Having just completed a momentous Test series that determined the second finalist in the ICC World Test Championship, India and England resume hostilities in a five-match T20I series.

Overview
India v England, 1st T20I
Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad
12 March; 7pm local time, 1.30pm GMT

The series pits the top two teams in the world against one another, with England the current occupants of the ICC’s No.1 ranking in T20I cricket and India sitting just below.

They could swap spots by the end of this series. A 4-1 series win or better for India will see them rise to the top spot on the ladder, with England slipping down.

Given England’s last T20I series loss came way back in 2018, India will have to be at their very best to win the series that comfortably.

Eoin Morgan's England are on top of the T20I rankings.
Rankings aside, a series win for either team will be a boost for their confidence ahead of this year’s ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in India. They will both be considered among the frontrunners for the trophy when the tournament commences.

Victory for England will show them they have the right stuff to win in India. Similarly, victory for India will reaffirm to Virat Kohli’s team they can beat the very best.

And the series won’t be short of star power either. In Dawid Malan, England have the top-ranked T20I batsman in the world, while captain Eoin Morgan sits 10th. In reply, India have third-placed KL Rahul and sixth-placed Kohli. Throw in the likes of Rohit Sharma, Ben Stokes, Rishabh Pant, Jos Buttler and Hardik Pandya, and the series should not be short of fireworks with the bat.

Not that it’ll be an easy series for the batters, with bowlers of the calibre of Adil Rashid – fifth on the ICC’s T20I bowling rankings – Jofra Archer, Yuzvendra Chahal, and the returning Bhuvneshwar Kumar all involved.

Remember last time

England’s most recent T20I series defeat was actually against India. That was in 2018. They have lost their past two bilateral T20I series against India, with their last series victory against them coming in 2014.

The 2018 encounter in England was split 2-1 with Rohit named Player of the Series for his 137 runs at 68.50. One hundred of those runs came in the series decider at Bristol. Another century at the start of the campaign from Rahul had earlier given India the lead before England bounced back to win the second match.

Look out for

Virat Kohli – The star batter is on track to become the first men’s player to ever score 3000 T20I runs this series. He currently has 2928 to his name and it’d be a surprise if he did not fly past the 3000-mark against England.

India have only played three T20Is in the past 12 months, but with a home T20 World Cup around the corner, they’ll be looking to build up a head of steam. Expect the India captain to lead by example with the bat.

Dawid Malan – Malan sits atop the ICC T20I men’s batting rankings for a reason. He has scored more runs than anyone in the world in the format in the past 12 months, and he has been both reliable and aggressive. His 386 runs in that time have come at an average of 55.14 and strike rate of 144.56.

He averaged 86.50 in England’s last T20I series, passing 50 in two of his free innings, with a high score of 99*.

Need to get rid of Iyer. Teams will bowl short and fast against him. Wont feed him with trundlers or spinners. Saini is no good. Thakur, while good in tests will be cannon fodder in T20s. Bowling is a major worry. Almost SL level.

Unlike test series expect very close contest.hopefully pitches are flat in t20 series

Not sure about crowds being allowed. The cases in India have roared back last week and hitting over 20K a day. Vaccination capacity is there but not enough people are coming forward to get the shots.

Why do people want SKY over Kishan? Kishan is much more of an X-factor/game-changer style player than SKY in T20s.

I agree with you. They can go with Ishan Kishan, get him in the side and play the T20 cricket in the style it should be played.

But I think SKY is ahead in reckoning compared to Kishan because he has been doing it for longer time so people are picking him.

Also means he's older and has fewer years left in him.

Both thinking short-term and long-term, it makes more sense to pick Kishan over SKY.

Yes, Iyer has already had his share of opportunities but hasn't done anything of worth. Its high time we try SKY or Ishan at 4. Saini has pace compared to Thakur, Bhuvi and Chahar but is a bit wayward. Siraj may be a better option considering his confidence would be high after his performance in the test series.

I dont think we are at SL level even with this attack. Also once Bumrah, Shami and jaddu return it will be much stronger.

Isn't SKY around 30 which means he has a good 6-7 years ahead. Though Ishan is a very good prospect with some great hitting ability SKY is unique in the sense that he is a 360 degree player able to play on both sides and scoops behind the wicket as well making it tougher for the bowler to bowl at him.

With respect to WT20s, we need a guy who is in best form now as both the tournaments will happen by next year. For ODIs, we should look at long term prospect.

Who is SKY?

Surya Kumar Yadav

I like Ishan Kishan because of is ability to hit clean sixes . India already have enough batsmen who like to build up their innings. Need someone who can smash from get go.

The limited overs leg of this tour is not being shown on channel 4 in UK, that's disappointing.

Skysports have picked up the rights.

SKY is more than capable of doing that.

In other news, Kohli loses another toss.

I'd like someone to pull out and compare Faf and Kohli's luck with the coin.

This lineup deserves to lose. Pathetic bowling lineup

Eng on the otherhand looks scary

India seem reluctant to make a decision on who to drop out of KL ,Rohit, and Dhwaan. SKY should be playing over Iyer. Don't see a need for Iyer at 4 in T20s. He needs a while to get going.

Actually Virat has categorically stated that Rohit and KL are the preferred openers. Dhawan would be out then. Just that Rohit is resting. But you are right about Iyer.

What is your preferred Indian T20I lineup? :inti

This bowling squad is poor. My best lineup would be ( generally and not this series )

Rohit
KL
Kohli
SKY
Pant
Hardik
Sundar
Jadeja
Bhuvi
Rahul Chahar
Bumrah

Need a part time spinner though somewhere. Yuzi is a liability. Cant field, cant bat.

India: 1 KL Rahul, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 Rishabh Pant (wk), 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Washington Sundar, 9 Shardul Thakur, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal

Wow...dosent the stadium look a sight...beyoootful.....and that awesome ring of fire ....ledlights...go Indiiaaaaaaaa....:salute

Sky sports is having their own commentary panel. Good that I dont have to hear Murali Karthik and Gavaskar :))

I have put KL as my profile pic. Expect him to fire!

Yeaaaa....go KL.....and when he goes...he looks a gadzillion dollars....imho the main prob with him , especially when he getsout hitting the big shorts, he does not bend his left knee enough...sort of leaving him in no mans land....but when he gets it right....cue pat cummins for 6 second innings adelaide 2018or the eng t20's2018...gee whiz watch out....

Rahul out. They are destroying his game by keeping him in bench forever.

As far as stadiums go....has to be one of the most awesome spectacles in world cricket.......imaging full house....is one of the most awesome inspiring sights...

What a pathetic team Kohli has chosen! Absolutely pathetic! We deserve to lose.

Eng have absolutely owned us in white ball cricket in last few years.

Can't believe now I have to watch Shiki boy perform with bat and makes a permanent place in the side.

I am more interested in how Kohli is going to play. He is definitely not playing like old Kohli these days. :inti

Archers gold chain weighing him down.

But for real havent seen one like that in a while.

Any one else feel Harsha should retire by now?he's too grating on the nerves with his weird metaphors and cringeworthy descriptions....i mean he was ok and novelty in the 90's...but he's outlived his shelf life and
should stick to the IPL ...just annoying....
