible” for the attack and have asked for the public’s assistance.

veteran, Muslim, texan, us born and bred will be interesting which groups try to disown him first. from what little is known of him, looks like his life spiralled out of control, divorce, debt, possible foreclosure. the right mix of weapons, religion, self radicalisation, and boom.

Converted and then brainwashed into Us vs Them stuff. Hopefully the truth comes out soon. No one just drives truck into random group of people just like that.

Let the truth come out first. You have already started playing the victim card.

Muslims are allowed to be everything but victims.

But, neither me nor anyone who isn’t involved in this attack is a victim.

At least 15 killed in New Orleans truck attack linked to ISIL

At least 15 people have been killed and dozens more injured in New Orleans, the United States, after a man smashed a pick-up truck into New Year’s revellers in an attack that authorities have linked to ISIL (ISIS).

US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that the FBI had informed him that the suspect had posted videos on social media indicating that he was inspired by the Middle East-based armed group.

“To all the people in New Orleans who are grieving, I grieve with you,” President Biden said in remarks from the presidential retreat at Camp David.

“Our nation grieves with you.”

Biden also said authorities were investigating any possible links to the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside a hotel belonging to US President-elect Donald Trump in Las Vegas on Wednesday, but there was so far “nothing to report on that score.”

The FBI said earlier on Wednesday that it did not believe that the suspect, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, had acted alone and that authorities had found an ISIL flag on his truck’s trailer hitch.

“The FBI is working to determine the subject’s potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organisations,” Alethea Duncan, the assistant special agent in charge of the New Orleans FBI, told reporters.

“We do not believe that Jabbar was solely responsible,” Duncan said. “We are aggressively running down every lead, including those of his known associates.”

Duncan said potential improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, were located in the city’s French Quarter and had been rendered safe.

Wednesday’s attack occurred at about 3:15am (09:15 GMT) near the intersection of Canal and Bourbon streets, a busy pedestrian thoroughfare in the heart of New Orleans’s historic French Quarter.

The New Orleans Police Department said that the suspect’s car struck multiple pedestrians before crashing.

Jabbar, a US citizen and army veteran, was shot dead by police after opening fire on responding officers, authorities said.

Videos shared online and verified by Al Jazeera show people fleeing the scene of the incident after gunshots rang out.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said that the suspect had been trying to run over “as many people as he could”.

“He was hellbent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did,” Kirkpatrick told reporters.

Kirkpatrick said the suspect injured two police officers during the gunfire exchange, but they were in “stable” condition.

Questions of motive

The incident came as late-night New Year’s celebrations continued on Bourbon Street, a popular destination for partygoers, packed with bars and venues for music and dancing.

It also happened hours before the planned kickoff of the Allstate Sugar Bowl, a college football quarterfinal held in the city’s Caesars Superdome, with thousands expected to be in attendance. The game was subsequently postponed for 24 hours following the attack.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell described the incident as a “terrorist attack”. She said local officials have been collaborating with state and local authorities, and that her priority was ensuring the safety of the victims.

“We do know the city of New Orleans was impacted by a terrorist attack,” Cantrell said in a predawn news conference. “It’s all still under investigation.”

Law enforcement had initially appeared wary of designating the event as a “terrorist” attack. Special Agent Duncan had said earlier in the day: “This is not a terrorist event.”

By late Wednesday, however, the FBI announced it had expanded its investigation to Houston, Texas, where the suspect had family ties.

Reporting from Washington, DC, Al Jazeera correspondent Rosiland Jordan noted that, while the FBI is treating the incident as an act of terrorism, the bureau has yet to reveal the full extent of its evidence.

“ Motive is the big question,” Jordan explained. “They don’t know whether this person had any ulterior motives. They don’t know if this person had any assistance.  They don’t know, if indeed this had been planned, how long this incident had been in the planning.”

She noted that there had been a heightened police presence in New Orleans for the New Year’s festivities, as well as to provide security for the Sugar Bowl football game.

But some of the barriers that ordinarily would have been in place to prevent a car-ramming had been removed at the time of Wednesday’s attack, according to local media reports.

The city had been in the process of replacing bollards – poles designed to impede traffic – in advance of the Super Bowl LIX game, the pinnacle of the American football season, set to be held in New Orleans in February.

However, it is unclear whether the barriers were a factor in Wednesday’s incident, with some witnesses reporting seeing the truck drive around them.

Kirkpatrick appeared to confirm that account in a news conference.

“This particular terrorist drove around, onto the sidewalk, and got around the hard target, where we did have a car there, we had barriers there, we had officers there. And they still got around,” she said.

Officials react

Early on Wednesday, the White House indicated that President Biden had been briefed on the situation and spoken with Mayor Cantrell in the hours since the fatal attack.

Later, Biden himself issued a statement through the White House.

“My heart goes out to the victims and their families who were simply trying to celebrate the holiday,” he said. “There is no justification for violence of any kind, and we will not tolerate any attack on any of our nation’s communities.”

He credited the “swift response of local law enforcement” with preventing further death and injury.

Another member of the Biden administration, Attorney General Merrick Garland, called the car-ramming a “terrible tragedy”.

“My heart is broken for those who began their year by learning people they love were killed in this horrific attack,” Garland, the top law enforcement officer in the federal government, wrote in a statement.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas also encouraged “the public to be vigilant” in the aftermath of the attack.

Meanwhile, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry urged people to stay away from the Bourbon Street area, as the investigation continues. Multiple blocks were cordoned off after the car-ramming.

“A horrific act of violence took place on Bourbon Street earlier this morning,” Landry wrote on the social media platform X, adding that he was “praying for all the victims and first responders on the scene”.

Trump likewise offered condolences in the aftermath of the attack, calling it an “act of pure evil”.

But in a social media post, he used the attack to underscore one of the primary pillars of his political agenda: limiting immigration into the US.

Trump implied immigrants were involved in the attack, though the FBI later identified the suspect as a US citizen.

“When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media,” Trump wrote.

“Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department.”

Al Jazeera correspondent Kimberly Halkett said Wednesday’s social media post echoes the anti-immigration message Trump championed on the campaign trail.

“ This is consistent with President Trump’s ongoing theme that he wants to limit immigration into the United States, particularly those that he believes are undocumented,” Halkett said.

A Republican who previously served as president from 2017 to 2021, Trump won a second term in the White House during November’s general elections and is slated to return to office on January 20.

Tourism an economic lifeline

Jordan also noted that the car-ramming happened at a pivotal time for New Orleans, a city whose economy relies on tourism.

Parades for the Christian holiday of Mardi Gras draw crowds from around the world, as does the city’s jazz scene.

“This is a very, very significant incident. It comes just as New Orleans is entering its peak tourism season, about two months before Mardi Gras and the start of the Christian Lent period, before Easter,” Jordan said.

An estimated 43 million tourists visit Louisiana every year, according to state statistics. In 2023 alone, visitors spent a total of $18.1bn and generated $1.9bn in state and local taxes.

“Anything that might have a negative impact on what local businesses are counting on – which is bringing in thousands and thousands of people for tourism – could hurt the New Orleans economy,” Jordan explained.

The National Football League (NFL) has expressed its support for the Louisiana city, saying it would proceed with planning its Super Bowl championship game there. It added that it had collaborated with state, local and federal officials for two years to ensure “comprehensive security plans” for February’s game.

“We are confident attendees will have a safe and enjoyable Super Bowl experience,” the NFL said in a statement.

In the lead-up to the postponed Sugar Bowl game, the Superdome stadium also underwent extensive security sweeps. Governor Landry told reporters he would be in attendance to show support.

The New Year’s Day car-ramming incident is not the first time New Orleans has weathered tragedy during its famed celebrations.

This past November, for instance, two people were killed and 10 others injured in two separate shootings during a “second line”, a traditional New Orleans parade known for brass bands and dancing.

In February 2017, police said a man who appeared highly intoxicated ploughed his pick-up truck into a crowd of spectators watching the main Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans, injuring more than 20 people.

New Orleans has struggled with a high homicide rate in recent years, with some media outlets dubbing it the “murder capital of the United States”. But officials have touted a decline in violent crime.

In December, New Orleans police officials noted that crime overall in the city had slumped 26 percent in 2024, compared with the previous year. Murders had likewise dropped 35 percent.

“New Orleans police have proven their ability to make this city safer.  Just two years ago, we were the murder capital of America. Today, from that time two years ago, we have driven our murder rate more than 50 percent down,” Superintendent Kirkpatrick said.

“But this is different. Because it’s terrorism.”

Police are investigating after a Tesla Cybertruck filled with fuel canisters and firework mortars exploded outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The driver was killed and seven people were injured, police said without naming any of the individuals involved. Officials said all injuries were minor.

The truck was rented in Colorado and arrived in the city Wednesday morning, less than two hours before the detonation, police said. Parked in front of the hotel near a glass entrance, the vehicle started to smoke, then exploded.

In an evening address, President Joe Biden said the White House was tracking the incident and law enforcement was investigating "whether there's any possible connection with the attack in New Orleans", which left 15 dead early on New Year's Day.

In an afternoon press conference, Sheriff Kevin McMahill showed dramatic footage of the explosion and photos of the aftermath, including several fuel canisters along with large fireworks in the truck bed.

Footage showed the truck parked directly in front of the entrance of the hotel. The truck sits idle for several seconds before exploding - bursts of multi-coloured fireworks shooting in multiple directions.

Another video showed investigators using a black fire-retardant tarp to put out the blaze and the charred remains of the truck bed. An array of gas and fuel canisters were left behind along with the remnants of more than a dozen firework mortars.

The fire occurred around 08:40 PT (15:40 GMT), just hours after a man drove a truck with an Islamic State (IS) group flag into the crowd in New Orleans. At least 15 people died and dozens were injured.

Mr McMahill of the Las Vegas Police Department said the authorities were examining whether the incident could be connected to the one in New Orleans, where improvised explosive devices were found near the scene.

He said they were also investigating whether it might be linked to President-Elect Donald Trump, who owns the hotel, or Elon Musk, who owns Tesla.

"Obviously, a Cybertruck, the Trump Hotel, there's lots of questions that we have to answer as we move forward," he said.

The FBI also said the agency was looking into whether the incident might be an act of terrorism, but the authorities said they currently had not confirmed the identity of the driver, who died in the vehicle. Authorities also said thus far, they had found no evidence that this incident was related to IS.

"I know everybody's interested in that word, and trying to see if we can say, 'Hey, this is a terrorist attack.' That is our goal, and that's what we're trying to do," FBI special agent in charge Jeremy Schwartz told reporters at a news conference.

The sheriff noted that both vehicles appeared to be rented from Turo, an app-based car rental company.

A Turo spokesperson said in a statement that the company was working with authorities in Las Vegas and New Orleans to help with the investigation. The spokesperson noted both renters appeared to not have a criminal background that would have "identified them as a security threat".

"We are heartbroken by the violence perpetrated in New Orleans and Las Vegas, and our prayers are with the victims and families," the statement reads.

The authorities say they do have the name of the person who rented the vehicle but have not officially confirmed it was the person driving the vehicle.

"As you can imagine, with an explosion here on an iconic Las Vegas Boulevard, we are taking all of the precautions that we need to take to keep our community safe," he said during a news conference.

Mr McMahill said there was no longer a threat to the Las Vegas community.

"We're tracking the explosion of a Cybertruck outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas," said the president in an evening address.

"Law enforcement and the intelligence community are investigating this as well, including whether there's any possible connection with the attack in New Orleans."

Fire department officials said emergency responders had quickly worked to extinguish the vehicle fire.

They added that the public should stay away from the area. The hotel was evacuated, with most of the guests moving to a different location.

It is owned in part by President-elect Donald Trump's company. In a post on X, Trump's son, Eric Trump, said a "reported electric vehicle fire occurred in the porte cochère of Trump Las Vegas".

"The safety and well-being of our guests and staff remain our top priority. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Las Vegas Fire Department and local law enforcement for their swift response and professionalism," he said.

Stephen Ferlando told the Washington Post that he had witnessed the incident from his hotel room on the 53rd floor of the Trump Tower. He told the outlet there was "definitely an explosion" and that the windows had begun to shake.

The Trump Hotel spans 64 floors with around 1,300 suites, according to its website.

Trump recently named Musk to co-lead a presidential advisory commission, the Department of Government Efficiency, after the two became close during Trump's campaign.

There's no cure either. People who know the truth also know there's nothing you can do except keep watching the destruction.
Agreed. Extremists from Islam religion kill people everyday and how many people here who are apparently muslims discuss on this topic seriously, how many threads did our resident neighbours open on this topic? And Islamists here playing what-aboutary. These people need to really introspect themselves on why there is always only persons from one religion carrying out these type of attacks.

Investigators examining if New Orleans, Cybertruck suspects connected through military

Investigators are looking into whether there’s any military connection between that suspect in the New Orleans attack and the driver in a Cybertruck explosion outside a Trump hotel in Las Vegas, two law enforcement sources familiar with the matter told NBC News.

The driver in New Orleans is dead after shooting at police, and a person was found dead inside the Cybertruck after that vehicle exploded and caught fire, officials have said.

But whether the drivers overlapped in the time they served in the military, or at any locations, was unclear. The sources said it was a potentially notable investigative strand.

The suspect in the New Orleans attack was a Texas man and Army veteran, officials, including President Joe Biden, have said.

Two law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation have told NBC News that the suspect in the Las Vegas blast had previous military experience — although they did not elaborate at the time, stressing that the investigation was still unfolding.

The person found dead in the Cybertruck incident has not been publicly identified by law enforcement.

The vehicles used in both incidents were rented through Turo, a car-sharing app, the police chief for Las Vegas said. Turo said it is cooperating fully with investigators.

Biden last night said that investigators were looking into whether the two incidents could be connected.

“We’re tracking the explosion of a Cybertruck outside the Trump hotel in Las Vegas,” Biden said then.

“Law enforcement and the intelligence community are investigating this as well — including whether there’s any possible connection with the attack in New Orleans,” he said.

Islamists are cancer to civilised societies. RIP to the innocent lives lost.

There are no civilised societies these days, everyone is racing to kill en masse. There does seem to be a rise in individuals who are going off the rails and attaching themselves to some cause or other, be that Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism etc. Heck we even had a self-declared atheist running down victims at a Christmas market in Germany last week.

I actually think most societies are civilised. I was just using the standards applied by the poster I was replying to.

A month ago former ISIS members were celebrated by CIA, MI5, west etc. as they took over Syria.

ISIS was created by CIA, sometimes your monsters you created come back to haunt you.

Sad for the civilians killed.

Looks like just another episode of US mentally ills. Ofcourse now they will find the isis flag and other affiliations because he has a Muslim name, AIPAC would never let such an opportunity go. No mental illness plays any role then, such a typical western saga with such incidents. And the typical godi clan here got the opportunity to cease on the moment. You have been silent all along with genoicde so easy on your nonsensical islamophobia.

That one person does not represent a whole religion. Of course your selective outrage is palpable… usual suspects jumping up and down like chimps in glee no doubt.

R.I.P to the innocent victims..

(Why allow such people entry to your country, same is happening in the UK. Leave the sh!ts in their 3rd world crap. Asylum, my ass)

Agreed. And it is equally evil to reside in such locations and pay taxes to the nukers and their sidekicks.

Om Shanti

Agreed. If one had made a conscious choice to reside in such a location rather than be born there.

Another terrorist incident by someone from the Abrahamic faith. What’s the surprise here.

Yet apologists on this forum will deny this common occurrence and some Einsteins will even start calling Sanatanis terrorists and their claim being that Modi’s hitmen are eliminating terrorists on foreign soil sparing the life of innocent non political folks and that according to them is same as hundreds of terrorist incidents occurring in the world by people of the Abrahamic faith, mostly from one religion.

Until people don’t wholeheartedly condemn the acts of their community members and discuss about better upbringing of children in certain communities, there won’t be any change.

Fact is that kids in certain communities are being taught violence from a very early age making certain mentally sick kids literal time bombs

Take a leaf out of your parents' books - move away. They mistakenly chose Churchill over Jinnah. Now it's up to you to choose Khameini over Starmer.

I agree that there is always the option to move where you fit best, although I don't know what makes you think Iran would be that place. One thing is for sure, if I thought cows were the ultimate godhead I wouldn't choose the land of McDonalds as an ideal destination.

New Orleans ramming is the deadliest attack in the US since Maine mass shooting

The New Year’s Day truck ramming that killed 15 people and injured dozens more in New Orleans is the deadliest attack on US soil since the October 2023 mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine that killed 18 people.

The suspect in the New Orleans ramming, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, authorities have said. The shooter in the Maine attack, Robert Card, was a certified firearms instructor and a member of the US Army Reserve, law enforcement officials in Maine told CNN.

The New Orleans ramming is also the deadliest attack in the United States using a weaponized vehicle since the Associated Press/USA TODAY/Northeastern University Mass Killing Database began tracking data in 2006.

The second-deadliest vehicle ramming attack was the Christmas Day Parade attack in Waukesha, Wisconsin in 2021, according to the database. That attack killed six people after a man rammed his SUV through the parade.

New Orleans city councilman says bolstering security will be costly

The exact measures that will be taken to increase security in New Orleans in the future are still under discussion, a city council member says whatever is done will not come cheaply.

Oliver Thomas, chair of the city’s Criminal Justice Committee, was walking through the French Quarter Thursday morning, telling CNN’s Manu Raju that he’s trying to figure out what the city can do differently, and how they can pay for it.

“Even if we’re successful at preventing some of these events, the evil people are successful at making us redirect our finances that could go to help American citizens and help American programs, and we’re putting it into security just so we can stay alive and be safe,” Thomas said. “That’s crazy.”

The chief of police promised “hundreds of officers” on the streets Thursday as the city hosts the Sugar Bowl. Thomas added that they have to do what is necessary to keep people safe, but bemoaned the way terrorism is changing their lives.

“Even when we are safe, they’re winning,” he said, “because those are funds that American cities and other communities could use to help our seniors or help our children.”

It seems that supporters of Hindutva have shown up in large numbers to express their outrage, likely because they cannot separate themselves from Hindutva. In this thread, they are making every effort to associate all Muslims with extremism, despite the fact that Muslims, past, present, and future, have consistently condemned ISIS. Meanwhile, many Hindus appear to align themselves with Hindutva bigotry in some way, which speaks volumes about their stance.

Truly remarkable group of people.

Imran Khan calls Osama Bin Laden a national hero of Pakistan.

What are you talking about.

Someone who masterminded killing of thousands of innocent people of all religions is a national hero for Muslims?

I can't believe some posters are still defending by accusing "Western propaganda," "Godi media," bla bla. Islamists have issues with everyone—can you name one group they don’t have a problem with? They have issues with Germans, the Swedish, and, of course, the EU. You criticize Western countries but still choose to live there. You can't live in your own countries with crumbling economies and outdated principles, yet you push for Sharia law in foreign lands where you reside.

Strictly speaking, Islamists struggle to live peacefully among themselves and with others. Some Pakistani posters here celebrated when the Taliban came to power, beating their chests and making grand statements. And now, what has happened? They're fighting each other, killing one another. As I said, you can't live together.

Not Just IK, many posters called him a good person and not a terrorist.
Imran Khan freed all TTP terrorists from prison, and these guys were celebrated at the time—just look at the old threads. And now, they’re preaching. The irony, lol.

Indians are so desperate to align every Muslim, particularly Pakistani and Indian Muslims with ISIS just because they can justify their support for Hindutva extremists elected politicians.

You won’t find any Muslim on this forum supporting ISIS, the same group that was considered the best group by some people because they helped ousted the Russian backed dictator.

You can see it in this thread. One Indian can't surpress his hatred long enough to refrain from spouting Islamists are the curse to civilised societies, then when he is answered (very politely) that this is not a curse incurred solely by Islamists, every hindutva bro comes piling in to vent their bile

Sorry Indian friends, but you WILL be taken to account for what you say.

They are a Muslim-majority nation that opposes the country responsible for nuclear actions (as per your criteria) and has strong opposition to Israel, aligning with your (and your forefathers') lifelong stance. It seems like a win-win situation from your perspective.

Absolutely garbage to read usual suspects on this forum are openly supporting terrorism and defending them with zero condemnation. When I read some of the posts here, I wonder if some of these guys actually belong to the sleeper cell themselves. Aparently most of them lives in UK and USA and that is the scary part.

Exactly.

We always condemn whenever we see something bad.

BJP posters generally don't condemn theirs. They even make excuses.

You took one correction of a anti-Islamist hindutva to presume I want to live in an Islamic country where I would be a foreigner? You aren't thinking this through logically. I have posted a thread in the past that secular rule is the best way forward. Why would Iran be the ideal?

Yes I am anti-israel, because they are a fake nation committing genocide on the local population. Anyway, enough explanation, back on topic.

No one is condoning terrorism here, I am sure all of us consider this perp a deranged lunatic who deserves to be put down. We will also slap down any hindutva who tries to make political capital of such a heinous act to spout Islamophobic drivel.

People who cant string a sentence together without barking 'Hindutva' irrespective of the topic, must wake up and smell the coffee. Repeating lies multiple times and shutting down few posters in this forum will not change the reality. Hindutvas don'y go around the world and ram cars in Christmas market, blow up subway trains or detonate themselves in busy highstreet. On a forum where even a dog being stolen in UP is reported, had Hindus have done even 5% of what being blamed here...we will see threads daily.
