What's new

England at the cusp of a thrilling win as they need 119 more to win the 5th Test against India

India has issues with bowling in 4th innings overseas for some time now. Even they prefer to chase down totals...

Good innings Crawley, great partnership England.

Really poor day for India so far, but now that they have got the breakthrough I expect them to begin turning the screw.

You're saying that as if he's bowled 10 overs... he's bowled 4 overs. Obviously hiding atm, guarantee you if a wicket falls he'll come on :))
lol, he himself took the wicket.

He was not hiding. However him not bowling for so long was inexplicable.

Lees too is looking under all sorts of doubts against Shami.

Just hope the middle order carry on the good work from the opening stand

Agree

Pleased for the openers, they have taken a lot of stick over the last month but they really delivered under pressure there.

There is chatter going on. Will be a fascinating session after tea. Could get really spicy.

England needs to score at 4-5 rpo and maybe 6. Being defensive and defending against Bhumra, Shami will be counterproductive. Put them under pressure.

Main batsmen are Root, Bairstow, and Stokes. They may decide the game.

So, the opening pair has done well. England need 271 more runs.

Good on England batsmen for this refreshing approach towards test and ODI cricket, the only 2 formats which matter.

Test Cricket chase is not easy , it takes big effort , your best bowlers can be used for more overs , India still have the edge.

Lees looks natural hitter. Unlike Rory, Sibley or the 100 other openers they've tried since Cook, this guy seems natural strokemaker. Hope this guy gets a good run. He seems to belong in the international level.

On the match situation. This isn't a run rate game, so it is pointless to put fielders back. Just stick to plans, aggressive English batsmen = more chance to get out. If they still win, then hats off to them, but I'd be upset if we lost this test trying defensive approach.

Excellent job from the openers, shame one wicket went down just before tea. Can Eng keep the partnerships going or will they bottle it?

Don't want to be harsh on the guy because he has been excellent but he is way too loose imo.

Yes his defense is a bit suspect and he gets bowled too often. But that is something that can be corrected. Importantly he fits their brand of cricket and is natural at that.

You could sense Crawley was playing out of his character to match the scoring rate.

WICKET! Pope c Pant b Bumrah 0 – England 107-2

Bumrah again! From the first ball of the session, the seamer induces a little flirt from Pope and nicks off the England No 3 for a duck. The ball angles in and then nips away to brush the edge. India ecstatic, Kohli, as you would expect, fired up! The game has flipped!

A lot depends on Root here. He has to hold one end up and Lee's/Stokes/Bairstow will have to do bazball from the other end. Don't see England coming close to the target after losing Root.

Bumrah is world class, can’t keep him out of the game. Leading from the front as captain.

Yes, overdoing the theatrics.

Sledging and foul mouthing always don't work. He need to understand it might affect the focus of 10 other of his team mates. He is acting like playing in gully cricket

Great work from Shami & Jadeja especially the latter.

Root has to be there till the end.

Real batting starts now (Bairstow, Stokes, and Root).

An English win here is also good for Australia (WTC final).

There are only 3 teams that can realistically make it to WTC final - South Africa, Australia, and India.

Wonder why Pope is getting such a long run? He looks suspect against quality bowling.

With an opening combination not working (prior to this innings), Pope at 3 almost always will put England in a position where they are 3-down for not much.

Just love the soccer chants - 'Don't take me home, please don't take me home', 'Sweet Caroline' etc.

Great atmosphere in the stadium...Only Great Britain can produce such atmosphere for test cricket :boycott

Man, these England fans songs are so lame. Hey Jude

Bumrah sir overdoing it, next new ball should be for Siraj-Shami.

I think Root should be at #3.

Not sure why an inexperienced cricketer like Pope is at #3. It is an important position.

Sweet Caroline is one of the most annoying chants ever.

He understands no test cricket for next 8-9 months...so giving it everything. He will probably not play the T20s next.

I think Jadeja ploy is to irritate batsmen into playing some shot. Bairstow almost bowled himself trying to sweep.

Sanju Manju needs to zip it. He just criticizes Jadeja for no reason.

Cricviz rating the conditions now as the flattest it has been all match :facepalm

I think they are the best conditions of the match. The rain has gone away and the sun has broken through the remaining clouds. There doesn’t appear to be much happening off the pitch either — main threat is Bumrah with his movement through the air. The hardest thing about this chase is probably the scoreboard pressure, which is considerable.

It's credit to England's new approach towards test cricket that despite losing 3 wickets, they are still having equal chance to win this test against this total. In my view though, they are still favorites to square the series.

Why do teams blow reviews like that so cheaply on poor appeals? I don’t get it. Reviews can win (or lose) a team the match.

We have been historically poor, in fact very poor with DRS.

Yes. Reviews should only be used for close decisions.

Looks like many teams are yet to master using DRS.
