As the league stage of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 reaches its twilight, hosts England and 2015 runners-up New Zealand look to confirm a spot in the semi-finals as they face off at The Riverside Durham on Wednesday, 3 July.

Overview

England v New Zealand
The Riverside Durham, Chester-le-Street
2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Match 41
Wednesday, 03 July; 10.30am GMT, 09.30 am local

An ultra-aggressive batting approach, smart bowling aided by some shrewd captaincy and vibrancy in the field - England's performance during their 31-run win against India reminded everyone of their dominance in one-day cricket over the last four years, and the potential they hold in this format. Roy's return has instantly bolstered England, as he resumed his imperious opening partnership with Jonny Bairstow against India, where the duo put on 160 for the first wicket. Against a tough opponent in New Zealand, in what could potentially be a virtual quarter-final, England will need to bring in similar intensity.

New Zealand, after being unbeaten for the first six matches, come into this game after back-to-back losses against Pakistan and Australia. While the bowlers have delivered on each occasion, the consistent failures of the opening batsmen have left Kane Williamson and the middle order to do the heavy lifting. New Zealand need Martin Guptill to fire, much like he did in the 2015 edition, where he had emerged as the leading run-scorer of the tournament.

As of this moment, it's a bit of a stretch to imagine New Zealand not making the semi-finals, given they have a strong net run rate. Even so, they would want to finish off well, as a heavy defeat could possibly rest their qualification chances on the performances of Pakistan and Bangladesh, and their clash on Saturday.

Key Players

Ben Stokes (England): The New Zealand-born England all-rounder has scored four fifties this tournament, with the last one against India proving to be a game-changing difference. With his grit and aggressive stroke-play, Stokes might once again be a key player for England in a must-win game.

Ross Taylor (New Zealand): Ross Taylor, alongside Kane Williamson, has been leading the New Zealand batting at this World Cup. Taylor, who has already scored five centuries against England, including a match-winning 181*, which is also his career best, in a run-chase of 335 in their last meeting at Dunedin, will look to register another big score against one of his favourite opponents on Wednesday.

Conditions

A fine day is expected in Durham, with good sunny spells, although there could be a partial build-up of cloud and some gentle winds in the middle of the day. Teams batting second have won three of the last four ODIs played at The Riverside Durham, with the last one being won by Sri Lanka by a narrow margin of 23 runs, defending 338 against West Indies on Monday.

Squads

England: Eoin Morgan (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler (wk), Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, James Vince, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (c), Ross Taylor, Tom Latham (wk), Tom Blundell (wk), Mitchell Santner, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Colin Munro, Ish Sodhi, Henry Nicholls, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Jimmy Neesham

• England have won three of their last four men’s ODIs against New Zealand (L1), including
their most recent fixture (10th March 2018) where they successfully chased down the Black
Caps’ 223 runs with 104 balls remaining.
• This will be the ninth meeting at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup between England and
New Zealand; England won the first three matches before the Black Caps went on to win the
last five matches on the bounce.
• England have won six of their last eight men’s ODIs against New Zealand in England and
Wales (L2), including a match at The Riverside, Durham in 2015 where Jonny Bairstow
(England) produced a Player-of-the-Match performance (83*, 2 catches and 1 stumping).
• England have managed to record victory in 10 of their last 13 completed men’s ODI
matches; two of those three losses have come in their last three outings however (v Pakistan
and Sri Lanka).
• New Zealand will be looking to avoid three consecutive defeats at the ICC Men’s Cricket
World Cup for the first time since 1979-1983, a span that included back-to-back defeats to
England.
• In their most recent ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 match, against India, England kept
their opponents to 28-1 after 10 overs; the lowest of the tournament so far.
• Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow’s (England) 160-run opening partnership against India in their
last ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup fixture outing set a new record for being the highest
opening stand at the tournament so far; it was also the second-highest ever for the wicket in
England’s history at the tournament (172 runs – Moeen Ali & Ian Bell v Scotland, 2015).
• Kane Williamson (New Zealand) passed 6,000 ODI runs (6,008) in his most recent ICC Men’s
Cricket World Cup 2019 match, becoming the third-fastest man to reach the mark (139
innings) in men’s ODI history behind Hashim Amla (South Africa, 123 innings) and Virat Kohli
(India, 136 innings).
• Trent Boult (New Zealand) became the first man from his country to complete a hat-trick in
ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup history, producing the feat in his side’s most recent outing in
the 2019 tournament (against Australia).
• Liam Plunkett (England) bowled a full 10-over allocation at an ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup
for the first time in his most recent match against India, taking his best figures ever in a World
Cup game (3-55, econ 5.5).

England are overrated chasers if they lose the toss

had india won the toss and batted first England would have lost the game without a doubt. India still could have won that match without dhawan had they picked the right team for a flat pitch. Should have dropped a spinner and picked jadeja for instance and played shankar who would have leaked less runs than the spinners on such a pitch. They are also without dhawan who is better than roy. Now with Mayank they are strong again. I hope England get smashed by n.z and pakistan pull through.
This world cup needs pakistan in the semis not England. Pakistan was robbed off a point vs Lanka. They have finally found the right combination and are a force now.
In saying that team that wins the toss in semis and finals has a HUUUUGE advantage.
To negate the toss effects you need great bowling. india and pakistan have that. Australia does too.

btw people forget Australia have chased only twice in this tournament. They lost one and won one. They aren't exactly great chasers either. They have massive holes in the middle as it's hit or miss with Maxwell and stoinis who is garbage. Carey is solid though.
finch is hit or miss too. Nothing special.

The best chasing team is really unclear to me. England are definitely not the best chasers when they lose the toss.

They just have spotted an obvious nick in the first place. Tactically India made several mistakes. Overusing Kuldeep's overs upfront instead of reserving a few.

NZ is smart and under-rated here. They don't do well when they are considered favourites, but have the ability to surprise any top team with conviction on a consistent basis.

No doubt England at it's best will be too much to handle for this NZ side. Remains to be seen how England absord the pressure of THE knockout game of this tournament.

Should be a cracker of a game. Whatever the result, there will be fireworks as a consequence.

Kane williamson has to bring his A game captaincy skills today. Wish you good luck NZ against the world class FTBs.

They should play Sodhi and surprise England. They are not that special against spin and if boundaries are normal they can certainly lose a few wickets to him in the middle which could be difference between 300 and 350.

If England carry on playing like they did against India, they will win the WC.

But NZ are a very similar sort of team and have been successful in this tournament for a reason.

Media report saying Lockie Ferguson may not play due to injury concerns

Pity. About time L. Ferguson was put in his place. The only two teams who could do it were India and England, and it appears that he won't play against either of them (at least not yet).

L. Ferguson is a very good bowler, but weak batting lineups have made him look invincible. You need batsmen like Rohit, Kohli, Bairstow, Roy etc. who can take on his nasty bouncers and deposit them into the stands. Hafeez actually looked half-decent against his bouncers but was all at sea against the good length of deliveries. It was a miracle he didn't nick one after playing and missing a dozen times.

Jeetayga be jeetayga, new zealand jeetayga!

Shame about ferguson, but southee can be a game changer!

Big game for Pakistan! we will know today if they have a chance to go through or not.

No Lockie Ferguson today.

Huge blow for NZ and Pakistan.

I think England are winning this.

Only improved since then.

Only improved since then.

Of course L. Ferguson can do well against them, but they are fully capable of taming him and they were the two biggest challenges for him in this World Cup. He is quite lucky to evade both for now.

England have won the toss and have opted to bat

England win the toss and bat.

Not looking good for Pakistan.

Ferguson wouldn’t have mattered if England were chasing they woulda choked under pressure even if Rao Iftikhar was New Zealand’s lead bowler

England need to get 400 here or be bowled out for 50.

England win toss and bat

Double blow with Lockie out and England winning the toss.

I suggest Pakistani fans don't waste their time and do something else.

No Lockie and England batting first. No point supporting NZ here brothers! Support England and hope they put up 480 and bowl out NZ for 130 :)

Poms are so arrogant Vaughan is like uhh we won the toss were already onto the semi finals

Newzeland is a gun team shame you’ve already given up southee is gonna rip them apart

God we're crap.

Things are so dire that there's a better chance of us losing by 200 runs than there is us winning.

Just don't kill the NRR and miss out, that's all I ask.

I will do something else, I actually have no choice, I have to work :)) but one eye will be on this match.

But hopefully Southee’s swing is still there. Need a 5-for from Boult.

If England get off to a fast start NZ will have one eye on nrr . It’s just the mind even if you’re safe .

Looks a flat track England strong favourite.

NZ will in sha Allah win this. Never give up!

Stop whimpering! Pak fans can really be irritating. Match hasn’t even started yet!

Said it yesterday why aint viewers shown the coin when toss is done.

Crickets integrity is at a all time low with eng going crying to icc for flat pitches & ind throwing games so certain teams don't go through. Match ref can be dodgy as hansie cronje

We're going to get smacked for 350+ today, I just know it.

He bowls raw pace fastest bowler in the world on average speed at the moment I wish he could knock some sense into you as well with a ferocious bouncer of his so you wouldn’t be chatting all this crap and trolling 24/7.

Looking forward to see Pak media have news that England and New Zealand conspired with each other to keep Pakistan out of the semis

We haven't gotten a single flat pitch this tournament.

England seem to have gotten them in most of their games... when they didn't, they folded. And in a must win game against India, long behold another flat pitch appears...

England 221/9
Newzealand 222/7

I predicted this score couple of days ago...
Don't tell me ... U didn't saw the scorecard here first

Lol its over for us.England batting first on a flat pitch.
Might as well forfeit the match and send Pakistan home already.
