RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) – The construction of a border fence has commenced Tuesday at Durand Line, the internationally recognized boundary between Pakistan and Afghanistan, on the directions of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) DG Major General Asif Ghafoor, the step is a part of Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad and it will improve the security situation for both countries. “Measures to improve security situation along the Pak-Afg border continue,” he started.

The border fence construction was directed by the Army Chief. This is the phase 1 of stopping infiltration of terrorists from Afghanistan in various agencies of Waziristan. He stated, “In line with the directions of COAS, phased fencing of entire Pak-Afg border has commenced. In phase 1, high infiltration prone border areas in Bajaur, Mohmand and Khyber Agencies are being fenced.”

He also shed light on the phase 2 of the plan in which border fencing will take place in Balochistan. “In phase 2 fencing of remaining border areas including Baluchistan will be executed.”

Apart from border fencing, Pakistan Army and FC Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are constructing new forts and border posts to improve surveillance and defensibility. He concluded saying, “A secure Pak-Afghan border is in common interest of both countries and a well coordinated border security mechanism is essential for enduring peace and stability.”

Good moves. We need to keep these ungrateful Afghani terrorists out of Pakistan. By all means support India from your refugee camps in Afghanistan. I hope you lot also enjoyed how we beat your favourite Cricket team.

A move originally proposed by Musharraf. Fencing Durand line is a step forward towards security of Pakistan.

Yawn, heard similar news like million times. If COAS truly wants to improve the security we need to have friendly relations with Afghanistan and make sure Afghanistan becomes peaceful again. This alternative will be much more cheaper and security situation will improve too.

Great move!!! Hopefully all of the damn border with Afghanistan and Iran is fenced and then eventually India's as well.

I don't know about Iran or India, but on the Afg border we need to fence it and then dig a 100m wide ditch on our side, fill it with water and put crocs in it.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Maybe add a bunch of sharks too.

India already fenced broder with Pakistan and are planning to seal it within few years

Trump wants to build ‘a wall’ and expects Mexico to pay for it. Now Pakistan wants America to pay for the Pak-Afg fence. Who says politicians don’t have a sense of humour lol.

Pakistan to Trump: Pay for Our Border Fence to Reduce Terrorism

Pakistan is pushing for the completion of a fence along its disputed border with Afghanistan -- and it wants the U.S. to help pay for it.

Less than 10 percent of the fence planned along the 1,456 miles (2,343 kilometers) of mountainous border with Afghanistan has been completed so far due to financial constraints. Even so, Pakistan Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said the barrier should be finished by the end of 2019.

“It won’t cost them much,” Asif said of the U.S. in an interview on Feb. 2 in Islamabad. “The war is costing them much more.”

Pakistan has come under increasing pressure to act against the Afghan Taliban and affiliated Haqqani network after President Donald Trump accused officials in Islamabad of allowing them safe haven. Last month, Trump suspended about $2 billion worth of military aid to the nuclear-armed nation and accused Pakistan of giving “lies and deceit” in return for years of U.S. funding.

The border fence will stop the flow of militants crossing into both countries unchecked, Asif said, adding that Pakistan also considers the return of more than 2 million Afghan refugees critical for peace. He called on the U.S. to assist with the fencing and repatriation of the Afghan refugees.

“It’s a free for all,” Asif said, adding that as many as 70,000 people crossing the border a day. “These issues are facilitating terrorism.’’

When asked about Trump’s allegations, Asif said that Pakistan wanted better ties with the U.S.

“Both sides are trying to decrease the stress,” he said.

Both Pakistan and Afghanistan have denounced the other for harboring insurgents, prompting relations to drastically sour in the past year. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has said Pakistan is waging an “undeclared war of aggression” against his nation and has threatened armed confrontation over the fence across the disputed Durand Line, which divided the largely ethnic Pashtun communities in the region during British colonial rule.

Asif said the roughly 600,000 Afghan refugees that went back to their home country last year have largely returned to Pakistan. He said the camps are breeding grounds for insurgency, and the international community must do more to help with the burden and conditions in Afghanistan for returnees.

Read a QuickTake Q&A on why pushing Pakistan isn’t simple

Pakistan has faced repeated criticism for the forced return of some refugees who have fled war across the border, which the United Nations says is against international law.

Qaiser Khan Afridi, a spokesman for the UN Refugee Agency in Islamabad, said there were funding shortages for Afghan refugees as resources have been diverted to other places like Syria and Iraq.

Pakistan and Afghanistan have 235 crossing points, some frequently used by militants and drug traffickers, of which 18 can be accessed by vehicles, according to a report by the Afghanistan Analysts Network research group in October.

The Taliban can move with ease between the two countries in the often lawless border lands and are usually waved through by Pakistan security forces, according to the AAN, citing conversations with multiple current and former Taliban fighters, doctors and Afghans living in the region. Pakistan’s military has long denied supporting militant groups.

“Any free movement from their side to our side, or our side to their side, can breed mistrust and obviously some terrorist activity on our side or on their soil,” Asif said. “It’s in our mutual interest that the border is fenced

he is calling their bluff. The pakistanis know that the US and Afghanistan oppose the border fence so they can infiltrate terrorists over the border and perpetuate the war. This will be another stick to beat the US narrative with. We are already using it. Eventually the fence will go up and it will reduce incursions but we cant afford to continue monitoring every inch of it..The 18 areas will be fenced and other key crossing points will get new forts..but ultimatley peace in afghanistan is the only way to stop this stuff..

The US doesnt want that..

Fencing is a good start

But in long run we need concrete barrier wall with forts like turkey is building and what Israel has

Also measures for digging under Ground to bypass the fence

Maybe some sort of underground barrier

Then a trench and mines to reinforce the fence as a second barrier

A 40 mile underground barrier with gaza is costing Israel 500 million dollars

Then a fence on overground

500 million is not crazy money we can start building this in sensitive areas in Baluchistan like chaman etc

we dont need effing trump to pay.

Fence across border to be completed by end of 2019/20.
