England tour of Bangladesh 2023

Great win Bangladesh

Pretty much full strength England

Yes! Get in! Shakib hits the winning runs. Bangladesh win the 1st T20. Beaten the world champions England by 6wickets and 2overs remaining, with ease.

Two new comers one debutant and one coming back after 8years, looked good and positive. Talukdar was hitting the England pacers in well. Tawhid was aggressive hit a nice 6 off Rashid. Both will learn a lot playing more.

No idea why Hasan Mahmud didnt play ODI’s instead of Mustafiz. H Mahmud is a good disciplined line and length bowler, has decent pace.

1st T20, Bangladesh v England: Chattogram
England 156-6 (20 overs): Buttler 67 (42); Mahmud 2-26
Bangladesh 158-4 (18 overs): Shanto 51 (30); Wood 1-24
Bangladesh won by six wickets

Bangladesh beat world champions England comfortably by six wickets in the first T20 international in Chattogram.

Opener Najmul Hossain Shanto struck an impressive 51 from 30 balls as the Tigers reached their target of 157 with two overs to spare.

Shanto added 65 for the third wicket with debutant Towhid Hridoy, who made 24, as the hosts adapted better to a slow, sluggish pitch.

The second of three T20s match takes place on Sunday in Mirpur.

It is Bangladesh's first win over England in a T20 match, though it is only the second time the teams have met in the format.

England were on course for a huge total as captain Jos Buttler and Phil Salt raced to 80 after 10 overs, but Bangladesh's seamers fought back at the end, conceding just 21 runs from the final four overs.

Buttler made a dynamic 67 from 42 balls after being dropped by Shakib Al Hasan on 19, but when he and Ben Duckett fell in consecutive balls, England struggled to make the most of their aggressive start.

Seamer Hasan Mahmud led the attack with 2-26 from his four overs, including the key scalp of Buttler.

In reply, Bangladesh also made the most of the six-over powerplay to attack England's seamers, reaching 54-2.

England's seamers struggled to adapt to the slow pitch and Shanto capitalised, striking four consecutive boundaries from Mark Wood's first over.

Captain Shakib then calmly used his experience to steer his side to victory and finish unbeaten on 34.

The opening 10 overs of England's innings were typical of the white-ball side's approach: capitalise on the powerplay, taking the attacking option first, and put the bowlers under pressure.

Buttler and Salt were cruising and the tourists looked set for a competitive score of more than 170, with Bangladesh's body language showing signs of despondency after Shakib dropped a simple chance and the England captain sought to make the most of it.

But their seamers held their nerve and mixed up their pace brilliantly at the end to deceive England as they lost four wickets for 11 runs in 20 balls.

England struggled to adapt against the slower bowling, continuing with their trademark aggression and paying for it. Buttler, Dawid Malan and Sam Curran were all caught on the boundary as the pressure built.

Bangladesh's chase then followed a similar trend as set batters Shanto and Hridoy fell in quick succession. But England's bowlers were unable to adapt quickly enough as the batters looked more comfortable against the pace-heavy attack.

Their side looked bowler-heavy with five seamers and two spinners, which proved ineffective as Bangladesh proved their smartness and adaptability to pace the chase perfectly.

'We were 20 runs short' - reaction
Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan: "The way we approached the game was fantastic. We were under the pump when bowling but didn't panic, and stuck to our plans. Apart from my dropped catch we did really well in the field.

"Hopefully we can build on this win in the next few games against England."

England captain Jos Buttler: "I thought they finished their innings well with the ball. We were probably 20 short from where we wanted to be. We didn't quite make enough runs and couldn't save that in the field.

"The pitch played as expected with low bounce but was consistent. The extra runs would have made it easier. Bangladesh took the game on and that put us under pressure."

I completely forgot about this game. Just opened Cricinfo and saw the scorecard.

Well done, BD.

England in dire straits here, though the pitch does look quite challenging, so their bowlers might bring them back into it

ENG 117 (20) CRR: 5.85

Not a common sight for England, couldn't even hit run a ball.

Bangladesh hammer England again to seal the series victory. After a convicing win in the first match, they win by four wickets today.

It was a bit tense toward the end but Jordan's over was expensive. He went for three boundaries as Bangladesh won the match with an over to spare.

Shanto hit an important 46 not out and Taskin hit two boundaries to see his side home.

2nd T20, Bangladesh v England: Mirpur
England 117 (20 overs): Duckett 28 (28); Mehedi 4-12
Bangladesh 120-6 (18.5 overs): Shanto 46 (47); Archer 3-13
Bangladesh won by four wickets

Bangladesh clinched series victory with a four-wicket win over England in the second T20 international in Mirpur.

England were 50-1 after six overs, but a flurry of wickets followed on a difficult, turning pitch and the tourists were bowled out for 117 in the 20th over.

Ben Duckett top-scored with 28 from as many balls in the middle order, but he saw four partners fall to Mehedi Hasan who finished with figures of 4-12.

Bangladesh made steady progress in their chase, with Najmul Hossain Shanto's unbeaten 46 seeing them home with seven balls left.

Jofra Archer took two wickets late on, finishing with an impressive 3-13, to squeeze the game but the hosts took 15 from the first five balls of the penultimate over bowled by Chris Jordan.

The series concludes with a final dead rubber at the same ground on Tuesday.

England struggle with the bat

Playing in their first series in this format since winning the T20 World Cup in November, England were already handling the absences of a number of key batters, including Ben Stokes, Alex Hales and Will Jacks.

After defeat in Thursday's opening match of the series, captain Jos Buttler chose to make further changes to the winning formula, dropping himself to four and promoting Dawid Malan to open, while also offering a debut to 18-year-old prodigy Rehan Ahmed.

The move did not pay off, as Malan fell cheaply to Taskin Ahmed while Buttler was bowled by Hasan Mahmud's yorker for just four, as England were reduced to 57-4 after nine overs.

In successive matches Duckett has offered some resistance as others fell around him, but failed to kick on after reaching his 20s.

He and Sam Curran offered a largely boundary-less rebuild in the middle overs with a partnership of 34, handling a difficult pitch and some excellent bowling from Mehedi, who claimed Curran as one of two stumping victims.

England again seemed a batter light, with Chris Woakes coming in at seven, and lost three wickets in the final over as Archer and debutant Ahmed suffered embarrassing run outs.

Impressive Shanto sees Tigers home

England were probably around 20 runs short with the bat.

After the first seven overs there was excessive turn across the remainder of the match, which meant Bangladesh were never able to break the shackles in pursuit.

England will take solace from the bowling of Archer, who continues a successful return to the side after a lengthy period on the sidelines and was recorded at speeds of 93mph.

Having taken the wicket of opener Rony Talukdar, Archer returned to force Mehedi into a mistimed pull on 20 before splaying the stumps of Afif Hossain in the 18th over to offer England a glimpse of victory.

Thirteen runs were needed from 12 balls and Buttler turned to seamer Chris Jordan for the first time.

Shanto, who came in at three and anchored the innings, hit his first delivery for four, before Taskin struck the veteran seamer for successive boundaries to secure a comfortable victory.

England have not been at their best on and off the field during a disappointing T20I series against Bangladesh, according to Nasser Hussain.

Jos Buttler's side slumped to a four-wicket loss in the second T20I on Sunday as the hosts sealed a series victory with one game to spare.

In both of the T20I matches so far, England failed to make a big score when batting first, and Hussain said following the second match that England should have added an extra batter to their squad after Will Jacks was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Jacks himself was a late addition to the tour after Tom Abell pulled out before the first ODI with an injury.

Highlights of England against Bangladesh in the second T20 international from the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Mirpur
The withdrawal of Jacks meant England were a batter short and did not draft anyone in as a replacement, with Sam Curran and Moeen Ali promoted up the order.

Hussain felt this was a poor decision by England, saying: "The selectors have a difficult juggling act. They've got one of the great series coming up in the Ashes. So, they are trying to rest their Test match players.

"They've got white-ball players playing Test match cricket. They've got lads that are injured. They've got the county season starting soon.

"But we've got 18 counties, if we can't put an extra batter or two on the ground in Bangladesh, if it means flying (Ollie) Pope or (Zak) Crawley, who I think will be a good white-ball cricketer, I don't think it's good enough to say we are one batter short.

"We are the England cricket team, it's an important tour. We saw what it meant to Bangladesh, and we have to treat it with the same respect. They didn't have the right balance of squad."

Pope, who has returned to England after touring New Zealand with the red-ball side, was on punditry duties for the second T20I and said he would have "absolutely" answered the call from Buttler if it had come.

Hussain said he understood the thinking behind the decision, adding: "I can guess there are a few England cricketers who play for counties that would like to be playing out there. The players that will be there for the next World Cup get the extra responsibility, so I get a little bit of the thinking.

"Curran, Woakes, Jordan, Ahmed got a bat on difficult conditions on a difficult pitch."

England captain Buttler said he is comfortable with the squad picked for the series, despite defeats in the opening two T20Is of the tour.

Buttler highlighted the absence of several players, including Alex Hales, Sam Billings and Liam Dawson, who were given special dispensation by England to prioritise the ongoing Pakistan Super League.

"It's a different balance and a different feel to the team," said Buttler. "We wanted to give exposure to guys especially who, in these conditions, will also probably play a part in the 50-over World Cup.

"It felt like a great chance to expose the all-rounders' batting, maybe one spot higher than in our normal team.

"The way cricket is at the moment, there's a few players who've opted not to be here anyway for various reasons, so it felt like instead of calling someone else up, try to use the guys who would be exposed to these conditions in the 50-over World Cup as well."

Disappointing day for Buttler

One of the surprise decisions of the second T20I was Dawid Malan opening the batting with Phil Salt and Buttler instead coming in at number four.

Moeen was also promoted up the order to number three, as England reacted to a middle-order collapse in the first match.

Hussain and Pope felt the decision was taken for England's captain to anchor the innings, but the experiment failed as the visitors were bowled out for 117 in tough conditions.

Buttler said after the game: "We've obviously got a bank of left-handers in our middle order, it was just an opportunity to change that up a little bit.

"I'm very comfortable batting anywhere in the order, I've spent a hell of a lot of my career as a middle-order player as well. I just felt like it would be an opportunity to try something different.

"The opportunity for Mo to go in at number three, something he's done successfully for Chennai Super Kings (in the Indian Premier League). There's still some good strengths there as well."

Despite defending a low score, England took the game deep and were in with a chance of sealing a dramatic victory with 13 needed from the final two overs.

But Buttler opted to give Chris Jordan his first over, rather than turning to Curran or Rehan Ahmed, who had already bowled in the innings.

The decision proved costly as Bangladesh hit three boundaries in Jordan's over to win the match.

"Fair play to Bangladesh. 2-0 against the world champions, and they've played some terrific cricket. Shanto is going to be a star in the making. They need to start finding fine cricketers. That's a big win for them," Hussain said.

"England haven't been at their best on or off the field. Buttler hasn't had his best day today. He should've opened the batting, some of the fields he set and asking someone to bowl their only over in the 19th over is a big, big risk," he said.

"Rashid bowled okay. Sometimes when he has been to the subcontinent he bowls a certain pace. I thought they could've attacked a bit more. You have got to attack more with your best spinner."

It was not all negative for England, with Buttler's side bowling brilliantly despite defending a low score.

Curran again made an early breakthrough, but it was Jofra Archer who was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 3-13 from four overs.

He has regularly challenged the batters, bowling over 90mph at times, and nearly sparked a dramatic win when he took two wickets in two overs toward the end of the innings.

It took Rehan Ahmed just two deliveries to take his first international T20I wicket after Towhid Hridoy cut straight to Chris Woakes
Hussain said Archer's performance was a good sign, but he will continue to have to be managed with a hectic schedule this year.

"Archer's spell with the new ball and his spell later were real positive signs that he is trusting his body. It will be interesting to see if he plays on Tuesday," he said.

"The challenge for English cricket is he is going to be wanted by everyone. Buttler and (Matthew) Mott will want him for the World Cup. (Ben) Stokes and (Brendon) McCullum will want him for the Ashes.

"It is a massive step up to bowl red ball, having not done that for a couple of years. Anything in red-ball cricket will be a bonus."

Another positive was Rehan Ahmed, who made his T20I debut and took his first wicket with his second ball.

Hussain believes the teenager has "a real future" ahead of him, after taking nine wickets in his first three internationals across all formats.

"Super three months for him. On Test debut, he got a five-for, with some great scenes in Pakistan. He will get better wickets, a little drag down, that's how leg-spinners get wickets," Hussain said.

"He has got a future and will be on the radar for the 50-over World Cup. England are a very good tournament side. They've become almost the polar opposite of India, who are a very good bilateral side. They'll get the gang back together, but just pay attention on that journey to the World Cup."

Captain Jos Buttler defended England's selections after defeat in the second T20 condemned them to a series loss against Bangladesh.

England's batting struggled again on Sunday as they were bowled out for 117 in the hosts' four-wicket win.

England lost Tom Abell and Will Jacks to injury before the series but did not call-up replacements.

Buttler said England wanted players to get "exposure" before the 50-over World Cup later this year.

"It's a different balance and a different feel to the team," he said.

"We wanted to give exposure to guys especially who, in these conditions, will also probably play a part in the 50-over World Cup.

"It felt like a great chance to expose the all-rounders' batting, maybe one spot higher than in our normal team."

On another spinning surface, similar to the conditions England will likely find in the longer white-ball format in India in October and November, England collapsed from 50-1 after six overs to be dismissed off the final ball of the innings in Mirpur.

Moeen Ali hit 15 at number three while Sam Curran scored 12 at six, both higher in the order than they batted in England's T20 World Cup win before Christmas.

From their victorious squad England are also without Ben Stokes and Harry Brook because of Test commitments, plus opener Alex Hales who has opted to fulfil his Pakistan Super League contract.

"The way cricket is at the moment, there's a few players who've opted not to be here anyway for various reasons, so it felt like instead of calling someone else up, try to use the guys who would be exposed to these conditions in the 50-over World Cup as well."

The T20 series concludes with the third match on Tuesday, also in Mirpur.

Bangladesh really played well . Played with passion and heart.

Shakib led from the front.

This is the first bilateral series win for BD against England. Ever.

I didn't expect BD to win the T20 series (a format they are very weak at). So, well done.

Well done BD! And congtratulations to the BD fans here :)

Great series win against the WCs in the format, I feel BD should have win the ODI series as well if not for Adil Rashid, perhaps that’ll trigger a new thinking about legspin in the country (has been institutionally negliged on purpose).

Third T20I today.

The whitewash is on.

Incredible stuff, Bangladesh have whitewashed World Champions England in T20s!!! Well done Bangla Boys.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain on Sky Sports: "The days of where we vilify people for not playing England are over. The goalpost have changed. All the guys playing franchise cricket are getting better at cricket because the standards are so high. It's a difficult thing to manage. England were one batter short on this trip."

Congratulations Bangladesh whitewashing England the World Champions, 3-0.

Liton Das batted well final match, finally back to form. Another good knock by Shanto and was brilliant in the t20 series.

Excellent team effort. Everyone did their part. Shakib captained the team well.

England stumbled to a 16-run defeat in the final T20 as Bangladesh completed a 3-0 series clean sweep.

Chasing 159, England were in control at 100-1 as Jos Buttler and Dawid Malan added 95 for the second wicket in Mirpur.

But Bangladesh fought back when the pair fell in consecutive balls in the 14th over.

The pressure built on England's middle order and they finished on 142-6 after losing 5-28 in the space of 35 balls.

Bangladesh's 158-2 was set up by opener Litton Das' explosive 73 from 57 balls and Najmul Hossain's Shanto's 47 not out from 36.

Ben Duckett dropped Das on 51 and Rehan Ahmed dropped a simple chance from Rony Talukdar on 17.

But England salvaged some pride at the death as Sam Curran and Chris Jordan restricted Bangladesh's scoring, conceding only 27 runs from the final five overs.

Despite losing Phil Salt for a duck in the first over, Malan and Buttler led an impressive counter-attack on a slow, wearing pitch.

But Mustafizur Rahman changed the game when Malan was caught behind for 53 and Buttler was sensationally run out for 40 by Mehidy Hasan.

The series concludes England's winter and the white-ball side will not be in action again until August.

Nazmul Hossain Shanto - player of the series. Deserved it, easily. He was superb, and the strike rate was good.

I criticised him a lot for slow SR in the past. He did get a lot of backing from selectors. I did mention in one of the post on this thread how BD invested in Shanto a lot, given him so many chances and where very patient with him. so he has to start paying BD back and he has done this t20 series against England and improved his strike rate massively. Well done!

A lot of credit goes to the T20 coach, Sridharan Sriram. He took some tough decisions such as dropping Tamim, Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah from the T20 team and effectively forcing them into retirement from the format. Hopefully this is the dawn of Bangladesh starting to compete consistently in T20s.

Crazy I didn’t even know he was BD coach , god damn we got stuck with Dravid

Who was the last leg spinner from BD, Alok Kapali 15 years back?

England looked a listless T20 side in the run up to the previous World T20 too except for their last 2 bilaterals when they beat Pakistan and Australia, reintegrated Hales and got Brook in etc.

I think they should be more concerned with their ODI form and the World Cup coming up.

Bangladesh's maiden bilateral series win against England is a result of sheer will to do well, informed T20 captain Shakib al Hasan.

Hosts Bangladesh Tuesday recorded history after they whitewashed visitors England 3-0 in the Twenty20 international series.

Bangladesh were clinical when they clinched the first win of the series in Chittagong last week, by six wickets.

They carried the momentum to Dhaka and first sealed the series victory winning the second T20I by four wickets.

The third and final game at one point looked to go England's way chasing 159 runs.

However, two quick wickets – first of opener Dawid Malan by Mustafizur Rahman and then Jos Buttler's runout by Mehedi Hasan Miraz – shook up the game in Bangladesh's favor.

Bangladesh from there pressed on the pressure and bagged a 16-run victory, accomplishing the whitewash against the reigning 50-over and T20I world champions.

Earlier Bangladesh posted a competitive total losing two wickets, riding on 57-ball 73 by Liton Das and Nazmul Hossain Shanto's 47 off 36.

“We never allowed pressure to creep in the dressing room by thinking that we have to win the series. We simply wanted to play good cricket. We tried to put out the best with the bat in all three games. We were brilliant with the ball and fielding I think. We have been able to restrict the opponents bowling in good areas and saving four, eight, 10 runs to make the difference,” said Shakib to the media following the game at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

Shanto topped the Bangladesh batters in the series scoring 144 runs with 144 strike rate – 51 in the first game, a 47 not out in the second and an unbeaten 47 in the third.

With the cherry, right-arm spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz shared top place with England fast bowler Jofra Archer – both picked four wickets apiece.

Shakib said the performers in the recent Bangladesh Premier League T20 have performed well in the T20 series against England too, to add to the home advantage factor.

Bangladesh team also took advantage of England's troubles with the bench strength.

England had limitations in their squad with only 12 players to choose from.

They did not have replacement to Will Jacks while Reece Topley, according to media reports, struggled with a niggle and left them without enough batting options.

“The players in this series have all performed in BPL. It had a positive impact on the team given it was not very long we played the tournament. The batters in this Bangladesh squad were top scorers in BPL, the bowlers were among the highest wicket takers. So there was the needed confidence,” said Shakib.

“Also we played the series at home, so that was an advantage too. We knew England are short of batters and we wanted to capitalize on that. We knew we have the games in control whenever they lost three or four wickets,” the ace Bangladesh all-rounder added.

The series was Bangladesh's first since the Asia Cup T20 and T20 World Cup last year.

Bangladesh's performance at the Asia Cup in United Arab Emirates was below par while in the T20 World Cup in Australia, they were decent having won two games, but missed out on the opportunity to make it to the semi-finals.

There is a wide discussion if Shakib has made change in his approach with the captaincy.

“I don't think there has been any major difference. I started T20I captaincy with the Asia Cup [last year], We might not have won any games but we played some good cricket there. And it was unfortunate for us that we could not play the semis in the T20 World Cup. We could have played the semis by winning just one game. We had that opportunity,” said Shakib.

England's 3-0 defeat by Bangladesh in the Twenty20 series has been an "eye-opener", according to white-ball coach Matthew Mott.

Bangladesh are ranked ninth in the world while England are T20 world champions.

England won the preceding one-day international series 2-1, but struggled to adapt to conditions in the shorter format.

"It hurts, losing 3-0," said Mott, who was named white-ball coach in May 2022.

"We were really proud of our one-day win because that was a massive effort. But to finish the way we did today will leave a bit of a sour taste in the mouth."

In Bangladesh's 16-run win in Mirpur, the hosts successfully defended 159 on a slow, wearing pitch.

England reached 142-6 in reply but were left to rue a sloppy fielding performance in which they dropped two catches, while a series of misfields cost boundaries.

"Our first 15 overs in the field was nowhere near the level we expect," said Mott, whose side next play at the end of August against New Zealand at home.

"We've been up against a very strong home team, but we were up for it today - everyone was up and about. But for whatever reason we just couldn't gather the ball either in the air or along the ground."

England's side was depleted, particularly in the batting line-up, with key players missing for various reasons including Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone and Alex Hales.

After defeat in the second T20, captain Jos Buttler said it was important for other players to get "exposure" in the white-ball side before the 50-over World Cup in October, which Mott emphasised.

"There's been a realisation that we will be better off from putting these batters out there in pressure situations," Mott said.

"You only learn from your mistakes and by getting those opportunities, and I am confident that we made the right decisions."

Apologies if this has already been said, but:

BangBall > BazBall.

Couldn’t resist.

Congrats guys. Why is there no Test match? would be interesting to see their theory on these wickets. It might backfire.

I think they should be more concerned with their ODI form and the World Cup coming up.

Their performance depends on venues. Australia/England probably suit them as guys like Hales was a regular in BBL. In Subcontinent winning is not that easy.

Would've loved to see a Test series also. But, there were no WTC games scheduled between BD and England.

I think England may lose in Mirpur if they play a Test there. Bazball tactic is unlikely to work in Mirpur.

They looked alright in the UAE 2 years back. They have lost T20I series at home to India and SA. They got the right players in - Hales inclusion was a brilliant move - at the right time for the last T20.

The current England white ball sides simply don't have that aura of invincibility they had under Morgan in 2016-2019.

They are still a strong side but they've been beaten quite often by competitive sides in recent times.
