What's new

England beat India by 227 runs in the 1st Test in Chennai

I agree. We don’t want Stokes bowling himself into the ground and destroying his body like Flintoff did, but even 12 overs an innings across 2 spells would be very useful so everyone else can have a rest.
.

Aye, use him in short bursts as a stand-breaker. We are not going to get 18 overs a day out of him any more.

Very few top six batsmen are also front line bowlers. He is a very good test match #5 now.

Not gonna happen unless England wins all the tosses again. Kohli would be angry and would be coming for revenge with plenty of “Ben Stokes”.

Eng has got chance in pink ball test as well if they play jimmy, broad and archer together

If eng is able to draw the series against this juggernaut india,it would be some feat ,may be better than last series victory here imo

Not possible to have a upset in a Test, 5 days to long, either side can swing the momentum, more accurately England have bossed India from the toss

It’s possible. Yes tests is a 5 day game, but sometimes one innings (like Root’s) or one session (Woakes and Buttler against Pak last summer) can push u out of the game altogether

Tremendous performance by England. I guess, they are on track to repeat their 2012/13 heroics.

Jimmy is a legend. So much for being Clouderson, lol

English batsmen are equally vulnerable against movement and we also got pretty good bowlers to utilize the pink ball.

More wins than any Asian captain. 19 more than Imran.

Learn to respect greatness.

Greatness consisting of losing to South Africa in South Africa, getting smashed in New Zealand, and getting annihilated in England. Winning that one series in Australia with a B Australian side doesn’t make you a great when the next year a nobody captain with a nobody Indian team goes onto make history and beat a full strength Australian in Australia after the great kohlis India were bowled out for 36

Good luck with that claim maybe in another world.

Rohit is not a passenger in India. He just smoked South Africans in 2019 and he can do that again against England.
He was a complete passenger in this test at least and was one of the major reasons why we are losing this test this badly.

Mamoon is in a really tough spots today haha

The challenge is to successfully hype up England and at the same time ensure that questions aren’t raised regarding Kohli’s captaincy or the strength and legacy of this Indian team. :))

This Indian team has already left every other Asian team behind after what they did in Australia. They have nothing to prove anymore because they are already ahead of other great Asian sides of the past.

Sometimes, you have to credit the opposition for outplaying you, and England have proved that they are a world class side.

Also, anyone who thought Root did not belong in the top tier batsmen category got his answer as well.

Failure in one test is not gonna make anyone a passenger. And he got a pretty good ball in the second innings.

I wouldn't call a dominant display like this a upset, England have all bases covered to compete with India and so far it's being proved

On a positive note for test cricket, good to see some away wins recently in some challenging alien conditions

Ind in Australia
Windies in Bangladesh
England in India

Lmao couldn’t have said it any better he’s clueless right now he’s saying stuff like india won in Australia cause kohli and shastri were continuously inspiring them in their dreams.

You can say that, but I wouldn’t agree with you. India(like any other team) is a different beast at home, especially for a team like England. England has no proper spinner and quite a few players who’re not good players of spin bowling.

SENA teams need to win the toss in India and bat first. They’re not gonna bat fourth against the likes of Ashwin and win anything.

When England toured to India in 2012,they lost 3 out of 4 tosses but still they managed to win the series.

Next test
Rohit Out - KL Rahul In
Rahane Out - Pandya In
Nadeem Out - Kuldeep In

Pant to open with Gill

:inti

poor guy is probably glitching hahah

Man did you see his post on the pak vs rsa series he said no team deserved to win I was just like what on earth is this he literally said neither team should have won like whatttt ?!;?:?):):):

So if England win the toss in the next game are you throwing the towel in lol
Lol. Why would I throw in the towel? I didn’t say India can’t win chasing in India. I would back them to win. They would be hostile and coming for England’s jugular .

What a mauling, excellent performance by England, 10 out of 10, Chris silverwood needs a mention here, the mindset of the England side has changed

Good ball? Indian batsmen, born and brought up on staple diet of spinners should be able to counter that, no?

Congrats England.

Well done!!

All round performance. Didn’t even need a breaking 56) day pitch to get the win. The pacers did the job.

Good Lord.

England have gone 0-1 up in India. I never would have thought this.

Sibley is improving. Root is in God Mode. Stokes comes off a five month layoff with a telling contribution. All the bowlers chip in, especially the inexperienced spinners.

Root goes equal to Vaughan in test wins as skipper.

England can get better with Crawley and Foakes returning. They will need to be as India wil come back hard.

In that series, most senior Indian batsmen were on their last legs and probably finished. And also they were after that infamous 8-0 drubbing. We have better bowlers and better batsmen now.

Should replace Lawrence with Moeen Ali and it will become pretty hard for India in the next test. :inti

Absolutely thrashed India, have to give credit to England for that, it ain’t an easy thing to do in India against India. But I don’t see them even drawing one more match. I think they gave everything they had for this match

Which Indian batsmen? Peak Fab five have lost their wickets against Michael Clarke in India. Subcontinental pitches behaves on their own on fourth and fifth days.
Even then, how can you discount a batsmen who scored runs for fun in India hardly one year back as a passenger just because of a single test? And South Africans had better spinners.

The reckless shot selections from the Indian batsmen in the first innings has cost us the match. Rohit and especially Rahane should be given a stern message. Unfortunately, they are undroppable. There is a reason why Rohit is not a regular in our test team. And, Rahane performs once a year. Kuldeep over Nadeem any day.

congratulations england. Big win this , havent seen india dominated in india like this for a long time.

Congrats England for a deserving win. You completely outplayed India in all departments.

This last day pitch wasn’t that bad tbh. No crazy turn or ball randomly jumping out of the roughy

It was a one sided match from Day 1. Not boring but pretty one sided.

India needs to pull up their socks to level the series. And tbh Kohli looks washed up. His batting technique has slightly changed for the worse. Looks a bit loose, something i never thought he would become as a batsman.

Hugely impressive win but not an upset at all.
England have consistently thrashed india for a while now.

I think Moeen will get more runs in India than Lawrence. But Lawrence is only keeping Crawley’s seat warm. I doubt Moeen would want to plug the #3 hole.

One of England's greatest ever away Test victories. A fantastic effort.

England coasted to a resounding 227-run victory against India in the first Test in Chennai, with Jimmy Anderson reverse swinging his way to 611 wickets.

The victory lifted England all the way to the top of the ICC World Test Championship standings, and if they can win two more matches matches in this series, they can seal their qualification for the marquee final against New Zealand at Lord’s.

India too will need to win two matches in the series to seal their qualification, making for a potentially exhilarating rest of the series.

The day began with India resuming on 39/1, with Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara in the middle. It wasn’t an ideal start for India, with Pujara walking back shortly into the morning, having been confounded by Jack Leach. From wide of the crease, Leach got one to pitch on middle and spit away, and Pujara could do little but fend at it.

In came captain Virat Kohli to join Gill, and the duo went about pushing back. Gill looked good for as long as he was there, notching up a third half-century in a fledgling career. He expertly dealt with the spinners, using his feet to disturb their lengths, but he was no match for Anderson, who had started reversing the ball.

Shortly after bringing up his half-century, Anderson had Gill cleaned up with a beauty. He pitched it in full, and angled it in with the reverse, completely beating Gill’s defences and uprooting the stumps. Anderson was just getting started. Three balls later, he meted out the exact same treatment to Ajinkya Rahane, who had narrowly survived an lbw appeal on the previous delivery, and India were 92/4.

Rishabh Pant, who had scored a fine counter-attacking 91 in the first-innings, couldn’t repeat the feat this time around, becoming Anderson’s third wicket when he tamely pushed one to short cover. Washington Sundar, who scored 85* in the first-innings, scored nought this time around, Dom Bess joining the party to having him caught behind. India were 117/6, with their hopes more or less snuffed out.

Ashwin and Kohli then pushed back. Ashwin bravely faced up to a short-ball attack from the Indian pacers, taking a few blows, even as Kohli showcased his class in a few strokes, in between some solid defensive play. They put up a fighting 54-run stand, during the course of which Kohli brought up his 24th half-century in Test cricket.

India were always fighting against the tide, though, and the excellent Leach broke the stand, doing Ashwin in with extra bounce. It wasn’t long before Ben Stokes got one on a crack, and Kohli’s stumps were uprooted as it kept low. Kohli looked at the pitch in frustration, and with the Indian captain gone for 72, it wasn’t long before England sealed victory.

Root really won this game with good support from Bess and Anderson. Gotta give it to him.. I was starting to think he undeservedly got lumped in with the top 4/5 batsmen in the world but he proved it in this test.

Exactly.

We lost it there.

Unbelievable that we gave bess 4 wickets on a plattter.

Kohli didn't bat even once since 36 AO and that was what 2 months ago? Ideally, he should've played in Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy (albeit T20s only). But no, that would have seriously hurt his elephant sized ego to play against mere mortals.

Credit where it’s due Bess bowled really really well and took full advantage of the turn and bounce. Some of his deliveries were unplayable and he set them up well.

I am talking about bess in first innings.

How do you justify getting 70 for 4 on that patta on day 3?

Pujara’s was a freak dismissal. But the way he got Kohli, that was a great setup. Same with Pant.. you know how he plays and he bowled him wide and asked him to fetch it. I think considering the scoreboard pressure and all he took full advantage. India’s batting is great but small lapses happen. Still to simply Pooh Pooh the bowling and blame it on poor batting is not sporting. Bess bowled really well.

I cant say things against my belief just to look sporting.

That would be lying to myself.

Kohli was a good wicket.

Rajane, pujara and pant were gifts.

Pant strategy was known but that doesnt make it great bowling. Its just smart thinking and usual brainfade from pant which he had curbed in last gabba innings.

I dont mean to undermine bess and i do hope he goes on to do great things.... But those wickets in the first innings were gifts.

If you cant score in that patta in first innings, you dont deserve to win..

And thats exactly what happened.

If we cant call spade a spade... Then whats the point...

If an aussie attacks starc being useless and paine captaining poorly (atrocious captaincy by the way), that doesnt undermine indian achievement.

But we cant ignore facts just to look fair.

This proves that India needs those rank turners to be invincible at home other wise if they lose the toss they can be in trouble. They lost this test match with two of the most inexperienced spin bowlers on show.

Simple reason why they keep demanding rank turners. I said on the first day this test pitch resembled more like before Dhoni / Kohli era subcontinental pitch and we have seen the result at no point England was in danger of scoring big in the first innings. Doctoring pitches in Dhoni era to begin with and continuation in Kholi era have made India invincible. It is still a big achievement so not trying to undermine India's achievement at home it clear other boards are trying to copy the foot print very recently Pakistan again SA where Rawalpindi pitch always favor the fast bowlers usually.

Congratulations England...well deserved Root Anderson Leach Bess Sibley done well
