Ehsan Mani contradicts Sourav Ganguly, says Asia Cup venue not finalised yet [Update Post #71]

Wondering in what capacity Ganguly gave the statement ? He could have expressed India's position but should not have made the " announcement" where the Asia cup will be played.

The decision on whether the Asia Cup will be hosted in a neutral venue will have to wait as the Asian Cricket Council (ACC)’s meeting, which was to be held in Dubai on Tuesday, has been postponed due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

“Some of our colleagues from the far east could not travel due to the outbreak of coronavirus. So, it was decided to postpone it till the end of the month,” Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief, Ehsan Mani, told Sportstar on Sunday.

The PCB chief also stated that the meeting will now be held later in the month, during the International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah were to attend the ACC meeting.

But over the last few days, around 730 cases of coronavirus were reported in the UAE, creating panic among the travellers and the locals.

A couple of days ago, Ganguly had stated that the Asia Cup will be played at a neutral venue -- in the United Arab Emirates. However, Mani clarified that no decision has been taken yet. “We have the hosting rights. It’s a decision that we will take in the interest of all the Asian cricket council members. It’s not about Pakistan or India, it’s about what’s important for the ACC,” Mani said.

International cricket returned to Pakistan recently, with the country hosting bilateral series and the Pakistan Super League. But with chances of India not travelling there due to security woes, the tournament could, in the end, be shifted to UAE or Bangladesh.

“A lot of money that we raise from these matches goes towards the supporting the cricketing nations in Asia. So, we will have to take a call keeping everything in mind,” the PCB chief said.

In an interview to this publication earlier, Mani had stated that the PCB will abide by whatever decision is taken by the ACC on hosting the Asia Cup -- which is scheduled to be held in September.

Pakistan to hold Asia Cup at the neutral venue: Ehsan Mani

The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Ehsan Mani who is well aware that the Indian team will not be touring Pakistan to play Asia Cup, has come up with good news in favour of India. While addressing the media reporters at the press conference, Ehsan Mani said that the upcoming Asia Cup will be hosted at a neutral venue scheduled for this September.

PCB chairman also confirmed that Pakistan is still the host of the forthcoming event while adding that he was least bothered about the statements made by India’s cricket body, BCCI. “Asia Cup will be hosted by Pakistan however the event would have to take place at a neutral venue. If we insist on hosting the event in Pakistan, the Indian team will not take part. We do not care what the BCCI says,” Mani added in a statement.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) finds itself in a Catch-22 situation and is now looking at a September-early October window to host the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) before the T20 World Cup gets underway in Australia.

With the three-week countrywide lockdown likely to be extended beyond April 14, the Board’s slim hopes of having a truncated tournament next month has evaporated. At the same time, Board president Sourav Ganguly and his men find themselves under enormous pressure from the players and stakeholders to host the tournament at some point during the year.

According to sources, the Board is likely to come out with an announcement shortly, possibly early next week, that the IPL has been “suspended till further notice” because of the prevailing situation. As of now, the tournament has been put off till April 15.

“The BCCI is unlikely to say that the tournament is cancelled. They are going to keep the option open for it to be played in the latter part of the year. The stakes are too high and they are hoping for things to normalise by then,” said someone in the know of things.

“The broadcasters are willing to telecast matches even if they are held in empty stadiums. A shortened version is also fine but the cash-rich league has to take place. More double-headers can also be slotted. If it happens before the T20 World Cup, it will then serve as a preparatory tournament for the players.”

The Asia Cup is supposed to be played in September though doubts continue to hover over that T20 meet. Pakistan were the hosts this time but following India’s objection it is likely to be staged in the UAE, if at all it is held. A final decision is yet to be taken.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ehsan Mani admitted there was “uncertainty” surrounding the tournament at this point in time.

“There’s uncertainty over the Asia Cup. Nothing has been decided yet. The whole world is in an uncertain state. You don’t know what it will be like in September.

“Don’t get me wrong but it will depend on a number of factors… Mere speculation won’t help. May be the situation will be clearer in a month’s time,” Mani told The Telegraph on Thursday.

The UAE is currently under a two-week lockdown since the beginning of this week. Hosting the tournament there will mean obtaining permission from the government and other agencies. There are a lot of other logistics involved too which will be tough to comply with at short notice.

“There are a lot of ifs and buts involved. Players too may not be willing to go and play there. The world will be a different place and tough measures will be followed. I don’t see the Asia Cup happening there in September,” a Board member of one of the competing nations said.

“The Asia Cup can be held at a later date. Both IPL and Asia Cup have the same broadcasters and they will only be too happy to telecast the former. The availability of overseas players will also not be an issue,” said one of the stakeholders.

England have white ball commitments against Pakistan and Ireland during that period. Such series can always be postponed, if need be, after mutual consultations.

The Australian and South African players have no internationals to play in September.

Everything though hinges on the hope that coronavirus will be contained in the coming months and the situation will improve enough for some kind of normality to be restored.

Shoaib Akhtar type proposals for India v Pak games looking more likely to happen as opposed to big tournaments when cricket does restart - very difficult to organize stuff at short notice.

Ehsan Mani:

"The Asia Cup is a big challenge, we don't know what will happen by Sep-Oct when this is scheduled for. We are hopeful it will happen but if things don't improve and it doesn't, it'll be a challenge for us to see what happens with it next year.

"For me, the Asia Cup is important because it results in funding for Asian cricket. The resources are limited and when we have Asia Cup every 2 years, we allocate money for the next two years for the associate countries like Nepal, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, UAE, Saudi Arabia. To support cricket in these countries, it's important to hold the Asia Cup.

"The factual position is that the ACC meeting didn't take place. The ICC meeting was scheduled for March and they were both to be held together. With one postponed, the other was also postponed.

"As for when and where the Asia Cup will be held, no one knows that because we don't know how the situation will progress. When there is some clarity about this then we'll sit and talk. It's good that the ACC renewed some commercial contracts last year, so if we hold the Asia Cup, it can be activated very quickly. But when and where it'll be held isn't in our hands right now."

It is well known fact that it is the BCCI who dictates in cricket overall, so cant really trust or believe what Ehsan Mani thinks or says will happen for sure unless the BCCI officially makes a statement supporting his comments
