What's new

England beat Sri Lanka by 9 wickets in the second Test

The empire on which the sun never sets. :nasser

What a formidable unit England is developing into.

Best test team in the world in my opinion, ahead of Australia because they compete better in Asia.

It sets in the UAE :inti

No doubt about that. They are playing an attacking and attractive brand of cricket too. The next Ashes in AUS is going to be a ripper.

Someone's gotta teach Matthews how to use these review things...

Someone's gotto teach them how to hold the bat. Looks like SL is regressing big time and will be a minnow if they don't arrest this decline.

The hyperbole is strong on this one.

What an exciting, mouth watering and evenly poised contest it has been so far in this serves.

Test Cricket at it's best.

Is there any point of a 3rd test?

They should all have a week off instead and go on holiday to the south of France. Get some sun and some nice sparkling wine. Total mismatch.

Bullying teams at their weak point in their home. Rubbish team who get lucky once in a while.

Agreed. I'm not even sure how competitive the odis will be

Can any of the Test purists only say this is good cricket?

When is the last time there's been a series that hasn't been seriously one-sided?

How long can you guys keep claiming this is great cricket simply because it's a 5 day game?

Seriously awful, uncompetitive games.

Same folks who were bashing the world t20 which imo was one of the best tournaments after the 2007 edition.

Test cricket should be allowed to come to a natural end.

Good Test Cricket is an oxymoron. Now it has become a format where most of the matches are one sided with home teams bullying their guests.

It's time to stop wasting the revenue generated by T20s on keeping Test Cricket alive.

In England the limited overs internationals are not subsiding the tests.

Honestly seems as though big 3 will dominate cricket for a while. Us Sri Lanka and West indies have declined massively and will be a while before were back. South Africa is an aging side difficult to see them replacing those aging players. New Zealand don't have the finances and resources to surpass the big 3. Bangladesh will struggle to compete with big 3 also

Your primitive brain just don't understand the subtle intricacies of this great contest. Especially the complexities and strategical nuances in Rangana Herath's fielding.

England vs Australia last year (3-2), England vs Pakistan (0-2 but very close to being 1-1), England vs SA (1-2)......

SL are in a bit of a slump after their two top batters retired but I'm sure Pakistan will put up more of a fight than this.

The advent of T20 has basically destroyed batsmen the world over. Smacking a few sixes infront of a bunch of kids is good enough for a player to be labelled "the best going around", "best in the business" etc.

I see no one currently besides YK and Amla who is good enough to grind out a brilliant hundred in difficult conditions. Not many have the temperament to play long innings', score daddy hundreds or carry the bat even. Test cricket will probably end up dying since there won't be batsmen left good enough to play it anymore. Quite sad.

Dude Pakistan is number 3 in test Cricket. They are fine.

What a Comeback test for Chris Woakes. Superb allround performance.

Excellent knock by Moeen Ali when the expectations were low of him he punched 155* which may very well be match winning Hundred.

SL reeling at 91-8

I think in UAE we will do well for a long time. But next step in tests for us to compete away from home, we shall this year if we can.

What is up with Finns pace? Him bowling this medium pace isn't really working for him. He could run through them if he quickens up his pace.England think tank must be instructing him to bowl this way because of conditions

He has never been very quick. He's FM, tall and gets a lot of bounce, like a young Garner.

They clearly play better when they don't go into their shell and look to block everything.

We wont roll over as easily. This has been an annihilation.

Only reason for that would be is we're not playing at Headingly and Durham. SL batsmen are technically superior than ours but they don't have the discipline of Misbah, Younis, Azhar, Asad. Unfortunately discipline alone won't achieve jack in England. Your technique has to be able to cope with the movement and strokeplay to counter. Azhar and Asad have the technique but lack the strokeplay whereas Misbah and Younis fail in both departments.

I think he lost a bit of pace when they remodelled his action. Two much swivel in his delivery stride? It looks wrong to me.

Yes you might be right. England should have made sure his pace wasn't affected they don't have another bowler like that.

James Anderson, take a bow. Right-handed Wasim Akram.

Two special deliveries to dislodge two tough cookies. :nasser

How come England won in India and SA then? How come NZ halved a series here, and SL won their previous English series?

It is no wonder that SL, shorn of their two best batters, is struggling in England in May. We should not be playing tests now. They used to start in June, and next year that will be restored. Back to just five or six tests in the summer, as it was and as it should be.

I don't think SL batsmen are better technically than Asad Technique himself :)

And you wanted him to take the new ball and condemn Jimmy to first change. You and James both!

Finn isn't there yet, and to be honest, I prefer Wood over Finn when fit for most conditions and Finn when it's bouncy.

He seems to have gone backwards, but maybe these slow low decks are reducing his effectiveness. He still has a significantly better SR than the others.

Younis hasn't grinded a hundred in difficult conditions/outside his comfort-zone for 10 years now.

Also, you are underrating performances of the younger generation (Root, Smith, Kohli, Williamson) in Tests.

Amla is a wonderful Test batsman though.

Good fight shown by the Lankans yesterday - at last - but this will be over by lunch probably.

Hope srilanka scores 500 but this is hardly possible I think but they have shown some good fight

Siriwardana :out seriously we are just hoping that England will play second innings??

Robert, any reason why tests are starting early?
Is it because ECB wants to squeeze in two series every sumer?

Siriwardana with a loose shot, ball was pitched fuller with bit of late movement. Made a decent start, needed him to kick on especially with this SL tail.

I think starting this early is fine personally, when the bidding system gets removed/revamped in the very near future then it'd be smart to host these earlier tests down South (where I've been it's generally been touching 20 degrees alot of days of these first 2 tests).

Next years only different because of the champions trophy so we're getting the ODIs in early but it's still down to be 7 tests.

Finn is really off form if he carries on like this and plays against us surely we will be able to deal with him

If he keeps going like this with both Stokes and Wood returning from injury/surgery shortly I can't seem him being near the team. May even be our for the last test of this series.

I think he will play the last game it's on his home ground they will hope he can produce there

We always bring out of form players back in form. Won't be surprised if Finn destroys us.

I think he should quicken his pace. If he bowls these medium paces team man and misbah shouldn't have any problems. But we have a habit of putting players back in form and making mediocre players look good

Cook standing at silly point with no helmet against ECB regulations, will be interesting to see if anything comes from it.

On another note though Cook will now most likely make the 10,000 in front of a few hundred people on a cold day in Durham compared to a packed house of 25,000 at Lords!

One shouldn't doubt on potential on Finn.He is a fabulous bowler and it can be argued that he is their best bowler potentially even though he has been off colour in this series. He did well in SA and troubled AB and Amla.

A lead of 100 and we'll be entering who knows what's gonna happen next territory.

Lol at the small contingent of Sri Lankan hardcores there.

Fair play to them, Sri Lanka's best session on this tour.

Well played Sri Lanka.

I think they would need bare minimum 150 lead, which is still a long way away, to cause any alarms in the England dressing room.

If they still had Murali, then any lead over 50 would be interesting, but he retired.

Always knew Chandimal is a good batsmen. Quality knock from him.He does well outside Asia.

SL should think to play whole day and they will get to 200 lead. OFcourse not easy to do that.
