What's new

England (360 & 296/3) beat New Zealand (329 & 326) by 7 wickets in the 3rd Test at Leeds

Boult knocks off Pope's off stump, England 2 down now.

ENG : 14/2 (4.4)

England trail by 315 runs.

Overcast conditions, Boult has his tail up, ball moving, collapse is on?

Boult looks in gr8 rhythm just getting them to swing massive.

On another note - Eng got a few last names that are so 'earthy' - Creepy Crawley, Leach, Lees, root,
Potts lol :)

Boult on fire

England are a despicable side but they have some potential.
Kiwis are just pathetic. Only half decent in swinging conditions if they win the toss. No wonder Amans team get flogged vs Aussies everywhere and they pretty much lose to India, s.africa away from home almost every time. Infact saffers have never lost a series both home and away vs Kiwis.

Potts played decently. Surprised by that tbh. Jamie looks good. Rest are all mediocre. Heavily dependent on root and stokes. This side is still better than their 90s and 80s plus pre historic amateur league teams, make no mistake about it. Key strnegth to this weak bowling side is their depth in ARs. That's their strength.

Sir Joe Root departs with another low score.

Looks like Muhammad Yousuf record will be safe tgis year as well.

Trent Boult is the best left arm fast bowler I've seen in Tests since Wasim Akram. He has absolutely mastered the art of inswing to right handers. Incredible bowling by an extremely underrated bowler.

Kiwis enjoying the benefit of the changing conditions here.

Well, they deserve a bit of luck after the COVID problems and injuries they have faced.

Easy to forget when we are getting hammered in a session that we have already won the series.

We weren’t going to have everything our own way for the whole summer.

It's amazing how good Boult is when conditions help swing/seam bowling. Especially considering that's he is an up and down trundler when conditions favour batting sides.

England might not even reach the follow on target here lol

44 runs to go.

They will have to hope the Kiwis get shot out for 100 and then it gets sunny for the fourth innings.

They will have to turn Headingley 2019 into Headingley 2022 and do another run chase! :)

What an odd pitch Headingley is, with such strange conditions and a lightning fast outfield.

Can be all out for 50 on it or can score 400.

This is why it throws up sensational results like the Botham and Stokes comeback wins. Literally anything can happen out there. Good bowling and good batting is always rewarded.

It’s always been odd like this.

Southee despite his wicket of Root has still been pretty poor as an overall picture.

10.1 overs for 46, loads of buffet balls.

Technical flaw - his left arm is collapsing in his delivery stride.

Oh, well done Bairstow of Yorkshire! Making old Bluey proud.

Bairstow clearly not a flash in the pan for one innings and having a good knock again today. Well done YJB.

Bairstow needs to do a Botham 1981 rescue act here, and Jamie Overton meanwhile needs to channel his inner Graham Dilley.

I watched that innings.

Dilley was outscoring Botham to begin with, square-driving a tired Lillee for four after four.

Of course Chris Old had a swing too and got 29 in even time.

Fifty off the last five overs. This is mad. And :4our more takes Overton to 74.

Trent Boult not permitted by the umpires to bowl again yet due to time spent off the field…

shambles from NZ.

What a tactical embarrassment this has been from the Blackcaps team and Kane Williamson. My god.

I love this thread.

Goes from England collapsing to Wow what a come back....

Superb counter-attack this by Bairstow and Overton.

NZ look shellshocked.

Bairstow has done in again! Four centuries in his last six tests. What a career comeback!

Tenth test hundred, and his average heading the right way again.

Another incredible boundary that. These two are absolutely creaming it!

YJB has got another three years in tests. I reckon he can finish on 20+ test hundreds.

I can't think of any other country that writes as many fairytales at home as England.

They experiment more than most, take mad risks, rewrite rulebooks over and over, fall flat on their face in embarrassing heaps, get up again, dust themselves and then create the most magnificent moments one can imagine (or not) in both red ball and white ball cricket.

Compared to the insipid, soulless cricket most countries play in both formats, England are daring, refreshing, self aware and a full on entertainment package.

Credit to the modern game. Live on.

202* is England’s highest 7th wicket partnership in the history of Test cricket.

Lovely post! :)

Ingerlund rock! :125:

An astonishing session for England comes to an end. They were dead and buried, and now look. 209 partnership off 233 balls.

When in full flow, Bairstow is one of the best modern-day batters to watch.

Lovely strokes today.

England v New Zealand: Jonny Bairstow & Jamie Overton mount incredible recovery for hosts

Jonny Bairstow's remarkable unbeaten century and a superb 89 not out from debutant Jamie Overton kept England well in the third Test against New Zealand at Headingley.

On another thrilling day in England's new era, the hosts collapsed to 55-6 in reply to New Zealand's 329 on the second day.

But Bairstow and Overton combined for a rollicking unbroken stand of 209 to take England to 264-6 at the close, 65 behind.

Bairstow lit up his home ground with 130 not out, reaching his second hundred in as many innings, this time off 95 balls.

The partnership continued England's hair-raising approach under new captain Ben Stokes, a mindset which looked to have been given a reality check during the collapse.

Trent Boult bowled Alex Lees, Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley in a gorgeous opening spell and Joe Root nicked Tim Southee behind for five.

Stokes looked to counter-attack, only to feebly drive to mid-off for 18 and leave England in a perilous position.

Daryl Mitchell earlier recorded his third hundred in as many Tests for New Zealand, but the tourists left the field having felt the full force of England's wave of positivity.

A riotous England team then continued to entertain.

England showed how they want to play under Stokes and new coach Brendon McCullum in their thrilling final-day chase at Trent Bridge last week.

This, with Bairstow at the centre once more after his 77-ball century in Nottingham, was another emphatic marker.

It was cricket on fast-forward - both good and bad.

After Boult brilliantly exposed the technique of the top order, Stokes' decision to hit out looked to have laid bare the problems with their approach.

But, after a smart period of relative consolidation, Bairstow and Overton continued to attack in the final session.

They peppered the boundary, hitting 35 between them as England's scoring once again matching that of a white-ball contest at 5.40 per over.

The pair came together with England six down and 274 behind, but ended the day still with hope of the win that would seal a whitewashed 3-0 series victory.

:))) fair play - hes seeing it like a football

Another masterclass from Bairstow.

They went from 55/6 to 264/6 while playing aggressively. Superb.

Bairstow reaches 5000 test runs with 10 test hundreds.

Meanwhile, Trent Boult surpasses greats like Johnson and Zaheer in the leading wicket takers list as he has taken 316 test wickets.

While Pakistan lack batsmen with the brute power of a Jonny Bairstow, I think we can definitely learn something from this counterattacking approach.

Australia were so good during their glory days of digging themselves out of trouble through counterattacks. White ball cricket I know, but the late Andrew Symonds in the 2003 World Cup is a classic example. Pakistan however just go into their shells at 50-3 or 70-5.
